On the surface, the Empire is all but invincible. It is the greatest of the Old World’s realms, both in extent and in military might. Founded two and a half millennia ago, it has withstood countless assaults by Greenskins, Skaven, Chaos, and its many neighbors. Beneath the banner of the twin-tailed comet, emblem of its founder-god Sigmar Heldenhammer, the State Armies of the Empire take to the field behind their mighty Griffon-Riding Emperor, confident of victory.

However, scratch the surface and peer just beneath, and things take on a different aspect. There are worrying rumors concerning the Emperor’s health, and he hasn’t been near his Griffon for months. Deep in the remote forests of this vast realm, Beastmen and worse still lurk, even though the forces of Chaos were expelled from the land two centuries ago. The taint of Chaos touches everywhere, inflicting strange mutations that force good folk to hide from their neighbors or face the flames of the witch hunters. Strange and secretive cults worship blasphemous gods with titles like "the Changer of the Ways," "the Prince of Pleasure," and "the Father of Decay."

Beyond the Empire’s borders, past the icy fringes of Kislev and Norsca, the swelling forces of Chaos in habit the twisted and unnatural Northern Chaos Wastes. Leaders rise and fall, amassing armies to raid and plunder, only to have them disperse again.

It has been two centuries since any Champion of Chaos has arisen with the strength to unite the Enemy Without. But, rumor suggests a new Chosen of the Ruinous Powers walks the north, and is binding the warlike tribes together. So, the rulers of the Old World do not relax their vigilance. They keep their eyes steadily on this terrible external threat. And, in doing so, they overlook the Enemy Within.

On the Northern road, ironically enough, heading southward toward Altdorf, our party thought they were on the homeward stretch of a journey that would be relatively straightforward. The chills of winter had at last abated, and a heavier than expected Spring rain season had caused many of the rivers of glorious Talabecland to flood. Boatmen of the Reikland, long accustomed to shipping grain from the vast bounty of the province were left with no ships capable nor river men daring to make a crossing in those waterways, and so, our own boatmen is off to Altdorf at the behest of his longtime friend, Josef Quartjin, a bear of a boat captain, truly one of the nicest, most generous men to ply the rivers of the Empire, wrote him a letter (dictated as he cannot read, and read, as neither can our intrepid boatmen), to join him in Altdorf for a job and vacation opportunity all in one! Josef even generously sent the messenger with coin to pay his passage to the great City of Sigmar.

The white wizard sharing his coach had also come from Talabecland, though her errand, far more grave, could strike a terrible blow to the Empire: assigned to assist her Master by singing to aid in his channeling of spells, they were sent to find and eliminate the taint of Nurgle in the vast woods of the province, only to find treachery and politics in their path. Ostland, a province of strong, curt people, saw a terrible tragedy, as the Prince’s only son was murdered. Often at odds with his neighboring province, he immediately declared it to be the work of Talabeclanders. Her teacher, called to assist the government as wizard and as advisor, has sent her to the Colleges to reassign her to a less dangerous post, send a replacement, and request instructions.

Two dwarves of Middenheim, one a soldier in good standing with his clan, has been dispatched with a petition to give to a clerk or messenger of the Emperor, to hear his case: the Graf of Middenheim is set soon to levy unnecessary, unwarranted, injurious, and insulting taxes on all dwarves of the city, and the dwarves, incensed, have decided that apart from fiery protest, must petition his Imperial majesty himself to intervene diplomatically on their behalf: was Sigmar not a dwarf friend? A Slayer, a mysterious, solitary figure, took to the road beside the soldier, perhaps at last to see for himself what manlings could build in the south.

A priest of Shallaya, sworn to do no harm, had also been along the roads of Middenheim, healing the sick and infirmed. As spring is a time of hay fever and infections, he was kept quite busy… when a vision came to him: Altdorf is an open, infectious sore: it festers, and must be cleansed!

After changing coaches to take their final leg of the journey, they began talking, and began to form something of a… tolerance… to one another. (If you wish, you may roleplay this), until, their coachmen were attacked suddenly! Mutants, or Beastmen, or both, in a torrential downpour surrounded and killed the horses, causing the coach to crash. The downpour made the powder of the coachman’s blunderbuss misfire, and he was consumed by a mutant vomiting acid on him! The mutants screamed in murderous rage "Pigs!!! Filth!!! We are the true heirs of this Empire!!! You live a lie!!! Join us, or we shall…!" The slayer dug his axe into the disgusting creature, and destroyed the monologuing miscreant, as the others ran away, disappearing cowards in the thick, horrible rain.

And so it was, wet to the bone, they were forced to trudge the last mile in the mud and muck and rain to their next stop: The Coach and Horses inn.

Feel free to roleplay your reactions to this opening, and everyone roll me a Perception test

Much as he was wont to ride silently and with a dour mood, Svegnir trudged silently and with a dour mood. The rain did little to affect his dyed and greased hair, though some of the staining poured down his face. It became hard to tell what was dye and what was blood, especially in the poor lighting.

