Chapter 3.2 - Return to the Golden Grain Inn

Jul 11, 2025 4:48 am
The party waits out the day in the Dim Forest. The day is hot and humid despite the shade. The wait is long and tedious.
OOC:
Each character gains the benefit of a short rest and consumes another ration/food portion.
The hours creep by. In the distance, you hear the roar of a large predator, but there is no answering challenge and nothing dangerous appears.

Finally, the light begins to fade as the sun descends to the horizon. Chase leads the way to a place to ford the Realstream, and the party makes it across before true night has fallen. The night is warm and the forest thick with the sound of twilight creatures as the heroes proceed through the undergrowth to Cecily's Road. They then proceed east in the darkness.

Chase slows, and the group confers: how will they proceed? Do they produce light for the ranger and the others who cannot see, or does Aanbo, Morton, and Theran lead the rest of them by the hands down the dark road to the outskirts of Orlane? The moon will rise in a couple more hours, and once it does, the party will be able to navigate the village at night as long as they are out of the Dim Forest where the moonlight does not penetrate.
Jul 11, 2025 11:26 am
Arya follows silently in the middle of the party, nervous about what devilry they will find in this village.

OOC:
Unless the others choose light, or have another plan, Theran will use his coil of rope to lead the party members who can't see. Just have everyone line up and hold it with their left hand at regular intervals. They just follow allong.

OOC:
I assumed we want to stay under cover, a torch or light spell might not be good. :)

Aanbo appreciates Theran's offer of rope for those that need assistance in the dark. While Theran leads them, Aanbo follows behind to ensure that nobody becomes lost.

Jul 11, 2025 7:50 pm
Myrtha grabbed the rope eagerly with her shield-holding left hand, and walked at the pace set by Theran. Her heavy coat of scale mail is not quiet, but she does her best to move without causing too much of a ruckus.
OOC:

Chase will take the rope and follow along with his long sword at the ready.
Jul 12, 2025 2:44 am
Seeing that Morton has opted to stay on the rope to help everyone, Aanbo hustles ahead to act as point and lead the way.
Jul 12, 2025 3:31 am
Despite their expectations of resistance, the party meets no gate or blockade as they descend Cecily's Road from the top of the rise overlooking the village of Orlane. It is still dark, though a faint glimmer on the distant forest horizon suggests that it won't be long before the moon rises.

Leading them confidently in front, sharpest-eared Theran hears a group of people talking just as the heroes draw even with the first buildings along the road. He taps Aanbo on the shoulder, and then the dwarf hears it, too. Seconds afterward, the party sees a glow in the distance, a light approaching from the lake's shore to the east. As the light advances, the party makes out a group of eight or ten people with lanterns ambling west toward the party along Cecily's Road. They don't seem particularly alert, and have not noticed the party yet. Each is armed with at least some kind of pole arm: a staff, a spear, a glaive...it's hard to tell with the swinging lanterns.

Each of you sees this, and can decide for yourselves (unless you have a silent way of communicating in the dark) whether you are going to Hide behind the closest structure, run ahead for the Golden Grain Inn, or do something else.
If you opt to Hide, roll a Stealth check.
If you opt to run, roll an Athletics check.
Jul 12, 2025 5:22 am
Myrtha saw the approaching lanterns with apprehension. These seemed like a mishmash of militia, volunteers and maybe a couple of professionals. She hesitated briefly.
OOC:
I need a bit of clarification: options are (a) hide right here, behind the closest buildings in town or (b) rush towards the incoming group, hoping to get to (and behind) the golden grain inn before being detected?

I’m just trying to make sure that running doesn’t mean immediately alerting the villager’s group. Of course, if she runs she might have some nasty surprise around the Inn. Her odds of stealthing well aren’t great.

Arya will follow what Aando decides.

OOC:
You could run someplace else; I just mentioned the Golden Grain Inn as that was the group's intended destination.

You also are not limited to those options - I just presented those as two (likely) possibilities.

