Two posts in the main/story game thread already and we're off to the races! Or racing off a cliff, it is Midnight we're talking about, time will tell? ;)

Nice intro, sets the mood, intriguing NPCs, and lots of flavorful description (even if it's pretty dreary and putrid...but hey, that's par for Midnight). I hope Wexley Thorn is well-versed in Knowledge Arcana cuz' he may be our only one...

EDIT: @Hero, I like how you gave each NPC character a different color font and bolded text when they speak. It really draws attention to and distinguishes their dialogue.

@everyone: Shall we do that with our PCs?
I picked a Salmon color for Petra because it shows up nicely on whatever dark mode the forum is set on for me, and it slightly resembles part of her outfit in the avatar pic I just managed to upload.

Waiting for everyone to get fully online, off work and home alone today, so I threw in a bonus post. To whoever can see it, I added a Player Notes page. I'm not sure how it works exactly, I may need to do more on my end to make it work, but you should be able to see it (and edit it?) as an easy repository of info as the campaign goes along. Just let me know if you can see it (or my GM) one.

Sorry, I cannot see this Player Notes page, only your 'lock icon' Campaign Docs one. I even tried refreshing the site.

Once available, I will probably 'take notes' on who we met and various gear we came across and so forth. I am naturally nerdy that way and take notes for my tabletop group.

Sorry, should've been more specific, you should see it below the field that you would draft your forum posts. Directly below the rolls functions.

Okay, I saw it in the actual game forum. I had to click the little box next to my Character's name that had 'Player notes' on it.

It's very thorough and handy, saves time. So...we all will see the same notes no matter who edits it, right?

That's the idea, or the hope, I should say. If you can edit it, it should reflect for everyone else since it's linked to a sheet in my library. I can update it, I was hoping you guys could add your own notes as needed though.

I'm going to laugh so hard if one of us puts in a note like "this NPC was so sus" and another writes "great finally meeting a fellow [what I am], totally trustworthy!"

EDIT: But please understand this is not a flaw in the system if something like it happens. It's about what cues people think they see.

Itami should be ready to go soon. New post should be up in the morning for all who post tonight. Waiting to move the scene forward for all our players now that we have anyone. If it takes too long we'll write them in somehow down the line.
Jun 20, 2025 12:34 pm
@WanderOne sorry, should've been more clear. You can do both Perception and Sense motive.
Jun 20, 2025 12:48 pm
Seelah sensed the heck out of that motive lol. Too bad it wasn’t a combat post.
Jun 20, 2025 1:14 pm
Yea, wasn't going to reveal that much about the masked stranger, but Nat 20 is Nat 20.
Jun 20, 2025 4:10 pm
Just to Double check.
Do you want me to be with the party now?
I have no problem if they come across me (and maybe my wogren) while doing the travel.
I am ok with waiting.
Jun 20, 2025 4:13 pm
That was the goal. But you can come in later if that's what you want. I have an idea to bring you and Itami in if this cellar scene escalates to combat.
Jun 20, 2025 5:01 pm
That works for me.

I am picturing my dude sort of like Ulfr from Twilight of the Gods.
Beastly in nature. Doesn't talk much but sniffs around and protects the others.
Doesn't walk with the group but stays along the edge of the woods or scouts ahead at times.
Has no problem pouncing into combat.

This is going to sound really dumb since he's apparently literally named Ulfr... but what is Twilight of the God's? Isn't that just the translation of Ragnarök?

Lol he's a big viking werewolf. I mean... Úlfr means wolf, so that tracks.

Yes you should roll Initiative for efficiency. Am still hoping it will not come to that if we can use Diplomacy instead?

I made a Diplomacy roll, got a 19, and if we are using PF1E rules then anyone can try to add +2 to my result by rolling Diplomacy 10 or better?

I hope it's okay that I rolled first AND I didn't mention OOC what my idea was? We just started playing and I am still learning how much players want to discuss first, or whether we rather just react to each other/the PCs and keep things moving?

Diplo for me was +7 for being a Class Skill I put the full 3 ranks into so it seemed worth a try? Plus my character is a pacifistic healer by nature, more likely to offer to help and be on the same side than to accept fighting as a first or only option.
Jun 20, 2025 10:24 pm
Aid another works as in PF1E.

I'm easy, just reacting you y'all. @Greemology was the one who thought it was a bright idea to call out the NPC who's holding the strings, lol!

You and @Itami will arrive to the Lantern together once he Rogers up. Late arrivals. He's named his character now, so it won't be long.

I have the scene in my head ready to go, it'll be fun. 😈
Jun 20, 2025 11:26 pm
You guys better bring it. I think I’m all out of 20’s. :)
Jun 21, 2025 2:46 pm
Just to clarify Itami and I are the 2 man guarding the trapped door?
Or We are just entering the room seeing the orc and 2 man.
Jun 21, 2025 2:47 pm
Second option. You just made it to The Thirsty Lantern. The first scene has been ongoing as you made your way in.
Jun 21, 2025 2:57 pm
Perfect Thank you.

Do we know about the trapdoor and the meeting happening?
We were invited but needed to take care of something first?
Jun 21, 2025 3:07 pm
You don't know about the trap door explicitly, but it'd be common practice not to have the meeting out in the open.

You were indeed invited and the passphrase was given to you earlier. You know about the rest of the party and that they should be here already. Details as to what's happened up to now though you do not.

What slowed you down is up to you guys, left it vague on purpose.
Jun 22, 2025 4:20 am
FYI, I tried to edit the NPC notes to see what would happen.

I can't add any new text. It's fine though if it's just the GM keeping notes, the basics are all there.
Jun 22, 2025 9:17 am
Lame, was hoping that would work.

Gonna fire a post or two off this morning and then I'll be at reduced capacity for the next few days. Taking my kids to The Wolf Lodge for their birthday (that was not a mistake, they're twins). Will still drop in, respond to PMs/questions, make minor posts to move things along, but large posts will be difficult from my phone. Which honestly all this works out fairly well since we'll be moving into combat/initiative.
Jun 22, 2025 4:46 pm
There is some humor in the first coming up the steps both getting nat 20 initiative.
Jun 22, 2025 4:53 pm

How do you want combat to run?
I know some DMs allow everyone to post their turns ASAP then the DM sorts out the order later. It speeds up combat a little bit.

I have seen others work in groups. So everyone before Colab 1 takes their turn. DM takes a few characters turns, and then the next group goes.
Jun 22, 2025 5:46 pm
I’m great with block initiative, like you just described (everyone before Colab 1 takes their turn etc). This kind of format, it’s just best if we can get those posts in when we can.
Jun 22, 2025 6:28 pm
And here I jump in with a weird turn that's designed to stall the orc until everyone can get upstairs.
Jun 22, 2025 8:53 pm
My two cents for play-by-post, I don't like people taking their turn in a block before all other turns including GMs' have completed in order....

That is using guesswork before you know what situation will exist on your turn, IMHO, and then you have to change your 'anticipated' move into a newer more feasible one... so in the end you haven't actually saved time or effort.

You need to allow for creative interrupting tactics (Readied actions) like Jasir's, and allow for some targets to change position or be taken out of the fight somehow (including fleeing).

