Chapter 2: It's a Jungle Out There
Be sure to read and follow the guidelines for our forums.
Joining the others for the beginning of their journey, the pyromancer couldn't help but glance at Novac. It didn't escape her that his answer to her question yesterday didn't really explain why he wanted to return to their world. If it weren't for her wife, she knew she'd be a lot more tempted to consider staying. What drives a man to run back to a cell?
"Thanks again for all the help, Nketiah. The supplies and information mean so much to us. I hope I can repay you all one day. This journey looks... daunting. I don't know about the others, but I have basically no survival skills. Any tips? Also, do any of you know how to build a raft?"
She looks to the rest of the group, hoping they might have some knowledge to make up for her own ignorance.
He turned to AJ when he heard her mentioning the raft. "At home, I would have checked it on Google or YouTube," he laughed. "But here, I would say we just have to wing it when we get there. But I think we should get going to get at least a little bit of daylight."
To Nketiah, he said, "Thank you for everything."
He turned to see if everyone was ready.
Going over the gear which had been given them, discussing some additional items. Dalton mused as he looked over a few things. "As a kid, I was a boy scout - did some hiking - hated it." he laughed. "Hundred miles is definitely not going to be a picnic."
Picking up a broad bladed knife and a compass, "I've got a few of these things in a box in my basement, fired a crossbow a few times." he picked up a light crossbow, "Not carbon fiber - but I have a feeling I could hit a few things with it."
Dalton brushed his hand over a steel shield - a grin spread over his face as he picked it up and strapped it on. "Well - if I'm going to be jumping into the thick of things - might be able to make use of this."
He reached up to scratch his head, and froze.
"Where’s my hair … does that feel scaly?"
Al got up, rubbed his eyes and then looked at his hands.
"Hmmm, for a sec I could’ve sworn they looked … reptilian".
Not long after, Al stood before the exit of his abode, fully geared up. He took a second to examine his equipment. He was now dressed in simple green layered robes with a white sash belt. However, underneath this robe was a wooden breastplate over a simple undershirt. For his weapons, he felt drawn to a simple wooden club and shield.
"Real elegant, Al."
With a deep sigh, Al hurried to join the rest of his companions.
"I’ve been backpacking AJ, that’s pretty much it. As for the raft, I mean with some logs and rope we at least have a start."
Slowly he picked up the tee shirt he had been wearing. He'd had it for years - that and a dozen gray shirts. They always joked that he had the color scheme of Batman - black and really dark gray.
Dalton held the shirt looking at the Avengers - Captain America shield in hand in the center. The words across the top "Trust Me, I'm a Super Hero".
Dalton nodded slowly, packing the shirt into his bag. "Maybe..."
Then he chuckled, a movie line coming to mind "Get that man a shield..."
AJ threw the backpack over her shoulders after filling her pockets with other items. The leather armor was nice, but there was some fear it would just make her get hotter. A big knife in case of emergencies, although she supposed she should probably just call it a dagger. This was as ready as it gets.
"We look like a group of adventurers, alright. Didn't think I'd be living through Baldur's Gate 4, but here we are."
He holds up his compass and gets an orientation on which direction they needed to keep going to find the river.
"Even with our new skills and powers, this is going to be hell."
He closed his eyes and listened to the low chatter of the plants, which he was still getting used to.
The next day, you continue south. A few hours have passed when both Al and Novac spot danger lurking. A giant snake the size of a human dangles from a low branch ahead of you, its green scales camouflaging it with the foliage. It opens its mouth, revealing fangs the length of daggers, as it prepares to attack!

"That thing was way too fucking fast for how big it was. Al, are you going to be okay?"
"Did you say poisonous?" he pulled out the healer kit he had just picked up, rifling through things which he was surprised he actually recognized what a lot of them were, although he had no idea why. "You got any fancy magic for poison."
He held a small vial with some herbs which for some reason he knew might help with poison. "Some of this might help, but I'm kind of going on instinct here..."
He started with water, just washing the wound and poison off.
Unless someone has fancy magic - Dalton is going to try a medicine check for Treat Poison.
Unless Al has a higher Medicine - Novac and Dalton both have +4 I think. I assume multiple Treat Poison can not stack, although I saw Aid as an option also.

