It's near sunset in mid-July, making Sunset Hills Beach, California almost as hot as the beach-goers. People begin packing up for the day: returning rented parasols and deck chairs, shaking sandy towels, emptying ice-cold water from coolers onto the sand. The air smells of salt, suntan lotion, hot plastic, and sweat. The day has been eventful, like most every day, but nothing...out of the ordinary. The veterans of Sunset Hills Lifeguards know what most civilians and the rookie lifeguards don't: that off the shores of their perfect beach-side city lies the underwater resting places of various Elder and Outer Gods whose dreams and proximity warp reality and summon forth nightmare horrors. Not to mention the residents of the sunken city of R'lyeh. But luckily nothing like that has reared its head today...yet.

But that still leaves the mundane trifles that lifeguards deal with every day. Which means its time for a...

Zara Ortega treated her stretch of beachfront with all the earnestness of a rookie cop on patrol, as if she were still a rookie cop of the SHPD. She had aced all the tests, both the pen-and-paper ones as well as the physical fitness qualifiers, with flying colours. But for some reason the psych and med evaluations turned up inconclusive, not once, not twice, but three times in a row. We'll put you on the reserve list, they politely told her. In other words, that career path was on hold.

Still, a stint with the Sunset Hills Lifeguards was equally fulfilling to deal with threats mundane and esoteric. Why just this morning she had to break up a bunch of high schoolers who gave class a miss to hang out at the beach, at the favourite hangout spot in front of Eye Scream. It wasn't cutting class that was the issue, it was the fact that they were scrawling arcane sigils in the sand from one of the necronomicon volumes one of them had 'borrowed' from the library. They managed to cover nearly fifty feet of beach with a pattern that would do crop circles proud with eldritch symbols, their idea of a prank, before Zara brought out the sandboni to rake it all away before it could get wet from the seatide. No telling what would've happened if the waves touched it.

The boys, thus defeated, scattered quickly with jeers and catcalls. Perhaps a phone call to the Sunset Hills High School principal was in order.

It began, as too many of Andreva's days did, with her trying to pass as normal while doing her lifeguard job.

The sun was too bright, the noise too loud, and the sand everywhere. She had wandered over to the Eye Scream, jonesing for a triple berry, cherry ripple, chocolate splash cone. The cantankerous ice-cream guy, as always, was already on edge.

"You want what flavor?" he growled, scooping with more aggression than necessary. "I ain't got no 'Chthonic Ripple."

"I said cherry ripple," Andreva replied coolly. She accepted the cone, then promptly dropped it into the sand after a beach ball grazed her elbow. She froze. She stared down at the desecrated scoop. "... It landed in a perfect spiral," she whispered. And it had. The fallen ice cream had hit the sand and spread in an unnatural arc, almost forming a nautilus curve. Her breath caught. She scanned the beach, no signs of intrusion. Not yet. But those boys and their sand art...

Glad Zara cleaned up that mess...

"You gonna pay for that one too, or just stand there like a weirdo?" the man snapped.

Andreva blinked. "Did you feel the vibration when it landed? No? Hm."

Then she nodded, as if confirming something to herself, and stalked off to where she’d buried a waterproof recorder last week to track tidal whisper fluctuations. For a story. Definitely just a story.

Later, she would describe the day as "uneasy, with latent potential," which her editor would replace with "mild, breezy."

Her gills itched beneath her cap. That whole incident was a bad omen. The sea was stirring. She could feel it. And nobody listened.

"You're a fucking weirdo, you think I'm wearing that? No hats!" He crumpled the hat after Siegfried Mannheim turned his back.

He pulled from his back pocket and opened the letter he'd gotten, and plopped the stylized weiner hat farther back on his head. A kid came up to the booth. "Welcome to Hotdog, um..."
Quote:
... accepted your request to transfer your lifeguard certification from Salt Lake City Seaway...
"uh Salty Dog, no relish, extra, um..."

"Hey jerkface I said a Chicago dog with jalapenos! What's your damage?"

"Hey fuck you, fart butt. Siegfried I quit!"

He clapped his hands together. Oh yeah, time to roll it thick in beach boobs. He was sure the stories about the crazy stuff was all California bullshit.
He smeared suntan lotion on fat-woman-in-the-wheelchair's back. She had a name but he couldn't remember, some kind of Italian nonsense. This was the worst job on the beach.

"Okay Mrs. Musserati-"

"Musetti."

"Right, Musetti. I want you to stay out of the sun. You know that all the men by the pier want to see you, but they'll come to you when they're ready. You're worth it. So stay under the umbrella."

Yeah, giggle it up, lard butt, and hope they don't roll you back into the sea.

"You're turning us down?! You're turning the full-ride scholarship down?!"

Jaklyn Fisher, known better to her friends and the general public on the beach as Jak, had nodded at not one Dean of Medicine when they'd said that, but three -- from three different top shelf Med Schools.

"I am. I've made my decision. Nothing can touch Sunset Hills, Dean. I'll be saving lives every day -- every single day. I'll be fighting off sharks. Honing my Heimlich and CPR skills. ATVing on the beach. Jetskiing on the water. Diving, swimming, snokeling, surfing, wave-boarding, water-poloing. Working on my tan. Apprehending old Nazis from their sub when it finally surfaces. Eating fish tacos. All while looking like this... and in a bikini. Yeah, Dean, I've made my choice. Or did I? Sometimes I think Sunset Hills Beach chose me."
It had been a rough day so far.