Not to mention if you let GM update first, you may be able to speak important update-delivering dialogue on your turn like Greemology has been doing. =)

Iunno, I'm pretty easy either way. I can see blocks making sense for efficiencies sake but Mica also makes a really solid point.

I like to decide what my character does and how they do it.

That being said, if the majority would like to try out doing blocks, we can try it out.

I'm thinking an easy way to keep the efficiency without losing too much time would be if the flow of battle would change your action, you would either A. Get pushed back in initiative or B. I'll act for you, taking your previous action into account and attempting to further whatever goal you were aiming at. Obviously, A. Being the most viable option.

And it's quite possible we're over thinking it and it won't be such a big deal. 🤷‍♂️

Iunno, I'm open to ideas / discussion.
Jun 22, 2025 10:13 pm
I'm fine with whatever is chosen. It's hard for me to imagine that blocks will be much faster than what we've been doing so far. I similarly am disposed towards flexibility as Mica mentioned, but I recognize that I am also biased due to Jasir's abilities being geared towards control. I'm happy to adapt to whatever works best for everyone, though.
Jun 22, 2025 11:37 pm
While I prefer individual non-block based initiatives, because they allow for combat to evolve more organically. It can be a pain to wait for the next person to post, if say, they are at work for most of the day. I've played in both style of game and I'm not 100% convinced either way, I just lean towards the individual as more fun slightly.
Jun 23, 2025 2:16 am
Block initiative or any form of 'posting in anticipation of your turn, rather than on your turn' is about SPEED and simplicity, yes?

It's speediest and simplest therefore, methinks, that--should it happen that a player has 'posted in anticipation' and that choice the PC made is no longer valid, or might provoke an Attack of Opportunity that it would not previously have provoked--that the GM get to use option B mentioned earlier, which is to drop the player's initiative count lower.

IMHO, an early as possible initiative order is an advantage not to be lightly given up.

I say all this as someone who doesn't anticipate any trouble posting at various hours of the day, though. I don't like posting on my phone but I have the option if I'm traveling, and during work hours I always have computer access. -\\(''))//-

I am fine with which ever way.
There is more than one way to skin a cat.

Some of the more technical classes it might be easier to take your turn when it is your turn. The others that are just run up and smack them can do their's whenever it makes sense.

Having a set contingency in place if Action A) doesn't work always go to Action B)
Or as GM make action A) make sense uses it how ever.
Your target died so move onto the next target.
Target to far away move to another or use full movement.
Jun 23, 2025 3:19 am
If at all possible I'd like to avoid the GM needing to take a player's turn in a way that involves any interpretation and improvisation on his part.

It's more work on the GM's shoulders and already full plate with so many NPCs or environment factors to control, it is NOT fun trying to strategize against yourself when you possess classified NPC knowledge, and the GM's interpretation of the player's will might not be how the player would have wanted to improvise when it's said and done.

Maybe there are three assailants, one goes down, and the player would've wanted to focus on the tougher OR the weaker (OR the one closest to OR farthest from other PCs) after that first one was no longer a valid target--and now the GM has to guess, that's just one example.

I've been down the road as GM of taking a player's turn and posting for them and I cannot recommend it.

I particularly got pushback on what square I put a PC in when I had taken their turn for them, but that wasn't even the worst of it. Just sayin' and obviously it is GM's call.
Jun 23, 2025 3:23 am
Yea, I'd prefer not to be changing anyone's actions. I'm just spit balling. I personnally could go either direction. Just want to come to a solution we can either all be happy with or at least accept and not have it ruin the game.
Jun 23, 2025 3:31 am
@WhiteDwarf Sorry, forgot to respond about your knowledge roll. You get 2 pieces of info for your roll. Just let me know what you want them to be.

I want it to be known, that I do not like doing this from my phone. Lol. I have misposted twice today. Messed up like three posts that I had to go back and fix. I miss my computer.

Kids are having fun though. 👍
Jun 23, 2025 3:40 am
How about this:
Let's stick with doing it one by one. You can post ahead of time, and if your action still makes sense when your turn comes, yay! Efficiency! If it doesn't, then correct the action.

Any issues with that?
Jun 23, 2025 3:42 am
One by one, corrections made by player (in proper initiative order) when needed--aye aye!
Jun 23, 2025 3:47 am
@Mica_pun_worthy Let's keep the OoC discussions out of the game thread.

Now I see, the door is not the stairs. Going in a straight line, you could make it to m10 on main floor map. If you need me to lighten up the map, I can do that, lol. I just trying to convey the low-light. Guess I did it too well.

Edit: for further clarification, bran, the token at the bottom of the cellar map, is on the foot of the stairs.

Based on your knowledge shadow roll, not necessarily this exact circumstance. You know:
It's quite common for rebellion circles to be infiltrated. Situations like these are unfortunately not uncommon and one of the major impediments to any coordinated resistance effort.
You suspect that there might be, as it is incredibly uncommon for an orc to operating independently. But the fact that he is here by himself at all is novel in an of itself so wether or not there are reinforcements on the way, or outside, or if any exist at all is up in the air.
Jun 23, 2025 1:40 pm
GM, so does that crit of Varrin's deal 8 or do they need to roll another d3?

GM: I wanna say double the damage on the first die, but technically it would be another roll. You can change it since it'll be a bit before I can post for the NPCs. Moving forward, if the player doesn't roll again by the time I get there, I'll just double it.
Jun 23, 2025 3:06 pm
Lol, the revolution will be fought with cider kegs and beer steins. XD

EDIT: Just re-posting her for my own frame of reference:

Initiative:
Ulfr > Seelah > Jasir > Colab 1 > Orc > Petra > Bran > Azote > Varin > Wexley > Serah > Colab 2

*EXCEPT that Jasir Readied an action for when the orc started to rage, and it went off after Orc's turn. I don't think this changed the order overall though?

So, the way I read it, and I did a little forum digging, the prevailing opinion seems to be the same. If the item in question is being wielded and the initial save is passed, the item in question is not greased. Mostly based on the interpretation of this part of the spell description.

Indeed, Mica. Assuming that the higher initiative modifier breaks ties. Though I get the feeling that the orc might not last long enough for me to get a second turn.

I waned to move up to M8-N8 before. Depending on what the red circle would do to me.

Would I get an AoO also?
Jun 24, 2025 1:48 pm
N8 would give you an AoO.

I'll allow it during this combat, since we're just getting started, moving forward movement needs to be communicated during your turn. Or at least prior to the target NPCs movement.

Edit: hit, but doesn't change result, he's still up, just very very badly hurt. Will write in the action later.

Azote has the path of Naturefriend and it includes "Entangle 1/day" but totally lacks to explain the mechanics. Is that at will, casted, spell-like or what?

It is listed at a 40' radius spread which is incredibly HUGE. Wonder if one could be allowed to make a smaller area of effect? Obviously at 40' radius, it isn't great to use in the civilized area as it will hit multiple buildings no matter what.

That and may a caster end a spell in effect before it is done due to the fact it isn't concentration? For example, Entangle spell will last 30 rounds when casted.
[ +- ] Entangle

@WanderOne: Sounds like a spell-like ability because it is once per day. In Midnight specifically, spell-like means it won't be 'detectable' as magic by an enemy called an astirax....but a spell-like ability does have verbal and somatic components, and if cast within melee range of your enemy they can AOO you.

