Chapter 1: Exodus

Jun 25, 2025 10:48 am
By the time you saw the first of the Araneae, it was already too late.

The spiderlike creature was just the harbinger of the massive swarm that descended upon the peaceful valley where your village once stood. An unending tide of skittering legs and clacking mouthparts, crafting a relentless tide of jagged glass instead of webs in their wake. The people of the village tried to fight them, tried to turn them away, but their efforts were in vain. Nothing could be done to stop the inexorable creep of glass as it overtook the village.

You did the only thing you could do. You fled. Packing what supplies they could gather in a short amount of time, you and your fellow villagers loaded up a series of wagons and set off before your homes could be completely overrun. You pushed the caravan hard the first few days to put distance between you and the Araneae. Now, at last, you're far enough away to have a moment to stop and catch your breaths.

But what will you do? Where will you go? These questions and more weigh on you as you gather around the campfire...
Jun 26, 2025 6:42 am
A tall goblin (tall for a goblin at least) warms himself on the fire. His hood is pulled up, almost hiding his face from the flickering light from the flames. Next to him rests a bow and quiver. You can see a scar down one part of his face. He is slicing up some roots and adding them to a big pot above the fire. "Don't worry. Fizzle will have your bellies full in no time. Brittlebush roots will add great flavor."
Jun 26, 2025 12:41 pm
Phu fingers is drumming on the large box, the Emberheart Reliquary, that he has brought. Its warm to the touch, and a mystery he hav'nt solved, but its also heavy and compersome.
We need the magical academies to take action against this blight. If not the world will be covered
The pale drakon lists some of the great academies. Perhaps they would also see the value of Emberheart Reliquary.

Thank you Fizzle, for offering dinner
Jun 26, 2025 3:16 pm
A tall, lanky elf sits cross-legged by the fire, the flames flicker against his features as he reflects on the situation. When Fizzle mentions adding Brittlebush roots, Ezail stirs, breaking from his thoughts.

"Oh, sure. Thank you, Fizzle."

His eyes momentarily drift over to Phu drumming on the Emberheart Reliquary, then back to the fire.
Jun 26, 2025 9:52 pm
Standing near the fire is a tall and slender clank woman. She appears to be made of porcelain the color of cream, with delicate blue scroll work glaze decorating her porcelain body head to toe. She wears a sheer robe with high slits for her legs, revealing her smooth and inhuman body. Her joints have gold plating, her eyes are solid white and appear to be alabaster, and atop her head is short, straight, black hair that, upon closer examination, seems to be made of incredibly find smoky glass fibers. In her hand is a long and ornate staff, topped with a stylized dragon's head holding a blue crystal sphere in its teeth. The blue of the sphere is a perfect match for the blue of the scrollwork on her body.

She stares into the fire and, finally, speaks. Her voice is musical but somewhat alien, almost human but not quite there, with a stiffness and artificiality to it that the observant might notice. She says, "We must find the source of the corruption, the nest of these spiders, perhaps a queen, and destroy it."
Jun 27, 2025 6:13 am
In that we are in agreement. But to safely find this source, we need to be able to search unhindred. The spiders prevents that.
Flight of some kind could do it. Or magical scrying. Both abilities that is beyond me

For then umthteen time Phu imagines the content of the Emberheart Reliquary as something usefull - like dragonwings
Jun 27, 2025 2:27 pm
"Or we worry about ourselves first." A deep, yet tinny voice replied, blown through ancient and dust-covered speakers; not his mouth. That, in particular, was sewn shut.

The giant from which the voice issued from was eight feet tall, his head covered in hard and rusting metal. The faint smell of smoke that billowed from the chimneys on his back followed him as he stepped forward, the glow of his singular glass eye gliding from one point of interest to another.

He had been standing quite a ways away from the fire since everything began-- listening, waiting, watching. The fire was an obstacle to him, something to fear. Even now, it only casted a faint light on his face.

Looking around at his companions, he crossed his organic arm with his metal one as he spoke again. "We are burdened. We are best disposed to seek aid."

Chiara's porcelain head tilts to one side and she replies, "Aid? From whom? We cannot rely on strangers to save us, Agûz. It is up to us."
Jun 28, 2025 4:37 pm
"We would most probably be outmatched." Agûz curtly replies, turning his large glowing eye in Chiara's direction.

Then, in the back of the large borg giant's head, the sound of cogs whirring to life are heard.

