Chapter 1: The Body

Marna Blackstone
A tall and thin human woman with striking features approaches you. Her blond hair is cut shoulder-length, and her graceful movements nearly mesmerize you. She’s dressed in an expensive-looking silk blouse and loose fighting cotton slacks; you see no sign of armor. She bears a pair of short swords on her hips. As she gets closer, she looks you over before saying softly, "We need to talk, in private."
Jun 16, 2025 12:26 am
Breg sizes up the armed woman, and replies, Very well, what about?

You have never seen or heard of her.

She shakes her head. "Not here. Follow me." She leads you through the ward to a bar called The Fickle Bog. She nods to the bartender and, without stopping, leads you to a back room. "We’re safe talking business here. After our chat, feel free to have a drink at the bar. The first round is on me." She smiles wryly before continuing. "But let’s get right to business. Much like you, we want the murder of that army officer resolved. We’re aware that that mutilated beast of a half-orc is spreading misinformation, and we want to quell that. He told you a Dragon Claw murdered the officer. Well, that’s technically true - at least, it was true. Be assured, he is no longer a Dragon Claw; in fact, we’d be... very appreciative if you would handle him for us. We do not look highly upon renegades who give our group a bad name. I am here to assure your safe passage through the sewers. You have my word that none of the current Dragon Claws will assault you. And, of course, if you handle this little bit of business, we would be indebted to you."

Lunori’s ears perked slightly, and a soft, contented purr escaped him as he dipped his head in a graceful nod.

"Ah, my dear lady, your hospitality is as welcome as a sunbeam on a cold stone floor. It shall be my pleasure to lend my humble talents to your cause. Know this—I seek only the truth, and I’d sooner choke on a hairball than falsely accuse an innocent, no matter how unsavory their dealings may be elsewhere."

He flicked his tail with a touch of theatrical flair, his whiskers twitching in amusement.

"I must admit, I find myself most intrigued. It is not every day one has the chance to parley with a company that walks the shadowed edge of the law. And to discover that even in such oft-misunderstood circles, one may find refinement, charm—and dare I say, beauty—is a rare and welcome blessing."

With a paw-hand over his heart, he gave a slight bow, his eyes gleaming with mischief and sincerity alike.

"Lead on, my lady. I shall follow—aye, even to the gates of Hell itself, should your path wind so far."

The woman smiles at Lunori. "Your wit and charm are not lost on me, but business calls. Access to the sewers is technically trespassing under city law, but that doesn't stop people from coming or going as they please. I will take you to an entrance not far from where the renegades are camped."
Jun 16, 2025 11:59 pm
Without much active thought, the stalker started studying the woman, her stance, speech, other mannerisms which might give him clues to her purpose. "You would like these 'renegades' eliminated, but we have only your word they are they ones who killed the military officer. Do you know why they targeted this man? and I am curious as to why they are former members, or was this action the reason for the separation?"

Aldezar paused for a moment, "I just like to know a bit more before I start killing people."

"As I said, we do not look highly upon renegades who give our group a bad name. This action is the reason for their separation, yes. As to why they targeted him, I have no idea. I do know that it was not under our authorization. Perhaps if you question them, they may share their reasoning."

Our green-cloaked ranger has a drink at the bar, with his friends, and then follows the armed woman to the sewer entrance. Breg keeps a singular short blade drawn, as he eventually stoops low to check for recent humanoid tracks.

Aldezar nodded as he listened to the woman. "We will have to see what we find then, assuming we are ready to go hunting through the sewer."

He watched Breg looking for tracks, recognizing the activity as one he would normally be doing as well.
Jun 27, 2025 10:17 pm
Lunori smiled, the tips of his fangs just barely showing beneath the curl of his whiskers. His tail swayed lazily behind him for balance as he padded after the group, graceful and silent.

"The scent of damp despair and treachery... delightful," he purred to no one in particular. "This will make a splendid chapter."
Jul 1, 2025 1:30 pm

The stench is near-overwhelming. Filthy water, about two feet deep in most places, stands in the center of the sewer; if it flows at all, its movement is imperceptible. Narrow walkways, two feet wide each, on either side of the sludge, thankfully allow you to avoid the filth. Even here, however, grime and more disgusting matter make the path a foul place to walk. Marna directed you to proceed to the first intersection, then turn north, and it's a straight shot to the lair.
Jul 2, 2025 12:31 am
The stalker waited a moment for his eyes to adjust to the darkness. He stepped tight against the right wall, staying low, his sword drawn he slipped ahead silently working his way slowly toward the northern intersection.

Lunori’s tail flicked once in indignation before curling tight along his spine, high above the foul waters. Each step was a miniature drama—high and delicate, as if the very stone might offend him. His ears twitched at the echoes, nose crinkling as the stench rolled over him like a sour fog.

"By the golden moon, what rot! I thought the sewers might hold some mystery—but no, only misery. These clothes may not survive the dawn."

He looked at the others with a raised brow.

"Must we sneak like rats? We came to speak, not sneak. Better they see us than think we’re here to stab them in the dark. Few mistrust a bard—until the singing starts."
Jul 2, 2025 8:19 pm
Aldezar paused, "I like to see things before they see me. There may be much more down here than the gang. I also believe that the lady precisely does want us to stab them, repeatedly most likely."
Jul 6, 2025 3:08 pm

The group moves to the first intersection and turns north, as directed. As you navigate the turn, a flutter of activity over your head draws your attention upward. At first, you think the flitting creatures are bats; upon closer inspection, though, you realize that the three creatures closer resemble a cross between a bird and a mosquito. The first two choose Breg and Aldezar as their targets, each landing on one of the warriors. As they light, their barbed legs latch on, and they insert their needle-sharp proboscis into soft, yielding flesh. Aldezar and Breg each suffer 1 point of Constitution damage!

Feeling the burning sting drawing out his life blood... He hated being right. This was exactly why he liked seeing the enemy first.

Aldezar stabbed his sword at the creature leaching him...

But the angle was all wrong and he was unable to strike at the creature.

Lunori's blade flashes, and the "bird" is removed from Aldezar's arm, falling into the river of sewage that passes through the tunnel. The passages are very slippery, but Lunori keeps his footing. Aldezar, denied a target, swings at the remaining "bird" but misses. Breg lashes at the one on his arm and slices it in half, both pieces falling into the sewage. The remaining creature hungrily dives for Lunori, but the bard is faster and sidesteps the attack.
