Chapter 2: It's a Jungle Out There

Mar 3, 2025 1:09 pm
You awaken the next morning. Any hopes that the previous day's events had just been some bizarre dream are soon squashed as you feel the heat and humidity of the jungle and look down to see you are still in your altered bodies. After partaking of breakfast, Nketiah has some of the other Ekujae present you with several items they have collected to aid you in your journey through the Mwangi Jungle.
OOC:
Each of you is gifted your starting gear. You also gain the following: Two pup tents, five full waterskins, 4 weeks’ worth of rations, mosquito netting, healer’s tools, 6 vials of lesser antiplague, 3 minor elixirs of life.
Nketiah gives you a map of this region of the jungle, showing your route from Akrivel to Nantambu. It's close to a 100-mile journey, all told. The first 40 miles or so are south through the jungle, until you reach a tributary of the Vanji River. The map then directs you to follow the tributary west to the main river itself, which will lead you south the rest of the way until you reach Nantambu. Nketiah suggests constructing a raft once you reach the river to ease your journey. The storyteller is willing to answer any questions you might have before you depart.
Mar 3, 2025 6:15 pm
If it weren't for the relatively oppressive climate of the jungle, it would have been easy to get lost in the loneliness of waking up by herself. Humid and hot were not the words AJ would use to describe the places she had been in her life. Interestingly, that was much harder to adjust to than the changes of her physical form. Pushing away the loneliness and the overbearing weather, she stepped away from the furniture in her room and snapped her fingers. Watching the embers fly forth from her hand brought that adrenaline back. Was it pyromania? The thrill of power? Both? Either way, it was extremely cathartic.

Joining the others for the beginning of their journey, the pyromancer couldn't help but glance at Novac. It didn't escape her that his answer to her question yesterday didn't really explain why he wanted to return to their world. If it weren't for her wife, she knew she'd be a lot more tempted to consider staying. What drives a man to run back to a cell?

"Thanks again for all the help, Nketiah. The supplies and information mean so much to us. I hope I can repay you all one day. This journey looks... daunting. I don't know about the others, but I have basically no survival skills. Any tips? Also, do any of you know how to build a raft?"

She looks to the rest of the group, hoping they might have some knowledge to make up for her own ignorance.
Mar 3, 2025 10:19 pm
Novac looked at the daggers and the other weapons he was given with apprehension. He knew exactly how to use them now. This really scared him. He was surprised that he found lock picks in his pack, not that they would be useful for now.

He turned to AJ when he heard her mentioning the raft. "At home, I would have checked it on Google or YouTube," he laughed. "But here, I would say we just have to wing it when we get there. But I think we should get going to get at least a little bit of daylight."

To Nketiah, he said, "Thank you for everything."

He turned to see if everyone was ready.
Mar 4, 2025 12:07 am
Dalton rose early - not having slept particularly well. He felt a little out of focus, a part of him seemed out of balance. For a number of years he had practiced yoga - well on and off anyway. Trying to clear his mind, Dalton did a few stretches that he would normally do - but as he started moving - he flowed into potions which felt natural - picking up speed and balance into things he would have never dreamed. Strikes, kicks, forms which felt practiced and natural. Finally ending with that one armed hand stand he had joked with Novac about. Dalton had never felt this strong or healthy in his entire life - he wondered if he would miss it should he make it home - returning to the old, out of shape body he had left behind.

Going over the gear which had been given them, discussing some additional items. Dalton mused as he looked over a few things. "As a kid, I was a boy scout - did some hiking - hated it." he laughed. "Hundred miles is definitely not going to be a picnic."

Picking up a broad bladed knife and a compass, "I've got a few of these things in a box in my basement, fired a crossbow a few times." he picked up a light crossbow, "Not carbon fiber - but I have a feeling I could hit a few things with it."

Dalton brushed his hand over a steel shield - a grin spread over his face as he picked it up and strapped it on. "Well - if I'm going to be jumping into the thick of things - might be able to make use of this."
Mar 4, 2025 5:05 am
Al was most likely the last to get up that morning. As he slept laying in the one spot of sunlight available to him, he stirred as he heard the others gathering.

He reached up to scratch his head, and froze.

"Where’s my hair … does that feel scaly?"

Al got up, rubbed his eyes and then looked at his hands.

"Hmmm, for a sec I could’ve sworn they looked … reptilian".

Not long after, Al stood before the exit of his abode, fully geared up. He took a second to examine his equipment. He was now dressed in simple green layered robes with a white sash belt. However, underneath this robe was a wooden breastplate over a simple undershirt. For his weapons, he felt drawn to a simple wooden club and shield.

"Real elegant, Al."

With a deep sigh, Al hurried to join the rest of his companions.

"I’ve been backpacking AJ, that’s pretty much it. As for the raft, I mean with some logs and rope we at least have a start."
Mar 4, 2025 12:28 pm
With his new pack organized, Dalton returned to his room briefly. He dug through the pockets of his ripped jeans. Car keys and turned off cell phone he put carefully into his pack. He laughed as he picked up the winter coat - "Not going to need this anything soon." He tossed the heavy coat and jeans into a pile on the bed.

Slowly he picked up the tee shirt he had been wearing. He'd had it for years - that and a dozen gray shirts. They always joked that he had the color scheme of Batman - black and really dark gray.

Dalton held the shirt looking at the Avengers - Captain America shield in hand in the center. The words across the top "Trust Me, I'm a Super Hero".

Dalton nodded slowly, packing the shirt into his bag. "Maybe..."

Then he chuckled, a movie line coming to mind "Get that man a shield..."
Mar 4, 2025 7:51 pm
"Well, guess I can't be too shocked that a bunch of dudes from a first-world country are woefully unprepared for a 100-mile hike through a jungle. Gonna have to really rely on the skills and powers the transition gave us. And the gear from these hospitable people. Let's hit the road, gang."

AJ threw the backpack over her shoulders after filling her pockets with other items. The leather armor was nice, but there was some fear it would just make her get hotter. A big knife in case of emergencies, although she supposed she should probably just call it a dagger. This was as ready as it gets.

"We look like a group of adventurers, alright. Didn't think I'd be living through Baldur's Gate 4, but here we are."
Mar 4, 2025 8:26 pm
Dalton laughed, picking up his own pack. "I hope this goes better than Baldur's Gate - I've had that on my PC for months and haven't gotten out of Act 2. At that rate, we'd be in the jungle for a year."

He holds up his compass and gets an orientation on which direction they needed to keep going to find the river.
Mar 4, 2025 11:17 pm
"I was never one for gaming," Novac admitted. "But I heard it's quite popular," he said, while trying not to lose his footing. Navigating the jungle floor was not an easy task. He also tried to scan the area in front of them as they were walking, to avoid any surprises
OOC:
search for exploration activity
Mar 5, 2025 3:32 pm
Al laughed at AJ’s words.

"Even with our new skills and powers, this is going to be hell."

He closed his eyes and listened to the low chatter of the plants, which he was still getting used to.
OOC:
Al will use the Scout exploration activity.
Mar 7, 2025 3:46 pm
You bid farewell to the Ekujae as you set off into the jungle. Like yesterday, the jungle floor is dark, hot, and humid, but with the equipment you have been given, you are able to make better progress and remain slightly more comfortable. The day’s travel is uneventful. As night falls, Al finds a good place to make camp. The tents and mosquito netting provide shelter from the elements and biting insects as you fall asleep to the cacophony of animal noises.

The next day, you continue south. A few hours have passed when both Al and Novac spot danger lurking. A giant snake the size of a human dangles from a low branch ahead of you, its green scales camouflaging it with the foliage. It opens its mouth, revealing fangs the length of daggers, as it prepares to attack!
OOC:
@Kristian,@cellarnovice, Al and Novac may act first! The snake is 20 feet away from your group. You can reach it in melee from the ground.

Novac's dagger sails past the snake, missing it. Al blasts the reptile with electricity, though it avoids some of the blast. He identifies the snake as an anaconda, a constrictor that is not venomous.

