Chapter 1: Exodus

Aguz has dim memories of battles against similar foes as these. In the vernacular, they are known as "acid burrowers." They generally avoid heavily settled areas like cities, but their predilection for livestock and humanoid flesh ensures that the creatures do not remain in the deep wilderness for long. Despite their fearsome nature, they are just beasts and are not servants of some other malevolent force.

Ezail reloads his hand crossbow—he breathes heavily, his body coming down from the adrenaline rush of battle. He sheaths his weapons—then—he looks at the group and smirks. "Well, nothing beats a little exercise before dinner, eh?"

Phu takes forth a role of leather, that contains different magical tools, and some medical equipment.
Let me see your injuries
Ezail Vianu knows that Phu's healing services was one of the main reasons the gangs left him alone. He never refused a patient - except the one who had attacked him. Phu had been standing next to Frank while he bled out. 3 days earlier Frank at gutpunched Phu out of spite, but now he was dying. Anyone who approached Frank to help him got a staredown from Phu, and then they agreed that Frank had been a barstard all along, and would not be missed.

This story turned out a bit darker than I had expected when I began to write

"Dinner!" Fizzle suddenly exclaims as Ezail mentions it. He hurries back.

"If the pot is burned..." he mutters, but is surprised to find it still eatable.

He takes a small spoon out of a pocket and takes a taste of the stew. "Almost perfection."

He looks over at where they fought the creatures and contemplates if it is edible, but shakes his head, nope.

Agûz makes no indication of having heard Phu or the rest of his companions. Instead, he continues kneeling beside the creature, inspecting the piece of flesh in his hand and getting lost in thought. He shakes himself out his reverie after a few moments, and turns to address Chiara. The light newly cast on his face from the campfire exposes the muscle-deep acid burn on his cheek, which he has made no indication of noticing.

"Acid burrowers." Agûz says simply, his eye meeting hers. "We seem to be getting into some dangerous territory. We will have to make haste."
Jul 7, 2025 5:26 am
Chiara nods as Agûz names the creatures and suggests they hurry. She too does not want to tarry, or have to face such creatures again soon. But that will have to wait until they have broken camp.

Fortunately, Aguz knows that acid burrowers don't congregate in large numbers. These two were likely a mated pair. Additionally, their role as apex predators means there likely won't be any other dangerous beasts in this area. The campsite should be safe now.

Indeed, the night passes without incident. In the morning, the caravan prepares to head out again. The caravan master, a middle-aged human woman named Ramona, approaches you. "We'd best get moving if we are to stay ahead of the spiders. But we could use some advice on which way to go."

There are two likely villages nearby that you can head towards:

Bramble Hollow is the closer choice. It is two days' travel away. Bramble Hollow is a quiet hamlet nestled in a dense thicket of trees at the edge of the Sparrowfen Marshes. Known for its herbalists and hunters, the village has a self-reliant population and sturdy palisades grown from magically-reinforced living wood. However, it's a small community with just enough resources for itself. A large caravan may strain their food stores and goodwill. Also, the village elders are wary of newcomers, and gaining their trust could be challenging.

Thornharbor is more distant, about six days' travel away. Thornharbor is a bustling river-trade village built around a fortified stone bridge spanning the River Velm. It serves as a minor trade hub, protected by a local militia and a charter from the Duke of Redmere. In addition to strong defenses, Thornharbor has hosted displaced groups before and may have the capacity or policies to absorb refugees. However, the road to Thornharbor passes through open fields and a narrow pass, which are dangerous terrain if enemies are near. And if others have also fled the destruction caused by the Araenae, Thornharbor may already be stretched thin.

I say we head for Thornharbor. I know its further way, but it opens for so many more oppertunities
Phu sits with Chiara and Prepare for tomorrow, looking at skeched maps

Chiara agrees with Phu, saying, "Yes, I would rather take our chances there, because it is safer long-term, and gives access tot he river, should we wish to travel even further. We will be vulnerable on the road, however, so we should do what we can to prepare for any eventuality."

That night at camp, Chiara discusses with Phu her plans for if they are attacked on the road.
Jul 8, 2025 3:55 pm
"Thanks for the help, Phu. I agree—We should go to Thornharbor."
Jul 9, 2025 4:46 am
Agûz silently tends to his wounds as the rest of the group discusses their destination. Looking up, his voice comes clearly through the speakers. "It is a wise choice. I shall second it."
Jul 9, 2025 2:15 pm
"Fizzle takes you wherever you want to," the goblin says with a shrug while repairing his armor, that took some acid damage in the fight.

Waking up the next morning, it seems a night of rest was just what he needed, and the small wound that made it through the armor is already healing well.
Jul 10, 2025 11:39 am
Ramona nods and moves to tell the other members of the caravan about your decision. Soon, the camp has been struck and the wagons are packed up and ready to go.

You travel through the light forest for about three hours before you reach an obstacle. Up ahead, a rushing stream cuts across the path. The stream is 10 feet wide with a swift current. Ramona asks you to find a way across and help make the crossing safer for the rest of the group.
Jul 10, 2025 12:44 pm
Chiara stands on the banks of the stream and looks out across the water. She turns to the others and says, "I do not believe my magic will be of much use here. but I do have a rope. We could tie off to a tree on this bank and our strongest swimmer could cross with the rope around their waist. Once across, they could tie the other end to a tree on the far bank.". Then, looking to gauge the width of the river, she adds, "Alternatively, our best jumper could probably clear this without getting wet."
Jul 10, 2025 1:29 pm
Agûz simply nods. "I could try to walk across the stream. I believe that I am heavy enough."
Jul 11, 2025 12:56 am
"Good luck, Aguz."
Jul 11, 2025 2:00 am
Chiara looks at Agûz for a moment and then nods. She begins to tie a rope around his torso in a harness. Once she’s finished, she looks at him and says, "Good luck." then she holds the other end of the rope up to the others and says, "The rest of us should hold this."

OOC:
@Ekronak: Alright, this looks like a good time for an action roll from Aguz! It seems that Strength would be the best fit here.
Jul 12, 2025 5:16 am
With not even a word, Agûz takes up his position on the other side of the stream, rope tied securely around his torso-- and begins to ford it.
OOC:
Gonna make a strength roll and then use up a hope to add my "built like a tank" experience for +5 overall!

OOC:
That's a success with hope! Feel free to describe how you successfully make it across and tie off the rope to allow the wagons to cross. :)