Man he had grown accustomed to. It wasn't uncommon for him to trade words with the priest or boatman; he kept a safe distance from the wizard, as dwarves tended to do... but strangely he kept a wide birth from his fellow Dawi (the name they used for themselves). And he never said a word as to why.

One foot after the other, in a sort of swagger that comes from the confident and weary, the Slayer marches on. A bed is not far away, and after that a new day to die.

Stepping into the falling rain, Grotnar hardly thinks twice about the misery of it. Its just another march though the mud. He'll nod approvingly of Svegnir's work in dispatching the mutant, but won't say anything about it. Grotnar walks around the coach, assessing the damage before saying the obvious thing.

"I'm sure this can be salvage if someone wants to come back for it. Come on, we reach the inn quckly if we keep up a good pace."

Then he'll step off in the direction without bothering to see who follows, trying to set a soldiers pace before anyone can object.

At first the trip had been interesting, it was better than singing every morning to help light the candles and she was one of the lucky ones a hierophant had liked her voice the sweet alto was, he said, just right for his needs. So off she went on a ‘simple’ trip. Politics had ended up getting in the way and the simple trip had become actually dangerous and so off she went back to the academy.

At least one of the dwarves had mostly avoided her and the other wasn’t very talkative. The priest and the boatman seemed a bit more genial but they hadn’t really had a whole lot of time to get to know each other when their carriage was attacked. One of the dwarves killed the mutant that had attacked but, it seemed the carriage itself was a lost cause.

She ended up getting out of the carriage, wincing when her robes got muddy, then shaking it off and looking at the wheel with the Grotnar. Her cynicism was rewarded as she spoke, "I figured we wouldn’t be able to fix it here. Like as not someone will come by and ransack it for useful parts." She follows behind the dwarf as best she can knowing for sure that her robes are a lost cause. The beautiful white was assuredly going to be dingy and awful and then she’d have to spend hours trying to clean them. The black robes had it easy…

Anders should have known it was too good to be true. A vacation and a business opportunity there was no way something wasn't going to wrong, and if that wasn't enough two dwarves, a priest and a lady wearing robes like that all in the same in carriage? One need not be a priest of moor to see this doom incoming. Stepping out into the rain (of which he was accustomed) after being beset by beastmen (of which he slightly less accustomed) Anders can only say. "at least it seems land travel industry is fairing as poorly as the rivers have been" Anders not having any better ideas will follow the dwarf as he wonders who fate had confused him with to put him in group like this.

Artur takes one last look at the dead coachman, who was beyond saving, no prayer could change anything to that fact. Still he whispers a short one, for the mercy of his soul at least. He spends less time looking at the monstrous creature who attacked them. After all these years, he is still not sure what healing would mean for such a being.

The rain reminds him soon enough that he shouldn't dwell there, however grim the scene is. Or because it is. He makes haste to catch up with the others, his hood covering his head. When he arrives at the same level as the dwarf slayer, he says: "I should thank you, master dwarf. Even though this is not my preferred way, this was probably the only one to deal with this abomination."

He does not say anything more before reaching the inn.

The Adventurers, soaked to the skin, and miserable, find it a bit difficult to see what’s coming, eyes full of rain water. Finally able to just barely make out smoke from the chimney of a nearby Coaching Inn, their steps grow lighter, defying the leaden heaviness in their legs. The sound of an approaching Coach barely registered, as they finally could make out its approach, slowly moving out of the road… all except Anders. Weighed down by misery, cold, and trembling, he had inwardly been wondering if food and warmth yet awaited him, when the coachman, an angry looking, hideous man, sitting shotgun, and carrying the instrument of his duties, shouted "Out of the way, ragamuffin!!!" At the bedraggled boatman!

Tripping in the mud as he flung himself aside, Anders was very nearly crushed under the weight of the massive coach, but more terrifyingly, a sound, like thunder, as the coachman riding shotgun blasted the Blunderbuss! Anderson was not struck, by the grace of Sigmar, but Anders landed hard onto packed mud, winded.

You suffer 1 Fatigued condition until you have the opportunity to rest for 1 hour

The rest of the journey is relatively dull, but the closer they get to the nearby inn, The Coach and Horses, the second to last stop before you were to reach Altdorf. The Coach outside (horses stabled, leaving the coach, belonging to Ratchett Coaching Lines (the main competition of the Four Seasons Coaching lines, like the Coach you had all been sharing), is at least a hope that you have a chance to reach Altdorf on time. The smells of reducing strew and the sounds of raucous singing comes from inside the inn’s common room. Upon at last flinging the door open, you immediately see a gaunt, slim barman bringing a wooden tray of beers to a raucously singing couple of revelers… dressed in coachman’s livery, as they drink and sing. A balding, chubby landlord immediately breaks into a massive smile upon seeing you all enter.

"Welcome to the Coach and Horses, gents! Make yourselves at home, and come on in out of the rain! You must be soaked to the bone, friends! Pull up a chair and sit close to the fire if it suits you! My, but your boots are muddy, don’t tell me you walked all this long way! Can I get you a meal, maybe something to drink? Herpin! Herpin, take their order, would yeh?! Tell me, good friends! What news have you? Where have yeh come from, and where will yeh go?"