The snake hisses as it slithers forward, seeking out Al in retaliation. It lunges, its fangs sinking deep into his thigh. He feels its venom burning through his veins. Maybe it's not an anaconda after all? The snake coils its body tightly as it bares its fangs and prepares to attack again!
OOC:
8 piercing damage to Al. He must attempt a DC 17 Fortitude save against the snake's venom. The poison is an affliction. Full rules for afflictions can be found here.

The presence of the enormous serpent has AJ immediately unsteady with trepidation. As much as she felt the raging flame of power course through her, there was no delusion that she would be invincible to those excessively long fangs. A shimmering wall of pale light emanated from the front of her as her magic seemed to respond instinctually to her unease. However, the sight of Al being bitten gave way for a fierce desire to protect him that was quickly conquering her other feelings. The flame inside of her grew, and the snap of the fingers from her hand at the snake summoned a wave of combustive heat over it.

Dalton had not seen the snake until it was already attacking. As it bit into Al, Dalton moved to attack the serpent. "Hang on!"

Dalton moved to get the snake's attention, trying to put himself between the snake and Al. When he fought the tick, desperation had led him to call on a focus of mystical energy he did not know existed. This time, he reached for it again, feeling the power respond and fuel his attacks against the snake.

AJ scores a hit with her fire spell, scorching the snake. As Dalton moves in to attack, the snake uncoils and lunges at him! He dodges and counterattacks, but he misses as well. So, too, do Al and Novac. The hissing snake lashes out at everybody around it, but it continues the streak, not landing a hit!

This time, Dalton lands two powerful blows on the snake! Bones crunch under his fists, and the beast writhes in pain. Al bring his club down on its skull with a satisfying SMACK, and the snake goes limp.
OOC:
Combat over!
Mar 11, 2025 1:39 pm
AJ wipes some sweat from her brow and shudders amidst the echoes of jittering adrenaline and ecstatic power.

"That thing was way too fucking fast for how big it was. Al, are you going to be okay?"
Mar 11, 2025 10:31 pm
After punching the snake into the ground, Dalton took a breath, then rushed over to Al.

"Did you say poisonous?" he pulled out the healer kit he had just picked up, rifling through things which he was surprised he actually recognized what a lot of them were, although he had no idea why. "You got any fancy magic for poison."

He held a small vial with some herbs which for some reason he knew might help with poison. "Some of this might help, but I'm kind of going on instinct here..."

He started with water, just washing the wound and poison off.
OOC:

Unless someone has fancy magic - Dalton is going to try a medicine check for Treat Poison.

Unless Al has a higher Medicine - Novac and Dalton both have +4 I think. I assume multiple Treat Poison can not stack, although I saw Aid as an option also.
Mar 11, 2025 11:18 pm
Novac, seeing Dalton and AJ rushing to Al's side to help, went to find his daggers. He didn't want to lose the weapons, and it seemed that although he knew how to use them, he still needed to practice his throwing routine. "Well, I guess it pays to keep our eyes open," he said once he retrieved his daggers.
OOC:
@DrifterDwarf Once you treated a person with medicine (success or failure) the person is immune for one hour. There is a feat you can pick up to reduce it to 10 minutes. With that feat you can treat the same person every 10 minutes.
Mar 12, 2025 7:54 am
OOC:
That's only for Treat Wounds. After you attempt to Treat a Poison for a creature, you can't try again until after the next time that creature attempts a save against the poison. I'll make a few rolls here to speed up the recovery process.
Dalton tends to Al's poisoned wound. The venom burns his veins a bit more, but soon enough, Dalton's ministrations allow Al to recover.
OOC:
Al takes another 2 poison damage. He will remain drained 1 until he gets a full night's rest.

As the poison seems to abate in Al's system, Dalton sits back after trying a number of different things from the healers kit. It was kind of a blur, he followed what made sense at the time, but he doubted he could tell you what he had just did. Still, it seemed to have mostly helped.

"You feeling better Al?" normally he someone a shade of green would be a bad thing, but Al had looked a bit pale while poisoned and was looking a little more spinach now.

As Dalton packed up his healer kit, "I can't believe my dad did this every day..." he glanced up at the others who had no idea what he was talking about. "Oh - my dad was a paramedic. 35 years I think. Damn he had some stories, but the stories do not do it justice when you got someone injured and you are just trying to figure something out. Obviously he did not have magical super powers to help."

Dalton just shook his head in wonder, perhaps a new appreciation for what his father had done at work everyday. Standing up slowly. "Take your time, we'll get moving when you are ready, although might want to move away from this pile of snake."

He looked around the jungle, "Good job spotting that thing, I completely missed it. We definitely need to stay alert."
Mar 12, 2025 12:45 pm
"Well, glad our magical super powers came with someone who knew what they were doing and the tools to help. I was kinda panicking, trying to figure out what to do. My magic can close wounds, but it can't take care of anything like that. Didn't learn anything useful from my dad. He was just an absent, deadbeat drunk."

Seeing Al looking physically better eased AJ's anxieties, but the mention of stepping away from the snake had her stop to stare at it.

"This might sound kinda stupid, but like, does anyone know how to skin a snake or extract its venom? Its super trope-y for this kind of situation. Could probably be useful."

Thanks for the help, everyone. I’ll make it, I can say that much.

Al grimaced as he examined his wound.

Might as well…
OOC:
Al will cast Healing Plaster and will attempt to Treat Wounds
Al will follow AJ’s gaze to the dead snake.

Maybe if we grab a fang, we’ll be able to use its poison. Trust me, just don’t get it on yourself.

"Extract poison from a giant snake I didn't even know existed? I wouldn't know where to begin." Novac offered a wry smile, then turned a serious gaze to Al. "Do you think we can still push on, or should we find a place to rest?" He was beginning to doubt their chances. They were being relentlessly worn down by unseen threats. Superpowers or not, they needed to find a way to circumvent these dangers, not confront them directly.
Mar 12, 2025 6:34 pm
AJ glances back and forth between Al and Novac briefly before ultimately shrugging and pulling out her dagger. Do I have any idea how to do this? No. Am I going to make a mess? More than likely. Oh well.

"Take time to think about it while I cut into this thing."

Crouching down next to the beaten and broken creature, she hesitates before poking it with the point of her blade. As it remains still, her hand takes hold of the creatures head and pushes it on to its side. AJ clears her throat and takes a deep breath before prying open its maw and attempting to carve out one of its fangs.
OOC:
Not sure if this will require a roll or if it will be nature or survival. I'll leave it to Brainy!
Mar 12, 2025 6:45 pm
OOC:
Your Nature and Survival bonuses are the same so I’ll roll for one or the other. Critical failure!
The movies make it look so easy to harvest venom from a dead animal, when it’s actually quite difficult. AJ botches the job quite thoroughly. The snake’s body is too ruined now to make another attempt.

Rolls

AJ Nature/Survival DC 18 - (d20+1)

Dalton watched AJ butcher her attempt at butchering the snake.

"I learned to gut a deer when I was a kid, but nothing more than that. Where I grew up, first two days of deer season were off school because every male above the age of 13 was in the woods with a rifle. All I remember was it being damn cold and freezing my ass off. Never went out again."

He paused to think for a second, "no unexpected knowledge about that springing magically into my head, so the magical kung fu fighting package apparently does not come with animal skinning."

Dalton watched Al form some magic mud and put it on his leg, "It is strange to just remember how to do things which you should not know how to do."

As the were pausing for a few minutes, Dalton felt the desire to recollect himself, something pulling at him to gather his ki or something. He walked a few feet away from where the snake was being brutalized, sat cross legged on the ground and meditated, pulling the energy from around him to rebalance that which he had used against the snake.

Feeling more energized, he would have to add that to the list of strange magical stuff he some how knew how to do now.
OOC:

Regain focus spell. Let me now if that is right - seemed appropriate.

