Yacht Shock!

Unhooding the cultists you don't see anyone you recognize. They seem to be upper-class judging by their well-groomed nature, healthy skin, manicured hands and feet, and lack of open sores or missing teeth. Each of them is indeed naked below their robes, dangly bits hanging free.

Below decks you reach an opulent tropical-themed dance floor where all the angles are wrong. Band posters shift when out of view, a disco ball reflects unrecognizable colors, and an old-timey record player spins a warped record that blares classic rock (backwards, of course) making your head swim even more. Another cry for help comes from behind a closed door on the far side of the dance floor.
OOC:
Everyone will need to make a Crafty 6 roll to reach the other side.

Cassie kneels down to examine some of the powder scattered across a bolted down table.

"Looks like they were getting high sniffing 'Dagon's dandruff'. My guess is some Hollywood types picked the wrong bay to party. I can call it in and check the dock records to see who owns the boat."

But she realizes she is trying to get off this yacht ASAP and instead steels her nerves. "After we rescue any other survivors of course." She grabs a discarded stiletto to use for self defense.
Down below decks, Cassie tries to focus on the visuals she knows are real to fight against the unsettling music and disorienting visuals. That was a real band on that poster wasn't it? And did she recognize that tune? If only it was playing correctly...
OOC:
Going to burn a luck to reduce difficulty to 5.

Fist-bumping and then chest-bumping Zara when the other woman makes her comment, Jak fetches a gaff from the boat and proceeds below, following behind Booby and his little speedo. When she gets downstairs and the lights are going… and the warbly music’s playing…

"Rock out with your cock out, yeah! Theme for our next staff party?"

He wants to use the fire extinguisher to try and bash open the door by knocking the handle off and if that fails as a battering ram. "Stand back," he starts, but sees Jak take a more cerebral attempt at the door.

"Seriously, Bobby?

Christ, men! Then she looks at Jaklyn. And women!

Down below, on hearing the music, she shouts, "Backwards music! The stuff of demons!"

Andreva grew up with a crazy grandma, except she wasn't so crazy. She knew things. Andreva knew things too; it was in her blood. Disoriented as she was, at least the music didn't contribute to that overall vertiginous feeling that the others were probably feeling.

As they went below and entered the dance floor, Zara had the feeling that the music didn't sound right. The loud blaring they heard earlier was a funky beat, but the record player ... She instinctively tried to cover her ears, and reached for her pair of swimmer earplugs to stuff them into her earholes.

Jak, Andreva, and Zara steel their nerves or come up with some other method of reducing the effects of this reality-warping dancefloor. They reach the other side without problem.

The same can not be said for Bobby and Cassie. Bobby finds the warbly tune an earworm. There is something about it that makes him want to swing his hips and tap his toes. Why has no one else tried to play music backwards before? Maybe this could be a whole new genre!

Cassie however stops in her tracks as she sees a poster for her favorite band on the wall. Even more unbelievably, the figures in the poster start moving. They wink at Cassie and beckon her over. Then they jump out of the poster, growing to their normal sizes. "How's it going, Cassie? Still keeping in great shape I see. I know you're a huge fan of ours, but we don't want any lame-os supporting us. How about a dance off to see if you are truly the fan we deserve?"
OOC:
Bobby needs to make a Crafty 6 test or lose 1 grit and have the song stuck in his head the rest of the adventure. Cassie needs Crafty 5 to win the dance-off or lose 1 grit from disappointing her favorite band. I leave the details of the song and band up to you!

Zara turned to see if anyone had succumbed to the nefarious backmasking (which reversed must have sounded like ladder to the underworld or some such). "Hey, snap out of it! Earplugs!" Perhaps the warning was too late! But was it too late to also try to destroy that evil turntable?
OOC:
If there's some help that can be offered to Bobby and Cassie, Zara will try it!
Jun 25, 2025 4:36 pm
Bobby knows he should focus but when you have to boogie, (No!) you gotta do what you gotta do. He starts singing lightly, even though the backwards words are gibberish. Mostly gibberish. I can learn these!

"Oh my GOD! It's the Snuggle Monsters! I went to your second and seventh final tours! I would absolutely LOVE to dance!"

