The coin arced through the torchlit air, spinning like a lazy star before landing neatly in the gloved hand of the nearest guard. The figure caught it without flinching, but made no move to pocket it. Instead, they held it up to the flickering light.
The second guard stepped forward half a pace, voice low and steady behind the featureless black mask.
"A single gold?" he said, coated in dry skepticism. "That’s the kind of generosity one shows to street urchins playing flute by the docks — not to professionals tasked with safeguarding an event where artifacts can buy kingdoms or end them."
The first guard now chimed in, just as calmly.
"If you are indeed a guest, sir, then you’ll surely understand the value of discretion — and of gratitude. Five more gold, and the special silver coin," they said, lifting their hand slightly, "not for entry, of course — but for... safeguard. So that nothing unfortunate is reported to the wrong ears."