(OOC: Agûz will use a hope to use "Relic of the Old World" to add +2 to his knowledge roll.)

Rolls

Knowledge roll: Agûz will try to retrieve any information he has on the Araneae. - (2d12+2)

(25) + 2 = 9

Jun 28, 2025 8:16 pm
Ezail eyes look over at Aguz, he nods. "Us, outmatched? Probably. But I'm not going down without a fight." his eyes then glance over to Chiara. "I'm sure there's a civilization that will can accommodate us..."
Jun 30, 2025 1:14 pm
"Who need civilization," Fizzle shrugs. "Much nicer here. Has all we need. Always possible to be one step ahead of swarm."
Jun 30, 2025 1:30 pm
OOC:
Even with the +2 from Agûz's experience, the difficulty for the Knowledge roll is 15 so that's still a failure. And a failure with Fear, so the GM gains 1 Fear (up to 6 from a starting pool of 5) and then the GM gets to make a move.
Agûz racks his partially mechanical brain for any knowledge of the Areneae, but he comes up short. He and the other people of the village had only heard whispers and rumors of their recent appearance in the world, but it always seemed like they were a distant danger. They never expected the arachnids to attack them until it was too late.

As you continue to sit by the fire, a rustle in the nearby underbrush gets your attention. Some of the other members of the caravan have been keeping a watch on the camp, but now you begin to hear cries of alarm coming from the camp's perimeter.

What do you do?
Jun 30, 2025 2:04 pm
"Stir!" Fizzle commands one of the civilians. "If Fizzle come back to burned pot, Fizzle will be quite upset!"

Then he draws his bow and hurries towards the cries of alarm.
Jun 30, 2025 3:37 pm
Chiara turns toward the noise and takes a few steps away from the fire. As an Underborne, she was used to seeing in dim light and darkness, so she peers into the darkness toward the source of the noises. While she does so, she fishes out a torch and prepares to light it.
Jul 1, 2025 6:54 am
Phu stands to face the sound with his staff in hand. He doubt its one of the pale spiders, but he is ready for it if it is.
Jul 1, 2025 4:25 pm
Immediately, Aguz's mechanical hand shifts-- the gears turn, the cogs whir. Where there once were fingers, there now is the unmistakable shape of a hammer head. He turns almost immediately after hearing the sound, the light from his glowing eye intensifying to illuminate the surrounding underbrush. He steps forward instinctively toward the direction that he heard the sound from.

"Be ready." He says simply, raising his hammer arm to sit across his chest in a battle-ready position.
Jul 1, 2025 8:26 pm
Ezail draws his dagger and hand crossbow.
Jul 2, 2025 12:40 pm
In the darkness, Chiara sees something large moving through the underbrush. A horse-sized insect with an armored carapace. As she shouts a warning, it bursts into the clearing, its sharp claws digging at the ground as acidic spittle drips from its mandibles! Based on the cries of the other caravan members, the beast is not alone!

OOC:
Combat begins! There's no set initiative order in Daggerheart, so whoever wants to take the spotlight first may kick things off with an action roll, and we'll go from there.
Jul 2, 2025 12:51 pm
Phu lifts his staff, with a crystal suspended in a dreamcatcher kind of net. A purple crack of energy lances towards the beast
OOC:
That a 14 with hope, for 5 points of damage. I mark a hope on my sheet

Rolls

Greatstaff - (2d12+2, 2d6H1(mag))

2d12+2 : (75) + 2 = 14

2d6H1(mag) : (52) = 5

Jul 2, 2025 1:20 pm
The huge insect reels as the energy leaves a sizzling hole in its carapace.
OOC:
The creature has a Difficulty of 14 so the attack just succeeds. 5 damage is less than the creature's major damage threshold, so it marks 1 HP. Whoever wants to take the spotlight next may do so!
Jul 2, 2025 3:17 pm
Chairs calls out the location of the bug, giving everyone a heads up before it bursts into the camp. Then she breathes deeply, and visible energy begins to swirl around her in a vortex, as she draws ambient magic from the very air around her. Then she points at the big bug and unleashes chaos upon it!
OOC:
ok so I can roll a number of d10s equal to my spell casting bonus, which is 2.
OOC:
EDIT: that’s a miss with Hope.

Ezail aims his hand crossbow at the bug and with a twang from the crossbow—the bolt launches at the bug. After that, he strides into the fray with his dagger ready.

