Episode 1: Festival and Fire

Mar 6, 2017 6:12 pm
You are in the quiet coastal town of Sandpoint just in time for the annual Swallowtail Festival, celebrating the arrival of fall.

The turnout for the opening speeches is quite respectable, and the four keynote speakers each deliver short but well-received welcomes to the festival. Mayor Deverin’s friendly attitude and excitement prove contagious as she welcomes visitors to town and jokes about how even Larz Rovanky, the local tanner (and notorious workaholic) managed to tear himself away from the tannery to attend, much to everyone’s amusement (except Larz’s).

Sheriff Belor Hemlock brings the crowd down a bit with his dour mood, his reminder to be safe around the evening’s bonfire, and his request for a moment of silence to remember those who lost their lives in the fire that claimed the town’s previous church several years ago.

The next speaker is scheduled to be local nobleman Lonjiku Kaijitsu, but a sudden illness has prevented him from attending the ceremony. Sandpoint’s own showman Cyrdak Drokkus is more than up to the challenge of bringing the crowd’s mood back up with his rousing anecdotes. He delivers a not-completely-irreverent recap of the long process the town went through to finance and construct the new cathedral. He throws in a bit of selfpromotion at the end, as is his wont, inviting everyone to stop by the Sandpoint Theater the following evening to check out his new production of "The Harpy’s Curse," revealing that the lead role of Avisera the harpy queen will be played by none other than the famous Magnimarian diva Allishanda! Finally, Father Zantus steps up to give a short speech thanking everyone for coming before declaring the Swallowtail Festival underway.
OOC:
Feel free to introduce your characters arriving in town and taking in the festival. Will get the game going and roll for obligations once all the characters are in :)
Mar 6, 2017 7:42 pm
A woman sits crouched beyond the fringes of the crowd, the voices of the speakers faint echoes to her ears. She has heard these words before - or rather ones like enough to them that the specific content now is nothing to her. But it's not their words that she is here for anyway... Gatherings like this become creatures in their own right, wholly different than the individuals that make up its body. And when there is a creature this large in your forest... you want to know what it's doing.

She stands and walks along the perimeter of the gathering. Her head is shaven down to stubble on one side, the hair she does have is tended for cleanliness but not fashion - giving her an unkempt look, her frame is muscular but she moves with a feminine grace. A long cloak makes it hard to see much more than the bulk of some armor draped over her.
Mar 6, 2017 7:55 pm
Butler stands close to the front of the crowd, his heavy frame causing most people to give him space out of a false sense of intimidation rather than any real intent on his part. Armed and armoured as a fighting man he exudes a quiet confidence that causes any of the local toughs to think again about starting trouble close to him.

After the declaration that the festival is now underway Butler joins in with the applause before waiting a few moments for the crowd to clear a bit before moving into the town proper lest he jostle anyone unintentionally. Time to get a drink! he thinks to himself before looking for the nearest taproom or inn
Mar 6, 2017 9:21 pm
Drake cheers the start of the festival from his seat among a series of tables out in front of a tavern. They were setup so folks can drink and be outside with the festivities at the same time. He hadn't thought to stay in town for as long as he had, but alas his ship had been temporarily grounded due to "possibility of elicit activities". He knew that it was non-founded and would blow over, but he had decided to make himself scarce nonetheless. Besides he had made a bet with Tryn, a shipmate, that he could bed every wench at a particular bar. He was not about to lose a bet he considered so easily won. Problem was, after the third or fourth one they started talking to each other. The last two would certainly be difficult. Still, Tryn would never know his job wasn't entirely completed. Four out of six would do fine.
Once the opening oration had finished, Drake grinned "Sandpoint Theater he says? That may just be worth taking a look at eh?" He says to another shipmate he was drinking with. "I've heard great things about actresses." The sailor just shakes his head with a small smirk.

Drake Beckett is a man of about 5'10'', with gold eyes, blond hair, and neat facial hair. He wears leather armor, though it is ornate enough to betray him as a man of high birth, if the shoulder cape didn't do so first. He also has a large hat with a laughably large plume. He wears an eye patch over his right eye, but occasionally switched it to the other one. At his hip is a shiny, fancy rapier.

Filgird had originally made the trip out to Sandpoint to help with the rebuilding of the temple and now that the job was done, he was ready to move on the wherever Sarenrae guided him. That said, he wasn't going to leave before getting a chance to celebrate with the townsfolk at the festival.
Filgird was of average height for a dwarf. He had a long scar running from just below his eye to the bottom of his chin. He kept his brown beard trimmed almost to stubble as part of the oath he had taken long ago to his god.

Currently he is dancing on the dance floor, and politely declining any drinks offered to him.

Zahn:
Zahn, as you walk the outskirts you encounter a group of people gathered around a heavy rope. You can hear them discussing among themselves.

"It ain't fair. We are one short," one of them says angrily. He seems to be the leader of one group.

The one who looks to lead the other group one snorts. "Just afraid of losing again."

At this moment one of the other guys notice you, and calls you over. "Hey, you! Wanna help us win. Looks like you'd be good at tug-of-war."
OOC:
If you decide to help out, give me a Purple+Red Athletics check with two Blue due to the assistance.
Butler:
Butler, you quickly find the Rustry Dragon, the biggest and most reputable inn and tavern in Sandpoint. Inside you can see several employees running back and forth delivering orders. Already this early in the afternoon it's hard to find an empty table. From the kitchen comes the unmistakable smell of good cooking that would water the most picky stomach. One man stumbles into you from the lack of space. "Sorry," he says weakly as the moves out the door.
OOC:
Give me an Average Perception check.
Drake:
Drake, you have found a table with great view at a shady little tavern known as the Hagfish. The beer is cheap, but it seems to be favored by the sailors of both the sea and sky sort. Your conversation is interrupted as a man comes running outside and starts throwing up big chunks. From inside you can hear great laughter. "Another one who's not as tough as he thinks," the voice of the barkeeper calls out. "Any other takers?"

One of the crewmen turns around with a quizzical look, when one of the locals pipes up. "Wouldn't do it if I was you. The challenge is to chug a pint of hagfish slime. Costs a coin and if you win you get all the coins that's been collected over the years. Only one have ever made it."
OOC:
Drinking Hagfish slime is a revolting experience and anyone attempting to will have to make a Hard Resilience check upgrades once. So Purple + Purple + Red.
Filgird:
Filgird, you are at White Deer dancing when you hear an commotion nearby. Two men are shouting at each other. "You stay away from her," you hear a middle aged man saying as he pushes a man young enough to be his son to the ground. Both seems quite inebriated. As the older man turns his back, you notice the younger man drawing something from within his jacket. You can't make out what it is, but it seems to reflect light. Could it be steel?