Novac chuckled, watching AJ's attempt. "I'm pretty sure that's not quite right," he said, a smirk playing on his lips. "Though, to be fair, my outdoor experience is limited to concrete jungles. What where you planning to do with that poison?"
Hearing Dalton's description, he mused, "Sounds like a picture-perfect suburban dream—hunting trips with the guys." Not that Novac would have traded places. Different strokes, he supposed.
Mar 13, 2025 12:03 pm
Cringing and cleaning off her dagger, AJ quickly puts the weapon away and steps away from the snake. Half of her was optimistic and the other half knew she'd butcher it, but they both cringed at the result.

"Other than the magic and maybe some basic combat skills, I'm not sure what hidden knowledge I've come pre-programmed with. It feels like I won't really know until the situation sparks it. I don't think any of the skills I brought with me will be much good in the world we've found ourselves in. No video games. Don't think I'll be dissecting literature or writing essays any time soon either. But as for the poison, I dunno. Probably try to use it on something or someone trying to kill me. I'm getting the vibe that there might be a lot of that."

Her musing sounded nonchalant, but in truth it it was unnerving. What if I just die here?

"Anyway, it seems like we're all good. We should keep going."

The rest of the day passes without incident. You set up camp again that night, but this time, your equipment doesn't quite manage t okeep all of the insects, rain, and other unpleasant jungle elements from reaching you. You wake up a bit groggy and uncomfortable.
OOC:
Everybody must attempt a DC 17 Fortitude save against disease or catch dysentery. It has an onset period of 1 day, so you won't suffer immediate effects.
You continue your trek through the dark and humid jungle. In the afternoon, you come upon a small clearing. Several huge, rotting trees lie in various states of decomposition here, vibrantly decorated with colorful mushrooms and moss. The deadfall is shaped in a rough "C", making a fifteen-foot-wide sheltered area within. An exceptional number of insects scuttle and scurry across the dead trees and other detritus on the jungle floor below.

Already searching and alert for danger, Novac spots a trap! A concealed trip wire is connected to two scythe blades hidden in the detritus in front of the entrance to the sheltered area.
OOC:
The trap can be disabled with a DC 18 Thievery check.

Ahhhh don't like that. Rolling now! ...Yep, this sucks, haha.
Waking up in this jungle was starting to make this strange dream of a reality feel more like a nightmare. The aches, heat, sweat, and now insufficient tents left AJ wondering if this was actually hell she had found herself in. However, the insects and moisture kept her from wanting to wallow. Well, it's a good thing that the Ekujae gave us stuff to ward off fantasy malaria. She choked down one of the bitter antiplagues she was given before they set off.

Coming across the weird clearing of decay and vibrant life, AJ was unsure if she found it beautiful or repulsive.

Novac awoke, his head throbbing, more drained than he'd ever felt. Not for the first time, he longed for the confines of his prison cell. Spotting AJ gulping down the strange potion they'd been given, he decided to follow suit. "Ah, the taste of medicinal morning," he mumbled.
After a long, weary trek, as they approached a potential shelter, Novac noticed a trap. He raised a hand, signaling the others to halt. "Listen, there's a tripwire here. Someone, or something, clearly doesn't want us around. And frankly, I'm not keen on lingering. I'll attempt to disable it. I suggest you all keep your distance, just in case this goes sideways." With that, he produced his tools and set to work."

Novac easily disables the trap by severing the tripwire. He can hear mutters and hisses coming from inside the sheltered area of the deadfall...

Novac, after disabling the tripwire, went back to where the others were waiting. "I disabled the trap, but I heard hisses and muttering from inside. I don't want to get into another fight. I could try to sneak inside to see what's going on in there." He was surprised to hear himself talk like that. He wasn't sure if it was even him anymore. Sneak inside to check things out? That wasn't like him. If he had heard voices or anything unexpected in the past, he would have run... fast.

Dalton watch the clearing from the edge as Novac worked on the trap. The number of bugs was not making him feel any better. "Considering the size of that tick and other things, a few giant trees worth of bugs does not sound inviting."

As Novac disables the trap, "Do we even care to go looking? This might be someone's house - the trap at the front door is either to gather food or to keep people away. Either way, I'm not sure I want to go stomping into their living room."

AJ watched Novac disarm the trap with fascination, wondering what all she would do with such a skillset. The convicted thief is like a rogue. Hilarious. She hoped he would want to do something good with his talents, but a significant part of her had a hard time trusting him. It's not like she'd never known any criminals before, but they were people who'd been out of prison for a long time. Conquering her wariness of prior felons was one thing, but an active felon was something very different. It's possible he could have lied about what he was in for. If it wasn't for the fact that she was now able to manifest her inner flames into external ones, she would be feeling a lot more vulnerable in this body. Dalton's voice snapped her out of her silent paranoia and inner monologue.

"I mean, what's the harm in letting him sneak around and poke his head in? Apparently he was good at it before getting tossed here with us. Now he's even better. I think it's good to be informed about what's around us. If it looks dangerous, we can just go around. There is an inherent risk to it, sure, but there could be something that could help us. Never know in a fantasy world."

Still sensitive from his wounds, Al grapples with the humid jungle environment. He wipes his brow, drenched with sweat.

He turns to address Novac.
"Just be careful going in there. Trust in your new abilities."

Al’s eyes dart to the rest of the group.

"It’s definitely strange, but we should rely on our skills until we find a way out of here. Basically, fake it until we make it."

Novac quietly moves up to the sheltered area within the deadfall and peeks inside from behind cover. Huddled together within are six small, reptilian humanoid creatures. They have green scales and long snouts with small, beady eyes. Some of the creatures hold crude weapons, but they all seem exhausted and some have visible injuries.

One of them spots Novac looking at them, letting out a warning hiss to alert his companions. He raises his axe shakily while the others whimper and cower. "We do not want trouble," the creature says in a high-pitched growl. "Please, leave us in peace."

The creature lets out a hissing sigh. "Yes. We would be grateful if you could help. Our tribe dwells in a cave not too far from here. But something came up from below. A horrid thing with a hideous shriek! It attacked us, and we were forced to flee to save our lives. We set that trap in case it decided to follow us."
Mar 27, 2025 2:22 pm
"My companions can help heal you. Don't worry, they're good people." Novac exits the cave, waving his group over. "We've found some people here who really need our help. They're hurt and worn out, driven from their home." He heads back inside.
Mar 27, 2025 4:56 pm
"I'll be right there!"

AJ tumbles forward into the clearing. Her instincts to help in a crisis situation immediately overwhelm any other thought. However, the sight of the strange reptilian creatures have her stop in a moment of hesitation. It wasn't fear, but simply a pause of confirmation regarding what she was seeing. The strangest things they had seen so far still carried characteristics of the world they used to know. Ekujae, with their pointy ears and dark eyes, could easily be emulated by cosplay. These creatures looked completely alien. Before long, she spoke up.

"Don't worry, I have magic that can help. ...Heal!"

In the time it took her to conjure her magic, the flame oracle recalled images of white mages and healers from the games she used to play. There was no need to shout out the names of magical abilities, but something about it felt right in this scenario. As the warmth of her power of engulfed her, it culminated in a large radiation of curative magic. The glow of a hearth filled the clearing. Purifying wisps of cinder flitted through the air, placing themselves everyone there.

Dalton followed over to the the area, shield still on his arm, but lowered. Novac had mentioned something drove them from their home. "Did they mention what they are fleeing?" Looking around the clearing for any sign of what might be chasing whoever Novac had found.

He glanced into the shelter, spotted the lizard folk, and stood up pausing to consider. Talking quietly to himself, "Well, I had been waiting for the talking lion." giving another glance - he turned to scan the trees again.

Now that he had notified his friends, Novac turned to what he assumed was the leader. "You mentioned that you were driven out of your home by a horrible thing. Can you describe it? Did it follow you here?" Novac looked around nervously. He was still rattled from the snake attack, and he wasn't sure if they could help against a monster that displaced those reptilian people. "You mentioned a trap? Do you know if it worked?"
Mar 28, 2025 9:45 am
Dalton doesn't spot anything menacing in the trees, thankfully!

The creatures sigh with relief as Al's magic heals some of their injuries. The leader answers Novac's questions.