You can refer to the Orlane map; the party is at the first fork in the lower left. The Golden Grain Inn is the green rectangle marked "1" on the map. The torch-bearers are between the purple building to the east of the Inn and the green building across the Road from it.

A picture is worth more words than I can effectively use to describe the two groups' locations.

The party's current location is marked with the STAR.
The other group's current location is marked with a spear-toting guard token.
Reminder: private establishments are PURPLE, public businesses are GREEN, and outbuildings are BROWN.
On this close-up:
1 is the Golden Grain Inn.
2 is the bridge across the Realstream River.
3 is the Weaver's shop.
4 is the Jeweler's shop.
5 is the Slumbering Serpent Inn.
8 is the Mill.

The several buildings that are not labeled are blank because the party has not investigated them and does not know who or what lives/works there.

Morton is on the ropes, so it matters what the others on such are going to do.
Jul 13, 2025 4:32 pm
Aanbo inwardly shares Myrtha's unspoken concern of what might lie around the corner to the north, but he also realizes that the size of the Dungeon Buster group risks discovery no matter where they might hide; plus the villagers know the area more than the Dungeon Busters, and probably know where to look.

"We're almost there," he whispers. "Let's get to the inn and out of view before the patrol arrives, and we can conceal ourselves with the fog while Ember tries to open the door."

Knowing that he gains more ground despite his short stature, Aanbo hustles ahead. If there is another patrol to the north, he'll be the first to see them and could potentially double-back to warn the others.

She will first stop on the northern side of the cellar entrance and get her bearings and, assuming she remains undetected, move more slowly to the NW corner of the Inn, to see if there are any discernible threats in the buildings backyard.

As the party catches sight of the spear-toting patrol ahead, they scramble to get to safety. Unfortunately, they have different ideas about safety, as they dash in different directions. Aanbo turns to whisper directions, but some of the party have already let go of the rope and disappeared into hiding. Following Aanbo's whispered suggestion, the others run down the street. After a beat, Aanbo, Theran, and Morton look at each other, realizing at the same instant that the people who are running toward the Inn (and the patrol!) can't see well in the dark. They sprint after them. While they catch up quickly, Arya's long lithe legs nearly outdistance the others, and Aanbo has to lunge to grab her and turn her onto the north street. Unfortunately, the big group is not quite fast enough, and the Orlane patrol detects some sound or motion down the road: a glint of metal, a scuff of a boot, or something similar. "Hey! There's someone over there!" one of them shouts, and they break into a run toward the party, shadows dancing crazily as the lanterns swing to and fro. "You won't get away, murderer!"

Chase lurks in a shadow and averts his eyes from the light as the patrol runs past his hiding place...and keeps running. "Over here!" There is much commotion as the members of the patrol call to one another. "I think I saw something!"

Arriving in the sheltered space between the barn and the Golden Grain Inn, Aanbo and Theran leave the others with Morton. Morton can keep a watch over them with his darkvision, but they alone know the layout of the village and are able to see their way without producing more light. "Me, too!" comes the distant shout of a patrolman. Trusting that the others are waiting for their help, the monk and the druid begin hunting for the scattered Dungeon Busters in the darkness, hoping to find the remaining dark-blind ones and lead them to their meeting place.

"No, this way!" comes the faint shout of another patrolman. Soon afterward, the other heroes arrive silently: the druid leading the rogue, the monk leading the ranger along the wall from the other direction. The voices of the patrol are moving further away still.
"Hey, help me here!"
"You're imagining it!"

Looking at the back door of the Inn, the heroes with darkvision see that the opening has been hastily boarded up. The nails could probably be pried out pretty easily, but the sound might carry a long way in the dark. "I got him! I got him!" Still, the Orlane patrol group seems to be making a lot of noise on its own, and probably wouldn't hear.
"That's ME, idiot!"
"We'd better report in..."