Andreva had lost her ice cream. Zara had broken up a gang of beach cultists, and Bobby? He was on whale oil duty. Not his finest moment.

Fisher was currently speeding along on her ATV, blasting through the edge of the surf. Standing in the saddle and looking foine, she left deep tracks in the wet sand that lasted until a few waves reshaped them. And that was when she spotted her target. Some little Niedermeyer had made a big-ass sand castle. Multiple turrets and baileys... walkways, huge walls, a moat, a draw bridge and a besieging army.

Giants were striding towards that scene. Giants who had every intention of kicking the shit out of that poor kid's creation. It was Bloompy and Pud, the two unlikeable teenaged boys Jak had had run-ins with before. They were lewd, crass bullies, snapping bikini straps, spitting in people's food, farting in snoozing sunbather's faces, letting the air out of diving tanks, whizzing into picnic baskets while families frolicked in the water.

Jak opened the throttle on her quadrunner as she tried to head the boys off at the pass. She shouted to people in the way, "Watch out, Sunset Hills Beach Patrol! I have a castle to save!"

Cassie thought about her days as a cruise ship doctor often. It had been such a perfect life! Meeting new people from all over the world, always a day away from being able to relax on a beach, good pay. But after the accident everything had changed for the worse and she couldn't step foot onto a gangplank without being crippled with fear.

Her one solace was that she could still be on the beach with hardly any symptoms, even if she couldn't go out on the water or even swim anymore. Thankfully, the Sunset Hills Lifeguards needed doctors and there was enough to do along the beachfront and back at HQ that she stayed busy.
That morning had been busy catching up on paperwork at HQ followed by a spicy chicken salad from Yumwich Burgers for lunch. While finishing her diet cola on the walk back, she had spied the well-built, lantern-jawed Ray Stang combing the beach with his high dollar metal detector. When she went over to chat, he showed her the strange medallion that he'd found washed up on the beach.

She felt bad having to confiscate it, especially once Ray started gushing about how great it would look with his puka shell necklace. But beach policy was clear that all ancient artifacts found were property of the city. She suspected city hall funneled them to the university for god knows what purpose, but she supposed that was better than it falling into the wrong hands.

Leaving the dejected Ray alone with his sad puppy dog eyes, Cassie headed back to HQ to start the paperwork on the medallion. The inventory count of lifeguard medical supplies she originally planned to do would have to wait until tomorrow.

Near the end of the day, near the end of your shift. The orange sun sits on the horizon, turning the sky the colors of bruised sherbet: pinks and oranges in the west with blues and purples in the east. You all sit in the control tower finishing up your last minute tasks. There are accident forms to fill out, gear to wipe down and stow away, and of course the end-of-shift meeting. But before you can finish said tasks, you notice a bright point of orange light a few hundred yards out on the water. the light flickers and dances. Then a cloud of dark black smoke rises. A boat on fire! And from this distance a pretty large one at that. A yacht on fire!
Jun 5, 2025 1:47 am
Fisher had managed to save the castle in the nick of time, but the feeling of accomplishment was fleeting. A boat fire! Right at quitting time!

"You all seeing what I'm seeing?" the lifeguard asks, her blue eyes fixed on the orange spark and the smoke. She's wearing her suit and an orange bomber jacket, looking good as she cocks an eyebrow.

"Looks like one more save before we're all off the clock..."

Jun 5, 2025 2:46 pm
Zara was stowing away the rescue floats in their appointed racks, already dried out from when she spritzed them with water earlier to rinse off the day's grime, when her sixth sense made her cock her head out towards sea. Telltale orange glow! And not from the setting sun on the horizon.

"Ping the coast guard!" They had them on speeddial naturally: the coast guard dealt with maritime situations such as ship accidents and vessel mishaps, but they would always be slower that the lifeguards, whose job focussed on saving lives. In two bounds, her lithe legs carried her to where the rest were; this emergency might need all of them!

Bobby frowns. "Damn, I was going to get ready for a hot date with a ... model, yeah. A redhead, too. Hey, do we get overtime?" He's already stuffing his kit back together, and getting ready to run for the beach.

At Zara's call he grabs the emergency radio, looking at the channel markings. He's used radios but not this one. "Coast guard this is Sunset Hills, um, Lifeguard. Boat on fire, two hundred yards from shore. Repeat boat on fire, big one. We're responding but we don't have a water boat. Over. To put out the fire. Over, really this time." Fuck!

"Grab some fire extinguishers!"
Jun 5, 2025 7:34 pm
Andreeva can't stand Bobby. Fankly she thinks he's full of shit and doesn't believe a word out of his mouth, but she has the good sense to know that working together is the key to a successful result and that included saving lives. Zara, she wished she could be like her, but Jaklyn, whom she refused to call Jak, not so much. I mean, how the hell did she even move with those bazoongas in the way? Really, she looked like she belonged sliding up and down a pole in the questionable stripper bar downtown. Cassie, she liked. More importantly, Andreva was intrigued by the doctor's odd behavior. What had happened to make her fear the water?

Then came the bright orange light. Since she had no social life to speak of, she lived for the excitement of these random events. The icing on the cake was another dramatic story for her editor. She had to eat so ...

Grabbing a fire extinguisher, she followed the others.

As Bobby called in the yacht fire to the Coast Guard, Cassie stood at the control tower window, transfixed by the orange glow and billowing smoke as her mind was pulled back to the cruise ship. And the accident.