"The monster was some sort of horrid plant, I think. It looked like a big tuber that had been twisted into a malformed human shape. It had long thorny vines and jagged teeth! I don't think it followed us."

When asked about the trap, he points to the tripwire that Novac sliced through. "No, it didn't work," he says drily.
Mar 28, 2025 11:55 am
Dalton leans in to report, catching the reptile leaders comment. He paused a moment, his brain suddenly thinking he was talking to an iguana or alligator. "I for one am glad the trap didn't work. I do not see anything moving around the clearing. How far away is your home from here?"

He looked at the family huddled in the tree. It was impossible not to feel sympathy for them, despite how different they were from him. A man desperately trying to protect his family. Dalton couldn't help but think what he would do for his kids back home in this situation. Anything was the simple answer.

"We have some extra provisions if you are hungry." Dalton pulled out several days worth of provisions and offered them over. Maybe he would regret that in few weeks if they ran out, but looking at the huddling family, he doubted it.

"I'll keep watch while we figure out what to do next. You can rest for a minute."

Dalton turned and continued to watch for any movement. Giant man shaped killer weeds... he hated yard work.

Scanning the foliage, Al reflects on the description of the creature.

Addressing the reptilians, Al nods respectfully.

"We are also travelling through the jungle … travelling together would be safer for all of us."
OOC:
Al will use the cantrip Know the Way to ensure that the group is still moving in the general direction of the village.

Description: In your mind's eye, you magically reorient yourself. You immediately know which direction is north (if it exists at your current location), and you can choose a location you were at within the last 24 hours and learn what direction it lies.
Mar 28, 2025 6:18 pm
Feeling embarrassed for accidentally wrecking the family's trap, Novac said, "I'm really sorry about that. We're not used to the jungle, and we've been having some trouble ourselves, so I wasn't thinking about any defenses you might have," his voice trailed off. "But like Al said, if you're heading somewhere, we could travel with you. Safety in numbers, you know?"
Mar 30, 2025 3:07 pm
"Tuber? Like- a potato?"

AJ struggled to imagine what the monster that the reptilians mentioned looked like. A part of her was also starting to wonder just how strange this world was. A lot of things so far could easily be attributed to a relatively standard fantasy world. Elves, whatever Al was, and magic. But a potato monster? It was hard to respect the danger it probably posed. She looked to the others.

"I mean- I have fire magic. And it's a plant. Video game logic says it's probably weak to fire. Maybe we could just burn it out?"
OOC:

Dalton could not help but grin, it certainly sounded funny out of context - user your fire magic to defeat the boss potato. If not for the terrified family huddled within the only shelter they could find.

"Makes sense... well none of this makes sense, but you get it. Fire kills most things and should work against a plant. We could scout out their home and see what this thing looks like. Maybe Al will be able to get a feeling from it since he has some connection with plants now. Maybe the potato can just go somewhere else."

That was most likely the strangest things he had ever said in his life. Sounded like something he would say playing with his kids and their stuffed animals 'grawr the potato squishy strikes... the little green squishy run screaming... '
Apr 1, 2025 4:57 am
Novac stared at his companions, incredulous. Barely a couple of days in this bizarre world, they'd already faced down monkeys, strange critters, and a colossal snake. And now, they spoke of hunting a monster? Not for defense, but to seek it out! "Hold on," he interjected, "no offense, but aren't we biting off more than we can chew? We practically stumbled our way here, barely surviving. Shouldn't we stick with our new allies, find a safe haven, and, you know, actually aim to get back home?"
Apr 1, 2025 1:32 pm
The humanoids gratefully accept the offered food. "Our home is only a mile or so away from here. There's nowhere else that we have to go. If you can't drive the monster away, we'll have to find a new place to live," says the leader of the group, his tail lashing behind him.
OOC:
The creature is a plant, so you would need to use Nature to attempt to Recall Knowledge about it.

Didn't know if it was a particularly odd plant or not based on the description, haha. Well, my mod would have been a +1 instead. So that's a 10.
"These little dudes are gonna have to settle down somewhere. They aren't going to join us on our long ass walk to civilization. Are you suggesting we should just leave them here instead? You were the one to suggest poking your nose in here to see what was going on. The decent thing to do would be to either help them find a new place to live or get them back their old one. The ekujae took care of us. We should pay it forward."

Still standing amidst the small lizardfolk, AJ stared at Novac with a furrowed brow. His behavior seemed somewhat contradictory and befuddling. Obviously, we all want to go home, but what kind of guy are you? How are we going to leave this place on the way back?
Apr 1, 2025 4:30 pm
Contemplating the discussion amongst his party members, Al drums out the noise to instead focus on the foliage around them.

What can you tell me, gentle plants?
OOC:
Using the Plant Empathy feat, Al would ask the surrounding plants for basic info about what the creature looked like and the direction it traveled.
Regardless of their answer, Al will then tune back into the conversation, addressing the leader of the reptilian humanoids.

Novac sighs, "It's not that I don't want to help. I do, but who are we? Yes, you guys got strange powers and morphed into being something different. But consider who you are and how well you know your powers. I am not sure if we are made to survive this. And what if one of us dies here, never coming back? What about your families? Did you consider that? Your loved ones would not know what happened to you. Did you run off? Did you become a victim of a serial killer? The impact that would have?" Novac looked at each of them in turn. "Just think about it, and if you still want to charge headfirst into unknown danger, well, I guess I will lead the way."
What did he have to lose, Novac thought to himself... a couple of years in a nice, cozy prison cell if his disappearance had not been discovered..."
Apr 2, 2025 10:29 am
The nearby plants haven't seen the creature, so there's little they can tell Al. But it seems the thing is probably still in the reptilian humanoids' home.

"I am Gorsok," the lead humanoid replies to Al. "We can navigate the jungle well enough, though we would have to be careful. There are many beasts much bigger and stronger than us!"
Apr 2, 2025 12:50 pm
Dalton thought about what Novac had said about his family. He had been thinking about that question.

"Honestly, I don't know what to think about this place and getting back home. I was getting all tied up in knots - is it real, am I dreaming, is time the same here as it was there? Too much - makes my head swim."

"What I know is we are going to be here quite a while, so when I get back, I'll have a hell of a story to tell. I don't think I want to have to say I met this nice family of lizard folks who needed help - and abandoned them to the jungle when we could have tried to save their home."

Dalton shrugged. "I say we check it out, see what we can do."
Apr 2, 2025 2:12 pm
AJ listened carefully to what Novac had to say, and what her heart had to say in response. The fire in her eyes grew.

"I don't know who we are, but I know who I am. Coming to this world has given me things. The ability to express what I feel in my soul in ways that I could only dream of back home. I've always wanted to change the world. Or at least leave it a little bit better. I can do that here. It's not that I'm not scared of dying. But this fire gives me the courage and strength to carry on. It always has. And here I feel more connected to it than ever before."

"This world is obviously full of danger, especially if what Nketiah said is true. An unprecedented time of monsters and strife. But I'm reminded of one of my favorite poems.

Do not go gentle into that good night.
Grave men, near death, see with blinding sight.
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light."

Glancing at Dalton, she nodded in agreement.
Apr 2, 2025 4:43 pm
After introducing himself to the rest of the reptilians, Al joined the conversation the group was having.

"I believe that we all have valid points. I agree that our main priority should be to get home, alive. But as I mentioned, I have a suspicion we weren’t brought here by accident. Whatever that means, we have to be vigilant. Maybe we have a part to play in the events of this world…"

"In any case, I’m thinking that if we can help these creatures, then they can help us get to where we need to be. I wouldn’t mind making allies along our journey, especially ones good at navigating."
Apr 2, 2025 9:04 pm
Novac, despite his disbelief, respected his companions choice. "Gorsok, we'll try to clear your home. Point us the way. If we don't return in a few days, assume we're dead. Find a new home." He told his companions, "I vowed to lead the way and I will be true to my word."