The party waits for a while longer and the sound of the Orlane patrol fades as it moves even further away. Quickly checking the cellar door, the darkvision-equipped PCs realize that it, too, has been boarded up.
Jul 14, 2025 5:28 am
Aanbo nods. Best to check if the front door is also boarded up before trying to remove the boards. He asks Jonel how much preparation is needed to bring the concealing fog, and if there's a way to be ready to summon it at a moment's notice.
Jul 14, 2025 9:36 am
Chase whispers"What about the cellar?"
Jul 14, 2025 12:31 pm
Arya doesn't see well in the dark and wait for the others to decide what to do, catching up her breath.
Jul 14, 2025 2:07 pm
"The cellar is boarded up as well," Theran replies to Chase's query.
Jul 14, 2025 2:21 pm
"Saved by our foes’ incompetence," the warrior whispered to those next to her, with a mix of frustration and mirth in her tone. "Would make for a great heroic poem," she added, while seeking to discern any threatening movements coming towards the hiding party.

It is then that the party realizes that Jonel is not with them.

They do a quick review: everyone split up when they saw the patrol; Morton helped Myrtha, Aanbo guided Arya. Morton stayed with the humans while Theran went back and found Ember, and Aanbo brought Chase.

The three who can see - Theran, Morton, Aanbo - take turns searching for the next few minutes, but they cannot find the sorcerer. Chase thinks that he'd be able to track Jonel down, except that it's too dark for him to see. It's a frustrating, frightening few minutes for Arya, Chase, Ember, and Myrtha, standing around in the thick darkness while their friends keep moving around, talking about their companion who has vanished. "What could have happened to him?"
"He could've been caught by the patrol."
They take some comfort in the fact that they did not find Jonel's body in their search. "So he wasn't killed."
"That probably means he was taken away," one of them suggests.
"This is just like Joseph all over again!"
One of them thoughtfully observes: "You know, when we first met him, he'd managed to get away from those undead and survived the whole night and the following day in the forest on his own. He could have just run off again and is laying low until he can see enough to find his way."
"He knows where we were going, so he should be coming here once he can see when the moon rises."
OOC:
Jonel is gone. It's up to you players how you want your characters to handle that absence. In an hour the moon will have risen enough for humans to navigate, allowing Chase to track without additional light and Jonel to find his way, as long as the sky remains clear. The party could produce light now, in the hopes of drawing Jonel out of hiding, since that's what worked before, and/or some/all of the party could go searching for him in the dark (with or without light). You could also assume that he's gone to ground and continue with the mission as planned. Those are just some of the possibilities; what do you want to do?
Jul 14, 2025 4:17 pm
"We've no time," Aanbo says, frustration in his voice. "One person can hide better than a group, so let us trust Jonel to know what is best. The rest of us need to get inside as quickly as possible; the longer we remain outdoors, the greater the chance of us being discovered."

Aanbo relies on his darkvision and goes to check if the front door is also boarded up. If it is, he'll return to the group to make his report and suggest that they try to pry open the cellar door since it is only visible from the mill.
Jul 14, 2025 4:34 pm
Aanbo finds that the front door of the Golden Grain Inn is not boarded up, as it was still intact when the party left. It does appear to be locked, however.
Jul 14, 2025 4:40 pm
Aanbo reports the status of the front door. "We'll be exposed, but if we can get in quickly, we'll leave little evidence," he says. "If anyone can provide some assistance in keeping us quiet and concealed, now's the time. Ember, if you need help, let us know."
OOC:
Aanbo can keep watch, but can anyone Help Ember for possible advantage on her lockpicking?
Jul 14, 2025 8:12 pm
"I used my smithing tools to open the cellar door, maybe I can provide Ember with some help?" the warrior whispered in the darkness.
OOC:
Offering to assist, if it can help…
Jul 15, 2025 12:59 am
"I'll do my best," Ember says, feeling for the door. Using her sense of touch, she deftly works the lockpicks.
OOC:
I'm assuming that she does not suffer disadvantage, since lockpicking is largely by feel anyway.

