Jump One to Mora

The sudden arrival of Kayla Hong, along with her notarized ship-share and claim to a crew position, has caused quite a stir. But the cold-berth passengers are gathering in the departures lounge, and the three Middle-Passengers will be coming along shortly, too. Too much to do to give this new complication the attention it deserves!

Rin and Said Ma prepare the cold-berths, and then escort the chanting religious piligrims in for medical prep, and then encapsulation. This is an exacting task, but not particularly complicated. And the 10 low passengers have gone through the process before and cause no trouble. The three middle-passengers arrive soon after the 'freezers' are activated, and it takes some time to get them settled in and oriented; safety briefings and meal schedules and all the rest.

Engineering is time consuming but easy enough. Jump Navigation is likewise time-consuming, exacting, but its all math and the computer could probably do it on its own, though the refinements and tweaks needed for the most efficient possible jump might lack.

Last minute bureaucratic details; Ships Log signed off and customs & immigration forms filed. Jump Plan updated. All is 'Go'!

Finally, departure time arrives and Tharrok eases the "Miss Fortune" out from its docking-ring. 'Control' assigns a departure route and warns of incoming and departing traffic. Then its 5 hours of 1G thrust (acceleratio/deceleration) to the jump-point.

We need dice rolls from pilot, chief engineer, and navigator. Assistants can add +1 to the rolls but that assistance must be stated. One character can only assist with one task.

The Miss Fortune hummed with quiet purpose, her systems purring like a big cat stretching before a leap. In the dimmed lighting of the bridge, the only illumination came from a constellation of displays and the soft white glow of the nav-holosphere flickering before L.C. Rains.

LC sat cross-legged in the navigator’s seat, mug of lukewarm recaf precariously balanced on the edge of the console. His eyes tracked the slow ballet of celestial bodies rendered in perfect scale—Jokotre’s brilliant sun, the gravitational pulls of her moons, the overlapping radii of planetary diameters, and the shimmering veil of the jump shadow.

He muttered to himself, tapping at the handcomp and running vector-checks.
"Let’s not kiss the magnetosphere this time, shall we?" he said, aiming that mostly at himself.

The autopilot could handle the basic burn—any halfwit nav-program could—but plotting a clean, safe course to the 100-diameter mark without turbulence or magnetic interference was an art. And LC prided himself on painting with the best brushes.

He pulled up the most recent traffic updates, fuel vectors, and stellar weather—adjusting for solar flares and drift from the station’s orbit. With a few decisive keystrokes, he transferred his work to the main nav-comp and let the core processor chew through the math.

"Come on, sweetheart," he coaxed the computer gently, "give Papa a clean corridor."

Numbers cascaded. The nav-comp bleeped its approval. LC leaned back, watching the route resolve in a glittering ribbon of light across the holosphere—perfectly arced, safely within tolerance, and whisper-close to efficient.

He stood and keyed the all-crew channel.

"Jump vector is charted. We’ve got a smooth flightpath to the edge of reality—no sunspots, no traffic jams, and no getting spaghettified by stray gravity wells. We’ll begin the burn on schedule. Let’s make this one clean, professional, and boring. The kind of boring you drink to forget because nothing exploded."

He clicked the channel off, then added with a smile to himself:

"And that, Miss Fortune, is how we surf the stars."

The "Miss Fortune" lurches into the alternate-universe known as jump-space. Even experienced Spacers experience a moment of vertigo, a touch of nausea, maybe several seconds of constricted vision or 'dancing lights' in front of their eyes. Symptoms can be different with every jump!

Engineering controls show everything 'green'. Jump Bubble formed as expected.

Navigation/Astrogation read-outs are optimal, but now in jump-space only show what happened up to the jump itself.

Time to check on your passengers. Your 3 middle-passengers are seasoned travelers and show no discomfort, and are soon ready to emerge from their cabins and gather in the 'lounge'.

You have somewhere between 6 and 8 'standard' days in jump-space before emergence in Mora system. One person on bridge-watch, and often passenger service duties to perform, but otherwise there's considerable time to devote to fitness work-outs, computer sims, entertainment programs, and such.

Next Stop: MORA.

Future Plans discussed elsewhere...
The 'jump' proceeds normally.... 6 days pass and no sign of emergence. Then 7 days. Not too unusual. No jump sickness, so its almost surely a clean jump. But every hour after '168' and the anxiety level builds. There are common tales of ships that jumped, then never emerged. Or if they did emerge, it was somewhere that no one ever found. Ghost stories? Fairy Tales?

But then the alarms sound. Bubble integrity fading. Fluctuation increasing. Emergence imminent!

May 13, 1115 (Imperium Standard Years), 1600. 15 minutes after the first warnings, the ship's artificial gravity flickers, stomachs lurch, many have a moment of vertigo. But zam wham wowie, MISS FORTUNE returns to Normal Space!