Lumbering forward with an unnatural, mechanical rhythm, Agûz strides forth past all of his companions. The glow from his eye casts a light on the surrounding area as he brings the hammer down, directly on the creature's head.

OOC:
I'll resolve Ezail's attack first, since it was a success. Both Chiara and Aguz failed their rolls, so I'll take a GM turn for each failure.
Ezail's crossbow bolt lodges itself in a chink in the bug's carapace, injuring it. But Chiara's magical blast goes wide, and the big beast skitters aside to dodge Aguz's sword!

The monster rears up and claws at Aguz, scoring a critical hit as it rips through his armored body!

Moments later, the ground beneath your feet rumbles, then a second monstrous insect bursts out of the ground in your midst, hissing in rage! Its eruption threatens to knock you over!
OOC:
The creature marks a HP from Ezail's attack (2 HP marked now). It then makes an attack for each GM turn. It scores a critical hit by rolling a natural 20, so Aguz takes 21 damage, which is enough to be a severe wound (3 HP). I'll spend 1 Fear to take spotlight the second enemy, which marks a Stress to uses Earth Eruption. All creatures within Very Close range (everybody but Aguz) must succeed on an Agility Reaction Roll (Difficulty 14) or be knocked over, making them Vulnerable until they next act. I have 6 Fear left now.

@Furmyr, let's move the spotlight to Fizzle since he has yet to act. After making the reaction roll, he may act now.

Rolls

Claws vs Aguz - (d20+3, d20+3)

d20+3 : (20) + 3 = 23

d20+3 : (6) + 3 = 9

Critical Damage - (12+d12+2)

(7) + 14 = 21

Jul 3, 2025 7:29 am
OOC:
Agûz will use two armor slots to lessen the damage to 1 HP.
Agûz grits his teeth as the large insect cuts into his chest, its chitinous talons causing the ancient armor to begin to rip into his armor... before suddenly and inexplicably stopping. Before it's able to do any major damage, however, the borg's eyes flash red-- and he's able to parry the creature's grinding talon with his hammer arm and riposte it backward. As the second creature emerges from the ground, Agûz looks at the (thankfully shallow) wound in his chest, wondering what caused it to stop... then to Fizzle.
OOC:
Edit: With Phu's move (thanks Rune!), Agûz will no longer use any armor slots to prevent the damage, and will instead just tank the 1 HP.

I personally hate this kind of ability in pbp, but it seems very relevant for @Ekronak
Quote:
Wizard Hope feature:
Not This Time: Spend 3 Hope to force an adversary within Far range to reroll an attack or damage roll.
I have 3 hope and I spend them all to mitigate the crit

Its still at hit, but not a crit hit
So 9 points of damage instead of 21 to Agûz

Rolls

reroll crit attack: Claws vs Aguz - (1d20+3)

(17) + 3 = 20

Jul 3, 2025 7:51 am
Phu magic alters the trajectory of the insect's claws, turning what would have been a serious blow to Aguz into a much less severe impact!
OOC:
Neat! So that's only minor damage instead of severe, 1 HP before any expenditure of armor Aguz may want to use.
Jul 3, 2025 8:00 am
Fizzle stumbles, but is able to keep on his feet as a new creature emerges.

"Bad bug!" he yelps as he jumps back from it. He keeps the newly arrived creature in his field of vision, before firing an arrow at it.
OOC:
Will spend a hope to activate Ranger's Focus on the newly arrived creature.
[ +- ] Ranger Focus
I hope that is high enough that it's a success with fear. Will it be affected by Ranger Focus on the same attack that gave them Ranger Focus?Therby forcing them to mark a Stress already?

Rolls

2d12+2 - Agility - (2d12+2)

(811) + 2 = 21

Shortbow - (2d12+2, 1d6+3(P))

2d12+2 : (412) + 2 = 18

1d6+3(P) : (5) + 3 = 8

Jul 3, 2025 8:12 am
OOC:
That's a success with Fear. It meets the Major Damage threshold of 8, so the newly arrived bug marks 2 HP and 1 Stress from Ranger's Focus and then I'll take a GM turn. My Fear is at 7. I'll spend 1 Fear to activate the new bug twice, since it has the Relentless ability: "The Burrower can be spotlighted up to three times per GM turn. Spend Fear as usual to spotlight them."
Fizzle's arrow impales the big bug in its softer underbelly, leaving a major wound behind! But in response, the insect lashes out at the goblin, ripping into him with its claws.
OOC:
Fizzle is hit twice for 6 and 13 damage. The first is a minor wound (1 HP) and the second is a major wound (2 HP). GM Fear is at 6. Anybody who wishes to take the spotlight may do so. Chiara, Ezail, and Phu still must make an Agility reaction roll before they act.