The innkeeper, obviously a friendly sort, clearly has something of the endless ability to chat. Your fellow tavern patrons are few and far between, though an eclectic group to say the least: apart from the barman, innkeeper, and rather boisterous coachmen, you see a very gorgeously dressed woman, apparently a noble, seated with her servant, who doesn’t even look at the door as it opens. Her servant, a pretty young thing, keeps her head down and her mouth shut as she embroiders quietly, serving her lady ship if, and when required. At the end of their table sits a lady who could not be more different: muscular, armed with a sword, and wearing leather armor, with "Lady’s Bodyguard" written all over her.

A handsome, mustached man sits at a table near the bar by himself, shuffling cards, and making a show of being lonely as he sips a glass of red wine. In a corner nearest the fire sits a rather slender man with a puddling bowl haircut, reading a boring looking book that Agnes can read as "Leeches and their Curative Properties".

What does the party wish to do?

"How much for food and drink?" asks Artur, intent on making his boots and hood dry by the fire while he sits and eat some sort of sustenance. He does not plan to engage to coachman yet, but wonders if he can use his service going to Altdorf. On that thought he turns to the coachman again and adds: "Are you expecting other coaches going to Altdorf within the next few hours?"

The coach drivers either ignore or don’t hear the request, as they continue to sing drunkenly, downing mug after mug of beer. The innkeeper, chuckling at their boisterousness, answers for you. "I’s expecting a coach from the Four Seasons coaching line several hours ago! Not sure what became of them, perhaps they’ve broken down! The next coach after them won’t be for days yet, I’m afraid. A pint of ale at the tap’ll run you 3 pennies, a shilling for a nice bowl of rabbit stew! A pint o’ Bugman’s Best, as it is my finest ale is 9 pennies! What with the grain running short, I may have to raise prices on it with the flooding in Talabecland! Any bloodcurdling takes from the road? Any gossip? If so, I might be inclined to see a pint or two your way on the house! I’m a man what loves the spoken word, I am!"

The Slayer, weary from the day, wants nothing more than to put his feet up and fill his belly with ale. "How much for a night?" he inquires gruffly, his eyes looking around for that coachman who had run them off the road. He stills his twitchy fingers, knowing that splitting a skull in the center of the coaching inn would bring about a most inglorious death.

His purse is nearly empty, and the dull brass sheen from within taunts him. Death is his business, but it does not pay well.

The coach what nearly run you down was headed in the opposite direction, but the two coachmen, drunkenly laughing riotously wore the livery of the same coaching company. They laughed uproariously, sounding like braying jackasses as they continued to pour beer down their throats.

Great job! Though it’s Talabecland and Sigmar for future reference!

The innkeeper listens intently, mouth going more and more agape with every passing word! He made the sign of the hammer at the mention of mutants attacking your coach!

"Sigmar preserve us from the Ruinous Powers!" The innkeeper intoned, "Herpin! Herpin, bring this man a pint of Bugman’s Best, and a bowl of stew! In fact, that rabbit’s soon to turn, bring every one of them a bowl of stew and a pint… a pint of… simpler ale for t’others, mind, that Bugman’s got to last!"

Herpin, the slender, stoic barman, merely nodded in response, fetching bowls of hot rabbit stew and ale. You lot must’ve been on the coach I’s expecting’! Well, make yourselves good and comfortable, the Four Seasons coaching company ain’t soon to set foot in ‘ere for a few days yet… the coach leaving in the mornin’ is run by those fellows." He pointed to the drunken louts singing loudly, already calling for more ale. "The roads’ll only get worse, as the Emperor’s recently pulled the soldiers off regular patrol to go to bleedin’ Ubersreik to quell the place, since ‘e found out the Jungfreuds were all traitors to the Empire! Good to root them out, I s’pose, but it does ‘amper road travel, as you lot clearly found out! My family and I ‘ave always been strong supporters of the Emperors, but even the best of them make questionable decisions! Look at Magnus the Pious! Establishing the colleges of magic, setting wizards loose in Altdorf a… and…" The Innkeeper suddenly noticed that one among your number, despite being soaked and muddy, was clearly wearing a wizard’s robe. He cleared his throat, "And we certainly can’t thank him enough for that!"

Obviously desperate to change the subject, he went on, "Speaking on strange goin’s on, the village of Teufelfeuer was recently burnt down by that famous witch hunter, Faberous Heinzdork! Supposedly, ‘e found out the entire town were in league with Daemons! I ‘eard some nonsense that a warrant were issued for ‘is arrest over the affair, but that can’t be! Imagine arresting a right decent witch hunter for doin’ his Sigmar given duty!"

The stew is warm, the rabbit meat falling off the bone, though a bit ripe: the innkeeper spoke true when he said it was close to going bad. The parsnips are tender, as are the carrots and cabbage. It’s hardly fancy fare, but the ale is far from the worst you’ve ever drunk, and a warm bowl of stew does wonders to chase off the chill.

Agnes tended towards quiet in situations with large crowds. Memorable moments at the wrong side of a witch burning would do that. She listens well though and is more than thankful for the food though enough that she ignored the Innkeeper’s indiscretion and decided to go back to her prime concern which was getting back to the college.

