Character Creation Rules & Discussion.

Jul 3, 2025 12:20 am
Welcome to the campaign! This is a low-power space adventure inspired by Guardians of the Galaxy, Star Trek, Star War and more—a wild mix of mercenaries, oddballs, and outcasts struggling to get by in a big, messy universe.

Prowlers and Paragon Guidebook

Your character should be a down-on-their-luck scoundrel—someone who’s scraping together credits doing dangerous, weird, or illegal jobs in the galactic fringe. You might be:
A bounty hunter who owes the wrong people money
A smuggler with a stolen ship and a bad reputation
A scavenger with a knack for finding (and stealing) rare tech
A mercenary running from a war they helped start
Or maybe something else that fits the vibe—be creative!

Think Han Solo, Rocket Raccoon, Star-Lord, Faye Valentine, Jayne Cobb, or even Drax. Cool, competent (usually), and full of baggage.

Character Details I Want to See
I’m looking for fleshed-out, story-rich characters, not just numbers. In your character submission, include:

Name & Species (Alien, Human, Android, Tentacle Beast—go wild)
Background – Who are you? What’s your story?
Homeworld – What’s it like? Where are you from?
Talents & Powers – What can you do well?
Crew Role – What job do you fill on the ship? (Pilot, Mechanic, Muscle, Face, Techie, Scientist, etc.)
Enemies or Bounties – Are you wanted? Who hates you and why?
Gear – Any signature item or weapon?
Personality – Sarcastic? Cold? Desperate? Loyal?
The more flavor, the better. This will help us build a crew with chemistry and drama from Day One.

Starting Setup
All players can begin with:
A Space Suit
A Universal Translator
[ +- ] Space Suit

The party starts with a shared spaceship. We'll build it together in Ship & Space Rules. You’ll each have a say in what it’s like—old rustbucket or shiny stolen warship, up to you.

We will take some time and step by step work to build characters together.

Character Creation Step by Step Guide
Power Level: Low | Starting PP: 100 | Power Cap: Rank 10

Step 1: Hero Concept
Start with a clear, exciting idea of your character.
This is your space outlaw identity—the galaxy's next unpredictable hero or anti-hero.

Ask:
What's their role on the crew? (Pilot, bruiser, gunner, medic, sneaky one, etc.)
What species are they? Alien? Human? Synthetic?
What makes them awesome or weird?
What’s their code? Their flaw? Their edge?
Quote:
Example Concept:
Name: Vek "Scorch" Darro
Species: Half-human pyrokinetic
Role: Ship's demolitions expert
Style: Loud, unstable, and loves explosions
Motivation: Blow stuff up until he finds the alien who sold him out
Step 2: Assign Abilities
These represent your character’s raw physical and mental stats.
Start at Rank 2 (Undeveloped)
Each +1 Rank costs 1 PP
Max Rank: 10 (Peak, per Power Cap)

Abilities & Rank Table
Rank Title Description Cost
Rank 1 Impaired Seriously limited
Rank 2 Undeveloped Normal/average (starting value) 0 PP
Rank 3 Developed Better than average +1 PP
Rank 4 Noteworthy Clearly skilled +2 PP
Rank 5 Exceptional Elite human potential +3 PP
Rank 6 Peak Top-tier; best of the best +4 PP

Abilities:
Agility – Reflexes, dodging, aiming
Intellect – Smarts, hacking, science
Might – Raw physical strength
Perception – Awareness, initiative, noticing danger
Toughness – Resistance to pain, endurance
Willpower – Mental strength, focus, guts
Quote:
Sample Allocation (16 PP):

Intellect Rank 3 Developed 1 PP
Might Rank 2 Undeveloped 0 PP
Perception Rank 4 Noteworthy 2 PP
Toughness Rank 3 Developed 1 PP
Willpower Rank 5 Exceptional 3 PP
Total: 9 PP
Step 3: Assign Talents (Skills)
Talents are trained skills, like space piloting, stealth infiltration, or alien gunplay.
Start at Rank 1 (Clueless)
Each +1 Rank costs 1 PP
Max Rank: 10 (Master)

Talent Rank Table
Rank Title Description Cost
Rank 1 Clueless No real training
Rank 2 Unskilled Basic knowledge +1 PP
Rank 3 Proficient Trained/solid +2 PP

Total Talent Cost: 13 PP
Step 4: Powers
This is the most difficult part of character creation.
These define your unique superhuman or alien capabilities.
Ranks max 10 Power Cap
Costs vary by the Power description
Add Pros for cool effects.
Add Cons for drawbacks.

🔹 Examples for a Guardians-style campaign:
[ +- ] Blast (Rank 10) = 10 PP
[ +- ] Teleportation : 1 Mile (Rank 6) + Pro Portal (+2) = 6+2=8PP
[ +- ] Invisibility(9) + Limited: Only in darkness(-2) =9-2=7 PP
Total: 25 PP

Step 5: Perks & Flaws
Add flavor, edges, complications, and drama to your character.