"You feeling better Al?" normally he someone a shade of green would be a bad thing, but Al had looked a bit pale while poisoned and was looking a little more spinach now.
As Dalton packed up his healer kit, "I can't believe my dad did this every day..." he glanced up at the others who had no idea what he was talking about. "Oh - my dad was a paramedic. 35 years I think. Damn he had some stories, but the stories do not do it justice when you got someone injured and you are just trying to figure something out. Obviously he did not have magical super powers to help."
Dalton just shook his head in wonder, perhaps a new appreciation for what his father had done at work everyday. Standing up slowly. "Take your time, we'll get moving when you are ready, although might want to move away from this pile of snake."
He looked around the jungle, "Good job spotting that thing, I completely missed it. We definitely need to stay alert."
Seeing Al looking physically better eased AJ's anxieties, but the mention of stepping away from the snake had her stop to stare at it.
"This might sound kinda stupid, but like, does anyone know how to skin a snake or extract its venom? Its super trope-y for this kind of situation. Could probably be useful."
Al grimaced as he examined his wound.
Might as well…
Maybe if we grab a fang, we’ll be able to use its poison. Trust me, just don’t get it on yourself.

Crouching down next to the beaten and broken creature, she hesitates before poking it with the point of her blade. AJ clears her throat and takes a deep breath before prying open its maw and attempting to carve out one of its fangs.

"I learned to gut a deer when I was a kid, but nothing more than that. Where I grew up, first two days of deer season were off school because every male above the age of 13 was in the woods with a rifle. All I remember was it being damn cold and freezing my ass off. Never went out again."
He paused to think for a second, "no unexpected knowledge about that springing magically into my head, so the magical kung fu fighting package apparently does not come with animal skinning."
Dalton watched Al form some magic mud and put it on his leg, "It is strange to just remember how to do things which you should not know how to do."
As the were pausing for a few minutes, Dalton felt the desire to recollect himself, something pulling at him to gather his ki or something. He walked a few feet away from where the snake was being brutalized, sat cross legged on the ground and meditated, pulling the energy from around him to rebalance that which he had used against the snake.
Feeling more energized, he would have to add that to the list of strange magical stuff he some how knew how to do now.
Regain focus spell. Let me now if that is right - seemed appropriate.
Hearing Dalton's description, he mused, "Sounds like a picture-perfect suburban dream—hunting trips with the guys." Not that Novac would have traded places. Different strokes, he supposed.
"Other than the magic and maybe some basic combat skills, I'm not sure what hidden knowledge I've come pre-programmed with. It feels like I won't really know until the situation sparks it. I don't think any of the skills I brought with me will be much good in the world we've found ourselves in. No video games. Don't think I'll be dissecting literature or writing essays any time soon either. But as for the poison, I dunno. Probably try to use it on something or someone trying to kill me. I'm getting the vibe that there might be a lot of that."
Her musing sounded nonchalant, but in truth it it was unnerving. What if I just die here?
"Anyway, it seems like we're all good. We should keep going."
Already searching and alert for danger, Novac spots a trap! A concealed trip wire is connected to two scythe blades hidden in the detritus in front of the entrance to the sheltered area.

After a long, weary trek, as they approached a potential shelter, Novac noticed a trap. He raised a hand, signaling the others to halt. "Listen, there's a tripwire here. Someone, or something, clearly doesn't want us around. And frankly, I'm not keen on lingering. I'll attempt to disable it. I suggest you all keep your distance, just in case this goes sideways." "I mean, what's the harm in letting him sneak around and poke his head in? Apparently he was good at it before getting tossed here with us. Now he's even better. I think it's good to be informed about what's around us. If it looks dangerous, we can just go around. There is an inherent risk to it, sure, but there could be something that could help us. Never know in a fantasy world."
He turns to address Novac.
"Just be careful going in there. Trust in your new abilities."
Al’s eyes dart to the rest of the group.
"It’s definitely strange, but we should rely on our skills until we find a way out of here. Basically, fake it until we make it."

One of them spots Novac looking at them, letting out a warning hiss to alert his companions. He raises his axe shakily while the others whimper and cower. "We do not want trouble," the creature says in a high-pitched growl. "Please, leave us in peace."

