The gentleman eyes the dwarf with apparent interest, looking quite pleased to see his eye catch his own! He speaks in a heavy Bretonnian accent.

"Ah! Monsieur Dwarf! I see you are wanting perhap a game of card? I long to find a fellow ‘oo will play Scarlett Empress with me! Perhap we make a wager? I play for nothing less zan two shilling I am afraid!"

A pint of beer for each of your fellow travelers will cost you 12 Pennies
Sliding into the seat across from the man, the Grotnar gives an amused laugh. "2 schilling it is, deal em cards!. He'll look to Anders with a nod, as if to ask if he will be joining the game.

Grotnar will settles in with his drink, only slightly aware that the others are planning the next job. As the man deals the cards, he'll observe the man more closely, trying to get an idea how serious of a player the gentleman is. "So what brings you all the way out here, Mr....?

Disregarding the card players, Artur says to Agnes: "Well, I have been asked to go to Altdorf. If catching a few thieves is the best way to achieve this, so be it. But we need to secure our seats first, I guess." Acting on his own thought, he approaches the drunken coach, and, trying to take his most accommodating voice, he asks: "Hello there, fellas. My companions and I need to reach Altdorf, and you seem to be driving the only coaches going that way in days. Would there be any room left for us in one of your vehicles?"

He dealt out the cards with extreme expertise.
OOC:
If Anders would like to join the game, he may. All who are in the game may roll a Challenging (+0) Gamble test. If Grotnar wishes to observe the man’s character to learn more about him, roll a Challenging (+0) Intuition test.

The coachmen barely seem to notice you at first, so loud is their riotous laughter. Soon, however, they calm down just enough to notice they’re being spoken to.

"Oh well, ‘ello, preachuh! T’ain’t no room inside it, I’m afraid, that lady there…"

He pointed most rudely to the noble woman and her entourage.

"She’s taken up the entire inside for ‘er lackeys and all her numerous hats, she has! It’s a fair full go of it, we got that Bretonnian popinjay and that nerdy student over there goin’ too… you’d ’ave to all squeeze up on top with us… but the good news is, I’m outta drinkin’ money, so I’ll let you and yours ride with us for…"

He and his thinner colleague confer a moment…

"Four shillings apiece?
OOC:
Even without an intuition test, you can tell he’s high balling you. You may attempt a haggle test, clever roleplaying, or another relevant skill to see if they will lower their demands.

Speaking to Agnes, "Mine purse is empty and it would do us no good to enter the city without money. I would see us—for it seems we are an us now—take that job first."

He pays no heed to the gambler. Though he has some practice at cards and dice, he was always luckiest against other dwarves, and drunk ones at that. Men tended to be far too clever for his liking.

"I am afraid we don't have that kind of money. Besides, I vowed to give my spare coins to the poor. It was nice talking to you." That said he turns around, takes one step. Then stops and turns back. "Are you sure you won't reconsider? After all, a few more drinks is far better than no more drinks, isn't it?"

He steps closer and lowers his voice before adding: "Plus my dwarven slayer friend there already killed a mutant today, and is in a very bad mood -- he doesn't like the rain so much, nor does he like waiting. It would be unfortunate if he learns that he won't be able to ride your coach because you are a bit too greedy, wouldn't it?" He points at Svegnir, with a forced grin.

Artur looks at the coachman, curious of his reaction.

The coachmen, swallowing somewhat as he looked at the Slayer… both coachmen conferred a few moments longer in quiet whispers… before finally clearing his throat, and in his most dignified drunken slur managed to say

"I’m a godly man, I am, and a friend to dwarfs, as Sigmar commanded, says I! You and yer… Slayer companion can ride free… your fellow travelers? Can we agree on 3 Shillings a piece, seeing as how they’re with you two?"
Jun 1, 2025 3:13 am
Svegnir, who was very much not paying attention, is busy pulling some sort of bone fragment from his magnificent mohawk. Those mutants tended to end up everywhere.