Zahn's eyes widen slightly as she realizes the groups attention is on her, and indeed they've issued her some sort of challenge! ... She squints at all of those gathered, appraising them, as she approaches wordlessly and cautiously. She stoops to take up the rope feeling it's weight, and testing her grip around it, in one hand without taking her eyes off the largest of the males on the other side of the line...

"You will submit to me, if I best you!?, she raises her voice sharply as she addresses the large man.

She interprets the odd looks, derisive banter, and nervous chuckles of the people as a sign of their fear and tacit agreement as she tensions the rope between herself and the other group. She looks to those holding the rope behind her once, in a glance that says "Ready yourselves!", before snarling as the line-judge drops his hand signaling the start of the contest...

When the sailor inevitably tries to back out, Drake insists. "Nonsense! I once saw you take a bite out of a blue skimmer raw! This challenge will be as easy as breaking an egg. Though perhaps a bit more messy. Come now man, show these fishers what airmen are made of!" He says with a slap to the back.

Butler:

You notice the drunk guys fingers entering your pouch. A low life pickpocket. He notices, that you notice him. There’s a whole lot of noticing going on. Turning around to get a better look at the crook, you bump into another bar patron and feels his elbow in your side. Before you have time to grab him he takes off running. You realize he couldn’t have gotten away with much, but you still could try to catch up to him.
OOC:
You notice him picking your pocket, but spending two threats to him getting away. For the last threat, you suffer 1 strain from the elbow in your side.
Zahn

You, and the rest of your team, pull all you can, and the other team is pulled forward with great might. You can hear muffled laughter as they all end up in the middle of a pile.

"Great work," the one who called out to you cheers. "Name’s Banny Harker. I work up at the mill. I get it you’re not from around here."

While he chats to you, the other team gets up. Most looks happy at the celebration, but the loud one that seemed to be in charge gives you an angry glare.

Drake

The crewman gives Drake a look that could cut glass. "Remind me never to play with you again," he scoffs. As you head inside you can barely make out his mutter: "Probably cheating anyway."

Reluctantly he pays up a coin and the barkeeper walks over to a large fish tank filled with hagfish. He scoops up a mug of slimy water to cheers from the crowd.

The young crewmember grabs the mug, takes a deep breath and starts chugging away. Gulp after gulp it actually goes down and while all color disappears from his face, he is somehow able to finish.

The barkeeper looks on in surprise before he starts clapping and laughing. "Hell. Never thought I’d see that again," he tosses a pouch at the crewman. "Here ya go. Well deserved."

The crewman looks over at Drake. "Hah!" is all he is able to mutter. He burps, looks like he’s about to chuck it all back up. Everyone goes silent waiting, and as he raises his hand to show he is ok, the room erupts into cheers again.
OOC:
Just watching him drink the disgusting hagfish slime is horrible enough to give you 2 strain. The last 2 I'll spend on him holding a grudge for calling him out and in a way challenging him in front of the rest of the crew.
Filgird

The young man rejects Filgird’s hand. "Tell this oaf I’ve done nothin’ wrong!" he exclaims as he gets back up.

"Hah!" the older man replies. "I saw you eying her."

He moves forward, pushing Filgird’s aside and punches the young man. He falls back into the barkeeper that’s been making his way over to see what the commotion is. This again, causes the barkeeper to tumble into another festival goer, who spills his beer all over a middle aged woman. "Hey. Look where you’re going fool!" the woman’s husband or boyfriend pipes in, he looks ready to let his fist do the talking for him as well.
OOC:
You failed, but you’re starting to get a view of the situation. You can use your advantage to either make the young man drop his dagger, so it’s out of the picture for the moment or you can get a Blue on your next check.

Butler, you are able to keep pace with the pickpocket. As you yell out, several festival goers grab at the thief, but he is able to dodge and weave, rounding the corner, away from the festival proper. He is breathing heavily, the "exercise" seems to take a strain on him.

Drake folds his arms and shakes his head. "Making a ruckus, in a festival? Thieves these days need to learn when to take some time off." Drake says aloud. Still, his curiosity peaked, he strolls towards the situation.
Mar 13, 2017 6:11 pm
Zahn you land inside the building and can see down to the floor below. You see Butler climbing through the window. The both of you, see the pick pocket huddled in a corner, holding onto someone. A young girl. This is the first time you can get a good look at them, and their clothing and appearance mark them as Varisian. The girl looks pale and sickly. He hasn't noticed Zahn, but he looks up at Butler. "Sorry sir," he says, and you can barely hear her as the young girls starts coughing. "I needed the money for medicine."
OOC:

Mar 13, 2017 6:39 pm
OOC:
Gonna quote the Wiki:

Varisians are known as a nomadic culture who rarely settle down for any length of time, and consider all of Golarion to be their home. Despite this preconception, just as many live a sedentary lifestyle in numerous settlements across Avistan, most notably the nation of Ustalav, which was founded by Varisian immigrants. Those who continue their nomadic lifestyle generally traverse Avistan in family groups or clans, either on foot or in their well-known brightly-colored wagons.

Varisians often encounter prejudice when dealing with outsiders, as they are seen as itinerant thieves and unethical swindlers who only stay in one location long enough to steal whatever they can. This preconception is largely based on people's interaction with the Sczarni, the Varisian criminal gangs. Many Varisian bands contain members of the Sczarni, but they can most often be found among the settled members of their people. Most non-Varisians feel that they should therefore be avoided and carefully watched from a safe distance.[4] Korvosans will derogatorily label Varisians moths.[

Zahn frowns at the talk of disease, the thinning of the weak and old by disease is a natural process, especially when a population has swollen beyond a regions ability to support it... but not all diseases are natural. She reflexively draws her cloak up around her face and shrinks back some, toward the hole in the roof, even as she scrutinizes the young female's symptoms.
Mar 14, 2017 9:07 pm
Drake approaches where he lost sight of them, being at this house. He looks around. "Did the bugger get away? He seemed pursued by a rather well-armed gentleman." Drake:

You see an open window in an abandoned house. You can barely make out voices from within.