AJ tumbles forward into the clearing. Her instincts to help in a crisis situation immediately overwhelm any other thought. However, the sight of the strange reptilian creatures have her stop in a moment of hesitation. It wasn't fear, but simply a pause of confirmation regarding what she was seeing. The strangest things they had seen so far still carried characteristics of the world they used to know. Ekujae, with their pointy ears and dark eyes, could easily be emulated by cosplay. These creatures looked completely alien. Before long, she spoke up.
"Don't worry, I have magic that can help. ...Heal!"
In the time it took her to conjure her magic, the flame oracle recalled images of white mages and healers from the games she used to play. There was no need to shout out the names of magical abilities, but something about it felt right in this scenario. As the warmth of her power of engulfed her, it culminated in a large radiation of curative magic. The glow of a hearth filled the clearing. Purifying wisps of cinder flitted through the air, placing themselves everyone there.

The creatures sigh with relief as Al's magic heals some of their injuries. The leader answers Novac's questions.
"The monster was some sort of horrid plant, I think. It looked like a big tuber that had been twisted into a malformed human shape. It had long thorny vines and jagged teeth! I don't think it followed us."
When asked about the trap, he points to the tripwire that Novac sliced through. "No, it didn't work," he says drily.
He looked at the family huddled in the tree. It was impossible not to feel sympathy for them, despite how different they were from him. A man desperately trying to protect his family. Dalton couldn't help but think what he would do for his kids back home in this situation. Anything was the simple answer.
"We have some extra provisions if you are hungry." Dalton pulled out several days worth of provisions and offered them over. Maybe he would regret that in few weeks if they ran out, but looking at the huddling family, he doubted it.
"I'll keep watch while we figure out what to do next. You can rest for a minute."
Dalton turned and continued to watch for any movement. Giant man shaped killer weeds... he hated yard work.
Addressing the reptilians, Al nods respectfully.
"We are also travelling through the jungle … travelling together would be safer for all of us."
Description: In your mind's eye, you magically reorient yourself. You immediately know which direction is north (if it exists at your current location), and you can choose a location you were at within the last 24 hours and learn what direction it lies.
AJ struggled to imagine what the monster that the reptilians mentioned looked like. A part of her was also starting to wonder just how strange this world was. A lot of things so far could easily be attributed to a relatively standard fantasy world. Elves, whatever Al was, and magic. But a potato monster? It was hard to respect the danger it probably posed. She looked to the others.
"I mean- I have fire magic. And it's a plant. Video game logic says it's probably weak to fire. Maybe we could just burn it out?"
Rolls
Arcana/Occultism (Int) - (1d20+5)

"Makes sense... well none of this makes sense, but you get it. Fire kills most things and should work against a plant. We could scout out their home and see what this thing looks like. Maybe Al will be able to get a feeling from it since he has some connection with plants now. Maybe the potato can just go somewhere else."
That was most likely the strangest things he had ever said in his life. Sounded like something he would say playing with his kids and their stuffed animals 'grawr the potato squishy strikes... the little green squishy run screaming... '
Still standing amidst the small lizardfolk, AJ stared at Novac with a furrowed brow. His behavior seemed somewhat contradictory and befuddling. Obviously, we all want to go home, but what kind of guy are you? How are we going to leave this place on the way back?
What can you tell me, gentle plants?
My name is Al. Tell me, do you know this jungle well? Would you feel comfortable navigating through this land?
What did he have to lose, Novac thought to himself... a couple of years in a nice, cozy prison cell if his disappearance had not been discovered..."
"I am Gorsok," the lead humanoid replies to Al. "We can navigate the jungle well enough, though we would have to be careful. There are many beasts much bigger and stronger than us!"
"Honestly, I don't know what to think about this place and getting back home. I was getting all tied up in knots - is it real, am I dreaming, is time the same here as it was there? Too much - makes my head swim."
"What I know is we are going to be here quite a while, so when I get back, I'll have a hell of a story to tell. I don't think I want to have to say I met this nice family of lizard folks who needed help - and abandoned them to the jungle when we could have tried to save their home."
Dalton shrugged. "I say we check it out, see what we can do."
"I don't know who we are, but I know who I am. Coming to this world has given me things. The ability to express what I feel in my soul in ways that I could only dream of back home. I've always wanted to change the world. Or at least leave it a little bit better. I can do that here. It's not that I'm not scared of dying. But this fire gives me the courage and strength to carry on. It always has. And here I feel more connected to it than ever before."
"This world is obviously full of danger, especially if what Nketiah said is true. An unprecedented time of monsters and strife. But I'm reminded of one of my favorite poems.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Grave men, near death, see with blinding sight.
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light."
Glancing at Dalton, she nodded in agreement.
"I believe that we all have valid points. I agree that our main priority should be to get home, alive. But as I mentioned, I have a suspicion we weren’t brought here by accident. Whatever that means, we have to be vigilant. Maybe we have a part to play in the events of this world…"
"In any case, I’m thinking that if we can help these creatures, then they can help us get to where we need to be. I wouldn’t mind making allies along our journey, especially ones good at navigating."
It doesn't take long for you to reach the kobolds' lair. It is a small cave opening in the side of a rocky escarpment. All seems quiet from the outside.
A little too quiet, perhaps...
AJ knew that word. What's more, it stirred something within her.
"We'll get your home back."
The words that came out of her mouth weren't English. It was the language of dragons. It would have been surprising if it weren't for all the other crazy things that had happened so far. She smirked before leaving with the others.
Looking at the opening of the cave briefly, the flame-wielder looked back to Novac and whispered.
"So, sneak in again? Or should we head in together this time? Or maybe we could try to lure it out?"