She looks over at the drunken pair and does some relatively simple math, "Shilling for the rabbit so two shillings for food for a day and then the price of the room on top. Hmm, I don’t suppose there’s a job board around here somewhere or maybe you might know some folks who have some odd jobs that need to be done?" She flutters her eyelashes as best she can trying to charm her way into some sort of job while she is waiting.

Artur looked at the Dwarf Slayer and his pouch. The 'keeper didn't spell out the price for a night at the inn, but it would probably be too expensive for most of the people from the broken coach. "Is there a possibility to stay for the night?" he attempts. Unable to read, the Slayer knows wanted posters when he sees them. The notice board has only two notices that haven’t been ripped down, either by adventurer’s who’ve taken them for themselves, or by outlaws themselves pretending to take the bounty. An unimpressive notice hangs low which simply has a large "HELP" heading it, followed by a hen scratched note that anyone capable of reading would have a difficult time understanding, let alone an illiterate. A far more impressive notice, however, the Slayer may not be able to read, but quite obviously announced "WANTED: BOLD ADVENTURERS!" Even illiterate, the Slayer can smell an opportunity for gold and adventure. Perhaps the priest of the witch can read?

The notice appears old, perhaps a month or so… Agnes will recall that she heard that Hergard’s son had recently been killed while on sone mission for his father… could this be…?

The other notice, scrawled in a hen scratch so difficult to read, it may as well be smeared ink, reads:

The mohawked dwarf listens to the woman as she spells out the wanted notices. He doesn't seem to react to the prejudice against dwarfs, but instead shows intrigue in the second listing. "Bandits are always good for coin, if not from the farmers than from the city. But there may be trolls in the mountains, and they would make for a most glorious death."

Artur reads the advertisement himself after hearing it first from Agnes, and ponders: "Where do we need to go if we are to answer this call from Hergard von Tassen Tassenick?" raising his eyes to look at his companions of misfortune, he adds: "I suppose it is in Altdorf, isn't it?"
May 29, 2025 11:45 pm
She looks to Artur and says, "Likely the situation in Altdorf is the very one my master is currently embroiled in. The Prince’s son was murdered, accusations have been flying and my master felt it would be too dangerous for an apprentice. The bandits on the other hand might be more my speed as all I can really channel are simple light spells. Nothing for healing and certainly not the massive beams of radiance my master can pull down."

She glances over where Andre’s is adding, "We should also keep an eye on out boatman lest the card sharps drain him of all his money. I don’t trust those fellows."
May 29, 2025 11:53 pm
OOC GM: So gentlemen and lady, you have two coachmen set soon to rush to Altdorf in the morning who are rather drunk and dining, the Innkeeper, the Batman, a student, a noblewoman and her servant and bodyguard, and a Bretonnian card player. Knowing the coachmen are likely your quickest way to get to Altdorf, but you’ll likely have to pay, the card player might lose some money to you, and that there are bandits nearby, what do we want to do?

A pint of beer for each of your fellow travelers will cost you 12 Pennies
Sliding into the seat across from the man, the Grotnar gives an amused laugh. "2 schilling it is, deal em cards!. He'll look to Anders with a nod, as if to ask if he will be joining the game.

Grotnar will settles in with his drink, only slightly aware that the others are planning the next job. As the man deals the cards, he'll observe the man more closely, trying to get an idea how serious of a player the gentleman is. "So what brings you all the way out here, Mr....?

Disregarding the card players, Artur says to Agnes: "Well, I have been asked to go to Altdorf. If catching a few thieves is the best way to achieve this, so be it. But we need to secure our seats first, I guess." Acting on his own thought, he approaches the drunken coach, and, trying to take his most accommodating voice, he asks: "Hello there, fellas. The coachmen barely seem to notice you at first, so loud is their riotous laughter. Soon, however, they calm down just enough to notice they’re being spoken to.

"Oh well, ‘ello, preachuh! T’ain’t no room inside it, I’m afraid, that lady there…"

He pointed most rudely to the noble woman and her entourage.

"She’s taken up the entire inside for ‘er lackeys and all her numerous hats, she has! It’s a fair full go of it, we got that Bretonnian popinjay and that nerdy student over there goin’ too… you’d ’ave to all squeeze up on top with us… but the good news is, I’m outta drinkin’ money, so I’ll let you and yours ride with us for…"

He and his thinner colleague confer a moment…

Speaking to Agnes, "Mine purse is empty and it would do us no good to enter the city without money. I would see us—for it seems we are an us now—take that job first."

He pays no heed to the gambler. Though he has some practice at cards and dice, he was always luckiest against other dwarves, and drunk ones at that. Men tended to be far too clever for his liking.