When I played Pathfinder (first edition), it was not possible to make the effect radius any smaller than what is listed, to answer your other question, with one exception.

Only at higher levels (10 and up) could you change the 'shape' of the spell area (but it's a Feat you must be pretty high level to attain, "Selective Spell").

EDIT: If you see a (D) in the spell description, as you do with entangle, that means you can use a Standard Action to dismiss (end) the spell before its duration runs out.

Would not surprise me if others get greased too. (Reflex save DC 13) Of course, if the guy falls it is worth it. And if he doesn't fall from being pestered by Tork then Azote will cancel spell. Well, if you also don't move you are good. You can stand there and beat on him or AOO if he tries to run.

Jasir should know that 'Grease' is one of Azote's favored spells. By spell casting, Azote is more likely to neutralize rather than kill.

Speaking of casting spells.

Nothing to see here.

Rolls

Azote - (1d100)

(61) = 61

Jasir - (1d100)

(25) = 25

Didn't get a GM's info on below.
WanderOne says:

And speaking of casting spells, Azote has now casted 5 today and 4 of them in the last minute or so. All 5 of these spells (None are cantrips) are channeler and none are naturefriend or innate.

I as non magic user (besides 1 spell which I think I am going to flavor as instincts) I am trying to decide how Varin feels about magic and those who use it in the party.

I think it is more along the lines as he knows it is illegal and doesn't really care. As long as the party isn't using it in Public it doesn't bother him.
If he see spells flying around in a stupid situation he might yell at you and tell you to knock it off.

@Itami: Would you mind putting your PC dialogue in bold to make it more visible? (Optional you can add a distinct color font too for Jasir.)

And good thinking on checking about Fell and whether these enemies (at least 2 dead, maybe all 3) might rise again!

Part of the way I connect to this grimdark setting of forbidden magic/writing/heritages as unique from other RPG settings is through having more paranoia and caution. Your mileage may vary!

How it comes through for Petra is she appreciates any chill attitude...but she actively worries about putting y'all in danger of treason/execution or something worse with her magic getting detected...

So much so that she tries to make it up to you all in various other ways she can think of (besides magic healing although she WILL do that when she feels safe), to be a highly contributing companion worth the risk of traveling alongside.

@Mica_pun_worthy: Yeah. Got it covered. I'm leaning towards Navy with Jasir, which doesn't really show in Dark Themes, but ah well. And yep, can't forget the Fell. Jasir's likely about to pick up the orc's axe and take off some heads since it'd be a pain to have an undead go back home and talk about our secret plans.

Cutting off the heads of potential undead is excellent, pragmatic and pro-active prevention!

In most lore that helps--sometimes you also have to burn the neck to seal the flesh from joining again.

But I confess I have not finished reading through the Midnight lore specifically about their version of zombies.

I like what I saw of Punisher when he showed up in the Daredevil Netflix show (the original three season series).

All PCs will have to grow and become more defined as we play with them and 'react' from their viewpoint, that discovery is always part of the fun. =)

From the Midnight Second Edition book: the deceased is doomed to rise as Fell in 1d4 days unless it is beheaded or its body is destroyed by fire.

So you were right. Those are the two generally accepted ways to prevent Fell. XD I as a player knew this, but we'll see if Jasir's also privy to some knowledge on the subject.

Yep, been driving all day. Playing catch up.

Spells granted by Heroic Paths are spell-like abilities, at will, once a day. This is typically for a spell like.

In the magic section of Adventures in midnight I put this in there:
[ +- ] Abilities that function like Spells:
So, they are detectable... buuut Powers granted by Heroic Paths are Innate Magic, so you can cast them around Black Mirrors without worry of them being absorbed/depressed.

The dismissability question has already been answered, as far as changing it's size, I'd say you can take the feat below and we can work in a custom option for entangle if you'd like.

So, that didn't go exactly as I had planned. The diplomacy check succeeding really threw off the encounter, I adjusted the Orc's CR to compensate a little, but you guys still managed it very easily. Will take that into account for future encounters. At the end of the day though, I'm not mad about it. The plan was to ramp it up along the way. Just... Yea, didn't expect to not get a single hit in. lol.

Loot:
Axe (Don't know where you guys got vardatch from, did I say Vardatch? I thought I was pretty consistent with Axe.)
Breastplate
Dagger x5
Bloodstained leather armor x2
6 days rations

I am slightly confused. I think it is because people are not reading everyone's post and just posting.

Úlfr is decapitating the Orc and 2 Thugs. One by One.
Seelah is tying one up as a prisoner.

I was just trying to loot them to make sure IF they wake up they didn't have anything important on them.

Petra and Azote are healing the One Armed Halfing.

The beast wheels on the source of his pain and embarrassment, boots chewing splinters. I thought it was an axe too, but I can see there being some confusion. XD

Was this everything? I think you said something about a shortsword also.

I plan on only taking a Dagger and the Rations. (Rations for everyone use not just mine)
Jun 25, 2025 9:40 pm
Sorry, guys, wife let me drink yesterday. 🤣

Axe, no vardatch.
Change Dagger x5, to short sword x2, Dagger x3.

I did intend for them to have a short sword a piece, I forgot about that. Glad none of those attacks hit. 😬
Jun 25, 2025 9:47 pm
Well that ruins everything (sarcasm). How is Ulfr going to cut off an orc and a thug's head with only an axe...? XD
Jun 25, 2025 9:54 pm
I'd rather not describe the process of hacking into a corpses neck with an axe, I'll just say he's really strong and does it right away.

This game is gonna border on sadism enough as it is. I don't wanna be unnecessarlly gorey to boot, lol.
Jun 25, 2025 10:06 pm
Yep, hey, not trying to be a hypocrite, like I said, it's gonna get messy. I deliberately avoided much discussion/description of gore, lol. But the themes still need to be present, the setting is brutal. Gotta convey that.

Bit of a mystery to the party at this point.
So far:
He was present but largely a background figure during the introduction scene.
He was shown to be a traitor to the rebels by signalling to the guys above.
He's doing it for someone named Elise.
He, Wexley and Serah know each other.

Annnd that's about it.

Talking offline with a player, a change I intended to make but didn't make it in Adventuring in Midnight, Greater Spellcasting, the last line should read:
Spells from these greater schools cost spell energy as if they were one level higher.
Jun 26, 2025 3:57 am
@everyone: The only 'loot' that interested me for Petra was some of the rations, and ONE of the 5 daggers because I don't own one and I'm smol enough I could get swallowed up.

See, I had not known that we would be traveling by river, and I did not plan accordingly. (My food spell requires being able to wait an hour in an area with solid earth. That said, maybe the GM will let me go fishing, or trade something for meals of eels?)

@HeroOfSometimes: Thanks for the note about Greater Schools, I was struggling a little with what distinguished them other than needing to be taken at higher caster levels, and only taken once you already had the 'Lesser' versions.