Grotnar is only slightly taken back at the deftness of the man's ability to deal out cards. But he had come to play and relax, so he'll lean back and continue small talk without trying to read to much into the situation.

Ignoring the comment about the Emperor, Grotnar carries on while examining his cards. "A bunk, ya say? We're passing through as well. Had some caravan trouble just down the road. Name's Grotnar by the way, I don't believe I caught yours"

Anders thinks "oh no they noticed me" Anders was not unfamiliar with Scarlett Empress though he himself stayed away from gambling for he did not trust his luck. In this situation however he does not see a way out of this. "Well i wouldn't call myself an envoy i am but a humble boatman, if you want i can play a round to satisfy your curiosity" Anders is sure he is planning something but he will walk over regardless
OOC:
Roll a gamble test if you wish to join the game!
Jun 2, 2025 7:47 am
Anders getting the tacit approval he wanted will sit down and play into the card sharp's hand... Right until he reveals his own experience with gambling and takes a winning hand against his opponent. He had in fact played Scarlet empress before, picked it up in tavern similar to this one actually, lost quite abit of coin before getting the hang of it

The cards fly from the Bretonnian’s fingers with surprising Dexterity. Speaking to Grotnar, as everyone antes 2 shillings apiece, he says:

"I am ashamed to say, Monsieur Dwarf, but is true, tis pity is, tis true! I am on ze run from lady troubles! Oh, ‘ow rude of me, Monsieur Dwarf, I am, ‘ow you say… forgetting my manners? My name is Phillipe! Phillipe Descartes! And yours, my Dwarf friend? And you, Monsieur Boatman?"

As he dealt the cards, Anders found himself with four aces, Grotnar with a pair of kings. Philippe, with a -5 SL, turned over a bluffing hand with what looked as if it could be a straight, if inoy one card weren’t off.

"Ah, Monsieur, you won! You won! ‘Ow thrilling for you, mon amis! Perhaps we play again? Perhap anuzzer game at 2 Shillong each?"
OOC:
Grit bar had lost 2 shillings, Andre’s has won 4 shillings.

Svegnir nurses his beer, a most undwarflike act. He had learned early that not every night was as flush with ale as it had been at home. With each sip, something indiscernible flashes across his face.
OOC:
Happy hanging out while the other gamble!

The innkeeper, seeing you drink slowly, takes it as an opportunity to begin speaking to you rapidly, and with barely a breath in-between. A friendly jab, he seems incapable of shutting up.

"…last time we ‘ad a Slayer in ‘ere, must’ve been oh… three years past? A jolly fellow, ‘e was, drunk up four kegs of ale on ‘is way to fight Minotaurs at the Middenheim Carnival ‘e were! ‘E told us done bloodcurdling stories about fightin’ Greenskins in Black Fire pass! Say, speaking of Black Fire pass, did you ‘ear Colonel Sievers of the Imperial Ostlanders just left from there ‘eaded to Altdorf? ‘E must’ve won a great victory over those damnable orcs, ‘E must’ve!"

Artur nods at the coachman. "That is very gracious of you. I will talk with my friends to check if it is agreeable to them."

Moving to Agnes and Svegnir, the priest explains the arrangement with the coachmen in between the conversation with the inn keeper.

Then he progresses to the gambling table and says to the bretonnian, pronouncing the first sentence with a strong accent: "Bonjour monsieur, désolé de vous interrompre. May I have a quick word with my companions here?" Then he tells them about the arrangement as well. "Don't gamble everything if you want to be able to pay the fee. In any case, we might need to chase the bandit mentioned on the billboard." he concludes.

The Bretonnian, somewhat taken aback by someone speaking his native language, says in fluent Bretonnian.

"Oh, cheers, mate, wanna try your luck? A few shillings could save a lot of orphans and sick folk, mate!"