Ignoring the comment about the Emperor, Grotnar carries on while examining his cards. "A bunk, ya say? We're passing through as well. Had some caravan trouble just down the road. Name's Grotnar by the way, I don't believe I caught yours"

The cards fly from the Bretonnian’s fingers with surprising Dexterity. Speaking to Grotnar, as everyone antes 2 shillings apiece, he says:

"I am ashamed to say, Monsieur Dwarf, but is true, tis pity is, tis true! I am on ze run from lady troubles! Oh, ‘ow rude of me, Monsieur Dwarf, I am, ‘ow you say… forgetting my manners? My name is Phillipe! Phillipe Descartes! And yours, my Dwarf friend? And you, Monsieur Boatman?"

As he dealt the cards, Anders found himself with four aces, Grotnar with a pair of kings. Philippe, with a -5 SL, turned over a bluffing hand with what looked as if it could be a straight, if inoy one card weren’t off.

"Ah, Monsieur, you won! You won! ‘Ow thrilling for you, mon amis! Perhaps we play again? Perhap anuzzer game at 2 Shillong each?"

Moving to Agnes and Svegnir, the priest explains the arrangement with the coachmen in between the conversation with the inn keeper.

Then he progresses to the gambling table and says to the bretonnian, pronouncing the first sentence with a strong accent: "Bonjour monsieur, désolé de vous interrompre. Ralf walked through the mud-sogged road cursing his luck. He was supposed to reach his new post, but whatever happened, either by the fickle nature of fate or his own damn luck, this journey had been riddled with obstacles and problems at every step. He was soaked, his boots were squelching on the road, sending mud everywhere, absorbing the water, and keeping some stuck underneath the sole. Some unseen rocks will surely make short work of his old boots, so he watched his steps carefully while navigating the puddles on the road. These were Empire-paved roads, but unfortunately the toll gates have eaten up all the pennies instead of sending them for repairs. He smirked in disgust as more rainwater drenched his eyebrows, forcing him to adjust his hood and grasp the cloak tighter. Was it a stupid decision to leave the broken carriage and walk back to the coaching inn? Perhaps not. Who was going to get drenched in the middle of nowhere, with fear of getting robbed by mutants and bandits waiting to get afflicted by Morr's rattle? Not to mention all the weird travelling group who refused to return. It was better to get a place of warmth and atleast have a decent night's rest. Maybe he will meet another coach? All this time as he walked, he couldn't see any road warden, either. He instinctively quickened his pace in order to reach The Coaches and Horses.

All this time as he walked, he couldn't see any road warden, either. He instinctively quickened his pace in order to reach The Coaches and Horses.
Upon returning to the inn you had left from this morning, you found it warmer and somehow brighter than it was before. The smell of rabbit stew, and the sounds of drunken partying assailed you, as the coachmen of the Coach here were drunken, stupidly singing, and occasionally vomiting. The others here were a motley bunch, a white wizard woman, a slayer, a soldier, a priest, a boatman, and a skinny little nobody reading a boring book by the fire. The friendly innkeeper immediately shouted a greeting.

"Ah, Herr Reuter! Welcome back! Anything amiss? Your coach left this very forenoon if I’m not mistaken? Accident? Or something worse? These gentlemen and lady were attacked by mutants if you can believe it!"
Jun 10, 2025 9:22 pm
Reuter tried to scrub off any residual mud before entering and waved at the innkeeper with a smile, "A broken axle in a puddle. Tis my unlucky day. Thanks for your hospitality again, but I feel much safer here, than waiting outside with a stranded coach. Has any more coach arrived? Or any road wardens? Times bad as it is. If the coach is not fixed, the road will be blocked in this rain."

He looked around the strange assemblage of people. Especially the slayer and the wizard. However, he was relieved to see a priest of Shallya.

At the mention of mutants he raised his eyebrows, "Tis bad news, that coach and its passenger can become a target of attack."
The innkeeper shook his head

"Only these gentlemen here, they’re to leave tomorrow morning! After that, I don’t expect a coach for a week or more!"

"We’ll take you along for 3 shillings, Sir! It’ll be a squeeze, you’ll have to ride on top, as the lady who’s rented the inside has taken it all for her hats!"
Jun 11, 2025 9:11 am
Ralf looked at the lady and then at the coachmen with a worried expression, "There is a coach broken and stranded in the middle of the road. Shouldn't you be worrying about what will happen to them? I suggest we move out today. Maybe we can lend them a hand?"

He then eyed the noblewoman's entourage and approached the servant woman, elaborately bowing, trying not to make a fool of himself, "A good day to you and your ladyship! When the horizon lies dark and gloom, the skies cry their endless complaints, your face and grace makes it worth braving the roads, so why you remain silent? By Sigmar's blessing, do I have the luck to stumble upon such beauty on my way through the Empire roads? My lady, pardon my intrusion, but I couldn't help but witness your distress. Your Ladyship is waiting for someone? The roads are treacherous; the weather more fickle than ever. Today's rain can become tomorrow's gale. I suggest your lady move to the next coaching inn immediately. Small steps to reach her destination and also a chance to meet the distraught carriage ahead. Judging by such a pretty woman, I believe your Lady has an equally compassionate heart to look after the common folk. So, I request you to beseech thy Lady to move immediately. Oh, and perhaps to witness such a beautiful a woman working for a noble lady, can I request a position within the carriage to make this journey memorable?"