Filgird:

The older man pushes his way past you, he looks mad with rage he grabs the younger man around the neck and presses him back onto a table. "This will teach you to stay away from my daughter!"

At this point, several people run forward, trying to separate the two men.
OOC:
You get two blue if you try to separate the two due to the helping hands. However the big man is strong, so you will have to test vs his Brawn of 3. I will also use a Destiny to upgrade, the anger seems to give him that extra little strength. If you try to talk him down some more, you will also have to upgrade, as his range gets in the way of listening.

People are averting their eyes, and making "ooh" sounds, as if they were the ones getting knocked to the ground.

A man's voice can be heard above the din. "What in the seven hells are going on here!"

Looking over, you can see a dark skinned man you recognize from the speeches. The sheriff has arrived.

Butler nods a touch too enthusiastically, he isn't one for subterfuge, "Right then, I'll walk with the two of you then. he turns to the new figure "Unless you'd like to accompany us as well stranger?"
Mar 20, 2017 4:48 am
"Hmm... No. I trust this task is quite well handled." Drake says with a smile. "This festival isn't going to enjoy itself after all." He stands and stretches. Before he takes his leave he introduces himself. "I am Drake Beckett, try not to lose your purse again." Away he goes headed for the theater.
Mar 20, 2017 7:04 pm
Butler:

The young man follows you. Along the trip he introduces himself as Gabrie Tomanasile. His sister is named Mairenta. They used to be travelling with a circus, but hard times forced it to split up. Since then, they have been travelling Varisia doing odd jobs, making a living.

Arriving at the Pillbug's Pantry you see a note on the door: "Closed for the festival."

Seems this is a bad day for doing any shopping.

Drake:

Drake, you head towards the theatre and has barely made it there when you can hear a voice from the roof. "Stop hogging. It's my turn."
Mar 20, 2017 7:10 pm
She stays atop the building for a while longer, observing the rhythms of the gathering, but ultimately drops to the ground and meanders toward the food, smelling the scents on the air as she goes.
Mar 20, 2017 7:50 pm
As the young man introduces himself Butler smiles "Good to meet you Gabrie, my name is Butler, Butler Ashdown".

As they reach the apothecary's Butler makes a frustrated sound "Typical" he mutters before walking up to the door and hammering loudly on it "Hello?" he shouts "We have need of your services!"
Mar 21, 2017 9:04 pm

Drake, it sounds like a couple of teenagers. You can hear the sound of feet shifting around up there. Though it's hard to get a view from this angle.
OOC:
Getting a good view requires an Average (2xPurple) Athletics check to climb up. Luckily some nearby rain barrels can provide help, giving a Blue.
Butler:

There's no answer. One of the many passer-byes takes pity on your situation and stops. "He's got a healthy appetite, bet you half a shilling he'll be at the free lunch."

Zahn:

You arrive at the lunch, where all the taverns are giving out free food. It seems as much a marketing ploy of the taverns win new customers, as it is to feed the hungry crowds. Strangely there is an empty table, seems the White Deer hasn't offered up any tasty tidbits to the dismay of many hungry festival goers. The prize for best dish seems to come down to the Rusty Dragon's curry-spiced salmon served with early winterdrop mead and the Hagfish' lobster chowder.
Mar 22, 2017 8:05 pm
"My thanks" Butler says to the passing stranger before turning with his new found companions and starts making his way to the free lunch
Mar 22, 2017 8:29 pm
Zahn fills a plate with various meats, breads, and vegetable dishes from various vendors, drawing many unhappy confused looks as there's no way any competitors dishes could be distinguished from each other in her pile of nourishment. She sits and eats hungrily at a table, occasionally splashing ale into her gullet as well. Her eyes shift about amongst revelers as she gnashes her teeth into the feast, rarely looking at the food itself.

So much spice and salts and creams, she frowns, they must be ashamed of their harvest... concealing it so, behind frippery. she shrugs the meat seems fresh enough to her.

You can feel yourself pulling something as you pull yourself up to the roof. But once up you can clearly see two teenage boys looking into a window on the roof. They are giggling, and don't seem to have noticed your presence.

Butler & Zahn:

Zahn, you see the people from earlier arriving at the lunch. The boy is carrying his sister in his hands. And people are making way to avoid them, especially once his sister get another coughing fit.

Both Butler and Zahn can hear people muttering under their breath about both Varisians as well as the rudeness of bringing sick people to the lunch.

The only one who don't seem to be phased is Father Zanthus, the town priest. He walks up to Gabrie. "What is the matter child," he says, concern clear in his voice.
Mar 24, 2017 1:12 pm
"Greeting padre, the girl is suffering from some sort of ailment." Butler says to Father Zanthus with an extremely respectful tone "Gabrie here has arranged for medicine from a Mr Podicker, one of his neighbours said he would be here"

He is a businessman I guess, and has to think of profit. Why don’t you take her inside the cathedral, and I’ll see what I can do for her."

Drake

They turn around, and you can see the shocked look on their faces. "Uhm… uhm…" one of them begins before he jumps off the roof and lands with a roll.

The other just looks at you like a deer caught in the oncoming glow of a firebreathing dragon. He says nothing, trying to think. Behind him, through the window you can see a beautiful women getting dressed.

The young boy nods and runs off the roof as fast as he can. At this time you can hear a loud boom from near the town square. You also notice the woman looking up at the sound and seeing you standing on the roof. She screams out and runs out the door of the changing room. Then you hear the other scream.

The rest of you can also hear the loud boom. It reverberate throughout the town. As people look around to find out what is going on a woman's scream slices through the air. A few moments later, another scream rises, then another. Beyond them, a sudden surge of strange new voices rises—high-pitched, tittering shrieks that sound not quite human. The crowd parts and something low to the ground races by, giggling with disturbing glee as a stray dog gives a pained yelp and then collapses with a gurgle, its throat cut open from ear to ear. OOC:
Two groups of goblins has started making trouble in the village square. Zahn is at short range, while Baron is at middle range. Drake is all the way out at long range.

Around the square there's lots of panicked people running around. Due to the crowds, getting from Medium to Short distance requires an Average (PP) Athletics or Coordination check (if you have other ideas of how to traverse the distance, feel free). The crowds are also giving one Setback die on all ranged attack.

Calming the crowd requires some form of Social skill with a Hard (PPP) difficulty.

