Shayna backs up as gasoline gets flung about. "Easy, take your time Owen. It's not like that jerry can owes you money. Is it?"
Mar 26, 2025 2:14 am
"Yeah, and precious as it is, we don't want to waste a single drop. But I wouldn't take your time either. We're vulnerable here. Those cars could harbor walkers," Richard says, throwing a castigating look at Shayna.

Owen sucks hard on the hose to get the gas flowing! Too quick and too forcefully, and the young man suddenly had a nasty taste in his mouth. He coughs and hacks, letting gasoline spill over his shoes and splatter along the ground. Shayna just barely manages to step out of the way before it hits her!
Rubbing his tongue clean, Owen gets the stuff flowing into the tank. You wait several moments to ensure you’ve gotten every last drop. A man more clued into cars would know to take this piece and that; stuff that might be useful on the road or a tight spot.
That wasn’t Owen. Still, a half can of gas isn’t bad work for a few moments.
You bid the pizza car goodbye, though you’d see it soon enough on your way back into Athens. Caroline had watched with some amusement as the theatrics had played out. Richard’s warning of Walkers had her deciding to take the rest of the trip in the back of the police cruiser, if Billie Faye didn’t seem to take offense.
Finally, you meet the sign that reads:
Welcome To
Bethlehem
It had probably once been a very nice sign, but as with all things, the apocalypse hadn’t been kind to it. Painted faded or peeled away. A quick glance at the thing would have you thinking it read ‘Welcome To Bed..le…m’.
Bedlam… Hopefully not.
Beyond the sign, the first thing you see belonging to Bethlehem is a huge industrial park. Rows and rows of empty car spaces stretch out in the space just off to your right. Beyond that, you see what had once been busy and bustling stores.
The once-inviting sign at the turn into the industrial park lists the businesses that had once drawn thousands of people here each week:
• Pet Smart
• Michaels
• fiVE Below
• HomeGoods
• belk
• TJ Maxx

"Owen, for Chrissakes, are you alright? You're going to absorb that nasty old gas into your skin!" Richard hoped like hell the kid didn't become ill as they drove closer to Bethlehem. He kept an eye on him, not that they could do much if he ended up poisoning himself.
Chuckling at the sign welcoming them to the city he says, "Let's hope not!" Looking at the abandoned storefronts for signs of activity, images from the past flood his mind.
"My wife loved going to Michael's. She was always making some craft thing."His face tightens with pain, the details of his wife's face already blurring, soon to fade entirely.

Billie had led the way into the nearly empty parking lot with her motorbike, and she parks and waits for the car to come to a stop beside her. The sun-baked asphalt is split, the weeds are plentiful… and in that way the place reminds the woman of her youth. It reminds her of all the out-of-business stores and mini-malls in the decaying cities of the Midwest. Of all the American Dreams that died on the vine, or never even got off the fucking ground before they got shivved.
Sitting atop her lightly rumbling bike, she asks of the others when they pull up, "We got time for some shoppin’? I could use me some new panties, and I bet Caroline there could find a stuffy or some shit."

"TJ Maxx, yes, I'm sure we could all use some formal wear, in case we get invited to a cotillion." She's bitter again, or still, but secretly thinks a new shirt would do her good.

Caroline
As for TJ Maxx, you stand outside a stock-still store, in an equally stock-still parking lot! Someone had thought to pry the letters of the store front off since the end times, or maybe the place had fallen into disrepair before the end came knocking. Wouldn’t be the first store to not keep up with wear and tear…

"Better take a quick look at those doors, and through the shop windows..." he says approaching cautiously to check for signs of egress by previous visitors, undead or alive...
He shields his eyes from the light and peeks in through the glass.

Richard's eyebrows arch hopefully at Billy-Fayes's comment, followed by a sneer directed at Shayna. Then he almost growls at Caroline when she whines about her hungry cat but opts for a frowning look instead,
She's only a kid! his conscience reminds.
"Better watch out, Owen," Richard warns when the boy peers into the store. "Who knows how many and of what lurks inside."

There was every chance in the world that something would lunge at Owen from the other side of the grimy, now-brown glass of TJ Maxx. After all, there had surely been scores of shoppers caught up in the chaos when the end came.
Owen peers through one pane, and sees nothing. Wiping away the brown dust and grime, he peers through another sheet of glass and sees nothing moving within. Another and another, and the young man can finally claim with some confidence that the store is abandoned; of the living and the dead.
There was nothing to do now but shop, and maybe check that this wasn’t the very place that Loucilla had sent you to find. The location hadn’t been specific, and the information was weeks old by the time you’d left!!

Owen steps back to the group, "Cannot see any sign of occupation... All clear is a big word to use, but for now... it looks like we could risk going in," he informs the others.

"Let's not get impressed by the fancy hats or colorful underwear. We sweep it carefully then we stock up. That clear?" She looks hard at Richard who's eyes often get locked into the wrong thing.

"What?" Richard frowns at Shayna as if to say what are you looking at?
"I'm aware of the priorities. It's okay for a guy to have fun once in a while. You should try it. You might like it."

Billie-Faye Cooper, the wrong thing, nods and quietly tells Caroline to come in last and keep her eyes peeled.
"Should be a new shirt in here somewhere, I fuckin' hope," the woman says as she goes in first, lever-action rifle at the ready...

"Wow!" Richard is bug-eyed at seeing rows upon rows of stocked shelves. "What I would have given for a clean pair of clothes, and here it all is for the taking!"
Good thing they have a vehicle to stash whatever supplies they might need.
"Canned goods, can opener, medical supplies, camping stuff, vitamins ... we should spread out and get what is most important. The rest is icing on the cake."