"Kobolds," Gorsok corrects Dalton. "Lizardfolk are bigger, but we are closer to the might of our draconic ancestors." He puffs out his chest proudly.
It doesn't take long for you to reach the kobolds' lair. It is a small cave opening in the side of a rocky escarpment. All seems quiet from the outside.

A little too quiet, perhaps...
Apr 3, 2025 2:11 pm
Draconic...

AJ knew that word. What's more, it stirred something within her.

"We'll get your home back."

The words that came out of her mouth weren't English. It was the language of dragons. It would have been surprising if it weren't for all the other crazy things that had happened so far. She smirked before leaving with the others.
Looking at the opening of the cave briefly, the flame-wielder looked back to Novac and whispered.

"So, sneak in again? Or should we head in together this time? Or maybe we could try to lure it out?"

Novac doesn't find any traps at the cave entrance. He cautiously sneaks inside to have a look around. The interior is swathed in shadows, the only light coming from AJ's glow outside of the cave. The small interior has the trappings of a home, with wooden furniture, bowls, and other accoutrements. However, these have all been scattered around the area and the whole place is in disarray.

Something moves in the shadows. Novac glimpses the form of a filthy creature that resembles a small, wide-mouthed fat child made from leaves, vines, tree bark, dirt, and pallid tubers. Unfortunately, Novac is not quite as stealthy as he had hoped. His foot accidentally kicks a fallen bowl, which rattles softly, alerting the creature to his presence. It turns towards the rogue, mouth opening wide to reveal jagged teeth as it starts to shriek!

Watching Novac creep into the cave left AJ burning with anxious anticipation. The sounds of the jungle echoed in her ears as she looked around furtively. She wasn't sure what to expect next, but piercing shrieks weren't very high on the list. Spurred into action, she charged forward until reaching the mouth of the cave. Ignition (Melee Spell Attack vs. AC) - (1d20+7)

(7) + 7 = 14

Ignition Damage - (2d6)

(46) = 10

Neither Dalton nor AJ are able to land a hit on the creature as it dodges and shuffles about. Novac gets behind the thing and slices it with his knife, scoring a deep cut! The monster whirls on the rogue, opening its maw wide as it bites him! It scores a critical hit, its razor-sharp teeth ripping out a huge chunk of flesh from his midsection! Novac falls, bleeding on the cave floor.

The thing then turns to Dalton and sinks its teeth into his leg. Blood flows as it worries the wound and tries to wrap its vines around him, but the monk shakes it off before it can grab a hold.
OOC:
Ouch, a critical hit against Novac for 32 damage! He's down at dying 2 since it was a critical hit. 9 damage to Dalton.

Everybody may act. Novac's initiative moves to just before the enemy's so you have a chance to heal or stabilize him before he needs to start making recovery checks.

Rolls

Jaws vs Novac - (d20+12)

(17) + 12 = 29

(77) + 2 = 16

Overwhelmed by the rush of power, AJ was thrown off slightly when she failed to torch the monster. The sight of Novac's collapse and Dalton's blood spraying from his wound was even more alarming, serving as more kindling for her inner fire. With her other hand this time, a strike of blazing flames was thrown once again at the creature.

"Fight! Live!"

Her shout was accompanied by a wisp of healing flame reaching delicately from her off-hand to the unarmed fighter next to her. With Novac on the other side of the monster, he remained unreachable without ceasing her attacks.
OOC:
Melee Ignition again. 1 action Heal for Dalton since we're side-by-side.

Rolls

Dalton sees Novac go down, but has little chance to do anything as the creature turns on him next. Barely avoiding being grappled by the thing. As AJ attacks it, Dalton moves to the other side to try to divide the creatures attention. Glowing runes on his arms, he attempts to attack again.
OOC:

Conditions: Conditions: Sickened 2, Slowed 1
Not sure when Sickened starts to drop.

Action 1: Move to flank the creature with AJ. Hoping to reduce its AC.

Still feeling the rush of adrenaline from the battle, Al scrambles to dig up the soil around them as he yells to the group.

"We can use this! Try rubbing it over your wounds"
OOC:
Al will cast the Healing Plaster cantrip as many times as needed.

You purify some dirt or mud into a pliable, claylike plaster that can aid in clotting and healing. This restorative substance can be used in lieu of healer's tools for Medicine checks to Administer First Aid or Treat Wounds. If the plaster isn't used within the spell's duration, or if you Cast the Spell again before using the plaster, it reverts to being normal non-magical earth (Duration is 10 minutes).

Novac took the plaster Al had created and applied it to Dalton's wounds before tending to his own. The adrenaline was wearing off, leaving him weak and shaky. He wondered if it was the rush or the significant bite the creature had taken from him; the memory of that pain made him hesitate. "We almost died, you know," he murmured to himself. "This could have been the end." His voice faded. Once he had finished applying the plaster to both Dalton and himself, he leaned back against the wall, closing his eyes. "Why did we do this? We could have simply taken them with us and found them a new home."

Dalton was in darkness, drifting away to somewhere, when the potion jarred him back to conscious. The smell of burning leaves filled his nose as he opened his eyes and tried to sit up. His head swam and he felt like he was going to throw up. Seeing the creature was not moving, Dalton slid across the ground to get away from the fire and collapsed on his back.

"We won?" he said weakly. Raising a shaking hand in a thumbs up sign. "Good job team."

Dalton heard Novac, but he just lay there for a long moment. "I thought maybe I would wake up back home."

He felt Novac put some of the healing mud on his wounds, finally he pulled himself over to sit with Novac, watching the fire burn. He had to remind himself that pile of leaves had just recently been trying to eat him.

"Damn potato."

Dalton pulled out his waterskin and took a drink, offered it to Novac. "In my past life, I never drank alcohol, not even once. We get attacked by too many more vegetables I might have to start."

Dalton accepted some more mud from Al and spread it on his wounds. It went against everything he had been taught in first aid, but seemed right here for some reason.

"This is their home." he looked at Novac "and it seemed like something we should do - help that family. If they came with us, how many of those kids would get eaten by the next snake or mutant rose bush. Now - they can come home."

Still flooded with power and adrenaline, AJ simply stood over the corpse of the monster for a moment. Wiping away beads of sweat from her forehead, she looked to the others. With plenty of power to spare, the pyromancer clenched her fists and unleashed a wave of heat that healed wounds as it passed over her allies. Her breath finally began to slow.

"Yeah, what Dalton said. Traveling would have been dangerous for them too. Finding a safe place in this jungle probably isn't easy either. I know I don't have a lot of space to talk as someone who didn't get mauled by that thing, but we did good, as batshit scary as it was. These powers and skills we have... are they really random? I feel like we're meant to have them. Use them. I don't know. Maybe it's all just cosmic randomness, but I feel like they have a purpose. And using them to make some kind of difference here today makes me feel like we did the right thing. I'm sure I'd be more conflicted if it was me bleeding everywhere, but it is what it is."

Seeing Dalton's thumbs up, AJ stepped forward and grabbed his wrist, bumping her fist into his with a grin. Notably, her skin is still almost scalding to the touch.

"Fuck yeah, dude. You're a badass. I was also a bartender back on Earth. If we can find some good stuff, hopefully I can make you a good cocktail if you want. I would fucking love a drink right now."

Al breathed a sigh of relief as he saw Novac and Dalton begin to get up off the ground.

That was too close. I’m glad you’re all ok though. I’m glad this magic mud helped, although I don’t even know how or why it does work… There’s just so much we don’t know. After this, we definitely have to travel quietly.

Al grimaced as he saw the last of his companion’s wounds fade away.

Let’s hope that the worst is behind us.
Apr 9, 2025 5:10 pm
Dalton felt the wave of healing. Combined with the magic mud, he was feeling healed, but stiff.

"Checking where that thing came from and if there are more, probably good idea... in a few minutes."

Dalton also made no move to stand up right away. After about 5 more minutes he reluctantly climbed to his feet.

"Al, this mud really works, but I would love a shower at this point. I think they said that thing came from below, so might be a hole in the back of the cave somewhere."
Apr 9, 2025 6:34 pm
"Yeah, I'm gonna take this moment to rest too."