Perks
These are narrative advantages, special resources, or meta-style traits that make your character cooler, more connected, or unique.
Cost varies by perk description
Quote:
📝 Sample Perks
[ +- ] Contacts (Explosives Dealer in the Red Markets)
[ +- ] Fame (Former starship arena demolitionist)
Flaws
Flaws are physical, mental, or social hindrances that make your hero feel real and generate Resolve when roleplayed during scenes.
When a Flaw creates a meaningful obstacle for your character in a scene—and you choose to let it happen—you earn 1 Resolve (max 1 per Flaw per scene).
Must take at least 1; max of 3
Quote:
Sample Flaws
Frenzy (Loses control when injured or insulted)
Enemy (Former employer—Salvon Corp—wants him silenced)
Fear (Vacuum) (Refuses to spacewalk or be in zero-G unless forced)
Step 6: Motivation & Backstory
Bring it to life:
Origin: Exiled? Escaped experiment? Born into the stars?
Motivation: Revenge, redemption, rebellion, riches, or wanderlust?
Vibe: Quirky? Stoic? Reckless?
How do they fit in a ragtag space crew?
Quote:
Example:
Vek "Scorch" Darro once worked for a corporate demolition crew until a mining job went wrong and activated latent pyrokinetic abilities. Betrayed and nearly killed, he now burns his way across the stars looking for the bastard who left him to die.
Step 7: Final Build Review
Make sure you’ve got everything:

✅ No Power, Ability, or Talent above Rank 10
✅ Abilities start at Rank 2 (Undeveloped)
✅ Talents start at Rank 1 (Clueless)
✅ Perks = 1 PP each

@Fyndhal, @Xgamersma, @aquamarine

This is where we will discuss character creation ideas.
I will also be making threads for each of your characters.
We will chat here to start about your basic character idea.
Who do you want to be on this 3 man crew.

A few quick questions:
* There's a contradiction in the write up. Under the powers section, it says 10d is the cap, but in the Final Build Review it says the cap is 6d. Which is correct?
* Are you using the standard Gear Limit or are you varying it at all?
* Are Equipment modifications allowed?
Jul 11, 2025 1:38 am
Should be 10d Cap.

I was planning on using Standard Gear Limits. Do you think we should change it?

What do you mean by Equipment Mods?
OOC:
Please remember I have played P&P a little and am trying to DM it for my first time. Be Gental and Kind :)
Jul 11, 2025 1:44 am
Standard Gear limit is fine. I would have suggested altering it if the cap had been 6d, though. :)

Equipment Mods - See CUSTOM GEAR on page 93. Things like Accurate, Hardened, Masterpiece, etc.

As far as characters go, I'm looking at "Ships Pilot" as my role. If you're familiar with the character "Nikki" from the original Guardians of the Galaxy, I'd basically building on expy of her, albeit not quite as much of a one note wonder. I'll have first pass on a sheet ready sometime tonight.
Jul 11, 2025 2:23 am
Equipment mods should be ok.
The few games I played it was OK as long as your roll is not above the cap.

Nikki was in the Guardians of the Galaxy game I played a while ago.
She was one of the BBG at the end due to some entity possessing her and a whole cult thing

Nice! That's pretty cool.
Jul 11, 2025 2:46 am
It was the Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy
Nikki was Starlord's daughter and turns into the Matriarch.

I am heading to bed. I will catch up with everything tomorrow and answer questions.

Agneya

I'll be happy to make changes and/or answer questions.

So, I was thinking of being the tech guy, my concept is that he comes from a human slave community, the aliens in that planet bought all the human slaves they could since they were not too intelligent or too strong, perfect for labor, he was born and grew in that community, life was hard but his parents taught him to survive, even with only basic resources at hand he was able to learn how things worked, he started noticing patterns, then, when he was around 16 years old a failed escape from one of the slaves resulted in the overlords punishing the community, he was able to hide and survive the massacre, but his parents were killed, and he was left with a hopeless future, but he decided this was not going to end like this, he spend 2 years recollecting pieces and learning, and, while he had to do forced labor while building it, he was able to create an armor, it increased his strenght but more importantly gave him some protection, and then using it he was able to liberate his community and fight back the overlords, now, a few years later he leads the resistance in that planet, his goal is to free every human community that is still oppressed by the overlords, but a resistance requires resources, now, he has an idea of how to end the war with the overlords, he needs to build a device able to shut down any defenses it targets, so he decided to leave the resistance, upgrade his suit, and go explore in hopes of finding the pieces (or credits to get them).
Is that good?

Sorry for the long backstory lol
Jul 11, 2025 2:40 pm
So we got a Fiery Captain and a Robosuit Techy.

Works for me.

@Fyndhal Your sheet looks fine to me. Can you transfer into a character sheet below? We can integrate it into this site. I can help with coding (A little) if needed.
An idea for you race stuff, you could be a half Pyroxi Half something else. Would explain your fiery nature. OR you can come up with something different yourself.

@Xgamersma Do you want to be enslaved by any of the races in the The Galactic Codex?

Some of these chats I want to move into your Private threads to keep them organized better.

So, I want to be clear, we start with 100 hero points on top of the baseline ranks of abilities and talents right?
Jul 11, 2025 4:00 pm
Correct.
It allows you to customize your character a little bit more IMO.

Her backstory is outlined on the sheet. Quick rundown:
She and a group of others are genetically modified humans created by an evil spacefaring Megacorporation and essentially used as slave labor. There was a revolt during which she stole a ship and escaped. Used the ship for piracy until captured. Was put on trial, but was set free on a technicality. Ended up taking work on this POS Freighter to avoid bounty hunters and make a living.

I'll get her transferred to the template sometime today.

Another question: Are we using any of the optional "Gritty" rules? I'm not advocating for or against, just checking.
Jul 11, 2025 11:40 pm
hi hello, i am planning on playing an alien from a planet completely covered in ocean. im most likely gonna make him the bruiser of the team. not stupid like most bruisers, just uneducated since im thinking his planet doesnt have any of the underwater civilization tropes like being super technologically advanced or smart. i was gonna make him a slave worker since they dont have any advanced machinery or anything to keep everything running but i might change that now. we’ll see. i’ll have a sheet drawn out shortly.
Jul 11, 2025 11:49 pm
Actually, that's crazy, we all thought of a slave worker backstory
