Chapter 3.2 - Return to the Golden Grain Inn

Jul 11, 2025 4:48 am
The party waits out the day in the Dim Forest. The day is hot and humid despite the shade. The wait is long and tedious.
OOC:
Each character gains the benefit of a short rest and consumes another ration/food portion.
The hours creep by. In the distance, you hear the roar of a large predator, but there is no answering challenge and nothing dangerous appears.

Finally, the light begins to fade as the sun descends to the horizon. Chase leads the way to a place to ford the Realstream, and the party makes it across before true night has fallen. The night is warm and the forest thick with the sound of twilight creatures as the heroes proceed through the undergrowth to Cecily's Road. They then proceed east in the darkness.

Chase slows, and the group confers: how will they proceed? Do they produce light for the ranger and the others who cannot see, or does Aanbo, Morton, and Theran lead the rest of them by the hands down the dark road to the outskirts of Orlane? The moon will rise in a couple more hours, and once it does, the party will be able to navigate the village at night as long as they are out of the Dim Forest where the moonlight does not penetrate.

Arya follows silently in the middle of the party, nervous about what devilry they will find in this village.

OOC:
Unless the others choose light, or have another plan, Theran will use his coil of rope to lead the party members who can't see. Just have everyone line up and hold it with their left hand at regular intervals. They just follow allong.

OOC:
I assumed we want to stay under cover, a torch or light spell might not be good. :)

Aanbo appreciates Theran's offer of rope for those that need assistance in the dark. While Theran leads them, Aanbo follows behind to ensure that nobody becomes lost.

Myrtha grabbed the rope eagerly with her shield-holding left hand, and walked at the pace set by Theran. Her heavy coat of scale mail is not quiet, but she does her best to move without causing too much of a ruckus.
OOC:
Sorry for the abominable faults; had the French spell-checker on and didn’t realise it while shooting a quick message.

Chase will take the rope and follow along with his long sword at the ready.

Seeing that Morton has opted to stay on the rope to help everyone, Aanbo hustles ahead to act as point and lead the way.

Despite their expectations of resistance, the party meets no gate or blockade as they descend Cecily's Road from the top of the rise overlooking the village of Orlane. It is still dark, though a faint glimmer on the distant forest horizon suggests that it won't be long before the moon rises.

Leading them confidently in front, sharpest-eared Theran hears a group of people talking just as the heroes draw even with the first buildings along the road. He taps Aanbo on the shoulder, and then the dwarf hears it, too. Seconds afterward, the party sees a glow in the distance, a light approaching from the lake's shore to the east. As the light advances, the party makes out a group of eight or ten people with lanterns ambling west toward the party along Cecily's Road. They don't seem particularly alert, and have not noticed the party yet. Each is armed with at least some kind of pole arm: a staff, a spear, a glaive...it's hard to tell with the swinging lanterns.

Each of you sees this, and can decide for yourselves (unless you have a silent way of communicating in the dark) whether you are going to Hide behind the closest structure, run ahead for the Golden Grain Inn, or do something else.
If you opt to Hide, roll a Stealth check.
If you opt to run, roll an Athletics check.

Myrtha saw the approaching lanterns with apprehension. These seemed like a mishmash of militia, volunteers and maybe a couple of professionals. She hesitated briefly.
OOC:
I need a bit of clarification: options are (a) hide right here, behind the closest buildings in town or (b) rush towards the incoming group, hoping to get to (and behind) the golden grain inn before being detected?

I’m just trying to make sure that running doesn’t mean immediately alerting the villager’s group. Of course, if she runs she might have some nasty surprise around the Inn. Her odds of stealthing well aren’t great.

Arya will follow what Aando decides.

Rolls

Athletics - (1d20+3)

(16) + 3 = 19

hide - (1d20+1)

(11) + 1 = 12

Chase hearing seeing what is going on knows it is better not to be detected so will opt to hide behind the closest structure.

Rolls

Stealth - (1d20+3)

(20) + 3 = 23

OOC:
You could run someplace else; I just mentioned the Golden Grain Inn as that was the group's intended destination.

You also are not limited to those options - I just presented those as two (likely) possibilities.

You can refer to the Orlane map; the party is at the first fork in the lower left. The Golden Grain Inn is the green rectangle marked "1" on the map. The torch-bearers are between the purple building to the east of the Inn and the green building across the Road from it.

OOC:
So we are just west of the weaver's shop?

A picture is worth more words than I can effectively use to describe the two groups' locations.

The party's current location is marked with the STAR.
The other group's current location is marked with a spear-toting guard token.
Reminder: private establishments are PURPLE, public businesses are GREEN, and outbuildings are BROWN.
On this close-up:
1 is the Golden Grain Inn.
2 is the bridge across the Realstream River.
3 is the Weaver's shop.
4 is the Jeweler's shop.
5 is the Slumbering Serpent Inn.
8 is the Mill.

The several buildings that are not labeled are blank because the party has not investigated them and does not know who or what lives/works there.

OOC:
I've seen actions for Chase and a conditional action from Arya. @CancerMan @WhtKnt @WanderOne @matmaisan @MaJunior - please post what your characters are doing (or ask for more information if you need it).

Morton is on the ropes, so it matters what the others on such are going to do.
Jul 13, 2025 4:32 pm
Aanbo inwardly shares Myrtha's unspoken concern of what might lie around the corner to the north, but he also realizes that the size of the Dungeon Buster group risks discovery no matter where they might hide; plus the villagers know the area more than the Dungeon Busters, and probably know where to look.

"We're almost there," he whispers. "Let's get to the inn and out of view before the patrol arrives, and we can conceal ourselves with the fog while Ember tries to open the door."

Knowing that he gains more ground despite his short stature, Aanbo hustles ahead. If there is another patrol to the north, he'll be the first to see them and could potentially double-back to warn the others.

Rolls

Athletics - (1d20+1)

(2) + 1 = 3

Jul 13, 2025 6:05 pm
Myrtha nods at Aanbo and then bursts into a sprint heading full speed east and then turning north as soon as as she can discern the shape of the Golden Grain. She will first stop on the northern side of the cellar entrance and get her bearings and, assuming she remains undetected, move more slowly to the NW corner of the Inn, to see if there are any discernible threats in the buildings backyard.

Rolls

Athletics - (1d20+5)

(4) + 5 = 9