Oh as far as loot goes, Úlfr wants the orc weapon and nothing else, although he would keep the shortsword unless it would help someone else. It's nice to have options, but its also nbd. He is proud of his orc smiling toss though, and sees the orc’s weapon as a trophy.
Jun 26, 2025 9:56 am
WanderOne says:
Azote takes nothing but coin. She has no need of armor or weapons. Having goodberry and lots of spell points says she doesn't need rations. Yeah, Azote has two lesser schools that she can someday I guess expand to greater schools.
Clarification question: That is hyperbole right? You are trackin there's no coin? Not trying insult, just wanna make sure we're not setting false expectations. There's a reason I didn't put any gp, sp, or cp in there...
Jun 26, 2025 10:50 am
Post is up, ready to move to the next scene, we can linger here for a bit without penalty, if you want your characters to debate more.

Drawing close to the end of Chapter One. These first few Chapters will be shorter than those planned for the main campaign. So, if you have concerns about the length, keep in mind this first part is intended to be shorter as this was planned as a 'proof of concept'. So far, I feel as though things have been going pretty well, a few hiccups here and there but mostly solid. If you think they're too long... weeeellll I don't know what to tell you.

If there's strong desire, we can discuss lengthening Act II to mirror the main campaign length more closely, but would like to know if the desire is there and if everyone is planning on sticking around, but we have time before that decision needs to be made.

A PSA from private messages I feel everyone should be aware of:
During the 'one-shot' section of this campaign I'm considering the characters to be largely in flux, if you'd like to change things up, feel free. I only ask that you keep me posted of said changes.

Reason being: Again, we're adapting an old, obscure setting to a relatively new set of rules and making a lot of windage calls; I want to give everyone the opportunity to tweak their character to what they want it to be and incorporate lessons learned. Not to mention we're still ironing out all the conversions and house rule changes.

As always, hit me up with questions or concerns, will continue do my best to keep pace with the story. Hope you're enjoying it so far.

I am not considering Bran a Prisoner. They can do what they want.
Varin closed the door of the cellar on them and it leaving.
WhiteDwarf says:

They are alive; I don't want to just kill them. I want to see if they have any useful information.
If they don't, we will throw them off the barge.
Jun 26, 2025 7:49 pm
We are definitely leaving Bran alone before he becomes violent.

Petra is 3.5 feet tall, she has Str 10, she could drag the prisoner maybe, improvise a table cloth or curtain to make a stretcher...? But probably not, slows us down too much and looks sus?

@Greemology/@WhiteDwarf: But the idea of propping him between two people as a "drunk friend" (or over one person's shoulder, maybe Ulfr the giant-blooded's or Seelah?) is preferable, can we do that?

Or if somebody (Azote or Jasir most likely) slits his throat, Petra cannot stop them and has (in my last post) completed her goals of offering alternative reasoning and solutions and admitted she cannot stop them or prove their caution is not warranted.

What would we give them to float on?

I see this ending badly (for them), and Seelah’s not an easy sell to change her mind. If y’all want her 18 Str to help escort prisoners, you better be sure we can get the info we want from them (w/o resorting to torture), and keep them (reasonably) safe.

So, not to throw another wrench in the gears here, you are going to a boat, that isn't yours, that the owner has already stated he doesn't care whether the prisoner lives or dies.

Just throwing that out there.
Jun 26, 2025 8:08 pm
Yeah. It just reads like a bad deal, for them, and very little upside for us, in terms of our mission. I just don’t think dealing with prisoners unnecessarily is something Seelah easily gets behind.

I’m willing to hear great people out on it, though. :)

Well Azote acted. It was personal defense if nothing else. She is marked and can't let the guy go nor will she give him a chance to escape.

After decades of fighting. This is another flame burning her soul. It is not a first time for her that she has had to kill in cold blood. Each time hurts that much more. She has more than a century for it to bother her.

She doesn't believe Bran is one to tell the tale, but she is sure the prisoner would. The prisoner's soul is sold.

Well I think Smiley only means interrogation technique?

In the excellent cartoon Batman the Animated Series that was a favorite bloodless questioning technique. Batman did not actually drop the crooks, he just needed to be able to scare them.

I would hope our party would only be scaring them too. (Otherwise I have to pitch in with Greemology that my first choice is not to lean into the grimdark with dark deeds by the party...)

@HeroOfSometimes: What would you think about creating just one more 'discussion thread' for Starfall that is exclusively for Loot?

Lists what we acquired, and who has put in a bid for it, so we can consolidate decisions?

FIGHT LOOT:

Battleaxe (d10, Standard for PF 1E and more like a 'bastard sword' mechanically according to GM) : Greemology/Ulfr requested it

Breastplate: WhiteDwarf/Seelah requested it

Dagger x5: Me/Petra requested 1

Bloodstained leather armor x2: Nobody yet?

6 days rations: Smiley/Varin requested to keep them all, Me/Petra has requested 1 of them

VARIN'S SEARCH OF TAVERN LOOT:

• 3 jars salt pork (6 days rations) : Nobody yet?

• 1 pint lamp-oil (sealed flask) : Nobody yet?

• 1 bottle bitterroot wine (Treat as Alchemist's Fire or Strong Alcohol (DC 15)) : Nobody yet?

• Small packet glimmermoss spores (Profession: Herablist Check required to determine use) : Me/Petra asked for it ; WanderOne/Azote may voice interest later

Actually the GM corrected that it was simply a PF 1e Battleaxe.

Question for the GM: weren't there two shortswords since they slashed at us with shortswords?

Glittermoss: Dry and Crush. Afterwards, introducing the moss to open flame causes it to burn immediately. It leaves behind a pungent charcoal like substance; the smoke from this substance stings like pepper; creatures in the 5-ft cloud begin to experience severe eye irritation as well as sneezing and coughing profusely (DC 12 Con save), gaining the dazed condition, with the exception they can still take movement actions. Any character moving out of the cloud can act normally at the start of their next turn. The cloud persists for 1d4 rounds.

The area is tightly controlled by the Izrador's army. Many types of patrols move through the area. The land has long been corrupted by Izrador's dark influence, corrupted animals, fell, evil spirits, and all manner of dark creations roam the land.
There is no such thing as a 'friendly settlement' in the occupied lands. At best, what you will find is a small settlement indifferent of your presence.

I did specify I was NOT casting create water YET, I only named the spell in an attempt to avoid confusion. =/

I said in the text I wanted to wait till we were far away from the Netherwhistle and the river, because enemy patrols along the river were mentioned in a 'common knowledge' way.

However, I could fill the jars later, yes. =)

And honestly I think fresh water is important to PCs' health so perhaps worth a little risk later, instead of drinking potentially brackish and tainted natural water...

Sweet.

Jun 29, 2025 3:41 pm
I explained in character, but the primary concern with by passing them is they will hunt you guys down later, and by you guys I mean Wexley's Barge.
Jun 29, 2025 4:38 pm
So! Summing up what's going on.

Three options before us:

1) Let Wexley talk to the patrol and bribe them (Ensures they don't follow)
2) Fight/kill the orc patrol. [Possible eel involvement] (Signed off on by Wexley)
3) Try and slip past orcs. (Likely sees the orcs pursue us later because we "snubbed them")
Jun 29, 2025 5:00 pm
4) we sneak pass but fail and orc's attack.(I am hoping for this one truthfully)
Jun 29, 2025 5:05 pm
The residential fighter’s player votes Option 2.
Jun 29, 2025 5:06 pm
To be clear, so long as y'all remain hidden, the only ones the orcs would be pursuing is Wexley and Thaelin. They don't know you exist (yet).