Rolls

Claws vs Fizzle - (d20+3, d20+3)

d20+3 : (17) + 3 = 20

d20+3 : (17) + 3 = 20

Damage - (d12+2, d12+2)

d12+2 : (4) + 2 = 6

d12+2 : (11) + 2 = 13

Jul 3, 2025 6:10 pm
Both strikes hit Fizzle's armor, protecting him a little.
OOC:
Will spend a point of armor on both attacks, negating the first and turning the second to 1 hp

OOC:
Indeed! That’s 3 HP marked, 5 total now for the second creature!
The magical energy blasts a huge hole in the burrowing insect’s side! Its acidic blood explodes outward, showering those nearby!
OOC:
Acid Bath: When the Burrower takes Severe Damage, all creatures within Close range take 1d10 physical damage as they are bathed in its acidic blood. The splash covers the ground within Very Close range with blood, and all creatures other than the Burrower who move through it take 1d6 physical damage.

Rolls

Ezail stumbles... But manages to recover—just in time to shield himself from being splashed by the bugs acid. He grits his teeth and lashes out with his dagger. The blade manages to slip between the creatures chitin plates—Ezail twists the dagger and rips it free.
OOC:
Critical hit!! I gain a hope and do a total of 15 damage! If I had a stress I would've cleared it. "If your attack roll critically succeeds, your attack deals extradamage! Start with the highest possible value the damage dicecan roll, and then make a damage roll as usual, adding it tothat value."

Ezail shoves his dagger up into the bug's throat and twists, slicing it clean open! He steps back as the multi-legged monster collapses to the ground, thrashing and spurting acidic blood from the fatal wound in its death throes!

Meanwhile, Aguz swings his hammer into the side of the other bug's head, cracking its carapace. Sizzling blood splashes all over the half-giant.
OOC:
Both bugs mark 3 HP. That's enough to kill the the second one that had emerged. The one Aguz is fighting marks 3 HP, now down 5 total. Aguz takes 3 damage from Acid Bath.

It would seem, for now, that the threat is over...
Jul 4, 2025 10:31 am
Agûz stares at the mess arrayed before him, the gears powering his eyes whirring as he kneels down to examine it. His expression still impassive despite the acid actively burning into his skin, he reaches out with his mechanical hand to inspect the bug. The cogs whir in his head again as he brings a piece of flesh up to his eye, before looking down at the shape of the creature he just vanquished. Has he ever faced these kinds of things before, in the distant past?

Chiara deftly avoids the worst of the acid, but her sheer robe gets hit. Despite looking flimsy and gauzy, it is surprisingly resilient and only takes minor damage.

When Agûz begins to examine the squished bug, Chiara looks on, wondering what foul magic created such a thing.
Jul 4, 2025 12:30 pm
Aguz has dim memories of battles against similar foes as these. In the vernacular, they are known as "acid burrowers." They generally avoid heavily settled areas like cities, but their predilection for livestock and humanoid flesh ensures that the creatures do not remain in the deep wilderness for long. Despite their fearsome nature, they are just beasts and are not servants of some other malevolent force.
Jul 4, 2025 2:30 pm
Ezail reloads his hand crossbow—he breathes heavily, his body coming down from the adrenaline rush of battle. He sheaths his weapons—then—he looks at the group and smirks. "Well, nothing beats a little exercise before dinner, eh?"
Jul 4, 2025 3:07 pm
Phu takes forth a role of leather, that contains different magical tools, and some medical equipment.
Let me see your injuries
Ezail Vianu knows that Phu's healing services was one of the main reasons the gangs left him alone. He never refused a patient - except the one who had attacked him. Phu had been standing next to Frank while he bled out. 3 days earlier Frank at gutpunched Phu out of spite, but now he was dying. Anyone who approached Frank to help him got a staredown from Phu, and then they agreed that Frank had been a barstard all along, and would not be missed.

"Dinner!" Fizzle suddenly exclaims as Ezail mentions it. He hurries back.

"If the pot is burned..." he mutters, but is surprised to find it still eatable.