Initiative is as following:
2/2 PC
2/0 NPC
1/2 PC
1/1 PC
Apr 1, 2017 8:33 pm
OOC:
Dunno how you guys feel about it, but in the PBP format I find it easiest if people just use there own slot they rolled, so we don't have to spend a day figuring out who goes when. If you have other thoughts on how best to do it, I would of course be interested in that too.
Zahn leaps from the table, knocking over a carafe as she goes. Leading with her buckler she charges through the crowd, engaging the closest Goblin. Unsure of exactly what she's dealing with, she approaches in a defensive stance, before wading into it with an overhead swing of her hatchet.
OOC:
On her turn - whenever that is decided to be - she is using a M to Engage, an additional M to trigger Def. Stance, and her A to Melee. Taking 3 Strain.

Used the advantages to recover the Strain.

Im fine with that or just have it that all the PC slots get grouped together (either on an average of the initiative rolls or an aggregate of them all) so all the PC's go whenever people pop on and then all of the bad guys go together....that could be a bit one sided though.

Selective - When you said 'Baron' is at medium I'm assuming that's me?
Apr 2, 2017 12:00 pm
The goblins catch on quickly, and are able to scatter as Zahn comes at them.

Screaming something in their own language they attack with their dogslicers.

The other group of goblins attack the citizen, creating even more panic. They keep singing in their horrific voice:
Goblins race and goblins jump
Goblins slash and goblins bump.
Burn the skin and mash the head,
Goblins here and you be dead!
OOC:
Sorry, I meant Butler. That'll teach me to post quickly in a commercial break :P

I can just use more traditional initiative. Or we could use PC and NPC slots and people just post as they have the opportunity. Stuff happens in whatever order people post. That could be the fastest, making it so no one has to wait for anyone else as long as there's an open PC slot.

The other group's effort will give anyone trying to calm or control the panicked crowd one Setback on their attempt.

EDIT: Forgot to upgrade the difficulty, still hit but only 1 success and 1 advantage. With the advantage they'll give a Blue to next ally's check. They also do 6 damage to Zahn.

EDIT 2: With your defense, they miss entirely. Only giving the next ally a Boost die.

Butler, you try to close the distance, but run smack dab into a large group of people blocking your way. You are able to rally the people, and they start heading their way towards the church. Still is a lot of people out, making it difficult to make it, but you think the crowd will clear out soon.
OOC:
Seeing an opening you can upgrade your next check to make it closer on your next action by using your advantage. Using your threat I will rule that it takes time for the people to clear and it will be clear by the end of the next round of combat.
Zahn, you slash at the goblins, hitting one right across the face so hard it’s lopsided eye pops right out. The body falls to the ground dead. Then slashing at another, you make a vicious wound down its’ chest. It is wobbling on its’ feet, heavily wounded, but still standing.
OOC:
They are two minion groups of 3 each so you outright kill one with your Triumph, and another is heavily wounded. Even if you don’t consider them allies yet, the other PCs count if you want to give one to them. But I’ll allow you to take it yourself.
The goblins attack you back. Slicing at you with their dogslicers, being made of barely held together junk they fall apart moments after they slice into you.

The other group notice the shouting man (Butler), louding their slings and shooting at him
OOC:
The first group aims, but still has two black from defense. The second group uses the Boost they gained last round, one setback from defense and one for aiming into the crowd.
Vs Zahn: They do 7 damage, but I will use both disadvantage to make their pitiful swords break down in the proccess.
Vs Butler: 7 damage, they also take 1 strain (turned into damage) from over excertion.
OOC:
Drake. You were at Long range at the start. So you can change your action if you want.

Butler grunts as the sling bolt hits him but shrugs off most of the damage. Satisfied that the crowd is moving towards safety he tries to close with the group of goblins that attacked him.

Butler soaks 6 so takes 1 wound, I'm taking 2 Strain to have a second manoeuvre to try and close to melee with them (I'm assuming that'll be 2 x Athletics checks?) on the assumption I'm gonna get into melee....if I don't I'll use my action for a second manoeuvre instead....so first Athletics checks a bust but the second is 2 successes and a triumph if that's enough to close, attack is a net 8 damage if he gets in

Butler, it takes some doing to make your way through the crowd. Seeing one of the food tables, you run across it, and uses it to jump above the gathered people. People are gasping, at your finesse, the likes they usually only see from street performers and not armored individuals.

The goblins seems in awe of you as well, and you can see fear in their eyes as you slash one of them hard. Your sword hits him hard in the kidneys and he dies instantly.
OOC:
I’ll let you use the two advantage from the first check to negate the two strain you had to spend to use another maneuver.

For your advantage, I have the idea that the goblins are scared of your prowess and will upgrade any check to attack you once on their next turn.

Butler, you swing hits true, and you skewer one goblin making a big nasty wound in his head. With a second swing you get the second goblin in the group right between the ribs.

He’s still standing, but he’s making a horrible gurgling sound as he breathes. Though successful you feel the combat taking its strain on you.

You’re just about to swing once more when you see a crossbow bolt fly through the air, piercing the little bugger’s skull.

Jenna’s aim is equally good, and she’s able to take out one of the goblins attacking Zahn, leaving just one lone goblin behind.

That one, is so hopped on battle rage that he hasn’t yet seen what has happened with his brothers in arms. With his sword broken, he has taken up a chicken leg someone has dropped and slaps Zahn with it. Not only does it miss, the goblin slips on a shoe, no doubt left behind by a festival goer in a hurry, and falls back with a thud. It’s seems to be unconscious.
OOC:
Butler, you suffer 1 strain for your disadvantage.

Alaric, feel free to take Jenna with you into dangerous situations. She will however not be immune to retribution from the enemies.

In this combat there’s just minion groups, and they are all engaged with Butler and Zahn and when attacking them from distance, you should upgrade your check once. I will let it pass this once, as this is just a minion fight to let you show off how awesome you are ;)

And the battle is over. The last goblin had 1 wound left, and he lost that when his strain turned to wound, making it the least heroic death I’ve seen in this system. Fumble with a chicken leg.

The crowds have dissipated, and you can hear sound of combat from the rest of the city. But for now you can roleplay meeting each other and I’ll move it along when everyone’s posted.

That is correct. 1 wound and 2 strain.

As for upgrade of ranged attack. Whenever you attack an enemy engaged with an ally you upgrade once. If you get a despair, you hit one of the other beings engaged with your target. Let it slide this time, because they were technically not your allies yet...
or something like that :P

Question about healing during combat, I'm just unclear on this. Can a player use their action to perform a Medicine check on someone during combat? Like for instance, someone has taken a lot of damage, so the team forms around them and another person can attempt to heal them since they aren't actively engaged in combat?