AJ sits down with the others, leaning her back against a cave wall. After a minute, her eyes close as she focuses on the well of flame within her. The vision of fire is clear within her mind's eye. Her soul continues to burn, filling her with warmth and power. Grinning, she opens her eyes and stands up to join the party 10 minutes later.

"Let us ensure that the likes of this abomination will never return."

The edges of her shadow shifted like a pyre on the wall behind her. Reconnecting with that well made her feel powerful, and she always had a flare for the dramatic.

Once everyone seemed ready, Novac reluctantly got up. "Okay, I guess I'll go first. I'll try to sneak up to anything ahead of us." He thought for a moment and added, "Maybe we should stay closer together this time." Novac carefully started working his way deeper into the cave, his eyes peeled for any traps or monsters ahead of him.
Apr 9, 2025 10:15 pm
Dalton nodded to Novac, "My old life, I'm about at quiet as a train wreck, but I'm definitely fast and quiet now. If you want to take point, I can hang back ten feet or so. Although, it will get dark the farther in we go, so once we need light, quiet won't matter so much with the light giving us away."
OOC:

Also refocusing - thanks for the reminder AJ - so Dalton may stay down a bit longer as needed.
Apr 9, 2025 10:32 pm
"Good point," Novac takes the lantern he had taken when the elves gave them some equipment. "I thought this might come in handy at one point. Still, it helps to be quiet."

A search around the kobolds' lair reveals no more surprises waiting for you. You find the tunnel through which the plant monster burrowed up into their home. It's a simple matter to collapse it to ensure nothing else can use it to gain access.

When you report back to the kobolds about your success, they are overjoyed. The kobolds grin as they quickly set about tidying up their home. "We cannot thank you enough, friends," Gorsok says. "We found a few magical trinkets a while back. Please, take them as a sign of our appreciation."

The kobolds offer you a potion of emergency escape, a potency crystal, and a shielding salve.
OOC:
Everybody gains 1 Hero Point!

Novac smiles at Gorsok. "Thank you for these trinkets; they will significantly improve our chances of survival in the coming days. I wish you and your family good fortune." Turning to his companions, he suggests, "Perhaps we should make some progress before we settle down for the night?"
Apr 10, 2025 8:15 pm
"We're glad to have helped! Thank you very much for these as well. We've got a long journey ahead of us, and these treasures might be the difference between life and death. Do you know of any other dangers we might best avoid in the area on our way to Nantambu?"

AJ smiles and releases a heavy exhale while observing the fruits of their accomplishment. Looking to Nova, she simply nods, not wanting to waste any time.
Apr 10, 2025 10:04 pm
Al thanks Gorsok for the gifts and turns to his party.

Yea, let's get going. The sooner we get out of this jungle, the better. At the very least, I'll keep an eye out for magic. Or what I think is magic... I can sort of see an aura around that crystal.

OOC:

Dalton will do Defend - make sure that shield is ready :)
Apr 11, 2025 12:17 pm
The kobolds warn you of a few large animals in the area. You navigate around their hunting grounds as you continue on, the rest of the day passing uneventfully. You set up camp for the night and settle down for a well-deserved rest.

Unfortunately, when you wake up, everybody but Al has become rather ill. You feel feverish and nauseous, with severe abdominal pain. Novac seems to have gotten the worst of it.
OOC:
AJ and Dalton are at stage 1 of the disease and are each sickened 1. Novac critically failed his initial saving throw, so he is at stage 2 and is fatigued and sickened 1. Victims can’t recover from the sickened condition from dysentery until the disease is cured.

Everybody who has contracted the disease can attempt another DC 16 Fortitude save the next time you rest to try to recover. A success reduces the disease's stage by 1, a critical success reduces it by 2.. If it gets to 0, you are cured. You could try to use Medicine to Treat Disease, but that takes 8 hours so you'd make no progress in traveling today. You can also use a lesser antiplague to gain a +2 item bonus on saves against disease for 24 hours, which includes the save against the disease's progression.

With her inner monologue overridden by the intensity of how sick she felt, AJ just stayed lying down in her tent, waiting for the stomach pain to pass.

"I feel like death. I don't think I'm going to get very far if we move."

Her voice was hoarse, barely loud enough to be heard through the tent.
OOC:
Assuming those vials of antiplague we drank will come into play now. This is rough!
Apr 11, 2025 2:17 pm
Seeing that his companions have all fallen ill, Al will try and find some water for them to wash or cool themselves.

No rush, AJ. We can take our time today and see how we’re all faring. I can try and scout ahead in a bit to get an idea of our surroundings.
OOC:
Al will use the cantrip Know the Way to make sure the party is still travelling on the right course.

In your mind's eye, you magically reorient yourself. You immediately know which direction is north (if it exists at your current location), and you can choose a location you were at within the last 24 hours and learn what direction it lies.
Apr 11, 2025 3:29 pm
Novac feeling like shit decides to take it slow. Probably the damage fight. You don't get half your body bitten of without consequences.

OOC:
Yes, this was from your initial Fortitude save of 6 before you drank the antiplague. The +2 will apply to your next save.
Apr 11, 2025 6:40 pm
"Let's not travel today. If we face any dangers, we won't stand a chance. Almost dying yesterday was enough for me." Novac takes out the healers kit and rummages through it in search for anything that would help with his condition.

Dalton felt horrible agonizing stomach pains, sadly he was quite accustomed to such things. To bad he had not been carrying his Pepto when he went out to shovel snow. He felt very disappointed, having been in this new form for a while, he thought that all of his past issues were put into the past life, but here he was suffering as he had so often before. It was not until he realized that two other members of the group were also struggling that he realized it might be environmental and not his normal dietary issues.

"I agree, we seem to need some rest. We should probably be boiling our drinking water. Anyone grab a cooking pot when collecting supplies?"

Dalton digs through the healing supplies, pulling out a few items which look like they will help with the symptoms that they were dealing with. As he began to mix a couple of things which he knew would help, he wondered again how he knew these things would help.
Apr 12, 2025 12:00 pm
Not knowing what he was truly dealing with, Dalton treated himself as best he could, trying to stay hydrated and making sure the others did as well. He remained by the fire while he could - curled up in his sleeping space when he needed to rest.

Dalton decided it best to take the strange potion they had been given, not knowing how bad this could get, but seeing that Novac was suffering poorly already.

AJ briefly opens her eyes to watch the others.

"It seems like y'all know what you're doing. Any advice? Other than just laying here and trying not to die. The most ill I've ever been before was the flu, and I was bedridden for a week..."

Her brain was too fogged by fatigue and fever to really feel any emotion strongly, but she knew logically she should be scared. But all she wanted was to just sleep.
Apr 13, 2025 6:45 pm
"Knowing what I'm doing? No idea. Just trying not to feel like crap" Looking at his fellow sufferer, he remarked, "So, superpowers don't stop you from getting sick, huh?" Novac laughed, it hurt ...bad "I thought the wildlife and monsters were the main threat. Now it looks like a jungle bug will be our end."
Apr 14, 2025 11:51 am
Al smiled weakly at Novac.

Not exactly what you want to hear from your patient. I know I’m not sick, but I think you all should pull through.
Apr 14, 2025 12:41 pm
"Nah. I wish this fire could burn out disease, but it doesn't seem to be the case. Just a regular ass fever right now. And hopefully you're right, Al. I don't wanna die to fantasy malaria."

AJ crawls back into her tent, turning her bedroll over as to not sleep on the side that was soaked with sweat.
Apr 15, 2025 12:27 am
Dalton shrugged, "I've had an unfortunate amount of experience with digestive issues. Usually I carry medicine with me most places I go, but I was in my front yard when I fell here. Best I can say, make sure you keep sipping water, dehydration can come on fast."