He takes a small spoon out of a pocket and takes a taste of the stew. "Almost perfection."

He looks over at where they fought the creatures and contemplates if it is edible, but shakes his head, nope.
Jul 5, 2025 4:08 am
Agûz makes no indication of having heard Phu or the rest of his companions. Instead, he continues kneeling beside the creature, inspecting the piece of flesh in his hand and getting lost in thought. He shakes himself out his reverie after a few moments, and turns to address Chiara. The light newly cast on his face from the campfire exposes the muscle-deep acid burn on his cheek, which he has made no indication of noticing.

"Acid burrowers." Agûz says simply, his eye meeting hers. "We seem to be getting into some dangerous territory. We will have to make haste."
Jul 7, 2025 5:26 am
Chiara nods as Agûz names the creatures and suggests they hurry. She too does not want to tarry, or have to face such creatures again soon. But that will have to wait until they have broken camp.
Jul 8, 2025 12:31 pm
Fortunately, Aguz knows that acid burrowers don't congregate in large numbers. These two were likely a mated pair. Additionally, their role as apex predators means there likely won't be any other dangerous beasts in this area. The campsite should be safe now.

Indeed, the night passes without incident. In the morning, the caravan prepares to head out again. The caravan master, a middle-aged human woman named Ramona, approaches you. "We'd best get moving if we are to stay ahead of the spiders. But we could use some advice on which way to go."

There are two likely villages nearby that you can head towards:

Bramble Hollow is the closer choice. It is two days' travel away. Bramble Hollow is a quiet hamlet nestled in a dense thicket of trees at the edge of the Sparrowfen Marshes. Known for its herbalists and hunters, the village has a self-reliant population and sturdy palisades grown from magically-reinforced living wood. However, it's a small community with just enough resources for itself. A large caravan may strain their food stores and goodwill. Also, the village elders are wary of newcomers, and gaining their trust could be challenging.

Thornharbor is more distant, about six days' travel away. Thornharbor is a bustling river-trade village built around a fortified stone bridge spanning the River Velm. It serves as a minor trade hub, protected by a local militia and a charter from the Duke of Redmere. In addition to strong defenses, Thornharbor has hosted displaced groups before and may have the capacity or policies to absorb refugees. However, the road to Thornharbor passes through open fields and a narrow pass, which are dangerous terrain if enemies are near. And if others have also fled the destruction caused by the Araenae, Thornharbor may already be stretched thin.
Jul 8, 2025 3:44 pm
I say we head for Thornharbor. I know its further way, but it opens for so many more oppertunities
Phu sits with Chiara and Prepare for tomorrow, looking at skeched maps

Chiara agrees with Phu, saying, "Yes, I would rather take our chances there, because it is safer long-term, and gives access tot he river, should we wish to travel even further. We will be vulnerable on the road, however, so we should do what we can to prepare for any eventuality."

That night at camp, Chiara discusses with Phu her plans for if they are attacked on the road.
Jul 8, 2025 3:55 pm
"Thanks for the help, Phu. I agree—We should go to Thornharbor."
Jul 9, 2025 4:46 am
Agûz silently tends to his wounds as the rest of the group discusses their destination. Looking up, his voice comes clearly through the speakers. "It is a wise choice. I shall second it."
Jul 9, 2025 2:15 pm
"Fizzle takes you wherever you want to," the goblin says with a shrug while repairing his armor, that took some acid damage in the fight.

Waking up the next morning, it seems a night of rest was just what he needed, and the small wound that made it through the armor is already healing well.
Jul 10, 2025 11:39 am
Ramona nods and moves to tell the other members of the caravan about your decision. Soon, the camp has been struck and the wagons are packed up and ready to go.

You travel through the light forest for about three hours before you reach an obstacle. Up ahead, a rushing stream cuts across the path. The stream is 10 feet wide with a swift current. Ramona asks you to find a way across and help make the crossing safer for the rest of the group.
Jul 10, 2025 12:44 pm
Chiara stands on the banks of the stream and looks out across the water. She turns to the others and says, "I do not believe my magic will be of much use here. but I do have a rope. We could tie off to a tree on this bank and our strongest swimmer could cross with the rope around their waist. Once across, they could tie the other end to a tree on the far bank.". Then, looking to gauge the width of the river, she adds, "Alternatively, our best jumper could probably clear this without getting wet."
Jul 10, 2025 1:29 pm
Agûz simply nods. "I could try to walk across the stream. I believe that I am heavy enough."
Jul 11, 2025 12:56 am
"Good luck, Aguz."