The coachmen seem unconcerned, and even if they were, they’re far too drunk, insisting that the coachmen are likely already done repairing the axel and at the next coaching inn by now.

As you catch the noblewoman on the stairs, although she finds you somewhat attractive, she doesn’t even speak to you. Her servant simply looks at her eye, and says:

"Please leave her ladyship alone."

He turned back and walked to the drunken coachmen, "Hoo there, gentlemen, 3 shillings is a tad more expensive. How about I buy you a round of drinks and you make it 1 shilling for me? I get to travel, you get to drink. What say you?"

The coachmen look at one another before clinking their points together, laughing in jollity.

"You’ve a fine bargain there, lad!"

They accept your round of pints, 6 pennies served by the innkeeper, and your single shilling. You will now be headed to Altdorf with this coach in the morning.
Jun 12, 2025 1:44 pm
Artur looks at the newcomer with interest, observing how skillful and enterprising he is. It makes him smile, all the more that his day obviously did not start under the best omen.

"I am Artur Dünn, nice to meet you sir Reuter. You don't seem to be wounded or sick in any way, but in any case, your spirits are up, which is a good thing! Where are you going exactly?" he asks, curious.
Jun 12, 2025 2:11 pm
Ralf smiled as the priest came and greeted him, "Greetings, Sir Dünn, it is a reassuring sight to see a priest of goddess Shallya on the way. With the blasted weather and the constant downpour, it's a matter of time before the diseases start to spread. I myself was worried about contracting Morr's rattle, but by the goddess's blessing and Sigmar's will, I am still fine. I work on the riverways and am going back to Altdorf to be reassigned. Which is why I am in such a hurry, you know. The weather now is particularly bad with so much rain. Streams and canals are all flooded, which made me think that it would be a good year for my work. But, instead, river travel has shrunk and not much to do with flooded riverways."
Jun 12, 2025 7:27 pm
She gives the newcomer a nods, "Well, it looks like we will be sharing a carriage. I am Agnes Cooperstreet, a student at the University." As if her white robe and sigils didn’t basically advertise that she was a wizard or most would say ‘witch’
Jun 13, 2025 3:21 am
Ralf eyed the wizard warily but gave her a worried but friendly smile. He had heard things about them, but someone from the University of Altdorf was not to be messed with. "Good day to you, ma'am. Are you perhaps returning to Altdorf?"
Jun 13, 2025 12:50 pm
"It seems we are all going to Altdorf, for one reason or another. Thus our presence in this coaching inn!" Artur smiles, but seems dismayed at his own joke. He usually isn't used to speak humorously. He looks with suspicion at his mug. It has been a long night...
OOC:
How do we go about payment? Should we deduct any expense right now? Is the innkeeper going to charge anything for the night?
Jun 13, 2025 12:55 pm
OOC:
The innkeeper was moved by your story, so you are allowed to sleep in the common area for free, but to get to Altdorf, Agnes and Grotnar must come up with 2 shillings each. Thats 24 pennies.

Spotting the inn, Bee slipped from the mule, giving the creature a pat on the nose. As much as she enjoyed catching up with her cousin, Bo was going the wrong way, and she knew that he'd travel all the way to Altdorf even if it was the wrong way. Besides a hot meal and more comfortable seats was worth spending a few coins.

After a few more minutes of hugs and promises to write, Bee made her way inside the place, taking down her hood and enjoying the warmth of the place. As she did her Watch eyes scanned the room looking for any potential problems, not that she was currently on duty, not after what she did to her previous Captain's fancy boots. That done, she made her way to the bar and climbed up onto one of the bar stools.

"A beer and something warming, please!"
food first, then she'd find out about coaches to the big city.

"You are going to Altforf? I seems to be the case of all of us, then. I guess your best bet is to talk to these coachmen." he points at the drunk drivers. "At this stage, they should pretty much accept anyone at any price..." He grins, then takes a small sip from his mug.
Jun 18, 2025 2:20 pm
The coachmen are both more or less at the vomiting drunk stage at this point…. Their songs are now little more than silly humming as they struggle to find any more coin to pay for any more drinking money.
Jun 18, 2025 3:35 pm
Ralf eyed the halfling woman and said, "Looks like we all need to go to Altdorf but I hope the previous carriage has been fixed by now. It got broken down in the middle of the road and I had to come back here on foot. Hopefully they have fixed their axle and started moving or else we will potentially get a road block."
Jun 19, 2025 11:56 am
"We will have to check on that in the morning, I guess!" answers Artur, even though the remark wasn't necessarily addressed to him.

Artur then starts helping organize the room for the night, seeing the that night has come and everybody obviously needed to rest before the expected endeavors of the next day.

Anyone wishing to pay the coachmen to get to Altdorf, or to pay for a private room, now is the time. If everyone is prepared, those who are sleeping in the common area can roll me an Average (+20) Endurance test as you have to sleep in awkward positions in chairs, or on the comfiest bit of floor you can find.
Jun 19, 2025 5:07 pm
Ralf had slept in worse condition when travelling through the river ways. A place like the common room of the inn would fare much better. He placed his head on his arms on the table and tried to get some sleep before morning.