Jul 15, 2025 3:19 am
OOC:
I think your check to pick the lock would be higher than just a straight DEX check, since tool proficiency lets you add your proficiecy bonus to the roll.

IIRC, in 2014 edition picking locks wasn't a sleight of hand check.
Jul 15, 2025 3:49 am
OOC:
I honestly don't know, and didn't feel like looking it up, is all. If she adds her proficiency bonus, she made a 19.
Jul 15, 2025 4:49 am
Ember feels her way to the door, finds the keyhole, and very quickly is able to trip the tumblers and open the latch. There is no bar on the door: a hopeful sign that no one is waiting on the inside.

With the help of the demihumans, everyone has soon slipped into the common room of the Golden Grain Inn. It is very dark, and quiet.
Jul 15, 2025 4:53 am
Once inside, Aanbo checks if the door can be re-locked. He hopes that a patrol doing a door-check would think nothing is amiss if the door is still secured.
Jul 15, 2025 6:43 am
Myrtha enters in silence, taking in the smells of the taproom. The metallic tang that characterised the smell of this place, the room where Reptile had met his end, seemed less prevalent. The villlagers might have cleaned the blood of their fight, or perhaps it was just that the blood had dried enough.
"Should I light a torch? I’d rather avoid drawing attention to our presence here…"
OOC:
If someone had candles, Myrtha would try to light one. If not, she’d rather be guided down into the cellar before lighting a torch.
Jul 15, 2025 9:54 am
"We should probably wait until we are downstairs to light torch or lantern."
Jul 15, 2025 2:58 pm
"We should probably do a quick sweep of the inn, to make sure we're alone. This seemed to be something of a base of operations, I'm not sure this group would abandon it -- especially if they have a private way in and out. Beyond that... the village is bad enough, but I don't want to leave additional threats behind us if we can help it," Theran suggests as he looks around the common room, keeping a wary eye out for changes since their last visit. He also takes a moment to coil up his rope and resecure it to his ruck.

The memories of this place... he felt his throat tense as his grip on his staff tightened. Still... he had to keep a cool head. Mistakes now could cost a lot of lives -- the Dungeon Busters were accomplished, but against most of a town? Especially if they held back?

No... cooler heads must prevail.

Myrtha and Chase have their exchange about light in soft voices. No one is certain that the Inn is completely empty, though there is no sound or sense of movement aside from themselves. Realizing that there's no convenient key on the inside, Aanbo nudges Ember, who understands immediately. As Theran and Morton take the hands of Arya, Chase, and Myrtha to lead them around the furniture (there are still some stubbed toes as chairs are bumped in passing) to the kitchen, the rogue finds the lock again and works her skill on the tumblers, re-locking the front door. Then Ember whispers "Done" so that Aanbo knows its time to take her hand and lead her after the others.

As they move through the common room, through another door, past the kitchen counters, through another door, and carefully down the stairs in the pitch darkness, Morton, Theran, and Aanbo observe that the Inn does not seem to have seen recent use, nor (the druid and monk notice) does it seem to have been cleaned since they left it ten days ago. The remains of the late-night meal that Derek, Hamiff, and Bertram were having when the party interrupted them still sits, moldering, on one of the tables. The kitchen air is stale and the counters are dusty. If anyone has been here since the dead bodies were collected, they haven't used any of these spaces.

Finally, the party arrives down in the basement, with a flight of stairs and three closed doors between them and the outside. All four doors leading out of this room - the door to the wine cellar, the door to the pantry, the secret door, and the door upstairs back into the kitchen - are closed. Aanbo checks the stashed weapons that he left here behind the barrels; they are gone.

With it being that he is also entirely broke, he also doesn't have anything to light up with a tinderbox that he manages to have. No torches, candles, or a lantern. Be barely has any coin and certainly not enough for adventuring supplies such as the ration he has barrowed.