It had started with an engine fire too. And it had ended with the ship drifting for days, awash in bodily fluids as the medical center (her medical center) filled with the sick and infirm. Strange how the smell of salt and sand had been a comfort afterwards, even as the ocean itself now filled her with dread.

"I.... um, right. I'll get everything ready to receive any injured that you guys rescue," she stammered. She wished she could remember how many Valium were left in the bottle in her locker. She had a feeling she'd need to refill her prescription after the night was over.

Andreva Steele *wishes* she was built like this
"They're thirty minutes out, at least," Jak says when the topic of calling the coast guard comes up. She knows it's the right thing to do--just as she knows that boat will likely be burned to the waterline by the time the coasties get there.

The woman moves to grab a fire extinguisher at the same time Steele does; the two women almost collide, and Andreva barely manages to avoid face-planting in that magnificent, domineering cleavage. Apologizing with a look before she grabs a cannister, Fisher throws Holland a glance when stammers a bit.

"You're coming, Cassie! We need you out there! Come on!"

Rushing down the stairs in needless slow motion, giving the audience a show, Fisher races for their boat, which she intends to fire up right away!
Jun 6, 2025 11:37 am
The boat is quite impressive. It's a 30-foot speedboat in garish red and yellow with double motors in the back, "SUNSET HILLS LIFEGUARD" is stenciled in black along the sides. The cockpit is in the rear and seats two people, leaving plenty of space in the front for holding survivors. Two large holds lie under the deck that contain most essential gear and first-aid kits. Padded seats, three on a side, also run along the interior bow of the speedboat. Everyone piles in, Jak behind the wheel. She pushes forward the throttle and the boat leaps underneath you, slicing through the waves. Thankfully the water isn't too choppy today, and Jak's chest only bounces an immodest amount.

A few minutes out from shore and you can see the yacht is a good 80-footer, white, and sleek. Black smoke billows from the bridge, turning the red setting son hazy and bloated in the wavering air. But before you can reach it, you see three dark shapes floating in the water. As you approach, they raise hands and start waving. Three people overboard!

"Help!" one cries out! Water washes into their mouth and they choke on the salty fluid.
Jun 6, 2025 1:58 pm
Bobby isn't the most athletic of the bunch but they practiced this once during his training / onboarding. He'd theoretically performed the maneuver in Salt Lake City, too, but that was from a paddle boat. From this high octane speedboat, it was a nightmare.

As Jak roared into the vicinity, he tossed his medkit onto the seats, grabbed a float, and prepared to dive in - while the boat was moving. What madness was this?

He froze. Unwilling to go first, he grabbed his calf. "Cramp!"
Jun 6, 2025 2:44 pm
Zara hung off the rails of the gunwale as Jak throttled them at speed towards the burning yacht, even though there were seats aplenty. It gave her the sensation of wakesurfing without the back tow, if one imagined the side hull as her wakeboard. Andri and Jak were yammering on about something something floatation devices, but the sea spray made it harder for Zara to hear exactly what they were saying, although her vision was perfectly clear thanks to her water-repellant spectacles; she could never bring herself to wear diving goggles except as a hairband accessory.

As they neared the yacht in trouble, Zara could see survivors in the water. Up top, Bobby made as if he was ready to dive in. No way she was going to let him beat her to it! With an arm fully extended to trail the water surface with her fingertips, she arched diagonally forward and launched herself at an angle from their own speedboat even as Jak slowed the engine down.

"Oh my. That looks bad," Andreva says, stating the obvious. Having done plenty of diving and swimming, almost from the cradle, she grabs a life preserver and dives right in, ready to save some lives.
Jun 6, 2025 10:01 pm
After Zara dives into the water like a pro, going after the closer flounderer, Jak wrenches the wheel of the powerboat and cuts towards the other two victims bobbing in the water. The vibration of the twin massive outboards plays havoc with the woman’s body, in the best way possible.

"Bobby!" she yells over the engine and the wind and the salt spray, "You’re up next! Go go go!"
OOC:
Is there an ‘aid’ or help mechanic? Jak’s trying to help the other lifeguards, just like she’s trying to "help" Steele by showing her just what a lifeguard is supposed to look like.

Bobby groans and leaps into the water, faking a sore leg. He's not afraid, not exactly, well, not entirely, but the fire is oh so hot.

After getting on the rescue boat, Cassie had quickly retreated to the hold below decks. She had tried to distract herself by double and triple checking the first aid kits and gear. Finally, the pills were taking effect as her headache eased and her heartbeat slowed to a normal rhythm.

As she felt Jak slowing down the speedboat, Cassie knew it was go time. With a few deep breaths, she grabbed a first aid kit and started climbing up onto the deck. "Ok its go time Cassie. Get over yourself and focus. These people need you," she said to herself as she reached the top of the stairs.

Up on deck, she rushed to the railing nearest the flaming yacht, ready to help with hauling survivors on board and beginning triage.

"There's nothing wrong with you, Bobby," she shouts in passing. "Your legs are fine. Don't be such a chicken!"

Secretly she hopes there is more to the fire than meets the eye. Something not quite mundane.

