1828 | Milt’s born on the Dale family ranch in northern Texas, up near the Indian Territory. |
1831 | Milt’s mother dies. |
1844 | When Milt is sixteen, his father Jedediah sends him to the ranch of his old Army friend, Aloysius Duncannon. |
1848 | The Duncannon girl, Martha, turns fifteen and captures Milt’s heart. They spend the next three years in love, and start planning a life together when… |
1850 | The Comanche slaughter everyone on the Dale Ranch. Milt joins up with the Rangers and rides with them for the next ten years, Indian-fighting. |
1860 | After he’s badly hurt and his hearing irreparably damaged in a black powder explosion, Milt leaves the Rangers and returns to Duncannon Ranch where he hopes to reunite with Martha and wed her. Martha, however, has gone and married someone else in the meantime, at the insistence of her father Aloysius. |
1861 | Perhaps broken-hearted, Milt joins back up with the Texas Rangers and fights in the War Between the States. |
1866 | The war is over and Milt is on his own. He does cattle drive and ranch work all over Texas and part of what will eventually become the Oklahoma Territory for the next two years. He sees Martha from time to time, but its too painful to stay near her for long. |
1868 | Milt starts working at the Double D Ranch in the recently reclaimed Federal Lands in the Indian Territory, where freed slaves and other settlers are starting to move to. |
1870 | The current year — Milt has recently become foreman. |