He does look about the walls and such for a possible source to light up to aid others and rid him of leading the blind. Torch or a sconce would be nice.

He has been rather quiet and offers nothing in planning. Being rather new, he is much a bump on a log.

Morton sees several unlit torches in iron sconces hammered into the stone north wall. Theran, Myrtha, Chase, and Aanbo already knew they were there (though the two humans can't see them at the moment) from their previous visit.

Considering the party is rather enclosed and safe now and illumination would not expose us to problems, quiet Morton takes down a needed torch from a nearby sconce and lights it up with his handy tinderbox from his lean backpack after he stops aiding the blind by leading. He will give the burning torch to priestess Arya for light to aid her after as it flares to life.

"Let's find the tunnels," says Aanbo. "Sorry, everyone. We'll be in the dark for a little while longer, bear with us."
Jul 15, 2025 10:25 pm
As Morton retrieves a torch, Aanbo is addressing the group: "Let's find the tunnels." The dwarven monk tests to see if his memory serves as to how to open the secret door. "Sorry, everyone. We'll be in the dark for a little while longer, bear with us." Moments after, the sparks catch the pitch, and soon all the human adventurers breathe a sigh of relief because they can see again. Aanbo pulls the wall sconce furthest from the stairs, and it shifts. With a shudder and a creak, the secret panel in the eastern wall swings open again, revealing the secret meeting room. The light shining through the opening reveals a narrow patch of the far wall with a ladder set into it. Theran steps in immediately to get a quick look; he sees no sign of an ambush in the shadows, and he's secretly relieved that their former captives Lhari and Hamiff aren't here, dead from starvation (or otherwise). The trap door in the ceiling is closed, and the heavy door in the southern wall that leads to the tunnels is closed and barred.

https://i.imgur.com/ywqVZJ6.png

The newcomers to the basement take stock of their surroundings: two large support pillars hold up the floor of the kitchen and common room above. To the west, the stairs lead up to the kitchen from the center of the room. On either side of the stairs a sturdy wooden door is set in the western wall. Tables and chairs have been stacked against the southern wall with old barrels: castoffs or overflow from the Inn. Part of the wooden wall to the east has slid back to reveal a secret meeting room where Theran is standing, scanning for threats (he sees none, as described above).

Arya doesn't like the dark and tight space, she often grab the arm of the person in front of her, startled by some weird noise come from oblivion. - " Are we there yet... ? " As a worshipper of the sun, nothing less would be expected from her.

Arriving in the shady basement, Arya doesn't take initiative and wait for Theran report of what is beyond the secret door.
Jul 17, 2025 3:20 pm
As soon as the light floods the Golden Grain's basement, Myrtha breathes slightly easier, and immediately moves behind Theran. She stands protectively behind the elf, and tries to observe the barred door beyond: "You think they tampered with it?"

Meanwhile, weeks ago...

Elves do not sleep as other creatures do. Rather they enter into a restful, meditative state to commune with the world around them and organize the impressions, emotions, thoughts, and memories of the previous day into the decades and centuries worth of information that adults have accumulated. It is not sleeping, and there are no dreams...except in rare circumstances, such as when an elf is spirited away to the Feywild. Then even elves rest and have experiences that are not their own memories, but new visions and interactions. Thus it has been for Lyrel. Ever since she first dreamed of Unshalevagoruvimue Kalaign telling her that she must help the great wizard of Orlane, Lyrel has been traveling to find that place.

Finally, after much wandering in foreign lands unknown to her, Lyrel met someone who had heard of Orlane in the Duchy of Keoland. On the road, she broke bread with a traveling outlander, and they exchanged stories of the strangeness of the people of Keoland and their ways. The shaggy traveler with the large axe told her that he had left the town of Hochoch and its Dungeon Busters guild a week earlier to return home to his people. Though he had never been there, he believed that Orlane was east of Hochoch, through a dark wood "filled with monsters and deviltry." He did not have much else to offer about the place, and had not heard of the great wizard. After the meal, Lyrel thanked him for his company, wished him well, and adjusted her course south for the town of Hochoch (at just about the exact same time, dozens of leagues to the south and east, heroes leaving Orlane with their dead companion were attacked by a sounder of wild boars).