Something moves in the shadows. Novac glimpses the form of a filthy creature that resembles a small, wide-mouthed fat child made from leaves, vines, tree bark, dirt, and pallid tubers. Unfortunately, Novac is not quite as stealthy as he had hoped. His foot accidentally kicks a fallen bowl, which rattles softly, alerting the creature to his presence. It turns towards the rogue, mouth opening wide to reveal jagged teeth as it starts to shriek!

"We can use this! Try rubbing it over your wounds"
You purify some dirt or mud into a pliable, claylike plaster that can aid in clotting and healing. This restorative substance can be used in lieu of healer's tools for Medicine checks to Administer First Aid or Treat Wounds. If the plaster isn't used within the spell's duration, or if you Cast the Spell again before using the plaster, it reverts to being normal non-magical earth (Duration is 10 minutes).
"We won?" he said weakly. Raising a shaking hand in a thumbs up sign. "Good job team."
Dalton heard Novac, but he just lay there for a long moment. "I thought maybe I would wake up back home."
He felt Novac put some of the healing mud on his wounds, finally he pulled himself over to sit with Novac, watching the fire burn. He had to remind himself that pile of leaves had just recently been trying to eat him.
"Damn potato."
Dalton pulled out his waterskin and took a drink, offered it to Novac. "In my past life, I never drank alcohol, not even once. We get attacked by too many more vegetables I might have to start."
Dalton accepted some more mud from Al and spread it on his wounds. It went against everything he had been taught in first aid, but seemed right here for some reason.
"This is their home." he looked at Novac "and it seemed like something we should do - help that family. If they came with us, how many of those kids would get eaten by the next snake or mutant rose bush. Now - they can come home."

"Yeah, what Dalton said. Traveling would have been dangerous for them too. Finding a safe place in this jungle probably isn't easy either. I know I don't have a lot of space to talk as someone who didn't get mauled by that thing, but we did good, as batshit scary as it was. These powers and skills we have... are they really random? I feel like we're meant to have them. Use them. I don't know. Maybe it's all just cosmic randomness, but I feel like they have a purpose. And using them to make some kind of difference here today makes me feel like we did the right thing. I'm sure I'd be more conflicted if it was me bleeding everywhere, but it is what it is."
Seeing Dalton's thumbs up, AJ stepped forward and grabbed his wrist, bumping her fist into his with a grin. Notably, her skin is still almost scalding to the touch.
"Fuck yeah, dude. You're a badass. I was also a bartender back on Earth. If we can find some good stuff, hopefully I can make you a good cocktail if you want. I would fucking love a drink right now."