Once Butler's wounds have been tended he gathers himself to leave. "I directed a number of people to the church as the goblins started their attack. I am going to check there to make sure everyone is safe before I head back out to see if I can help anywhere else." he says to Alaric and Jenna "It's this way if you would care to accompany me?"
Apr 24, 2017 6:17 pm

Aery yawned as he looked around outside the church from his perch. Being small didn't always benefit him especially when there was a mob of people stampeding away from danger but this time it seemed to have worked out. He opted to just go with the flow though and ended up at the church with people as they flooded in. Once there though people seemed to be at a stand still. Offering up to move pews to make it harder to flood in and attack and fortifying the doors incase something came knocking they didn't want to open the doors too. Some thought it was a good idea while others wonder who put Aery in charge. Aery offered up it was a suggestion and people could opt to not try and put the odds in their favor but who ever wanted to question if he was in charge would likely not want to get maimed by an attacker just to show they were 'the boss in charge' plus Aery pointed out him moving around that much furniture was never going to happen and would like comical if he even tried. With people's preservation in mind and a few songs to calm the anxiety thing quitted down a bit. He had opted to climb up and look around from the bell tower in case something was coming their way. Friend or foe it would be easier to see from up high.

A bit bored Aery opted to pull out a small bit of parchment and start scratching out some versus. One's own ballad of greatness rarely writes itself.

A church is a great place to meet a Priest.
Apr 25, 2017 7:32 am
As Butler arrives at the church he begins to look somewhat distracted, his eyes darting about the crowd as he tries to carefully move through the building so he doesn't injure any of the townsfolk with his armoured bulk. "Father Zanthus? Gabrie?" he shouts out into the throng "Has anyone seen Father Zanthus?" he asks some of the townsfolk.
Apr 25, 2017 12:28 pm
Seeing a rather large fellow move into the church and be let in Aery goes down to investigate. Standing on the end of a pew he listens for a bit before letting out a shrill whistle with two fingers to get people's attention. "You have a description of this guy and uh... lady? That might help people point them out." he offers up.
Apr 25, 2017 4:50 pm
"I'm here," Father Zanthus says coming out of a side door holding blankets. "I have her safe back in my room."

Before you have time to react, people have noticed your arrival, and starts barraging you with questions. "What's going on out there? Is it safe? Did you see my daughter out there?""
Apr 25, 2017 5:20 pm
Describe him? It's his church! Butler thinks to himself as the figure addresses him. He opens his mouth to respond when Father Zanthus makes an appearance, he turns to the priest with a grateful smile and opened his mouth to respond to him before he is cut off again by the questions from the rest of the townsfolk.

He pauses for a moment to process the barrage of questions, holding his hand up to try be instil some calm into the crowd before responding "Friends, I will try to answer you all but please one at a time" as the flow slows somewhat he starts to explain the situation "It seems not an insignificant force of goblins have attacked the town, whilst myself and a few others" he gestures to Alaric as he continues "have dealt with those in the immediate vicinity but there is still sounds of fighting in the rest of the town. I intend to head back out to assist now that I know this location is safe and I will direct any of the other towns people here as I find them." he nods to the crowd in general before turning back to the door pausing to whisper in Alaric's ear "Your bow may be useful out there but your daughter may be safer here, given that she seems a fair shot she would be an asset to the churches defence at the least" he pauses for a second to see how Alaric responds.

Butler, you seem like a good man. I appreciate your point and you may be right. Alaric says quietly.

Alaric turns to Jenna. Jenna? What do you think about staying here? We've been through a lot lately but Butler is right, it's going to be dangerous out there. You know I love you girl, you're old enough to make up your own mind. If you want to stay here for a few days it's ok. If you'd rather go with us though, you know there is nobody I trust more at my back. Alaric smiles at his adopted daughter, seeing Raina in the girl's face.

Aery points towards the man answer the call and watches for a bit.

"If you're looking into who's in charge of the attacking forces and going to take out the goblins' boss I don't mind tagging along. Granted if we could bolster our numbers along the way with other people fighting back against them it would be beneficial as well. Sky's always bluest after a strong wind..." he offers up.

Jimmy has been standing near Father Zanthus. He moves forward now to greet Butler, Aery, Alaric and Jenna. Jenna? I saw you shoot that Gobin. Well done. Jimmy looks around the group. If you don't mind, I'll be travelling with you.
OOC:
I read through the forums. Interesting idea for Alaric to have a daughter. I like it, it's a fresh twist instead of just a bunch of guys rampaging around and trying to seduce tavern girls. I hope that Jenna stays with the group.
Apr 25, 2017 7:58 pm
Butler nods at the new figures "Another couple of pairs of hands would be appreciated. My name is Butler Ashdown" he turns to Father Zanthus "Father, if the goblins attack the church while we are out in the town just ring the bell, we will get back here as quickly as we can" he turns back to his new companions "Shall we?" he says with a grin before heading for the door.

"Usuries Trill also known as Aery the Magi blessed by the wind itself." Aery explained he hands extending away from his body with a flourish. "Yeah we should probably get to busting up fights..." he admits and shuffles out the front of the church looking about as he goes outside.
Apr 26, 2017 12:11 am
Darakar looked the building up and down from across the street as he used the corner of a house as a back-scratcher.

"A building...whose sole purpose...is the worship...of one burghan," he muttered to himself between scratches before stepping away from the house and finishing his previous thought, "How perverse."

At least there's something to fight, even though these naked badgers may not be able to send me to Vangalr they can sing a catchy tune.

"Now, to find some food, mead, or more of the naked badgers to fight."
OOC:
The word burghan is a general term for god/deity. The naked badgers comment, a slur used by his people for goblins.

Alaric pauses before he follows Butler out of the church. Jenna, if you feel safer staying here until we get the rest of these goblins ran out of town then you can. You know I feel better when I have you nearby but it is dangerous out there. Are you going with me or staying here?

"I'll be safe here," Jenna replies with a smile she's obviously put on for show.

Behind her Drake steps up. "I'll stay behind, make sure they're defended. Won't let them hurt anyone here."

On the way out, Zanthus begs you to be safe. "Desna be with you."