Edit: Also, sneaking... Not really an option for the barge. You guys can very likely remain hidden. But there's no getting by them on the river without them seeing the barge.

The orcs will almost certainly take this to a fight if engaged. If they survive and report the barge, it'll be just as bad later. If however they are found with a billion eel bites... or not found much at all, I think we could get away with it... that said, magic needs to be super sparing. Like are those mirror things around?

There is also a huge part of me that wants to start this fight by hitting an orc with a jar of salt pork so he gets devoured... just sayin.

@everyone: I am sorry my last few posts in-game have not 'advanced' the action or roleplay or planning in any significant way other than signing off--through silent communication--on whatever was last said.

My only goal OOC or IC has been trying to make sure nobody is waiting on my response to build a consensus, because out of game I am more preoccupied than usual including some travel.

Oh, okay. I can post my 'second round' now too, like Greemology.

Problem is, I had not considered that the orc with the horn is in melee (with a barbed eel)? So I did not add in the -4 to attack roll last time and I'm not sure whether to do so, this time. I can add a little note about that just in case.

The Orc with the horn isn't in melee, others specified closest or did not specify. Which I chose to target any they would hit, which they didn't. All orcs have armor, so their flat footed AC isn't very low, 15-16. All eels are in combat, so the -4 would apply.

I should've put it out I suppose, I didn't because I didn't want to cause confusion. You guys are still in the water, this is where you'll be when you touch ground. However, barring any deaths on their side, that is where they'll be. The Orc with the horn is T1.

Gonna say no, I liked the idea of the ambush so I let it happen. But technically your 6 rations should've been expended prior to the ambush.

I rolled on it because if you had taken out the orc with pork, that would've been hilarious.

Jun 30, 2025 8:30 pm
@GM: When I count on this mat, the NPCs are much farther away than I had understood from reading the text.

Azote is 115 feet away from Orc T1 with the horn if every square is 5 feet, and thus Petra is more like 130 feet away, no chance and she would not waste a shot at such a target.

I should really only shoot at something within 50 (or at most 60 for -2) feet of me, or else my attack is so low that only a Critical will hit. :/

On the mat as pictured, Petra would take -4 (for 2 ranged penalties) to shoot at Orc R3 and he is her only 'viable' target.

Alternately I could Ready to attack when something gets closer, is that just better?

Currently you're about 25ft away, still in the water. This is the maps of where you'll be when you hit ground. I wasn't gonna update the map each turn until you guys hit the bank.
Jun 30, 2025 8:38 pm
Got it. Would like to prioritize horn orc if he's within 50 feet. Shall we call him Horatiorc Hornblower...?

[ +- ] MAP Question!
I should've put it out I suppose, I didn't because I didn't want to cause confusion. You guys are still in the water, this is where you'll be when you touch ground. However, barring any deaths on their side, that is where they'll be. The Orc with the horn is T1.
I am all the way at the end of the boat.
I think the only best course of action would just be running towards the other boat. In the 2 "Suprise Round" turns, can I spend them running and then jumping to the orc's boat? Or something simuliar?

@Smiley Yes. You land on the deck next to the orc with the horn in time to see him get throat knifed. You see another orc lying there, his leg is bandaged. You have one turn as that ate up one of your turns for two movement actions.

Or you can do something else. But that's an option now.

Rolls

Varin: Acrobatics (Dex) - (1d20+9)

(18) + 9 = 27

Jul 1, 2025 2:11 pm
Ooof, 21 didn't hit an armored orc and it's not clear to me a ranged or melee penalty had anything to do with it...

That said, I am trying to work out a plan via PM with the GM that might allow me to Aid Another in melee at some point. When AC is high, you can use tactics to (effectively) lower it.

Aid Another
In melee combat, if you’re in position to make a melee attack on an opponent that is engaging a friend in melee combat, you can attempt to aid your friend as a standard action.

You make an attack roll against AC 10. If you succeed, your friend gains either a +2 bonus on his next attack roll against that opponent or a +2 bonus to AC against that opponent’s next attack (your choice), as long as that attack comes before the beginning of your next turn. Multiple characters can aid the same friend, and similar bonuses stack.

Rolls

Petra Pestlegrind: Acrobatics (Dex) - (1d20+2)

(18) + 2 = 20

Petra Pestlegrind: Reflex (+2 if vs spells or poison) - (1d20+3)

(20) + 3 = 23

Fall Damage - (1d6, 8d6)

1d6 : (4) = 4

8d6 : (44541463) = 31

Jul 1, 2025 2:15 pm
He didn't hit because of range penalties.

AC for mooks = 16
AC for Elite = 18

Researching your proposal.

You also said 'you could try again' but I think in this context we need to stick with the rolls you made and move on...

The total fall damage was 45, you took 11. Originally it would've been half, but you(Petra) rolled the nat 20. So I dropped it to 1/4.

@everyone: If Petra dies, I am OOC declaring my "DNR" right here and now. Does anyone else have a preference on 'revive or not revive' for their PC?

A couple things that have come up in the private threads for PSA:

Skill prerequisites:
Any midnight specific feats, prestige classes, anything at all, that references a skill prerequisite, that prerequisite should be treated as 3 lower than the actual number in the source material due to the skill conversation from 3.5 to Pathfinder 1E.

Conversation confusion:
A player wanted a feat, but did not know how to apply the Pathfinder Feat to the version of their ability from Midnight. The ability in question was changed dramatically from 3.5 to Pathfinder 1E. When dealing with the Pathfinder 1E version, the meaning was clear.

When dealing with base 3.5 materials ensure you're checking the Pathfinder 1E version for changes.
That's all for now, getting a lot more free time coming up this next week, so I'll probably make a lot of updates to the player materials as a number of flaws have been pointed out to me lately and I want to provide you the most accurate information I can.

So silly observation... that i think about constantly in Pathfinder. You dont have to drop a bow to draw a one handed weapon. You can hold a bow one handed. In fact to fire it you hold it with one hand, and the arrow in the other. You could technically hold a bow in the left hand and swing a one handed weapon in the right. You just couldn't also fire the bow. If the rules say otherwise, they are officially silly and wrong, because I could demonstrate this quite easily.

Yea, makes sense to me. Some feats even mention having a hand free. However, you wouldn't be about to get Str + 1/2 Str.

One-Handed: A one-handed weapon can be used in either the primary hand or the off hand. Add the wielder’s Strength bonus to damage rolls for melee attacks with a one-handed weapon if it’s used in the primary hand, or 1/2 his Strength bonus if it’s used in the off hand. If a one-handed weapon is wielded with two hands during melee combat, add 1-1/2 times the character’s Strength bonus to damage rolls.

There's different factors that come into play. Populated areas are generally more dangerous because there's more legates. Where there's more Legates, there's more Astiraxes. This place certainly isn't the best, but outside of a patrol or Watch Tower, there's not a very high chance there's gonna be an Astirax to sniff you out.
Jul 4, 2025 1:23 am
Good reminders! And good to know about the towers.

Back in town I had thought maybe if we went down to the basement and closed the hatch we could decrease the risk of detection?