Together you pull out two women and a man. The women look like models or escorts maybe, young and beautiful with skimpy bathing suits that would make parents cover their kid's eyes. The man is middle-aged and is wearing a captain's uniform. He has a gash in his forehead and is currently unconscious. The women are hysterical and talking over each other saying things like "He set fire to the boat!", "You have to save the others!", and "I thought they were going to kill us!".
Jun 8, 2025 5:12 pm
Fisher has the boat idling as the other lifeguards come aboard with shaken hot girls and the unconscious dude, but the moment she hears that there are others she hits the throttle and moves the speedboat towards the flaming yacht. Ideally towards a non-fiery part of the vessel where they can climb aboard and look for other survivors...

"No, you back off," she says quietly, under her breath.

As the survivors come aboard, Cassie falls back on her training to handle the crisis. All those hours practicing triage during her residency at UC Miskatonic were paying off again.

"Ok, we're going to get your friends off the yacht." She takes a pen light and uses the light to check the survivors' pupils. "So the captain here was the one who set fire to the boat? Is that how he tried to kill you? Or was he trying to stop someone else who wanted to kill you?"

Turning to Jak she says "Sounds like a case of unfathomable knowledge induced mania. We need to get to that boat and make sure there isn't a harpoon wielding maniac still on the loose!" Jak may be 20 years out from crippling back pain, but Cassie trusted her in a crisis. Zara and Andreva amazed her with their grace under fire and willingness to confront danger. And Bobby... Well, every team needed a Bobby. Even though Cassie woke up everyday half expecting to see his name in the Sunset Beach Chronicle police blotter.
Jun 9, 2025 12:24 pm
Both women nod, but its hard to tell which question they are responding to! One babbles, "He was trying to sacrifice us! The captain and some others. They were wearing robes!" The other says, "He's got hostages! Some guy and a chick, I think they work for him. There were others but we jumped as soon as we started being attacked!"

As Jak pulls the boat closer, she can see the fire is limited to the bridge. The wide top deck shows signs of a recent party. There are streamers and Christmas lights strung among the railings and handholds, some discarded bikinis and swim trunks drape over chair backs and boat rails, and wild music thumps from somewhere below decks. There are scattered beach chairs, half-empty wine bottles in cup holders. It looks like a wild party, interrupted. The smell of oily smoke and burnt coconut suntan lotion tickles your nose.
Jun 9, 2025 12:57 pm
Zara permitted herself a moment to appreciate the fine form of the woman she had just saved when she embraced her to safety; she needed to work on her own abs more for that beach perfect bod-- before the panicked chattering snapped her back to reality. She was glad Cassie had the trained presence of mind to calm the survivors with her assuring words. "Sacrificial bonfire gone wrong?" She craned to see if there were any other people on the top deck of the ship.
OOC:
We can see only the bridge and the top deck at this point? And no one's standing around at either location?
Jun 9, 2025 3:31 pm
"Hold up Cassie," Andreva says, subtly nodding a no in her direction. The girl was going a bit far in her questioning, which wasn't her role in the first place.

Unfathomable knowledge induced mania. What even was that?

"Um, who belongs to those empty bikinis and swimming trunks over there? Anyone below decks?"
Jun 9, 2025 4:01 pm
Bobby sees that Cassie has the survivors well in hand, and briefly helps her with a quick triage of them for any life threatening or serious injuries.

As they tell their quick overview of what happens, he bounces up to Jak. "There, we can get in there, the fuel tanks are there so keep clear of those." His breath is quick from the exciting plunge, and he forgets about his 'cramp'. Those women were hot as fuck "Bet that was quite the party," he drawls lasciviously.

Cassie sees Andreva throw her a look and she falters. Was she making the same mistakes as before? But this was different, the fire was in the bridge not the engine room and the deck was covered in party leftovers rather than human waste. Things could still turn out for the better. She could save everyone this time.

Considering the survivors' story, it was clear at least some of them were a danger and needed to be restrained. She turned to Bobby. "I'll probably regret asking, but any chance you have several pairs of handcuffs? Or at least can tie a restraint out of a thong?"
Jun 11, 2025 1:41 am

I guess yachts mostly have stairs rather than ladders lol. So let's pretend I send stairs instead. Shows my knowledge of boats come from ones under 40 feet! Here's a rough example of what it looks like.
https://i.imgur.com/N3dMule.jpeg

Jak parks the boat at the stern and ties off on one of the yacht's gold-plated cleats. The steep stairs lead to the back of the boat. Straight ahead in the captain's cockpit room is where the fire burns, black smoke pouring out through the open door. Around the deck are wooden lounge chairs, scattered pillows, dustings of suspicious white powder. There's also a hot tub between the stern and the captain's cabin. And someone in the hot tub! A cloaked figure rises from the water, blood-colored robe dripping water. Several more robed figures appear from behind deck chairs or around the central cabin. There are five in all. Each one wields a sharp sacrificial kris!
Jun 11, 2025 1:23 pm
"That's way out of our league!" Zara might've been trained as a cop, but there was no way the five of them ought to be dealing with five persons armed with knives. Where was the coast guard when you needed them? "Back, back! We need to put some distance between them and us." She glanced at the fire extinguishers they were hauling out of their rescue boat, thinking that in the worst case she would spray these assailants as cover.

"Right. I don't see us overpowering knife-wielding cultists, let alone cuffing them."

What a story! What a headline!

Nautical Knife-Wielding Cult Found on Yacht. Sacrificed Passengers Feared Dead!

Following Zara's eyes, she nods. "How about a coordinated attack? Spray them all at the same time. Maybe the chemicals will smother them." To the other she cries, "Grab one each!"

