I have created a set of "achievements" that the party can earn when they either accomplish something unusual/unlikely or accomplish much over time. For this, I am tracking the progress of the party and of each character (so...much...bookkeeping...!). This is the list of the achievements that the party has earned, as well as placeholders for the ones they haven't "unlocked" or discovered yet.
Each achievement comes with a one-time-use reward: a special benefit that the player can declare they are using in a post to modify an outcome, roll, or interaction, as described in the Achievement. When a PC "earns" an achievement, I will notify the player to add it to their character sheet. Then they can remove it when they've used that benefit.
Achievements are a one-time bonus (meaning that each PC can only earn a given achievement once). Most achievements are for a single PC, but there are some that are earned by multiple PCs doing things in concert with one another (in those cases, the group gets the achievement, and needs to decide as a group when to use the benefit). Most achievements can be earned by any PC, but some achievements are class-specific (meaning that they relate to specific class abilities, and so cannot be earned by PCs of other classes); there are such achievements for every PC class in play.