Chiara looks at Agûz for a moment and then nods. She begins to tie a rope around his torso in a harness. Once she’s finished, she looks at him and says, "Good luck." then she holds the other end of the rope up to the others and says, "The rest of us should hold this."
Jul 11, 2025 10:07 am
OOC:
@Ekronak: Alright, this looks like a good time for an action roll from Aguz! It seems that Strength would be the best fit here.
Jul 12, 2025 5:16 am
With not even a word, Agûz takes up his position on the other side of the stream, rope tied securely around his torso-- and begins to ford it.
OOC:
Gonna make a strength roll and then use up a hope to add my "built like a tank" experience for +5 overall!

Rolls

Strength roll to ford the river - (2d12+5)

(112) + 5 = 18

Jul 14, 2025 12:23 pm
OOC:
That's a success with hope! Feel free to describe how you successfully make it across and tie off the rope to allow the wagons to cross. :)
Jul 15, 2025 11:30 am
Water courses past Agûz's body, nearly carrying him away-- but he pays it no mind. He was made for this.

The water sinks him till the surface sticks up to his chin. As his legs find purchase on the riverbed, the gears that make up his arms whir and whine, yet his face remains impassive. When he comes up on the other side, he turns wordlessly to the rest on the riverbank, and then ties the rope around a nearby tree.

"It is done." He says simply.
Jul 15, 2025 3:19 pm
Now that Agûz has run a guide line, Chiara wrap the rope under her arms and through her bent elbows, making it secure, and lowers herself into the water. She inches down the rope, making sure never to loosen her grip on it, as she crosses the raging river.
Jul 15, 2025 7:50 pm
Phu follows Chiara into the water, clutching the line. Where the water is most troublesome Phu pauses
I have an idea, It might be good one. It might be a bad one
He takes a deep breath and and cone of cold is spewed from his mouth. He is trying to form a block of ice that can give them an extra stepping stone or anchor point.
[ +- ] Elemental Breath: (ice)

Rolls

ice damage - (1d8)

(4) = 4

Jul 16, 2025 9:57 am
Fizzle will shimmy across the river on the rope. "Good idea, the ice block can hold the caravan and we can pull it across," Fizzle tells Phu.
Jul 17, 2025 10:47 am
Between the rope and the icy platforms Phu creates, you are able to get the wagons across the stream without incident. You resume your journey on the far side.

Dark clouds have begun to gather in the skies as the day wears on. They rumble ominously, foreshadowing a powerful storm to come. A slow drizzle quickly turns into a deluge as heavy rain pours down and the rumble becomes a roar as thunder booms! Lightning crackles and flashes in the clouds. You need to find shelter, and quickly!
Jul 17, 2025 1:08 pm
Chiara passively ignores the water as it strikes and rolls off her porcelain skin, leaving her largely unbothered. Her sheer robe also seems not to absorb the water to any significant degree.. Nevertheless, she says, "My body may not be affected by rain, but lightning is as dangerous otherwise me as it is to anyone. We should find shelter.". She scans the area, looking for overhangs, caves, etc, or anything else that could serve as shelter.
Jul 17, 2025 3:07 pm
No, we are not camping under trees. Not in this storm

Phu is not an outdoorsman, but he has theoretical knowledge to suggest a place that will drain and not be exposed to lightning.
OOC:
That is a 9 with hope to find a good spot for a camp.
[ +- ] Honed Expertise:
well I failed my Honed Expertise roll, so I pay my 1 hope to use expertise. But I get it back as I rolled with hope

Rolls

Knowledge Is Power - Kno - (2d12+4)

(32) + 4 = 9

Honed Expertise: - (1d6)

(4) = 4

Jul 17, 2025 3:51 pm
"At this point, a tree would be better cover than nothing." Ezail focuses and looks around for a good spot to hide, and camp.
OOC:
I'll spend a hope to use my Eyes Like A Hawk experience.

Rolls

Instinct roll - (2d12+2)

(1012) + 2 = 24

Jul 18, 2025 10:37 am
OOC:
Phu rolls a failure with hope, while Ezail rolls a success with fear.
Phu wracks his brain, but is unable to recall the terrain enough to suggest a good place for the caravan to hole up. The effort distracts him from his surroundings, though, and he finds himself struggling a bit to navigate the terrain as the ground gets muddy and treacherous.
OOC:
Phu, mark a Stress.
***

Ezail keeps his eyes peeled. There, in the distance! He spies a large cave opening under a rocky outcropping that is big enough to provide the whole caravan with shelter from the storm.