But would that even work? Did that one robed figure come up from under the hot tub water? Andreva had read about these cults on the boards, but you never really knew what to believe. Her friend Jill, her only friend, was a huge conspiracy theorist, and some of that had influenced Andreva's thinking.
Jun 11, 2025 5:59 pm
Bobby laughs and hefts one of the extinguishers they brought. He nods, and says, "Flame retardment foam in the eye is no sexy fun-time. Okay, maybe once."

When they're ready, he'll lead the charge up the stairs. His mind is partially on how Jak was giving him the once over; chicks dig a manly rug of chest hair, it's true.

Jaklyn narrows her eyes at the knife-wielding lunatics. Cultists! Again!

"Be careful, everyone," she calls out to the brave group preparing to rush the robed figures. "They have knives! And I have an idea! Spray them, then fall back if they come at you, draw them to the rear of the ship, to the stairs! Then get clear!"

If her team does this and clambers back aboard the power boat, Jak will gun the engine and shove the yacht hard as the bastards come down the steps, hopefully knocking the nut-balls into the water!

Running only on adrenaline, Cassie grabs a fire extinguisher and leaps into the yacht. Rather than trying to hurt the robed cultists, she focuses on getting foam in their eyes and leading them to the back steps. Her time as a cruise ship doctor has gotten her used to dodging drunk, handsy passengers and it serves her well here.

Although the floor of the yacht is strewn with party mess, Cassie's eye for detail helps her know when to step over a broken glass or tangled banana hammock.

"Wait do we still have that harpoon from the time when Bobby thought it'd be fun to wakeboard by latching on to passing jetskis?" Zara quickly scrambled to fish out a compressed CO2 one-hand harpoon from storage in lieu of an extinguisher. She watched the emergence of the cultists to see if she could predict what they might do next, out voodoo their voodoo so to speak, ready to defend herself and the rest of her team from their attacks. Maybe if she knocked the lead cultist (for her assumed the one emerging from the pool was indeed one) back into the pool with a decisive shot to the leg, or pinned them down in similar fashion, the rest of the spooky ones would back off or turn tail.

The crew are quick thinkers and have several plans going on. Cassie lets out a blast from her fire extinguisher, spraying the cultist in the face. She gives a muffled shout and staggers backward, hitting the railing and tumbling backward into the water. Splash.

Andreva and Bobby both try the fire extinguisher tactic as well but it seems the cultists have quickly caught on after Cassie's success and the pair of cultists turn around quickly so the extinguisher's blast merely coats the backs of their robes. Thankfully Jak takes advantage of the situation and rams the back of the yacht with the front of your lifeguard boat. The collision unbalances the two cultists and they tumble to the ground. Unfortunately it makes Andreva and Bobby tumble down too, their extinguishers flying from their hands.

Zara takes the more direct and violent approach by using the speargun. The hot tub cultist is shocked to find a spear suddenly appear in his foot, pinning him to the deck of the boat. A male voice screams as he drops his knife and attempts to pull out the spear. The pain seems to be too much and he passes out from the pain.

The final cultist leaps from the back of the deck and onto the boat with Jaks! The landing is not very graceful and his knife is dropped in the impact.
OOC:
Each cultist has 2 effort tokens (basically HP), so take 2 successes to eliminate each one. Zara and Cassie each got two successes so their cultists are out of the fight. Jaks got one success so 1 effort token remains on her cultist. The last two cultists have both their tokens remaining.
Jun 14, 2025 6:44 pm
Bobby feels the deck impact his back and the fire extinguisher roll away. He rolls with it, and bumps into Andreva, before scrambling to his feet. "I'll go low, you go high!" he explains and charges the cultist still on the yacht.

His real goal is to set them up so Andreva can do the hard work of taking them out.

Jak swears like a sailor when the boats collide and she knocks not only cultists, but also Bobby and Andreva off their feet. The cartoonishly buxom woman has no time to apologize or berate though, because another robed fiend drops down onto the speedboat right in front of her!

Looking like she does, Fisher has long studied martial arts. Judo, Krav Maga, Capoeira, rhythmic gymnastics, American Ninja Warrior -- Jak has been to the orientation sessions of countless self-defense classes before deciding her grooming schedule wouldn't allow the commitment needed. She uses them now, those skills, leaving the controls and bounding to meet the interloper head-on!

Bobby intends to set-up Andreva but instead winds up tackling the cultist himself. The cultist trips over a pool noodle and cracks his head on the gunwale. Lights out for one more cultist.

In the lifeguard boat, Jaklyn attempts some self defense moves. Sadly she misjudges the weight and momentum of her bouncing bazongas and it throws her off balance enough for the cultist to push her off balance. Jak tumbles over the pilot's chair and bangs the funny bone of her dominant hand, making it go numb from elbow to fingertips.

Cassie leaps on the cultist she's engaged with, a bulky man with luckily throbbing veins. She injects her sleepy juice into a prominent one and he quickly slips into silent sleep.

Zara wields the speargun like a baseball bat and cracks a solid hit against the hooded cultist's temple. He staggers slightly but shakes his head and stalks toward her, arm outreached to snatch the gun from her hands!