Petra is willing to check for traps/poison residue on iron bound chest and then try to open it.

I rolled 15 on Perception but specified I'd like someone else to use their Perception too BEFORE I rolled.

Also rolled Disable Device 20 to open chest, probably not enough and am happy to let anyone else with ranks try it. Only PC I have been told has ranks in that was Azote, if I recall right.

We talked about danger of magic as in lingering effects. I can only assume that the seeker have very good senses past what a detect magic can do. So, casting a magic missile or cantrip is equally dangerous per lingering effects as it rates as faint linger.

Looking to the aura strength that lingers after any spell is casted it based on the caster level or the spell level and the greater of the two is used. All spells from 0 to 3 are rated the same and all caster from level 1 to 5 are rated the same as they produce faint magic.

So, by the rules of lingering magic, there is no difference between any of our party casting cantrips or higher-level spells. They linger the same.

3.5e pointed this out well with their defining of magic. Later edition doesn't take the time to point it out clearly.

Aura Strength: An aura’s power depends on a spell’s functioning spell level or an item’s caster level. If an aura falls into more than one category, detect magic indicates the stronger of the two.

Spell or Object: Faint, Moderate, Strong, Overwhelming
Functioning spell (spell level): 3rd or lower, 4th-6th, 7th-9th,10th+ (deity-level)
Magic item (caster level): 5th or lower, 6th-11th, 12th-20th, 21st+ (artifact)

Original Strength: Duration
Faint 1d6 minutes
Moderate 1d6 X 10 minutes
Strong 1d6 hours
Overwhelming 1d6 days

[ +- ] Know Direction (Spell)
Jul 5, 2025 1:10 am
Magic in Midnight is fundamentally treated differently than the base 3.5 or in our case Pathfinder. Astirax only detect the spell as it's being cast. Essentially they feel the emanation from a channeled spell, not the aura. The more spells are cast in a close proximity to each other, the stronger the spell level, the level of the Astirax all effect how far the magic can be detected.

Think of it as an built in alarm in their heads. You cast a spell, the alarm goes off. If it's a lot of spells, a big spell, or they've upgraded the range of their alarm, it's louder. But the alarm doesn't continue after the spell has been cast, they can't physically sniff out the spell. But they can tell which direction it came from. From that point on there's an Astirax and possibly a legate trying to find that naughty spell caster...
Jul 5, 2025 1:11 am
Spells from innate magic cannot be tracked. I believe that comes from your innate magic feat, if so, it's safe.
Jul 5, 2025 1:21 am
So, Naturefriend spells are safe too as they are like innate. Only my level 0 & level 1 channeler spells can be detected as faint. Glad you made that distinction.

So Astiraxes detect at a number of miles based upon the spell level of the spell. Also the table at the end currently looks like:

Original Strength Duration of Lingering Aura
Faint 1d6 rounds
Moderate 1d6 minutes
Strong 1d6x10 minutes
Overwhelming 1d6 days

Citation : Detect Magic

So. Basically Jasir is correct on both fronts.

Looking at your character sheet, yes.

Unless it comes from an feat like innate magic or a heroic path, it's a channeled spell. As a general rule.

Generally anything you get only from Magecraft/The Channeler class falls under channeled magic, yes.

I get some of my healing spells (x2 per day cure light wounds) from my Heroic Path, so that is not Channeled.

But my strongest (cure moderate) is Channeled, and so is my 'backup' of cure light that I took for Channeler in addition to what I get from the path.

Roger that.

I went ahead and (because I belatedly remembered it) added in to my 'night post' about casting a cantrip (create water to fill the jars that formerly held salted pork. The water must be drank in 24 hours or it vanishes.

Petra will keep one of the jars because she has no waterskin of her own, and a waterproof container with a lid is very handy.

Copy, you were in a remote enough location you don't need to worry about detection of cantrips.

But as a side note, just so everyone is tracking: The water of the Ishensa isn't actually black. It's referred to as the black river because it's essentially the 'lifeblood' of Izrador's army. It's the most fertile area of the north, which is the home land of the orcs. Which were the first race to 'fall' to his influence. It does smell ashen due to his influence, but the water is entirely potable.
Jul 6, 2025 1:48 pm
Also, I posed this question to the OOC chat of a game I'm playing in. It's a closed game, so I know you're not aware of what goes on in it. But I'm genuinely curious how other people's processes work and if you experience the same thing.
From PF1: Skull & Shackles says:
Anyone else get this phenomenon? When making a character, you have an idea in your head for how they act, who they are, they're mannerisms, etc... And subconsciously, there's an inspiration. You're not really sure of the inspiration, but you know it's coming from somewhere. Obviously, it's not a 1 to 1 comparison, there's the filter of your mind, your character has their own motivations, but the nugget of their personality 'lives' in your character somewhere near it's core. Then randomly, it sort of dawns on you who you're basing the character off of?

Ladies and gentlemen, who I inadvertently based Chaps off of:

What is the area around the evil ice burg like,
The image looks like a grassy field.

Varin suggestion will be influenced by it.

Idea is to bait and kite the thing.
Attack it enough to get its attention so it moves away from the water so the barge can get through.
Jul 6, 2025 10:18 pm
It's nestled against the edge of the river, mostly submerged. You could reach it from the shore. The part that's in the river is surrounded by a thin layer of frozen water.

BEST ARTWORK EVER!!!

My idea.
Barge = Brown Arrow.
River = Blue
Evil Ice Berg = Red Hexa
A handful of us (Green Line) moves away from the barge to draw the Iceberg to use.
Once the Barge passes we meet back following the Pink Line!

Sounds like you put way more thought into your characters than I do mine 😅

I have a general idea for what I want to play then I think of a fun spin on the the idea, e.g. Tax Collector Paladins of Abadar. Then I try to imagine who might inhabit that role, typically that personality takes form in the guise of something I've already seen before.
[ +- ] All art is iterative afterall.
The example above, the billy butcher character, is actually a Sacred Fist Warpriest of Besmara, playing him like a Pirate Ship 'Chaplain' of sorts.

It's quite excellent actually, a much better outcome than I expected, haha.

@Hero: Besmara is a cool pirate goddess and Skulls and Shackles is a fun module.

@Smiley: great map and 'drawing off' plan!

Those of you that are alchemist should roll to see if the evil ice berg has any useful properties.

Could we shrink it down to have infinite water in a jar?

If I’m tracking correctly, I think we can basically move into the M column, and remain outside its Aura.
Seelah to M7. I’ll eat some range increments, but might be for the best.
Jul 7, 2025 12:54 pm
The block wasn't 100% centered, I fixed it (saving the icon for the reveal), the aura extends 20ft out. You'd be safer in N or O.

Cool, thank you. N7 for Seelah then,, please and thanks. :)

@WanderOne, the description you posted is the 5e version. The PF version of Faerie Fire doesn’t have any direct combat related effects, it just mitigates concealment, stealth and other effects. You might double check me on that.

I’d offer Seelah’s shoulders to you, but Petra’s weight would slow any of us to a 20’ move. If we’re also armored, that is.

Right Úlfr can't go over 133lbs right now without exceeding his light encumbrance weight limit. If he wears only his armor that brings it down to 93 lbs.