Here and there, the sounds of battle, clanging swords, calls of support by the town guard, and shrieking and singing goblins echo through the streets, but at the festival itself, most of the citizens have fled. One or two goblins remain behind to scavenge food, and many more lie dead (along with a few unfortunate citizens). Seems the fighting has moved on, and to the north you can hear the sound of a scream and a frantic barking.
Apr 26, 2017 5:56 pm
Aery follows the group out of the church until they come upon bodies and makes a sign as if to will the dying spirits to pass on in peace. "Soooo do the north where all the hub bub is bubbling?" he offers turning as they go in that general direction.
Apr 26, 2017 6:54 pm
Butler nods at Aery as he draws his sword and readies his shield "Aye, the north of town seems to be where we are needed." he says before he starts to trot off in that general direction
Apr 26, 2017 7:53 pm
As he was about to leave, Darakar noticed several people leave the perverse building across the road. While one seemed to be a child, the rest looked more or less like warriors. His focus was drawn to the human with the shield and sword, he looked to be the khurav of the group.

Approaching the group as the human drew his sword and readied his shield, Darakar called out with as much command over their tongue as he could manage with his missing lip.

"I greet you warriors, are you setting off to find more of the naked badgers? If so then our purposes align. Shall we send them to Munkalhr?"
Apr 26, 2017 8:05 pm
"I guess we could... I mean we're not drunk yet but maybe after the battles done and over with... Usually the ladies are more supseptable to sexy times with heroes when they aren't likely to die." Aery offers up misunderstanding most likely, "Sure come along, what's a Mon-Kale-hir? Is it like the Short Troll handshake? I mean... usually you get slapped for doing that kind of thing..."
Apr 26, 2017 8:18 pm
Butler eyes the new figure for a moment before shrugging "We are looking to clear the town of goblins if that is what you mean by 'naked badgers' any assistance would be appreaciated....friend"
Apr 26, 2017 8:34 pm
Looking at the child in confusion, understanding dawned in Darakar with the shield-warrior's statement. Giving a literal half-smile, Darakar fell into step with the group as they made their way northwards.

"Allow me to clarify, in my homeland the attackers' are referred to as 'naked badgers' because they have a tendency to claw and bite at anything within reach. Munkalhr is the destination of the unworthy dead that still die in battle. Vangalr is the resting place of those that live by the warrior's code and die in battle.

"I am called Darakar, what might I call the rest of you?"
Apr 26, 2017 8:49 pm
"I am Butler Ashdown" Butler says with a nod to Darakar.
Apr 26, 2017 8:59 pm
"Ooooh.... well I guess we guess we won't need any lard. Usuries Trill also known as Aery the Magi blessed by the winds themselves." he works through aloud before introducing himself.
Apr 26, 2017 11:08 pm
Alaric feels better, knowing that Drake is going to be there to watch for Goblins. He eyes Darakar but makes no greeting to the other Half-Orc. Alaric has not been comfortable around his own kind since his childhood. He keeps his hands on his crossbow as he moves with Butler, drifting a few paces to the left and behind Butler and signals Darakar to take up a simlar position on the right, knowing that Darakar will understand the importance of placing their fighters on the outside to somewhat protect the Jimmy and Aery (Priest and Mage). Alaric speaks quietly to Jimmy and Aery, telling them to stay in the center, behind Drake and between himself and Darakar.
Apr 27, 2017 3:27 am
Jimmy moves into the position Alaric indicated. I'm not too proud to get some protection. I'm a healer, not a tank :)
OOC:
I'm guessing that we're going to get smacked around anyway, might as well take what protection we can.
Apr 27, 2017 1:39 pm
Aery moves along toward the center of the group as they progress towards sounds of battle and mayhem his quarterstaff on his shoulder. "And I have no shame, we get attacked from behind I'm hiding behind you and whatever it is..." he lets Jimmy know.
Apr 27, 2017 5:31 pm
Moving north you hear the sounds getting louder, and rounding a corner you see what looks like a goblin commander riding an ugly looking animal that looks like a cross between a dog and a rat. The commander and four other goblins are surrounding a well dressed nobleman and his dog. The nobleman has taken shelter behind a rain barrel. You can hear him call out for help while his dog’s barking seems to be the only thing holding the creatures at bay.

You have arrived just in time to see the goblin commando kill the dog with his horsechopper. The dog crashes dying to the ground as the commando’s goblin kin throw up a cheer. Up on one of the roofs you can hear another group of goblins cheering.

Further away a last goblin is singing a goblin tune, inspiring his allies.
OOC:
You have arrived at medium distance from a group of four minions and a goblin riding a dog-like creature. On a nearby roof, also at medium distance, is another group of four minions. Jimmy smiles as Butler drives his flaming sword deep into the goblin commander's chest. When Darakar leaps over the dead dog and smashes his greatax down into the goblin commander, laughing the entire time. Jimmy stares at the barbaric half-orc in amazement. Glad he's on our side.
OOC:
On a side note: If I can find a way to get wings onto Butler, he'll look like an avenging angel. If I remember right, some of the girls that work for my mother have some decorative wings. Of course, they don't wear much except for those wings, not sure how the wings would work with Butler's armor. Something to think about for later. The shock value alone would send enemies running (or laughing). Now, how do I talk Butler into this.

Butler hits the goblin commander hard, and he has to hold on tight not to fall off his mount. It snarls in reply.

The warchanter falls screaming to the ground as Alaric’s crossbow bolt hits it right in the thigh. Staining the ground with its blood.

With the goblin commander attempting to hold on after Butler’s attack, Darakar’s slices right across it’s arms. No longer able to hold on, it falls to the ground with his hands still clutching the reins.

The warchanter stumbles back to its feet, leaning back on a wagon. Wincing in pain he aims his shortbow at Darakar. But trying to avoid hitting his companions makes the arrow go wide and it sticks into the ground behind the ferocious half-orc.
OOC:
It’s fine you’ve engaged in combat. Warchanter upgrades 1 time, as Darakar is still engaged with the goblin dog. He also gets a black due to the pain.

So, just to recap. There's a guy with a real life flaming sword striking doom into the heart of goblinkind. There's a quite possibly half-insane half-orc running around hitting people with a huge ax and laughing like a maniac. There's a gnome who literally sings goblins to death. Speaking of half-orcs, the other one is just standing here next to me. This is our group people and I am loving this game. I'm just sitting on the Dock of the Bay, waiting for the goblins to attack and ready to heal like your health bars are rolling away.