...and every night as she traveled south through Keoland, Lyrel dreamed of the fantastically alluring otherworldly creature smiling at her in her dreams. They spoke of many things, large and small, sharing laughter and tears, but invariably Unshalevagoruvimue would also cajole, flatter, or importune her to attend to Orlane's wizard.

Even with these dreams, Lyrel needed little time to rest, and whenever she was awake, her feet tapped and her fingers twitched until she started on the path to Orlane once more. So it was that, nearly a week later, Lyrel arrived in Hochoch in the morning of the day after Olpert sent the Dungeon Busters squad east to rescue Joseph and uncover/stop the evil in the village (Day 26 in our campaign reckoning). No sooner had the dusty, road-rank traveler set foot within the West Gate than she was approached by a friendly and very pretty young human woman, who introduced herself as Lienne. "Good morning, dear!" Lienne smiled, "You seem new to our town. Welcome to Hochoch! Is there anything I can help you find?"
OOC:
@runekyndig - we can play out some of the interaction with the people of Hochoch here, if you like. If you'd rather, we can conduct that in the Side Conversations thread, to keep this thread on the action in Orlane (which Lyrel will be joining soon).

Arya, Myrtha, and Chase follow Theran into the secret meeting room, the light of the torch illuminating the space. Aside from the vertical ladder leading up to the ceiling's trap door, there is a table with chairs, a bench that has been used as a counter, and a large set of shelves. Chase notices there is a bit of severed rope under the table: the ropes that had bound Hamiff and Lhari.

A heavy wooden door is set in the southern wall; the hinges reveal that the door swings inward. Rings anchored to the wall bracket the door, and a stout beam has been slid through the rings to prevent the door from opening. It looks substantially the same to Theran, Myrtha, and Chase as when they saw it last. Ember examines the door more closely; there are no signs that the door has been tampered with on this side: no wires, twine, or traces of any sticky material.

Aanbo shakes some of his nerves from his hands. "If there's nothing preventing us from moving forward, let's do so," he says. "Just be mindful of anything the cultists might have set up to block our progress."
Jul 18, 2025 4:07 pm
Chase will draw his sword"Yes, let us move on."

Theran draws the power of nature into his staff and simply nods, ready to go.
OOC:
Theran will continue to recast Shillelagh as soon as it expires. The spell is a canteip and it's only a bonus action to cast, but he expects to run into the cult with no warning so he will endeavor to at least have his weapon ready to act -- at all times.

Ember falls into line with everyone else.
Jul 18, 2025 7:00 pm
Theran cast Shillelagh as together Chase and Aanbo pulled the beam out of the rings and set it aside. Opening the door, a stale, cold funk of must and decay washed over the party. The light from the torch that Arya bore revealed a tunnel dug out of the earth, packed down hard for a floor and propped up with wooden timbers every few paces for walls and ceiling. The overhead clearance is low, maybe just a boot over two paces, so that while exploring the tunnel, the taller adventurers' hair might brush the dirt. Ember and Morton steeled themselves to venture into the unknown.
OOC:
As the party considers the cold, dark opening, what is the marching order? Who will go first, who will follow, and who will bring up the rear? Will you keep to only one light source (the burning torch that Arya carries) or light more?
Myrtha offers a torch to someone who would hold it, and steps to the front of the group.

