Looks like you got lucky, you seem to have accidentally stumbled onto yet another thing the staff can do. Right at the start of your swing, the end starts glowing a faint white and when you connect the ice shatters, and you get thrown back a few feet. You also notice that there is now a large dent in the door.

The door to the stairwell is locked, since students aren't supposed to be up here, but it shouldn't be a problem for you to teleport back down.