He glanced around the camp, hearing AJ's comment about death by fantasy malaria. "Nor do I."
Apr 15, 2025 12:29 pm

Great, thanks for clarifying! ...Well, that was unfortunate. :'(
Thrashing sleep, clinging sweat, and unceasing sounds of jungle life all combined to form what felt like torture. AJ did not leave her tent when dawn came, but remained trapped in her own head. What if I'm actually going to die here? What if this is it? I get thrown here to die for no reason. Images of her loved ones flitted through her mind's eye. Her core shook with desire to scream and rage, unleashing fire on the uncaring jungle, but the illness had sapped her energy. After a few moments, the desire rattled loose and her shoulders sunk again. Detached from feeling and thought, her eyes simply stared up at her tent.

Waking up in the morning to find that some of his companions have recovered somewhat, Al thinks of the journey ahead.

How’s everyone feeling today? Do we need another day to fully recover?
Apr 15, 2025 7:31 pm
"I think I'm feeling a bit better. But maybe we should take it slow; a little more rest would be fine. I really wish there was a village where we could stop. I'm not an outdoors person, and never have been," Novac said, glancing around. "Never will be." he added.
Apr 15, 2025 9:02 pm
Dalton awoke weakened, but feeling better overall. "I agree. My idea of camping is an air conditioned cabin in the woods with wifi."

He took a slow breath, "I think I have shaken it, but I think I heard AJ restless last night. We may need to try to stay another day. I agree though, it would be better to not be in the middle of the jungle, but I fear we have few options at the moment."

Dalton looked around, "Al, you don't happen to have a magic mud for this? or perhaps know something in nature that may help us to beat this?"

"The items I mixed up for myself yesterday from the first aid kit seemed to help, so I'll try that for anyone who remains sick today."

Dissociation was interrupted by the sound of her name from outside the tent. AJ rolled over onto her side, groaning.

"I feel like fucking dogshit. Worse than yesterday. Stomach is eating me alive from the inside. Couldn't sleep worth a shit. If you want me to move, you're gonna have to push me."

Reaching into her pack, she retrieved the second vial of lesser antiplague. The fluid was choked down as quickly as she could manage after popping the stopper.
Apr 16, 2025 3:54 pm
Stifling a laugh, Novac said, "We're not going anywhere; none of us feels up to it. However, we shouldn't stay too long either. Animals, or worse, will eventually show up." For the umpteenth time, he willed himself back into his "real" life, but to no avail. This seemed to be his new reality, and he hated every minute of it. "You know," he mentioned to the others, "maybe we all did die, and this is hell or purgatory. I mean, it sure feels like it!"

Still in a daze, it took a moment for the realization to coldly set in that she implied her prior manhood. AJ stared at the floor of her tent uncomfortably, feeling a tightness in her throat.
Apr 16, 2025 5:42 pm
Novac looked at AJ. "What do you mean by 'sexy woman'? What were you before? Ugly?" Novac thought back to the beginning. "You definitely were taller, judging by your clothes. Oh well, none of my business really, just musing about the curse that brought us here."
Apr 17, 2025 1:38 am
I can try, but I think the mud is for wounds. In any case, it might help with your recovery, AJ.

And don’t worry, I’d also like to find out why I’m green and have tusks. Being the nature guy, it’s a bit on the nose, eh?
OOC:
Al will use his downtime action to Treat Disease to help AJ using Healing Plaster in place of a healer’s kit.

You spend at least 8 hours caring for a diseased creature. Attempt a Medicine check against the disease's DC. After you attempt to Treat a Disease for a creature, you can't try again until after that creature's next save against the disease.

Critical Success You grant the creature a +4 circumstance bonus to its next saving throw against the disease.

Success You grant the creature a +2 circumstance bonus to its next saving throw against the disease.

Critical Failure Your efforts cause the creature to take a –2 circumstance penalty to its next save against the disease.

The overall lack of reaction to her implication allowed the tension to leave her.

"Well, I'd say I was decent looking before, but now I'm a bombshell. And yeah if you can do anything to help, Al, then please do. I wasn't given shit for knowledge about medicine. As for the green with tusks thing, I'd think it'd be more stereotypical if you were some kind of barbarian. But that's more of a D&D type thing. Maybe the orcs here are in tune with nature? I dunno."

AJ did whatever Al asked, cooperating as much as she could despite how awful she felt.

You stay in the camp another day, hoping to allow AJ and Novac a chance to fully recover. Unfortunately, today seems like it won't be as uneventful as the previous day.

It is late in the morning when Dalton notices movement in the brush surrounding your camp. Creeping closer is a reptilian creature, lean and muscular. It has a long tail and two powerful legs that end in feet topped with wicked talons. Thatches of vibrantly colored feathers adorn its body. The beast opens its mouth in a chirping hiss as it prepares to pounce!

Dalton spots the predator right before it is ready to attack - was it alone? - had he missed another one in the area?

Looked like a raptor from one of those Jurassic Park movies - those always hunted in packs - and they killed everything they could find in the movies. Letting it pounce seemed like a bad idea.

"We're under attack!!" he says loudly.

Just as panic was about to set in about being eaten by a dinosaur, Dalton felt himself settle into a fighting stance, allowing instinct and training he did not understand take over.

Grabbing his shield, Dalton quickly moves to the creature. Channeling his inner strength, he lashes out with a flurry of strikes! His first critical blow shatters the beast’s jaw, while the second hit sends it sprawling to the ground, where it lies still!

He has only a moment to celebrate his swift victory before the second feathered beast leaps out from his flank! It rushes in to slash at him with its foot talons! Fortunately, Dalton dodges the clever girl’s attacks!

I just realized that Dalton could attack now since you said "Everyone". I think Novac and Al may have taken care of the second one.
Apr 21, 2025 12:06 pm
OOC:
Yes they did, I was unable to post this weekend.
Before AJ can bring her magic to bear, Al zaps the beast with electricity, and then Novac slips in behind it. With two shanks of his blade into the creature's vulnerable spots, he takes out the feathered foe!
Apr 21, 2025 3:58 pm
The scent of burning meat from Al's electricity made AJ's stomach turn. Eager to get back to rest, she turned away from the group and went back inside her tent.

"Good that not everything here is as dangerous as the demonic plant thing."

She muttered to herself as she lied down.
Apr 21, 2025 4:02 pm
"We really shouldn't stay here much longer. Those dead birds are bound to attract animals." Novac glanced around, a worried expression on his face. "Maybe we can just move a little ways." Looking at AJ with concern, he said, "I can carry you for a bit if you're having trouble walking."
Apr 21, 2025 4:47 pm
"No, I can walk if we need to. Just let me know what we're doing. It's hard to give a shit when I feel like this."

AJ sat back up, leaning against her backpack so she could at least be closer to eye level with her companions. Though it didn't seem that would matter when she just shut them immediately.
Apr 21, 2025 5:08 pm
I think our best option might be to push forward at a slow but careful pace. Maybe we can blend in a little that way. What do you all think?
Apr 21, 2025 5:11 pm
"Will we have time to keep trying to treat me and travel? It's been taking us the better part of the day to try treating this shit."
Apr 21, 2025 5:28 pm
"Al is right. Let's walk for an hour or so and then find a spot to rest. It's too dangerous to stay here." Despite feeling weak and queasy, Novac slowly started to pack up their gear, trying his best to methodically organize things while keeping a lookout for more predators.
Apr 22, 2025 12:01 am
Dalton looked down at the bird he had smashed with his bare hands. "Well, at least I'm not bleeding this time, but I agree. This will attract scavengers or worse. Lets just move camp a mile or so. Just so we are not right here with the smell of fresh blood. We'll go slow and not far."

Remembering how he felt yesterday and a hundred times before, "AJ, I'll pack up your tent and carry your gear while we move. Al, you want to help Novac?"

Dalton would help the others in whatever way he could. Once camp was setup, be would stand watch for any other surprises,

"I don't know what was in those vials, but I wish they had given us more of them. If we ever run into another village, we may have to see about trading for them, although I don't think we have anything of value. God I hope we are not here long enough to learn how to skin animals and trade pelts - although they seem to keep coming to us."