Unfortunately, as you get closer, it becomes clear that the cave is occupied. Two hulking cave ogres and their pet bear emerge! The ogres howl and stomp their feet as they raise massive clubs, and the thick-furred bear growls and bares its teeth and claws!
OOC:
Combat begins! Anybody who wants to get things started may act. The GM has 7 Fear.
Jul 18, 2025 12:31 pm
Chiara says, "It seems our shelter is occupied. Hmm, time to do something about that."

She slowly brings her hands together, drawing energy from the air around her, which forms into a crackling ball of warbling light. Then, with a thrust, she releases it at the two ogres!
OOC:
Unleashing chaos at the first ogre, and marking one stress to manipulate magic, so I can deal the damage to a second target as well.

EDIT: That's a 17 with Fear (alas), dealing 18 magic damage to each!

Rolls

Spellcheck - (2d12+2)

(411) + 2 = 17

Damage vs ogre on a hit - (2d10)

(810) = 18

Jul 18, 2025 12:43 pm
OOC:
Both ogres mark 3 HP!
The chaotic magic burns the ogres, wounding both of them badly! In response, the giants fly into a rampaging fury, stomping towards you with murderous intent!
OOC:
As a reaction to marking 2 or more HP, the ogres move to a point within Close range. They would deal damage to targets in their path but fortunately nobody is there yet. Fear at 8. I'll spotlight the bear, which uses its turn to move into melee range. Then spending 2 Fear to spotlight each ogre. The ogres have the Ramp Up feature: "You must spend a Fear to spotlight the Ogre. While spotlighted, they can make their standard attack against all targets within range." Fear is at 6 now.
The bear lopes forward, getting into melee range of the biggest target: Aguz! The ogres wade into your midst, swinging their clubs indiscriminately. Aguz manages to avoid harm, but the rest of you take hits, especially Chiara, who is pummeled with bone-crushing force!
OOC:
Ezail is hit once for 8 damage. Fizzle is hit once for 6 damage. Phu is hit twice for 3 damage and 6 damage. Chiara is hit twice, once critically, for 22(!) damage and 6 damage. This is all direct damage, which means it cannot be reduced by armor!

As the Ogres charge in and rampage, striking Chiara with their clubs, a shimmering shield of energy erupt from her, deflecting some of the damage.
OOC:
Chiara activates her Rune Ward! Spending Hope to reduce the incoming damage by 1d8. That reduces the incoming damage from 21 and 6 to 14 and 4. I will mark armor

OOC:
@Drgwen, the ogres deal direct damage, so you can't use armor to reduce it. I'll activate the bear from Phu's success with fear. The ogre he hit marks 1 HP, 4 HP marked now.
Phu's magical blast further wounds an ogre. The bear rears up before Aguz, attempting to bite him, but his armored body proves too tough for its teeth!
OOC:
The bear marks 1 Stress to use its Bite attack but it misses so there is no effect. GM Fear at 7.

Rolls

Bite vs Aguz - (d20+1)

(5) + 1 = 6

OOC:
Direct damage? Oh I didn't know what that is. OK, I'll mark HP instead, then.

OOC:
Don't worry, I didn't either until today! :)

Fizzle groans in pain as he's hit. He backs away from his foe and fires an arrow at the closest Ogre.
OOC:
I have a danger sense power, once per rest I can force you to reroll an attack against me. I will use it on the next attack that hits me.

And if I hit I will activate my Ruthless Predator power.

Edit: I doubt that's a hit. But at least a failure with hope.

Clenching his jaw, Agûz instantly transforms his mechanical arm into his hammer. Turning to his companions, he bellows "Behind me." before wading into the thick of the enemy-- then unleashing a deadly whirlwind as he spins in a circle to hit the bear first... and the ogres beside it.
OOC:
Gonna activate Unstoppable, and then while the bear and the ogres are in very close range, Agûz will use a hope to activate Whirlwind to strike the bear and then both ogres. If it hits, the ogres will take half damage while the bear gets full.
OOC:
Yeahhh, that's gonna be a 10 with fear against the bear and the ogres!