Could she endure sleeping on the floor? Apparently living in the comforts of the wizard's college had made her soft because this place was just the worst. Then again maybe if people sleeping down here wouldn't mumble about burning witches and the like she wouldn't need to keep one eye open?

Whatever the true case was Agnes was much the worse for wear in the morning.

The morning dawned, though the rain outside was still coming down in soft droplets, the sky dark enough to make one think it was still night. The noblewoman from the night before was giving curt, short commands to her servant to load the coach up with bags x after box of hats, as her bodyguard looked on, amused to be seeing the young lady bullied. The Bretonnian card player greeted you all with a smile as he drank beer and ate a breakfast of buttered bread crusts, shuffling his cards in an obvious display of showmanship. The young student was yawning softly, his pudding bowl haircut disheveled as he tried reading his book on leeches.

Only the two coachmen were conspicuously absent, though the sound of vomiting soon alerted you to their presence.

The innkeeper, affable as always clapped you one after the other on the shoulder, with a bellowed good morning.

"Mornin’, friends! Can I get anyone a beer? Maybe some gruel? Not much, but you’ll not have a shot at a proper meal for a few more hours, I’m afraid!"
Jun 23, 2025 2:12 pm
Ralf greeted the innkeeper and said, "Morning! Lets have some gruel and eggs before I set out. How much will that be?" He eyed the noble lady's entourage and kept a note of their activity, trying to locate the coachmen who were absent. However the sound of vomiting signaled their presence though he doubted about their ability to drive the carriage in this condition.
Jun 23, 2025 2:56 pm
"1 Shilling, m’good man! The eggs were cooked in the same grease from her ladyship’s bacon, so they’ll be good and tasty, I guarantee!"

Outside, the two coachmen were doing their best to rally themselves, encouraging one another between bouts of vomiting.

"Right… y’can do thish… Itsh only a short drive t… bwahhhhhhh checchhhhh!!!!"

"Don’t start, you’ll get me going t… wacchhhh!!!! Acchhhh!!!!!"

With a job like Bee's, you learned to get sleep and food where you could, and ignore the aches and pains of wandering the streets at stupid times of the morning. So, stretching to get some circulation back, she helped herself to some of the gruel, food to live rather than food to live by!

"Knowing coachmen, I'd be more worried by one that's sober! Still, I hope they don't take too long, have places to be!" she looked at everyone else and added "Y'all travellin' together?"

The Coachmen, still rather horribly hung over, are at least able to get into their seats now. The one riding shotgun has to shake himself out of snoring multiple times, as everyone rises to the top of the coach. It’s crowded up there, with the Boatman you met on the last coach ride, the pudding bowl hair cutted scholar, the Bretonnian gambler, and all of you. With rain consistently pelting you all, it’s particularly uncomfortable. Only the high born lady, her servant, and bodyguard are at all comfy, as they, and bid after box of hats are in the belly of the beast.

The coachmen continually fall asleep, having to be shaken awake, or shouted at the get up… it’s slow going, especially when, unconscious, one of the coachmen nearly steers off the road and into a tree. Before long, under their inept ministrations, the horses begin to slow to a crawl.

Annoyance, however, turns to terror, as. Sudden bend in the road leads to a horrific scene. Yards away, what looks like a corpse is partially sunken into the muddy road ahead. A figure, hooded and cloak stands over him. A hideous sound… like wet munching, is barely audible over the rainfall. The hooded figure raises his head to reveal a severed human hand dangles from his mouth, as bright yellow pus drops from his mouth alongside oozing blood as he continues to gnaw the hand… he growls hideously before leaping at your coach, madness filling barely visible eyes. Sobering up instantly, the coachman riding shotgun attempts to fire his blunderbuss at the creature, but the rain had soaked the black powder.

The mutant roars in agony as his flailing, scaled left arm has that staff crack down on it! He screams in an inhuman rage, coughing up thick, disgusting mucus, the rough staff, little more than a long stick rebuffed somewhat by thick, almost reptilian hide.

Agnes nearly falls over in fear. She is not getting near that thing and it takes true mental fortitude just to put a stone in her sling. She spins the leather cord and releases the bullet at the mutant.

Perhaps she ought to have kept her eyes open though as the stone flies off into a random direction.

The growling mutant gave a hideous laugh, the stone crashing into a nearby tree.

Jul 1, 2025 3:04 am
Grotnar stumbles in his fear at the surprise of the attack, but tries to recover himself while he watches his comrades engage. He gets himself up, despite the initial terror in his chest, and rushes to attack.

He swings his sword with as much strength as he could muster, making contact with a slice of his trusty blade. (Damage 7)

With a sickening "Whack!!!" The soldier’s weapon split through the mutant’s skull, spraying blood and brain matter over every single one of the group. The mutant growled even in death, pus covered jaws snapping as he writhed in silent suffering a few seconds… too stubborn to know he was dead. The coachmen were busy vomiting at the disgusting sight, her ladyship’s maid in the coach poking out her head to airily cry out:

"Her lady ship demands to know what the holdup is!"