"Where's the damn coastguard when you need them?" Zara privately made a note to give Bradley Hammell a piece of her mind when they arrived. Lieutenant 'Mad Cad' Brad was a fine piece of action of the Cali Coastguard who could give Bobby a run for his money. If only he looked past Zara's spectacles and into her bright brown eyes he'd see that she had the hots for ... Youch! She lost her grip on the harpoon barrel as the cultist she clubbed shook off the momentary distraction and made a lunge for her.

From the corner of her eye she could see Andreva dodging forward to lend her a hand. Just as the cultist yanked the gun out of her hand, Zara used his momentum against him, suddenly releasing her hold such that he tipped forward, enough for her to muay thai knee him in the nads!

Andreva and Zars work together to confuse the cultist long enough for Zara to obliterate his gonads with an explosive knee that sends him to the floor in unbelievable pain.

Over on the lifeguard boat, Jak is likewise assaulting a cultist's reproductive organs. For some unknown reason, perhaps that only Jak known, the modern speedboat for Sunset Hills Lifeguards has an old-timey spoke-style steering wheel. One of the spokes catches the man in the family jewels and he falls to his knees clutching what are most likely now shattered jewels. To add injury to injury, Cassie lobs a thick champaign bottle at the cultist's head. It connects with a solid clonk and he goes down into dreamland.

Bobby, seeing these others taking care of the aggressors, uses his extinguisher for its intended purpose and begins dousing the fire. It only takes a few moments to slather the control room with a thick layer of foam that extinguished the fire.

With the immediate threats dealt with, you all can hear the thumping music as well as a distant cry for help from below.

Teehee, was wondering if I was going to get called on the old-timey wheel. :)
"Who are these people?!" Jak exclaims loudly, checking her nails as the last of the cultists falls. The shapely woman is happy that the power boat’s steering wheel is in the shop, and the one they borrowed from The Black Plague party / pirate ship in the harbor has worked out well! That night with hot Captain Arrando (and first mate Pete, and second mate Larry, and hands Ted and Marcella) really paid off!

Grabbing a line, the bikini-wearing lifeguard bounds over to the now no-longer-burning boat and ties up to it so the speedboat won’t float away.
Jun 20, 2025 8:29 pm
Andreva grimaces and thanks the sea gods for being a woman. "That had to hurt, Zara!"

But no time to dwell on crushed testicles.

"Hey guys? I hear music and someone in distress below deck. We'd better take a look. Might be the people who belonged to those abandoned bikinis. So they are probably naked," Andreva states matter-of-factly.

Bobby puts down the fire extinguisher. "Expert mode, unlocked," he mutters. "I used to be a firefighter. The instincts never really go away."

After Andreva gives her assessment, he says, "Lets get to their rescuing then!"

With an eye to make sure the others are following, he heads toward the music.
Jun 22, 2025 12:36 am
"Jak and I come from the same school of self-defence when it comes to big boys," Zara smirked in reply to Andreva. She proceeded to search the cultists, pulling their hoods and robes off to look for clues, whether they recognised any of them, whether they can divested themselves of swimwear which they then left draped around the deck. Who were these people? Why pull a stunt like this so close to shore?
OOC:

Unhooding the cultists you don't see anyone you recognize. They seem to be upper-class judging by their well-groomed nature, healthy skin, manicured hands and feet, and lack of open sores or missing teeth. Each of them is indeed naked below their robes, dangly bits hanging free.

Below decks you reach an opulent tropical-themed dance floor where all the angles are wrong. Band posters shift when out of view, a disco ball reflects unrecognizable colors, and an old-timey record player spins a warped record that blares classic rock (backwards, of course) making your head swim even more. Another cry for help comes from behind a closed door on the far side of the dance floor.
OOC:
Everyone will need to make a Crafty 6 roll to reach the other side.

Cassie kneels down to examine some of the powder scattered across a bolted down table.

"Looks like they were getting high sniffing 'Dagon's dandruff'. My guess is some Hollywood types picked the wrong bay to party. I can call it in and check the dock records to see who owns the boat."

But she realizes she is trying to get off this yacht ASAP and instead steels her nerves. "After we rescue any other survivors of course." She grabs a discarded stiletto to use for self defense.
Down below decks, Cassie tries to focus on the visuals she knows are real to fight against the unsettling music and disorienting visuals. That was a real band on that poster wasn't it? And did she recognize that tune? If only it was playing correctly...

Jak, Andreva, and Zara steel their nerves or come up with some other method of reducing the effects of this reality-warping dancefloor. They reach the other side without problem.

The same can not be said for Bobby and Cassie. Bobby finds the warbly tune an earworm. There is something about it that makes him want to swing his hips and tap his toes. Why has no one else tried to play music backwards before? Maybe this could be a whole new genre!

Cassie however stops in her tracks as she sees a poster for her favorite band on the wall. Even more unbelievably, the figures in the poster start moving. They wink at Cassie and beckon her over. Then they jump out of the poster, growing to their normal sizes. "How's it going, Cassie? Still keeping in great shape I see. Cassie decides to use the rhythmic gymnastics routine that she'd performed for the cruise ship talent show. The routine had already been choreographed to the Snuggle Monsters' hit song Lay Your Head on My Pillows so it would be perfect.

Was the turntable itself running backwards, or is this a record filled with backwards-sounding music? The woman checks the equipment and the record label.

There was that cry for help on the other side of this floor. Extinguishers and what have you at the ready!" she announces as she heads towards the door.