That was too close. I’m glad you’re all ok though. I’m glad this magic mud helped, although I don’t even know how or why it does work… There’s just so much we don’t know. After this, we definitely have to travel quietly.
Al grimaced as he saw the last of his companion’s wounds fade away.
Let’s hope that the worst is behind us.
"Checking where that thing came from and if there are more, probably good idea... in a few minutes."
Dalton also made no move to stand up right away. After about 5 more minutes he reluctantly climbed to his feet.
"Al, this mud really works, but I would love a shower at this point. I think they said that thing came from below, so might be a hole in the back of the cave somewhere."
AJ sits down with the others, leaning her back against a cave wall. After a minute, her eyes close as she focuses on the well of flame within her. The vision of fire is clear within her mind's eye. Her soul continues to burn, filling her with warmth and power. Grinning, she opens her eyes and stands up to join the party 10 minutes later.
"Let us ensure that the likes of this abomination will never return."
The edges of her shadow shifted like a pyre on the wall behind her. Reconnecting with that well made her feel powerful, and she always had a flare for the dramatic.
Also refocusing - thanks for the reminder AJ - so Dalton may stay down a bit longer as needed.
When you report back to the kobolds about your success, they are overjoyed. The kobolds grin as they quickly set about tidying up their home. "We cannot thank you enough, friends," Gorsok says. "We found a few magical trinkets a while back. Please, take them as a sign of our appreciation."
The kobolds offer you a potion of emergency escape, a potency crystal, and a shielding salve.
AJ smiles and releases a heavy exhale while observing the fruits of their accomplishment. Looking to Nova, she simply nods, not wanting to waste any time.
Yea, let's get going. The sooner we get out of this jungle, the better. At the very least, I'll keep an eye out for magic. Or what I think is magic... I can sort of see an aura around that crystal.
Dalton will do Defend - make sure that shield is ready :)
Unfortunately, when you wake up, everybody but Al has become rather ill. You feel feverish and nauseous, with severe abdominal pain. Novac seems to have gotten the worst of it.
Everybody who has contracted the disease can attempt another DC 16 Fortitude save the next time you rest to try to recover. A success reduces the disease's stage by 1, a critical success reduces it by 2.. If it gets to 0, you are cured. You could try to use Medicine to Treat Disease, but that takes 8 hours so you'd make no progress in traveling today. You can also use a lesser antiplague to gain a +2 item bonus on saves against disease for 24 hours, which includes the save against the disease's progression.

No rush, AJ. We can take our time today and see how we’re all faring. I can try and scout ahead in a bit to get an idea of our surroundings.

Her brain was too fogged by fatigue and fever to really feel any emotion strongly, but she knew logically she should be scared. But all she wanted was to just sleep.
Not exactly what you want to hear from your patient. I know I’m not sick, but I think you all should pull through.

How’s everyone feeling today? Do we need another day to fully recover?
He took a slow breath, "I think I have shaken it, but I think I heard AJ restless last night. We may need to try to stay another day. I agree though, it would be better to not be in the middle of the jungle, but I fear we have few options at the moment."
Dalton looked around, "Al, you don't happen to have a magic mud for this? or perhaps know something in nature that may help us to beat this?"
"The items I mixed up for myself yesterday from the first aid kit seemed to help, so I'll try that for anyone who remains sick today."
Was going to ask this OOC, but decided to ask IC instead :) if there is any nature checks which might be used to add bonus to the roll.
"I feel like fucking dogshit. Worse than yesterday. Stomach is eating me alive from the inside. Couldn't sleep worth a shit. If you want me to move, you're gonna have to push me."
Reaching into her pack, she retrieved the second vial of lesser antiplague. The fluid was choked down as quickly as she could manage after popping the stopper.
Still in a daze, it took a moment for the realization to coldly set in that she implied her prior manhood. AJ stared at the floor of her tent uncomfortably, feeling a tightness in her throat.
And don’t worry, I’d also like to find out why I’m green and have tusks. Being the nature guy, it’s a bit on the nose, eh?
You spend at least 8 hours caring for a diseased creature. Attempt a Medicine check against the disease's DC. After you attempt to Treat a Disease for a creature, you can't try again until after that creature's next save against the disease.
Critical Success You grant the creature a +4 circumstance bonus to its next saving throw against the disease.
Success You grant the creature a +2 circumstance bonus to its next saving throw against the disease.

"Good that not everything here is as dangerous as the demonic plant thing."

My brother-in-law would thrive here - hunter, fisher - skins his own animals. Real outdoorsman..." Dalton shakes his head, realizing he is just rambling, he grows quiet and lets people rest as he keep watch.
You’re telling me, I only watched nature documentaries which are amazing to watch… but less relevant when the animals are trying to rip you apart. At least I could remember how to put together a basic shelter.

Novac's great success with the raft the following day was met with applause.

As they were getting ready to leave, "My only advice from some boy scout canoe trips is make sure all of your gear is securely bundled and plan to get flipped. Might not be as common with a raft as a canoe, but making sure packs are secured and cannot just fall off and disappear into the river is a good idea."