Artur cannot erase the grimace on his face for a little while, after which he eventually gets some composure. He dusts himself and cleans his dress as much as he can, trying to expose his skin as little as he can to the mutant's remains.

Then he goes down and opens the coach's door. "The convoy was attacked by a mutant. We were fortunate to dispose of it quickly. It will take some time before everyone is fit enough to resume travelling." He darts his eyes right into those of the lady. "You will have to be patient."

Breathing heavily, Grotnar just looks at the body under the axe without concern with the blood that now stains everyone. He'll lift the axe head out and give it a shake.

The dead man lying on the road is wearing a coachman’s livery. A broken whip handle is in his hand. Ralf immediately recognizes him as one of the coachmen who was on the coach he was on last night… he also has a sleeved mail shirt on.
Jul 3, 2025 11:26 am
"We should do something for the poor man!" the still recovering Bee said, looking at the poor Coachman "Or at least take something to the next inn to pass on to the family." she wasn't above searching the dead, but she didn't know if her new travel companion would have a problem with that

"That however..." she gestures to the mutant "... we should either burn it or dump it in the ditch."
Jul 3, 2025 7:09 pm
Her heart slows down and she looks at the two dead bodies. "I think I will just stay up here. Anyone going down maybe stab the mutant again just to be sure…"
Jul 4, 2025 7:46 am
Ralf turned to others, "Damn! This is the man that drove the carriage in which I was previously travelling. The carriage broke down, and they wanted to repair it. But, if I can remember correctly, the carriage was boarded by a lot of people. So...what happened to them?" He laid out the question for everyone else to ponder.
Jul 4, 2025 10:39 am
Artur closes the coach's door, and looks at the two bodies. "They are both beyond healing." he says, as if he had been defeated. "Let's bury both, if anything to keep the road clean and to avoid any additional mischief from that mutant's corpse. With this rain, no point trying to burn anything, anyway."

The priest will help dig the holes, should the party decide to do what he advised.

Agnes attempts to take her own nap as well. She’s no use digging in her current state.
Jul 4, 2025 11:32 pm
Whilst the others busied themselves Bee took a few moments to search the coachman, looking for anything she could return to their family. Whether she wanted to keep the mail or not was beside the point, being human size it wouldn't fit her in any way, shape or form, but maybe someone could make use of it or even earn some coin for them and maybe the coachman relatives.

Of identification, he carried only a bronze symbol which would identify him at a glance, as a driver for the Four Seasons Coaching Company. His whip, or rather what remained of it, was broken in his right hand. If he had any coin, it had been lost en route to here. Aside from his ruined, beaver skin hat and clothes, he wore a sleeved mail shirt and a horrified expression.

Assuming no one assists you in digging, it takes you approximately an hour to bury both bodies. The ground is thankfully soft due to the rain, and that helps you to at least ensure they’re buried deep enough in the ground. The Bretonnian gambler, who had fled with a scream at the sight of the approaching mutant, finally returns as you dig the graves, with apologies that he was merely trying to draw the creature away.
Jul 5, 2025 6:08 pm
Grotnar assists in digging the bodies, but will take the mail if no one seems eager to claim it. He'll slide it off the body once the hole is dug and it is time to move the body.

Ne présumez pas que mes intentions étaient lâches ! J'ai simplement supposé qu'il pourrait y en avoir davantage !

The Bretonnian says as he climbs back aboard, the drivers, waking up slowly begin moving the horses again… after a bend in the road, the coach suddenly comes upon yet another gruesome sight. A coach, flipped completely over at an odd angle, surrounded by misshapen, hideous figures. One, a mutant with a tiny, baby-like head, continues stupidly hacking at a horse, laughing maniacally as he strips flesh from it, stuffing it in his mouth. A mutant with a dog-like head howls from an apparent wound, as a pinheaded mutant seems to be trying to apply healing to him as he lies in the ground. Another mutant, this one with clearly visible hooves, munches softly on a dead man beside the road, a wound at his side hastily bandaged. A final mutant, this one the apparent leader, dressed in filthy, but recognizable finery, a crossbow slung on his shoulder appears to be looting dead bodies.

Doing so would be impossible, as the flipped coach is blocking the road… unless you intend to abandon the coach and run away through the forest.

Artur gathers his companion, and starts brainstorming: "It is doubtful there is another road large enough for this coach in the vicinity. Plus it might not be much more secured than this one. There are half a dozen mutants: if we take down the leader swiftly using surprise, we might have a chance to dispatch the others without too much damage." he says, thinking aloud.

"Victory is not certain, though, for they are mindless, fierce opponents. What do you lot think? Should we go for it?"
Jul 9, 2025 7:54 pm
She shrugs; "I'm not exactly much more than apprentice here so I can produce a small woodland animal, make some lights, or put one to sleep. Beyond that it's my quarterstaff and my sling. Still, I think we really shouldn't be letting mutants loose on the Empire's roads. If you are all in, then so am I."

What wouldn't she do for a decent bow? Even better was actually being able to cast spells from her grimoire. Those were just wishes though not things she was currently able to get so, she loads a bullet into her sling and gets ready to fight. Maybe this time the sling bullet would actually hit something she aimed at?