Apr 29, 2017 5:36 pm
The goblin warchanter is hit hard by the bolt, sending him flying through one of the wheels of the cart he’s using as leverage. With the wheel now missing, part of the cart falls down right on top of the body.

The goblin dog looks like a cornered animal all of a sudden. With nowhere to escape to, it lashes out at Butler. Butler dodges it’s clumsy attack easily, getting in an advantageous position.

The group of minions on the ground has started to figure out what’s going on and hesitates for a moment before ganging up on Darakar. Though their attacks are like bites to the big brute, they’re an annoying distraction.

The goblins on the roof takes something out of their pockets, and lights it on fire with their torches. Throwing whatever they are holding with their slings at Aerys, you can see as they land that it’s some crude bomb that explodes.

One of the bombs ends up in a cart filled with Dwarven spirits, and the resulting fireball would be impressive from a greater distance. In mere moments the grass between Aerys and the two close combatants catches fire, seperating the two groups. Moving forward would be dangerous.
OOC:
Spending the 2 threat from the Goblin Dog to give Butler a Blue on his next action.

Group 1 fails, but they give Darakar a Black to his next check, as well as giving a Blue to Minion Group 2’s next check (added retroactively, though it couldn’t have done much in any case.

Group 2 actually succeeds, seems the system here don’t account for the fact that a Triumph counts as 1 success as well as doing something awesome (though this was fixed a while back). That means they have 3 successes - 1 Failure. First off Aerys takes 7 damage.

They spend 1 Triumph creating a wall of fire between the frontal assault and the back support. In addition, they crit Aerys.with their second Triumph. He receives a Sudden Jolt, dropping whatever he’s holding in his hand. Not the most devastating, but still counts as a crit in case of more crits.

Aery’s wound starts knitting together, as if by magic.

The dog whimpers as the burning sword hits it, you can smell burning fur.

Striking out, Darakar, your massive axe slices through two of the goblins as if through butter. Blood splatters you face, making your already fearsome appearance just a little bit worse.

Alaric fires off a load of bolts, hitting three of the goblins. They roll of the roof with shrieks, going silent as their necks break their fall.

The last remaining goblin on the roof, seems to panic and climbs down on the other side of the building. Yelling something in the goblin tongue.

The two goblins fighting Darakar have entered some kind of battle fury themselves, not noticing their losses around. They slash at the half-orc, but he’s fast for his size, easily dodging their blows.
OOC:

Admiring his own handy work Aery initially thinks the goblins were flinging feces they set on fire when he saw one land too close to a cart and start bouncing towards it. His eyes widen as he realizes the label on the barrels were for good dwarven spirits of a high proof... too late; as the cart blossoms skyward in an impressive pillar of fire the intensity of the backlash of fire and heat push Aery back as the cart underneath sends out shrapnel. His face feels hot and slightly sunburned as if he'd been traveling too long on the roads for several hours in the middle of summer. He shakes himself and pats himself over feeling wounds start to close. Looking around he sees the aftermath a wall of fire and the rooftop rioters mostly falling to the ground not purposely by their own decision.

Exhaling slowly his upper lip scrunches slightly as he starts to snatch up his staff as he looks around seeing targets through the fire his eyes narrow he stops. Mocing closer the fire line he moved back and forth along the line of fire looking for an opening and a target.

"Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaariors.... Come out and plaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!" he starts to sing out softly as first before his voice booms over the crackling of the fire in from of him as he fires out a bolt of lighting through the fire when it ebbs out an opening to the enemies remaining.
OOC:
Unsure if you'd want some setback due to the fire. I'm guessing their at Medium still although I moved to the Warchanter that might not be closer to the goblins left though.

If there's no more modifiers that -10 -9 Damage unsure if the dog or goblins would be the easier target.

Edit: Modded roll results are 3 success 2 Adv and a triumph so using the 2 adv to activate Disorient 2 and the triumph I'll upgrade the difficulty of the target's next check due to electrical shock.

Jimmy moves forward into medium range to stand near Alaric and Aery. He raises his quarterstaff toward one of the two goblins harassing Darakar. A blue ray of light flashes from the end of the staff toward the goblin.

8 damage to the Goblin. Using 2A to recover strain, back to full now. Using 2A to trigger Disorient 2 on the Goblin I just hit. Using the last advantage to give Butler a boost to his next attack.

Aery’s bolt flies through the air, frying the dog. It falls spasming to the ground, all four legs in the air.

Then Jimmy’s ray follows moments after, taking care of the rest of the goblins. For a moment you listen for the sound of more combat, but it seems the remaining goblins are fleeing.

The nobleman comes back out from behind the barrel he used as cover. He opens his mouth to thank you, but noticing the fire has spread to one of the buildings. He’s standing speechless looking at it. Those present at the welcoming speeches can remember that the cathedral had just been rebuilt after a fire, so another town fire so soon could be devastating to town morale.

And the combat is over. One of the houses has caught fire. If you want to help stop the fire somehow, roll a skill check,

A quick assessment of the situation had Darakar's mind racing, before an idea came to mind.

"Emargtr short one, do you have any ice, storm, or water magic?"
OOC:
Darakar's idea is to throw Aery up onto the roof-top so as to cast water/ice/rain spells to put out the fires while everyone else is getting buckets, etc.

"Skr'Ar," Darakar cursed before racing to follow Butler's example.

'This would have been much easier, and more fun, if I got to throw the short one,' he thought to himself as he lifted the bucket.

'May the spirit of Raskrin aid me; may Wolyn guide me to greater knowings; may Temdor grant rains in times of drought and sun in times of deluge,' and so on the traditional prayer went in his mind, the familiar words bringing a sense of calmness now that the rush of battle had ended.

You work hard and starts a bucket brigade to save the building. Aery is great help in figuring out where to best utilize your efforts. By the time the rest of the citizen arrives to help out, you've already stopped the fire with minimal damage to the building. One wall need to be replaced and some furniture has suffered smoke damage. But your heroic deeds has saved a lot of lives.

Amiko Kaijitsu, owner of the Rusty Dragon, offers you all room and board for however long your stay in town is. There's even talk about hosting a new festival in your honor.