Opening the door reveals the master bedroom of the yacht. It is a tacky room of 80s design. A giant waterbed sits in the center against the far wall draped in zebra-print sheets and various other animal print throw pillows. Next to the bed are a man in beachwear and a woman in business casual clothes bound in nylon ship's rope. On top of the waterbed is washed up 80s superstar Eric Zahn! He's seen better days (or decades) as his body shows the soft roundness of excess, his long blonde hair is unkempt and mostly hidden under a sea captain's hat, and his handlebar mustache is several decades out of fashion. Zahn grips a large and ancient tome in both hands.

"Fools! You’re too late! Arise, my chthonian crustacean! Arise and obey!"

A giant lobster claw bursts from the waterbed in front of Zahn. A horrifying creature emerges, armored and highly annoyed. Water from the bed pours off its body as it extricates its large pincers and pointy legs the size of spears. The Rock Lobster attacks Zahn with one claw, knocking off his captain’s hat as he dodges backward. Then the eye stalks swivel in the direction to the struggling bound victims. It begins to advance!

"Yikes, that could fry us all if the water flooded the place!" She twisted her body away from the bed as Andreva shouted the warning, not wanting to electrocute everyone in the room if the lamp Jak threw were to land. Instead she pirouetted to make a lunge for Zahn, intending to body tackle him down in order to grab or at least dislodge the eldritch tome from his hands.

As the chaos of the lobster creature's attack unfolded, Cassie focused on the two hostages tied up by the bed. She nimbly rushes over to them and begins untying the nylon rope, using her doctor's knowledge of knots to guide her hands.

"If we can rescue the hostages, we can let the Coast Guard and Deep Sea Animal Control handle Mr. Zahn and his... pet?"

Lol so many rolls, so little applied to dealing with the crustacean. Bobby's success reduces Jak's TN so she scores 1 success, Andreva scores 1 as well. Zara's rolling against Zahn which is tangentially related enough I'll count that as toward the creature as well. Cassie succeeds but doesn't reduce the amount of effort tokens of the monster. That leaves 7 effort tokens remaining.
Bobby sprays the giant crustacean in the eyes enough to momentarily blind it, giving Jak the opportunity to throw a lamp into the waterbed. The surge electricity races through the shelled abomination causing it to twitch and spasm. It doesn't last long however as the shock blows the fuse in the cabin causing all the lights to go out, plunging the room into darkness.

Andreva flings a fire extinguisher and hears a satisfying crunch as it lands on...something. Zara tackles Zahn and his eldritch tomb bounces from his hand as they both hit the carpeted floor hard. The book's final destination is unknown as the room goes dark. Luckily Cassie is already untying the two hostages as she loses most of her vision and her hands do the rest of the work, freeing the man and woman.

The only problem now is that there is a blinded angry crustacean wildly swinging its arms around in a confined cabin!

With the electricity now shorted out, and the fact that Zara had last noted where the drainage plug to the waterbed was, it was now safer to pull the plug on the thrashing beast above her. She crawled on all fours to feel along the edge of the bed until she reached the cap, and gave it a solid yank to pry it open.

Sorry, thought I posted here several days ago! The crustacean is down to only 3 effort tokens remaining!
Zara begins draining the waterbed. It feels as if it is have some kind of effect to weaken the creature, making it more sluggish and less menacing, but still dangerous.

Cassie makes a flamethrower out of an aerosol can and a lighter. A bright jet of fire lights up the darkened room and burns one eye stalk to a crisp that smells like cooked crab meat.

Andreva calls out to her ancestor. The crab seems confused as her words fight with those Zahn had used to summon it. It snaps its pincers in futile confusion.

Bobby grabs a thick champaign bottle and smashed it against the creatures shell, cracking it open in a spot on its topside. Purple pulsating flesh lies under the orange-red carapace!

Just then the a crack in the hull breaks open and cold salty water begins leaking into the room! The boat is starting to sink! The crabstrosity attempts to extricate itself from the waterbed and block the exit.

Step 1: stick your dick in the hole in the hull. Step 2: drink the water in the boat. Step 3: pee out the water through the hole.

Unsure that's actually a workable solution, he looks for the fire extinguisher once more, and attempts to jam it into a claw to keep him from getting more grabby.

Remembering her last disastrous meal at Red Lobster (when she agreed to go on a date with Bobby before realizing how much of a Bobby he actually was), a look of determination sets on Jak’s striking features as she darts forward, trying to grab—and snap—one of the monster’s eyestalks!

The scene slows as she bounds and bounces forward, switching to a super-slo-mo monster-cam view of the woman coming right at the beast, chest filling the camera shot.

While the team have creative solutions, most of them fail to materialize as a several-hundred-pound demon-crustacean is more formidable than it already sounds. However Bobby and Cassie save the day. Bobby jams one of its claws with a fire extinguisher which it then crushes, exploding the tank and blasting apart its claw in the process. Meanwhile Cassie grabs a ceramic swordfish and manages to pierce the thin part of its shell just above its brain, skewering the thinking organ and turning it to Swiss cheese. The giant crustacean shudders and collapses heavily, whereupon it begins to bubble and decompose before your eyes! The smell of hot lobster meat and smoking seawater is overwhelming but not altogether unpleasant.

Eric Zahn cries out from his place in the corner of the room. He is on hands and knees, searching blindly for the book. "You will pay for that! Do you know how long I've been planning this? Next time it will be a colossal Deep One! Now where is that book?" He continues to feel around. The backup battery power kicks on and the interior lights begin to glow. The book is waterlogged and covered with extinguisher foam in the opposite corner.
OOC:

"A Deep One? Hah! That's a laugh." But Andreva secretly admired the Deep Ones from all the myths and stories passed down through generations of her family. She wanted to meet one, but at the same time was terrified by them.

