Etta Karl is a 25-year-old villager from Rackon's Bluff. Etta is an excellent shot with a bow, and has won many a bet from men who underestimated her ability. She can also be stealthy if necessary, and she knows the lay of the land. These skills make her a lethal hunter and scout.

While (mostly) dedicated to the Bluff, she's also a bit of a wild card; for example, she occasionally paints her face with temporary tattoos, sometimes even writing provocative words on her flesh.

Despite her spirited exterior, Etta nurses grievances. Her parents moved to the Bluff when she was a child, to escape the storms and raiders that plagued her coastal village. Therefore, she's not a Thalken, not a descendant of Rackon. While her family is now established at the Bluff, Etta still feels like a second-class citizen, and hasn't forgotten the snide comments people made when she was a newcomer. Few people make such comments nowadays, as they don't want Etta to draw the circle to signify a duel, and then put an arrow between their eyes.

Background vow, Epic: Etta has had surreal dreams for several months, and hears coaxing whispers during her waking hours. These voices and images promise change, opportunity...power. What do they signify? Does she have some special destiny, or are dark forces trying to corrupt her? She's determined to know.

Etta has only told her parents about this, but they just said she was spending too much time in the woods, and was probably just hearing the sounds of nature. This dismissive response has made her reluctant to confide in anyone else.

Update: Her parents are named Keegan and Lyla.

From birth, Ravik Vett seemed destined to remain in the gutter. The son of a prostitute named Elen and (allegedly) a pirate captain named Orson the Blacktide, Ravik grew up in poverty and hopelessness. Always in debt to unsavory characters, his mother frequently moved throughout the Barrier Islands and Ragged Coast of the Ironlands in an attempt to create a new life. But Ravik learned early that the past always catches up.

Eventually, she perished from a wasting disease, likely venereal. Teenage Ravik was left alone to fend for himself. But by now, years of hard living had taught Ravik how to fight, steal, deceive, and manipulate. He began to make a name for himself, and caught the attention of the Black Echo, a guild of assassins and thieves. Already addicted to the adventurous and morally ambiguous lifestyle he was living, Ravik joined them.

Years passed, and Ravik became a man. His stature in the guild grew. He had friends and lovers...though the politicking within the guild required a clever mind and a tough personality to endure. And then came the incident at Witch's Wail, a village along the Ragged Coast.

The master of an orphanage, a kindly older man named Wythe, found himself in desperate need of resources. The winter had been bleak, donations had dried up, and the children in his care were starving. He asked the Black Echo for help, and the Echo loaned ample food and coin, with the understanding that the debt would be repaid in one year's time.

A year passed, but Wythe had barely repaid half his debt. The orders came down: Wythe would die, along with every child in the orphanage.

Stunned, Ravik protested the edict, to no avail. There were forces moving within the guild he couldn't understand...forces darker than he could stomach. Despite his protest (or perhaps, because of it), he was dispatched along with three others to complete this sadistic mission.

But Ravik refused to commit such a deed. He instead poisoned his fellows the night of the planned slaughter, then spirited Wythe and the children to a secret cave in the Havens. He hopes to move them even further inland, far from the Echo, which is strongest on the coast and islands.

Now a marked man, Ravik has vowed to destroy the Black Echo. He'll save the children and Wythe if he can, but he won't let their fates stop him from eradicating this vile guild.

Background vow, Epic: Destroy the Black Echo.

Ranks of the Black Echo

– Shadowsworn
– Nightwalker – Ravik's rank, before leaving
– Unseen
– Oblivion
– The Umbral: the ruling council, composed of nine members. Their abilities have been honed to perfection, and their feats are legendary. Challenging an Umbral is usually suicidal.