@Mica_pun_worthy how much does she weigh? Like... probably doable, but not sure if the weird penalties would be worth it right now. If she weighs 60 lbs or less it is still feasible.

Edit: Just checked the height/weight chart. If you rolled absolutely maximum for weight, she would be 53 lbs. + whatever gear can't stay on the barge. Probably easily carriable.

Doesn't much matter where Jasir starts. Probably going to recommend that people start out a little further away so as to not interfere with the baiting process. Jasir has 45' base movement. He'll probably have to "act slow" as it is.

Petra no longer needs a 'ride' because she will be on the boat. Thanks, though.

I didn't use a chart for my Dwarrow's weight, I guessed. (Even though I did use it for height/age.)

As in, use it in a sling? My initial reaction is to say no, but after browsing some forums, instead I'll allow it with the following concerns/caveats:

Using it in a sling means you can't move if you want to reload and attack.

I will impose a -4 improvised weapon penalty on attacks. Reason being, these lines from the Sling Weapon itself:
[ +- ] Sling
Rationale: If rocks are so dissimilar from sling bullets, alchemists flasks, especially home made ones, are in a different category altogether.

That being said, calling back to an older conversation, my research led me to these:

Thaaat looks to be situation. Been thinking about it, once you're out of fire, I'm not sure how this plays out. You could plink at it, but getting close is a bad idea. And Entangled lasts for 3 minutes, 18 rounds.
Jul 8, 2025 2:36 pm
Can Azote just drop the spell?
Jul 8, 2025 2:51 pm
That she can... I considered just intuiting it, it seems as though he missed the delima, but I didn't want to remove player agency and now we're already into the round... so I'm at a bit of a impasse...
Jul 8, 2025 4:03 pm
I was mostly not sure where to move because I wasn't sure if I could move Azote freely or not.
Jul 8, 2025 4:16 pm
Probably not, would require a CMB roll. I decided once Seelah acts, I'll end the spell myself in the roll up for the round, since all my actions are conveniently located at the end.

We were hoping Azote would use a Standard action dismiss the entangle plants with its wide radius, not just to avoid trapping the ice elemental so it doesn't follow the "bait" of the party running away...

But ALSO to avoid making movement through the river difficult for Wexley Thorn's barge. ;)

I mean having it fall down in grease is good for either strategy. It makes it really easy for us to run away. And since grease wouldn't even work in water (because it conjures literal mundane grease) it would by necessity be on the ground between it and us.

Grease doesn't function in water. Because grease literally floats. My thinking is, she either cast it ineffectually, into the water, or she placed it on the ground between it and us.

Edit: Just checking Paizo forums, yeah, since it must target solid ground or an object, it means that if the ground is water it may just form on the surface of the water and is mostly ineffectual, or it doesn't conjure correctly at all because line of sight is disrupted to the bottom of the water.

Is the barge still waiting for one of Azote's Standard actions to be used to dismiss the plant spell so it can pass through the narrow channel?

EDIT: My bad, I had missed this line in a GM post which caused Azote to use her Standard action to dismiss the reeds completely, A heartbeat later the channeler grimaces, snaps a word of dismissal, and the green lattice sinks back into the wet earth.

I thought we used the pork, saved the jars for water, then Petra filled the jars with water, then Petra realized the jars were needed for molotov cocktails/alchemist fire and dried them out and poured the water in various waterskins and allowed the jars to be used for weapons against the elemental.

Did I miss something?

Need to find some writing for Jasir to start decoding so I have a place to toss these extra language points.
Or Jasir studies a written language with a teammate who already knows it, I believe the Midnight campaign book GM shared mentions that as the most common option.

Ulfr can read Norther. Petra can read Clan Dwarven. Seelah cannot read last I saw her sheet. I assume Jasir reads Erenlander already but if not that's known by a party member.

I can't seem to open and read any other player's sheet at the moment to check what if anything they can read (Azote, Varin).

Yes to the tower slumber party plan. Varin is checking it for dangers, Jasir is about to do similar according to both their latest posts.

Azote doesn't read.
Jul 14, 2025 8:33 pm
Varin doesn't read either.
Words are hard and give me a headache.

Of course, with leveling, illiteracy could be solved. Still awaiting the GM to reply on possible Druid for the future on Azote. Didn't hear from Tork about flying if that was fine or not.

Jasir actually writes in Courtier.

With hitting 4th level Jasir's gaining an extra language point for free and an additional rank or two in linguistics.

@Greemology - Would Ulfr be adverse to teaching Jasir Norther?

As for what Jasir speaks:
Fluent in - Erenlander, Colonial, Courtier [Literate], High Elven, and Norther
Conversational - Trader's Tongue
Basic - Blacktongue, Sundered tongues

And there's probably some synergies in there. Happy to start absorbing more languages. XD

A niche opposite the breach shelters a heavy oaken desk cracked down the center. A once‑fine cloak, now stiff with mildew, hangs from a peg; beneath it, ink‑stained parchment curls upon itself, the writing long bled into illegible tracks. A dented brass lantern still swings from its chain above.

Six narrow bed‑frames remain bolted to the curve of the inner wall. Straw ticking has rotted to black mulch; iron foot‑chests stand ajar, stripped of anything more valuable than moth‑eaten linen.
Is this area free of snow, wind, and cold? A better place we could sleep at night then below?

Darn.
I am assuming there is not an easy to clover the wall. Even with the Desk.

That's correct, very big hole.

Only one door, no windows on the bottom floor. Small windows on the second floor though.

Wanted to make sure everyone was aware, there was a change to the last post, I realized I wrapped too much of cough something in private tags.

Is everybody finished with leveling up to 4th? I finished mine this morning and let GM know via the subforum.
Jul 16, 2025 3:49 am
Mine should be all done.

How many background skill points do we get?
Do we get any points for reading/language when we level?
Jul 16, 2025 7:25 am
Mine's been done all day.

And to answer the background skills question: We get 2 background skills that get a point every level (But it has to be the same two skills). And we only get more language stuff by gaining ranks in linguistics (which isn't capped by level like normal, and is both one of my background skills and something I've invested in. XD)

Where is this same two skills thing coming from? Did I write that somewhere?

Waiting on Varin's night action, then I'll need an order for the watch.
HeroOfSometimes sent a note to WhiteDwarf
Edit: Oh, also, updated AiM again. Not much content wise. A few more pictures is about it.
Jul 16, 2025 1:28 pm
Background skills - We get 2 extra skill points per level, must be spent on background skills. Doesn’t say that they need be same skills every time.
Hope that’s helpful. :)
Jul 16, 2025 4:20 pm
Thanx. I corrected elven Azote as she had for some very odd reason no sweet background skill points added and now she has 8 background points added.

Also found an error in the skills calculations. It didn't account for odd value stats, but it does now.

Trying to get caught up and post.
I keep getting 504 timed out

Was relatively sure I'd seen it somewhere where the idea of background points was first being discussed, but I'm not finding it now. Content to be mistaken, though! Even more flexibility is not something I'm going to complain about.

Only phrased like that because that came up before and for the life of me; I've never encountered it before.

@EVERYONE/GM: Are we waiting for everyone to declare which watch shift they want, or can we not set watches till all PCs are leveled up and some details are still being worked out?