Marching order:
1. Myrtha (17/18)
2. Chase Brandstone (14/14) with lit torch
3. Ember Heatherton (9/9)
4. Morton (9/9)
5. Aanbo Earthshaker (27/27)
6. Arya Arkon (10/10) with lit torch
7. Theran Nailo (18/18)
Jul 18, 2025 7:12 pm
Myrtha volunteers to take the lead, or to stay next to the head of the party. She will not be silent, but she is well protected and tough enough to withstand many an attack.
OOC:
Myrtha has ten torches, I’d say let’s use one of them at the rear of the party.
Jul 18, 2025 8:15 pm
"I will be take the next spot and will hold a torch. We will need light up front for us. We should definitely have a torch near the rear also." Chase will pull a torch from his pack and fire it up. Torch in left hand sword in his right he is ready to move.

Theran will fall towards the back of the line, bringing up the rear and ensuring no one attacked from behind them.

Aanbo asks, "Should I scout ahead? I can see well enough in the dark, though I will admit I often don't know what I'm looking for."
OOC:
Aanbo can be ahead of the group with darkvision and 35' movement speed. If we don't feel like having any separation, he can be in the middle, behind Morton or Chase.
Jul 19, 2025 12:13 am
Chase will look at Aanbo"That might not be wise. What if there are pit traps?"Then he will address Myrtha"It might be wise to take it slow and use your spear to probe the ground ahead just in case."
Jul 19, 2025 1:05 am
"I am uncertain pit traps would be a concern," Theran interjects. "At least generally. They know we know about these tunnels, but these tunnels are still how they move around undetected. I feel like anywhere they put a trap will be a location their own people can move around it without much trouble."
Jul 19, 2025 2:15 am
Ember would be willing to take a spot near the front (but not the front line) so that she can easily get to locked doors or potential traps.

Arya is ready to follow, torch in hand.

Assuming Aanbo doesn't rove ahead after all, this is what I've put together as a marching order, based on your responses.

Marching order:
1. Myrtha (17/18)
2. Chase Brandstone (14/14) with lit torch
3. Ember Heatherton (9/9)
4. Morton (9/9)
5. Aanbo Earthshaker (27/27)
6. Arya Arkon (10/10) with lit torch
7. Theran Nailo (18/18)

Myrtha leads the way, Chase lighting the way behind her left shoulder.

Soon enough, the passage splits into three directions: west, south, and southeast.

He keeps his great club still on a cord and not in his hands. He keeps them free to cast Eldritch Blast as he had done in the battle before. His green eyes look over the passageway as we move. The flickering torch light doesn't do much for him as he relays upon his darkvison.
Jul 19, 2025 7:34 pm
Moving cautiously forward, the warrior allows her sight to adapt to the flickering torchlight and the cramped darkness of the tunnels.

"Id say we go left, unless you can see any tracks heading elsewhere, Chase."
OOC:
Suggesting heading SE, unless Chase can provide more information on the splitting paths. Also, is the ground stone, mud or just dry earth? Can we see any torch sconces from where we stand?

matmaisan says:

OOC:
The floors are very dry, tight-packed earth.
There are no torch sconces, just the regularly-spaced timbers braced to keep the tunnel from collapsing.

Chase examines the ground in the flickering torchlight. There are no discernible tracks, but there are signs that something irregularly-shaped has been dragged down each passage. It's always hard to say how long ago something like that happened, as there is no wind to disturb tracks here, so something like this might lie undisturbed for weeks, if the traffic is that infrequent.

With no further information to go on, Myrtha leads the way down the left-most branch of the tunnel (southeast). The tunnel curves as they go, so that the people in front cannot see the people in the back and vice versa. All the way at the end of the line, Theran hears a faint "snap!" in the distance down one of the other tunnels, barely audible over the noise of all the people in front of him carrying their gear in close quarters. He's pretty sure that it was not a noise that the party made; it's tough to be sure. Luckily, the uneven dirt walls alternating with wood timbers do not reflect sound very much, so everyone is fairly confident that the noise of their passage does not carry far.

OOC:
The map shows that the door to the secret meeting room is still open. Question for @MaJunior - While there is no way to lock or bar the door on this side, will Theran leave the door open behind him, or close it?