"So whado we do with him?" she asks the group, pointing at the hysterical Zahn. "I suppose we could torture him to extract all this planning he claims to have done." She glares right at the man, wondering if her threat had any effect.

"You mean this?" Zara had held on to the book, the source of their eldritch problem. There was no way she'd let it fall back into Zahn's hands again. "What are you up to Zahn? This isn't one of your movies."

Jak heads back topside to make sure the captives are okay, her boat is in one piece, her bikini is still meeting Comics Code Authority requirements, and to escape the whole Red Lobster Gone Wrong thing.

"Tie him up, gag him!" she says as she goes, confident the others can manage the weirdo cult leader.
Jul 11, 2025 10:02 pm
Cassie grabs a pillow off the floor near the bed and yanks off the leopard print pillow case. Then she ties the wet cloth into a surgeon's knot around Zahn's wrists. "Answer the question unless you want to go down with this ship to sleep with your dark gods for eternity!"
Jul 12, 2025 4:18 am
Bobby is covered in fire retardant foam from the exploded fire extinguisher and rubs sploobs of it off his cheeks. He eyes Zahn narrowly with one uncovered eye. "Coast Guard are on their way and everyone knows they specialize in neutralizing Deep Ones," he lies easily, "so no sense wasting bad magic. Besides, these girls mean business."
Jul 13, 2025 8:35 am
As you tie up Zahn and begin to interrogate him, he rants, "They wouldn't hire me anymore! These suits and bigwigs say I'm all washed up! Well I'll show them. The voice wants a sacrifice to gift me ideas and creativity. What have these rich bloodsuckers ever contributed to art? No one will even miss them! One studio executive is as good as another! Think how many directors you know! How many studio executives can you name? Yeah, that's what I thought. It's a small sacrifice! Let me go!"

Then you feel it in your bodies. The boat is beginning to move. A slight tug makes you wobble as you readjust for balance. The motion increases, and most alarmingly it is not in a straight direction. Peering out through the whole in the side of the yacht you can see you are starting to move in a circular motion. Then as the yacht begins a slow spin you see it: a whirl pool has opened up beneath the yacht! There's a larger jerk as the yacht is fully caught in the whirlpool's motion! The newly freed captives begin to panic!
Jul 13, 2025 2:29 pm
Having headed back topside, Fisher is first to see the whirlpool, and the sight of it raises the fine blonde hairs on her arms. "Whoa whoa! Everyone!" she shouts below. "Let's go go go! Back to the boat, the water's looking ugly up here!"

Lurching to keep her feet as the attached vessels start to move, to spin, she helps the captives still on deck onto the lifeguard powerboat. Once they are aboard, she fires up the engine and leaves it at idle as she crawls over to where she's tied up to the larger boat. Once everyone is aboard, she'll cast off and return to the wheel of her boat.

"What does the coastguard do Bobby, that everyone knows? "Shaking her head yet again, Andreva says, "That's okay, I'll swim. What about Zahn?"

Lol yeah I didn't expect quite so much activity in a single turn. There are further developments once you leave the interior.
Jak dashes from the yacht interior to the deck. What she sees sends tingles through her as she realizes this is no ordinary whirlpool. The whirlpool is created by a gravity vortex spinning like a tornado around the yacht. Floating in the air are all manner of boating equipment and miscellaneous items: loose life jackets, buouys, beer cans and champaign bottles, docking ropes writhing around like snakes, and, of course, lots of articles of discarded clothes that were strewn about the deck.
OOC:
It'll be a TN 5 Agility or Brawn to either dodge or push through the flying debris and make it to the boat. Crafty can also be 5 if you sell a creative use for it. No Grit loss on a failure, but it will cause a setback as you won't make it to the boat this round.

"Okay, not good!" Jak says at the top of the stairs, witnessing the bizarre vortex that seems to be affecting much more than the water. Noting with a raised eyebrow the anti-gravity effects on her own body (this must be what it feels like to be built like a boy, or Andreva), she shouts back down the stairs.

"Double-time, guys! It’s getting weird up here!"

Then she plunges into the swirl of objects, trying to make her way to the boat…

Jak and Cassie make it to the boat. Jak gets the engines fired up. The docking lines are stretched taut from the suction of water and anti-gravity as they're the only thing keeping the boats together.

"What the hell did you do Zahn?" The situation had turned critical, and everyone was scrambling to safety. "Did your spell go wrong?" Zara rifled through the eldritch tome she held in her hands, looking for clues as to what Zahn might have tried to cast which had backfired, to cause the whirlpool. Perhaps they could reverse or dispel the phenomenon.
OOC:
Sorry for the delay, was really offscreen for a while this time. Any chance the whirlpool is a result of magicks gone wrong? And Zara can attempt to figure out what it is and how to try to put a stop to that? Does the book give a clue (ie. help a die roll for this?)

"You made it go wrong!" Zahn screams, spittle flying from his lips. "You interrupted the summoning! The sacrifices were not made! You don't cheat a god of its sacrifice, you bimbo! It will take it any way it can!" He begins laughing manically.

Meanwhile back at the boat, Bobby joins the group, arriving via champaign-bottle-jet-packs in fabulous style.