Or are all PCs finished leveling but we are still unsure if 'everyone taking a turn' will properly complete the rite?

Smiley/Varin asked for first watch shift

I/Petra volunteered for second, but is flexible.

Continuing number Azote and Tork for third watch.
Jul 17, 2025 5:09 pm
If anyone hasn't rogered up differently, I'll be going with this order:
Seelah performing the ritual
Varin
Petra
Azote
Ulfr
Jasir
Seelah finishing the watch.

That was my plan anyhow. There IS a reason the watch order is important.

Question for GM:
Do the Paths of Power replace normal ability score progression, every fourth hit die, in Pathfinder?
Jul 17, 2025 6:55 pm
What exactly are you referring to?
Jul 17, 2025 7:52 pm
HeroOfSometimes says:
What exactly are you referring to?
When you get a discretionary +1 to an ability score at 4th level. Is that in addition to the inherent bonuses from Paths of Power, or do the Paths of Power bonuses replace those?
Jul 17, 2025 8:15 pm
Sounds super familiar. But I'm drawing a blank. Which book?
Jul 17, 2025 9:06 pm
Pathfinder Core. This is the FAQ from the Paizo Forums explaining it:
Quote:
According to Table: Character Advancement and Level-Dependent Bonuses, a character gains an ability score increase at level 4, 8, 12, 16, and 20. How much is this increase? What ability scores does it affect?

At 4th level, a character can increase one ability score by +1. This is a typeless, nonmagical bonus that cannot be changed once selected.

For example, a fighter with Dex 13 could use this bonus to increase his Dex to 14.

A character can also increase one ability score at 8th, 12th, 16th, and 20th level; it does not have to be the same ability score as the one chosen at an earlier level, and stacks with all other bonuses.

For example, the aforementioned fighter could use the 8th-level bonus to increase his Strength from 15 to 16, then use his 12th-level bonus to increase his Dex from 14 to 15, and so on.

Jul 17, 2025 9:41 pm
I saw it in a book yesterday that I was converting. I googled it. I can't find a Pathfinder reference for it, outside of a 3rd party resource I've never heard of. There was a little system in 3.5 called paths of power that came out in one of their monthly publications, but I'm not familiar with that either. Sooo... I don't know what you're referring to when you say "Paths of Power."

...the Paths of Power in Midnight...

Like Ùlfr is Giantkin or whatever. Gets +1s to str eventually. The thing i was referencing was from Pathfinder Core.

With the cold weather being here, Azote ponders the thoughts of what she can trade to obtain nice winter gear next time such is offered. Her 10gp of treated Leather might be enough.

Very cool scene, and sword!
Jul 18, 2025 12:26 pm
Thanks, I was hoping this one would turn out well. You guys circumvented the horror part of the encounter with solid skill check results.

Will be progressing the scene this afternoon.

PSA from private threads:
Be prepared to start leveling pretty quickly. For example, this scene was supposed to include an encounter with, essentially a haunt, due to SOME members of the party essentially being a skill monkey, it went much faster than anticipated.

I generally try to play things by the book, I'll make a windage call if something isn't working or something doesn't make sense, but I'm not gonna try to shoe horn in extra content to pad out the run time. So, the end result of that is sometimes the time between levels isn't going to feel very naturally spaced.

Couple that with the fact that I effed up the math from start to end, we're gonna be playing a bit of catch up.

I can allow more time for PCs to interact with each other in situations like this, but without an active NPC in the scene I can't do much except add scene detall or narrative details.

I don't have much experiencing GMing, as we move to different types of scenes and encounters, I may not handle things exactly perfectly.

Just a heads up for things moving forward, expect to level quickly, expect some jank on my end as im learning. But, I will do my best to deliver what I consider quality content.

If anyone has an issue with any of the above, I'm open to ideas.

Thanks for your participation, feedback and patience.

Hope you're all still enjoying it.

This is a great game, great players, great GM, very engaging. I’ll never complain about a fast leveling game, esp in PbP.

Enjoying our game very much! :)

Really my next post will be, "Úlfr goes back to the relative safety of the tower. Makes a fire. Hunts small game for several days. Makes fur clothes for several days, then finally sets off..." because there is no way he'd brave a storm like that without appropriate clothing.

(And that's coming from the dude with a really good bonus to those saves.)

(Curiosity)
Varin has improved Healing.
[ +- ] Improved Healing (2HP/hr)
If he takes 1-2 points of cold damage during the walk, would he just heal it back.
If he take 6 points at once it would be healed by the end of the walk.

I am going to roll but I want to double check.

8 rolls. DC 15+1 per Each hour.
So DC is
Hour DC
1 15
2 16
3 17
4 18
5 19
6 20
7 21
8 22

Going to roll all of mine in order. Than figure out dmg afterwards

He also literally has the skills to fix the issue. VPs kinda made it hard plan though. But i guess if the tower collapses, you won't have to worry about Úlfr falling behind. No more Úlfr.

I suppose you could, would just make this entire chapter pretty boring, but I mean it would be in line with defanging the encounters, as you guys seem to be pretty good at. And it's still gonna be cold, just not windy. The cold will still be there.
+ Your not on an exact timeline, but you are supposed to meet someone at the giants teeth.
Jul 18, 2025 10:33 pm
Ah... if we have a timeline to meet that changes things. I just saw your line about "last chance to protect yourselves" and was thinking how long it takes to make fur coats lol
Jul 18, 2025 10:35 pm
Could we trade at that last town or something, I missed?
Jul 18, 2025 10:38 pm

No, I suppose I should've put more emphasis on it. But Wexley actually said in the very first post that the journey would be very cold. If you have the vp for Cold Weather gear, we can pretend you got that in the beginning. I was never making it a secret the elements would be an obstacle.
Jul 18, 2025 10:41 pm
We'll wait for damage. Assuming there will be survival checks for people to aid the party.

Edit: Also, do keep in mind. It's a total of ten hours. Maybe 12 if you really milk it, it's non-lethal damage. You're not gonna die... from the cold.
Jul 18, 2025 10:46 pm
Too bad we can't buy a Heatstone... I still have 18vp...
[ +- ] Heatstone
Cold weather clothes is only 8vp. Was there a time after we met, Wexley, when we would have been able to buy stuff?
It seemed like we met him and then just rushed to the barge right away.
Jul 18, 2025 10:49 pm
So could have Azote trade some of her trade leathers (10 gp) for cold weather (8 gp) gear early after we met with Wexley instead of trying to weather it with bedroll wrap. LOL.

That is true... I suppose I didn't factor that in... like I said, we can retcon the starting gear a bit. Gonna say no heatstone though. That'd be wildy expensive in Midnight. One vp is roughly equal to seven gp. That'd be approximately 140vp.

I just don't think I can make the VPs work lol. I had just enough for armor as a didn't roll poorly, but also didn't roll great.

Woot. New copy in and it is close to complete. Back in business. Fades back in & keeps the smile.

Rolled Survival 23 the first time we were asked, and rolled a 15 as my initial Survival roll right before I rolled saves vs cold (3 fails out of 8 rolls).

Does either Survival roll help give each one of the other 5 party members a +2 on saves? I'd prioritize Varin I guess, kinda worried about him?