Cassie decides to use the rhythmic gymnastics routine that she'd performed for the cruise ship talent show. The routine had already been choreographed to the Snuggle Monsters' hit song Lay Your Head on My Pillows so it would be perfect.

But as she launches into the graceful, frenetic motions, everything seems to slow down. The backward music sounds stretched and deeply resonating through the ship. Her body performs the lithe movements in aching beauty as disco ball reflections swim like lazy fish through the room.
OOC:
Going to activate SLO MO to recover a luck point so would be Crafty 6 roll.

+1 Luck, -1 Grit

OOC:
You can stop the record player to help out those mesmerized. Those who succeeded in making it across find a closed door leading deeper into the yacht.

OOC:
There’s the detail I was looking for.
Dancing a bit herself, putting on a bit of a show, Jaklyn boogie-night’s over to the record player, does her best Travolta, then gently lifts the need back into its cradle. Then she has a thought. (It doesn’t happen often, but it does happen.)

Was the turntable itself running backwards, or is this a record filled with backwards-sounding music? The woman checks the equipment and the record label.
Jun 27, 2025 2:01 pm
Looking at the record, Jak sees it says "sretsnoM elggunS" on the center label. With the record stopped, the music dies as well. Cassie and Bobby snap out of their hallucinations and find themselves in the center of the disco dance floor.
Jun 27, 2025 4:49 pm
Bobby gives one last hip thrust (for completion reasons) and then straightens himself.

Looking around at the others he says, "What's her name did say, The rhythm IS going to get you. Or something like that." He mumbles an apology for being distracted and grabs his fire extinguisher again.
Jun 27, 2025 6:54 pm
Andreva wonders if her head will become stuck in an SMH infinite loop as she throws a shrug at Bobby.

Hes such a twerp.

Her judgmental phase over, she looks to the others. "Are we all okay now? That was a trip, but now it's over, and it's time to get back to business. There was that cry for help on the other side of this floor. Extinguishers and what have you at the ready!" she announces as she heads towards the door.
Jun 27, 2025 7:42 pm
"Ungh. What... " Cassie shakes her head, trying to clear it of the strange music. But with the record off, it echoes to silence and she regains her senses. "Sorry, I just got carried away for a moment. I'm alright now. Let's go rescue that passenger!"
Jun 28, 2025 8:37 am
Opening the door reveals the master bedroom of the yacht. It is a tacky room of 80s design. A giant waterbed sits in the center against the far wall draped in zebra-print sheets and various other animal print throw pillows. Next to the bed are a man in beachwear and a woman in business casual clothes bound in nylon ship's rope. On top of the waterbed is washed up 80s superstar Eric Zahn! He's seen better days (or decades) as his body shows the soft roundness of excess, his long blonde hair is unkempt and mostly hidden under a sea captain's hat, and his handlebar mustache is several decades out of fashion. Zahn grips a large and ancient tome in both hands.

"Fools! You’re too late! Arise, my chthonian crustacean! Arise and obey!"

A giant lobster claw bursts from the waterbed in front of Zahn. A horrifying creature emerges, armored and highly annoyed. Water from the bed pours off its body as it extricates its large pincers and pointy legs the size of spears. The Rock Lobster attacks Zahn with one claw, knocking off his captain’s hat as he dodges backward. Then the eye stalks swivel in the direction to the struggling bound victims. It begins to advance!

OOC:
The rock lobster has 10 effort tokens. It is difficulty 5 for any check, but crafty used to distract it reduces the next character's attempt to difficulty 4. There are more creative solutions as well but I'll leave you to figure them out :D
Jun 28, 2025 9:51 pm
Bobby is still got music in his head, and had been trying to get out out but remembering other songs. One comes to him now. "(Ah-ah-ah-ah) Cock lobster!"

Bobby races forward, and sprays Cock Lobster in the creepy swizelstick eyes.

Jak watches as the monster erupts from the water bed, snapping and scuttling and lobstering. An idea strikes her: despite the fire, the boat’s electrical system is still functional — the record player was proof enough of that. So, Fisher darts jigglingly to the side of the bedroom, where a lamp glows. Seizing it, she tries to throw it into the sloshing waterbed water that the monster has loosed!
