kwell, don't forget the rounding rules (I think they're with the chart).

I honestly couldn't say how many points would be good for SS. They tend, to my mind, to provide more information about your PC's "idea" than much else (though they can be very useful, of course).

The Potential Stats aren't used for anything else but indicating how high that stat can go.

Folks, I wont' be able to do all the stuff I wanted to. It's been a busy day, and I really want to get to bed earlier than I have been. I'll get back here tomorrow with more stuff.

Diogenes, your character's done. I just have to print him here for you to copy into your character sheet.

More anon . . . .

OK, so it appears that actually reading the rules actually provide many answers! To my defense, the character sheet, while very cool, included many errors by default...

So it appears that I have 33 DP, plus 9 additional 8 DP for secondary skills. Below is a list of skills of interest to Rangers, I think:

  • Primary skills
    1. Soft Leather AT
    2. One Handed edged weaponS (Sword & Dagger)
    3. Missile weapon (Bow)
    4. Thrown weapon (javelin)
    5. Climbing
    6. Swimming
    7. Riding Animals (Horse)
    8. Stalking & Hiding
    9. Perception
    10. Mentalism spell list
    11. Ambush
    12. Body Development
    13. Language: Caronnese
    14. Language: Ilsigi
  • Secondary skills
    1. Acrobatics
    2. Animal Healing
    3. Contortions
    4. Cookery
    5. Diving
    6. First Aids
    7. Fletching
    8. Foraging
    9. Herding
    10. Lore, General
    11. Music
    12. Signaling
    13. Stargazing
    14. Tracking
    15. Tumbling
    16. Weather watching

Let me know if this is too much, and if you find something obvious is missing.

>shrug< Well, what's too much? You're going to get three levels worth of points to burn, so . . . .
That listing of sword and dagger: is that just learning to use the weapons, or is it referring to "two-weapon combo"?
Is there a "General Lore" skill? Where did you see it?

With regards to sword and dagger, I was simply thinking that these are two interesting and handy weapon skills to have, no particular combo in mind.

About General Lore (or Lore, General), here is what I have in my rulebook (Rolemaster Classic, Character Law):
Quote:

Lore, General: (Me/Re) This skill encompasses the use of informational and academic skills which are available to most people with the determination to learn them. Some examples: Culture Lore (one skill for each culture/race), Fauna Lore, Flora Lore, Heraldry, History (one skill for each field of history), Philosophy, Region Lore (one skill for each region) or Religion.
So I guess I should narrow down the different fields I want to be proficient in. Any thoughts on what would be useful / logical in the setting?

What do you need me to do next, OldGameMasterFox? I'm happy to spend the first round of skill points, roll for potential increases, spend level 2, roll again, then spend level 3.

OK, that's fine.
It's just that there's an actual skill of TWo-Weapon Combo, and I wasn't sure if that's what you were thinking of or just listing the two weapons together.

Yes, you'll need to.
The books I'm using list some specific "Lore Skills": DEmon/Devil Lore, Dragon Lore, FAerie Lore, Fauna Lore, Flora Lore, Herb Lore, Lock Lore, Metal Lore, Poison Lore, Region Lore, Sanity-Healing Lore, stone Lore, Trading Lore, Xeno Lore (all in Compaion II) as well as Specific Knowledge Lore (Companion V). Scholarly competency is considered to be about skill ranks 6 or 7.

As to what "makes sense", that would depend on your character. A thief type would likely be interested in Lock Lore or Poison Lore, a ranger in fauna lore and/or flora lore and/or herb lore, etc.

Did you show me a list of the skills you're looking at for the adolescent tranche?
Jun 20, 2025 3:57 am
Here's the Bounty Hunter skills from Companion 3:
https://i.imgur.com/DICJxYn.jpeg

I'd go with a couple weapon skills, Rigid Leather, Subduing, Tracking, Surveillance, Lie Perception, Ambush, Body Development, Streetwise, Interrogation, Climbing, Stalk and Hide, Perception.
Jun 20, 2025 1:11 pm
Qralloq, for weapons, your 2/5 is for 1H edged, 2/7 is for pole arms, 3/8 is for bows, 4 is for throwing, 6 is for 1H crushing, and 2H is 8.

I noticed Lo Rell has as his "Realm" Arms. That's true, but the space is to record the realm of magic your character is tied to, whether it's to learn magic or defend against it.

If you haven't picked a realm of magic, do it before we start.
Jun 20, 2025 1:39 pm
OK, I've got the numbers (finally!) for your hobbies.
First, complete the selection of your adolescent skill-tranche.
Then, let me know when you're done; before going on to your apprenticeship training, you'll choose one or two skills (any skill [but run it by me first] that has a DP cost lower than 20; this could even be a skill you already have ranks in) as hobbies
After finishing the apprenticeship but before rolling for any spell lists, the skill(s) you chose for hobbies get five skill ranks.
Jun 20, 2025 5:20 pm
Can I make the languages I need my hobby skills? f each of spoken and written.
Jun 20, 2025 7:43 pm
Yup.
Bear in mind you don't know yet _how many_ hobbies you've managed to develop . . . .

I think I'll go with Mentalism, but he's going to be completely hopeless with all three.

OK, Bullseyepsa, you get two hobbies, each with five ranks.
Also, I just noticed you're a point over on your primary skills. And what's with the fractions you listed?

You're right. So let's drop the rank of Ambush (I'm sure I'll pick up more). I have the cost for each skill listed, so it's in the form of

Skillname (1 rank/2nd rank) spent = ranks bought.

For the hobbies let's go with the Spoken and Written language for the local lingo for Sanctuary (which I can't recall the name of right now.)

Well, you would've had to have actually gone to Sanctuary and lived there (remember that we're still working on your adolescent skills). Your PC already has levels in the spoken language of your home area ie Caronne; if you're looking for a foreign language that "luckily" might help you communicate in Sanctuary, there's Ilsigi (written and spoken), which is geographically close to Caronne, so it's very likely your PC could've learned it.

I also rolled your single Body Development die: a one.

I think you can now go on to develop your apprenticeship skills. The same number of points gets used.

It's a hobby, so I don't know that it needs a justification other than it is of interest. Perhaps a childhood friend was from Sanctuary and they used the language as a form of secret code (which fits with the character).