He looked out at the jungle, "I should have watched more survival series... like those where they drop a guy in the woods naked. Who would have thought that was a future life lesson. My brother-in-law would thrive here - hunter, fisher - skins his own animals. Real outdoorsman..." Dalton shakes his head, realizing he is just rambling, he grows quiet and lets people rest as he keep watch.
Apr 22, 2025 2:07 pm
After setting up camp, Al would sit down with the others while listening to Dalton speak.

You’re telling me, I only watched nature documentaries which are amazing to watch… but less relevant when the animals are trying to rip you apart. At least I could remember how to put together a basic shelter.

Al glances upwards, trying to see the sky through the jungle canopy.

I wonder what’s going on back home…
Apr 22, 2025 3:04 pm
"Bah, I never left the city. There aren't enough opportunities out there in nature. I mostly waited around for the rich people to leave for their holidays...easy pickings." He missed being home; he hated this jungle and everything in it. "You know what I miss most? Showers! And not having different kinds of blood or ichor on my clothes and on my body."

AJ gave a nod of gratitude to Dalton as she handed off most of her gear and camping supplies. Moving to the new encampment was arduous. More than once she was tempted to collapse on the ground or set fire to the trees out of raging despair. It was followed by a night just as agonizing than the last. She twisted, turned, and groaned feverishly. Her moments of lucidity were populated by the terror that she might actually be dying. If it was just the disease, then maybe it would have been fine, but the hellishly humid and hot jungle climate merely compounded matters. In the morning, the weakened woman would call out to the others.

"I still feel awful. Not any better."

You travel slowly, taking turns helping AJ along as she continues to suffer from the sickness. Despite the pace, by the time evening approaches, you are able to reach the banks of the river. Under Al's direction, you set up a secure camp nearby. The fresh water from the river is a welcome addition to your provisions. No creatures disturb you during the night.

AJ drags herself alongside the other, accepting the offers of help from her companions. The idea of someone else carrying her rattled loose a significant feeling of vulnerability. I'm not sure if it's just because I'm a woman now, but it certainly doesn't help. Despite the discomfort elicited by the feeling, she wouldn't resist. Pain and fatigue from the illness crushed any notion of resisting. Refusing help would be stupid. The sight and sound of the flowing water was beautiful after feeling suffocated by the seemingly endless trees of the jungle.

"Great, I'm going to lie down now."

She collapsed nearby, too tired to do or say anything else. Seeing Dalton approach and help with her recovery managed to give her the energy for two more dry words before she was done until the morning.

"Thanks, superhero."

With relief that AJ was feeling better, Novac surveyed their situation. Well, at least the water issue is resolved. He took the chance for a quick wash, though a prickle of unease kept him near the bank, his eyes darting across the water. Who knows what kind of things could be lurking in there? "You know, I watched a ton of National Geographic in prison," he said aloud. "There was this one raft-building episode. Didn't strike me as rocket science. And I think we have thematerials. You spend the day struggling to put a raft together. Unfortunately, your efforts are unsuccessful. You'll have to try again tomorrow. As you are preparing to leave the riverside, though, what looked at first to be just a log floating down the river reveals itself to be a hungry crocodile! Before you can even react, the crocodile surges up out of the water, clamping its jaws shut painfully around Al's midsection! The croc releases Al and opens its jaws to prepare to attack again!

With the wonder of sound sleep, AJ remained in her tent for significantly longer the following morning. After at least a couple hours of extra sleep, she rose with an exaggerated stretch and yawn. The illness finally seemed to have passed. Although they still struggled through this miserable jungle, it was hard not to have a strong sense of gratitude for not just feeling like death. She wasn't much use at all for building the raft outside of menial tasks, but she tried her best to contribute. The crocodile's ambush put a damper on any gratitude she was feeling for her condition that day, bringing back the adrenaline of desperate survival.

AJ scorches the crocodile as Novac slices it in a vulnerable spot. Dalton delivers a solid blow, then Al calls on his magic to transform his hand into a savage claw and slashes with it, heroically scoring a critical hit! He rips open the reptile's throat, and it collapses at his feet, blood pouring from the fatal wound!
Apr 28, 2025 6:56 pm
Instinctively, AJ stepped over to Al and channeled her healing fires into his wounds. She stared at the dark green fluid that had seeped out of him for a moment. That's so weird. Her eyes darted over to the beast and the "raft".

"That's a lot of blood. I didn't realize how brutal you could get, man. Looks like we're uhh, gonna need more time to get that together. Can't wait for something else in this damn jungle to try killing us tomorrow."

Bitter sarcasm gave voice to the frustration she had already experienced throughout much of this journey. The high of power didn't last nearly long enough to distract her from her aching body and the overbearing climate.
Apr 28, 2025 8:30 pm
Dalton watched AJ heal Al's wounds. He still was not used to the fact that she could do that. "It does seem that there is no shortage of things trying to eat us. We seem to be getting pretty good at dealing with them, but I wouldn't mind a break from one of us getting bitten."

He looked a the croc, "What do we do with him now? Last time we moved on. I guess we could head down stream a bit or maybe we push him into the river and let him float away? Or we bury him? Never thought I'd wish to be able to google 'what to do with a dead crocodile in the jungle'"
Apr 29, 2025 6:55 am
"We could just push it back in. But hey, at least we learned something today. That raft had better be pretty damn sturdy." Novac chuckled nervously, his mind racing with Dalton's words. Were they truly improving at handling those threats? Or was it merely wishful thinking, and the next attack would shatter them? Those thoughts wouldn't help in building the raft. He'd better get back to drafting the next one.

Al would’ve used the time to tend to his wound by covering it with the surrounding soil. Wincing with pain, he looked to AJ and noticed the raft at the same time.

Thanks, AJ. It’s definitely weird to have green blood, which is probably why I’m not freaking out. Hurts the same though.

I gotta say Novac, I’m no boat expert but that’s a damn good job considering our situation.
OOC:
Al will use Treat Wounds and Healing Plaster to heal his wound.

Unlucky rolls haha

I realize I forgot to roll my healing spell, but Brainy said we rested for the night after the combat so you should be good anyway!
"I would suggest we eat the crocodile if it weren't for the fact that none of us know how to butcher or cook the thing. That'd prolly be a lot of food. Ah well, into the river he goes."

All done helping move the carcass, AJ returned to camp with the others for another night of sweaty sleep. She vaguely recalled someone mentioning a shower during her sickened haze. I'd be tempted to go for a dip in the river if I didn't think it would get me eaten by something.

Novac's great success with the raft the following day was met with applause.

"Yeah, gotta agree with Al here. That looks great. And I'd have taken just about anything over walking through this jungle at this point."

Novac couldn't help but be proud of his little arts and crafts project. "I have to say, this thing looks good. It only took us like two days. The dudes from National Geographic didn't take as long," Novac laughed. "Anyway, this should make our journey a little faster. Unfortunately, the raft doesn't come with life jackets or safety instructions. Well, let's pack up and get that thing in the water." Novac started breaking camp and getting ready to leave.

Having done little more than chop wood and gather things for the master crafter, "Excellent work."

As they were getting ready to leave, "My only advice from some boy scout canoe trips is make sure all of your gear is securely bundled and plan to get flipped. Might not be as common with a raft as a canoe, but making sure packs are secured and cannot just fall off and disappear into the river is a good idea."

"Does everyone know how to swim?"

Looking at Dalton with a smile, Novac said, "Sorry, my knowledge about flotation devices ends where the TV show did, so I trust your judgment. I guess we should get our stuff in the middle of the raft." At Dalton's question about swimming, he added, "Well, my old self could swim, at least in a pool. I guess that knowledge would carry over to my new self... hopefully."

After days of trudging through the wild jungle, riding down the river on the raft is a godsend. The current carries the vessel swiftly along its path, and while you have to occasionally steer it around rocks or away from small rapids, overall, the journey is much easier now. You stop when night falls and bring the raft ashore to set up camp, then continue the journey the next day. There are plentiful fish in the river to supplement your rations.

With time to reflect on your recent experiences and your newfound abilities in this strange world, you feel yourselves becoming stronger...