The noble man you saved seems to be especially impressed by Darakar. "I know I can never really repay you for saving my life," he tells the half-orc. "But I may have an idea about how to start. I will contact you at the Rusty Dragon tomorrow."
May 8, 2017 7:18 pm
Aery gives the man a thumbs up. "Sorry about your dog..." he comments before going over to the others possibly tired from all the labor intensive activity, "Free food and a bed... can't beat that..." he offers up with a few sniffs, "maybe some baths. I might need to start up a song about my deeds... you guys will be mentioned." he adds before to check out the goblins and their leaders bodies looking to see what clues he can figure out. If there was multiple raiding parties someone had to be in charge of them and directing them.
OOC:
Edit:
Once done in the alley Aery will head to the in for a bath, free food and drink, if it sounds like people are out a few things he'll see about starting a community donation for people and chats up an tradesmen in the bar to find out about their business and profession.

I'm going to pick up whatever loot I can salvage from the goblins, armor, weapons, etc and encourage the rest of the party to do the same. If nothing else, maybe we can sell the metal to the local blacksmith and leather to the local tanner to get some money together for the party. Then I'm going to check up on Jenna and make sure Stormbringer is doing ok. If they are ok, then I plan to sweep the perimeter of the town to make sure there are surviving Goblins and take note of any weak areas to notify the captain of the town guard so he or she can shore up their defenses and hopefully prevent this from happening again. I'll ask Jenna to go with me since her combat training needs to continue and securing a perimeter as well as figuring out weak points in a defense is part of her training.

I will thank Amiko Kaijitsu his kind offer but if it's ok with him, Jenna and I will be staying in the stable with Stormbringer once we are done with the perimeter sweep. Hopefully he has a loft in the stable, if not, we'll sleep next to Stormbringer.

Alright, since the fire is out, I'm heading back to the Inn.
OOC:
I'm going to use Create Potion to create some healing potions for the party, If I can make 8 of them, I'll keep 1 for myself, give 1 to Aery, 1 to Alaric, 1 to Alaric's kid, and 2 each to Butler and Darakar. Once I'm done attempting to create the potions, I'm going to bar the door, brace a chair against the door for good measure and

Create Potion: May create a duplicate of an existing potion or create a potion from scratch with the proper materials. Difficulty is up to GM discretion. Magic check. 2 Strain per Potion. I'm trying to duplicate healing potions. (So, I'll have to wait for our GM to assign the difficulty of the Magic check and I guess that I'll have to make a separate Magic check for each potion.)

Once I'm done creating potions, I'm going straight to bed.

The equipment you find on the goblins would barely pass muster in a garbage dump, which is where you realize they've gotten the material. Seems the goblins have a tendency to steal from a place called junk beach. That's why their swords have above average chance of breaking apart and their armor is non existent. You do however find 3 of the small bombs they seemed to throw at you.

Seems it's just to light the fuse and throw them quickly. Far beyond the level of goblin craftmanship as far as you know.
OOC:
Someone checking the bodies can give me a Lore check at difficulty 2xPurple, with a Setback if you're not from the Sandpoint region (Only first one to roll will count so I don't have to deal with that many advantages &/or disadvantages).

Alaric, you can roll a Perception or Vigilance at difficulty 3xPurple, + one Setback due to the setting sun by this time.

Jimmy, you can roll with a difficulty of 2xPurple for each potion. I'll also say it takes some time. 1 hour base time + half an hour for each additional potion of the same type.
May 9, 2017 7:19 pm
Aery frowns at times checking things and squints from time to time occasionally taking notes.

"We should find out what we can about Junk Beach, there might be more goblins teaming there or clues into who sent them out. They aren't smart enough to fabricate something like this... I'm interested to find out who is and why if they're not stolen." Aery states to the larger man looking over notes he's scribbled out with a quill as he wraps the bombs in scraps of cloth for transport back. Standing for a moment he looks over the bodies and mutters to himself looking at his notes his brow furrows with trying to riddle something out the situation that just isn't apparent.
OOC:
Unsure what the region is like for the world I'm going to say Europeans maybe like Greece around the mediterranean? I think it fits in okay for Aery being somewhat of a local boy.

Nodding to the funnily dressed man with the dead dog, Darakar started making his way to the building he saw earlier with a sign bearing a wyruu. These people and their language were so strange, an entire sentence to convey aevne, really?

OOC:
Funnily dressed man? He's dressed like you Darakar... If he starts wearing his dead dog as a hat, he'll actually resemble you from a distance :)
May 10, 2017 6:42 pm
Aery, as you check the bodies, you realize that they all have different clan markings. There seems to be several groups of goblins, at least four that you find. These would normally not work together. One of the reasons the goblins aren’t a bigger problem in these parts, is that they are usually too busy infighting between the different tribes.
OOC:
The smell and rot of the bodies causes you displeasure and you suffer a strain.
Returning to the cathedral you find the kid sleeping next to his sister. "Poor guy was exhausted. I’ve done what I can do for them," father Zanthus says. "Her illness has progressed far, and I’m hoping Calistra’s prayers will be heard."

Alaric, you are able to make out what looks like goblins moving eastwards. Though once they reach the Ravenroost Mountains and Tickwood forest it’s impossible to track them from the air. The town is nothing but unsafe openings, no city walls or barricades at all. With the fear of goblins, the Sheriff gets the help from the local militia, a bunch of farmers to walk the perimeter. They have no discipline and no training however, so you can spot several openings. They don’t seem comfortable getting too far away from each other.
OOC:
You can really feel the cold up here. While a warm afternoon, the temperature sinks once the sun stops shining. You suffer 1 strain.
OOC:
As for where in the world you are. You are rather far north. Not arctic cold north, but probably around Canadian longitude.
There's a map over here: http://www.mapsofgolarion.com/. You are near the city of Magnimar which you can find to the north west.
May 10, 2017 6:58 pm
Aery lugs what looks salvageable for scraps and spare parts back to the inn and plops the junk in a corner before going for a bath. Thinking of the area there would be trouble for even a fortified city if several tribes of goblins were beat into submission under one banner. Stroking his chin he tries to recall if the tribes brandings were even local or not. Them not being would tell a different tale. He sat and pondered in the warm waters till they grew cold before getting out, getting dressed, and romping down to the tavern proper for food, ale, and socializing.

He'll talk with just about anyone who has a minute or too drunk to realize who he is if they go into a drunken rant. If there's any tradesmen or crafters he'll find out any local knew if possible that might link to why someone would slam several tribes of goblins together to do something and was clever or brutal enough to keep them in line.
OOC:
I guess Aery's from an area like Portland?
May 10, 2017 8:49 pm
Butler moves slightly away from the sleeping pair to continue his conversation with Father Zanthas without disturbing them "Hopefully that will be enough but if there is anything else you can think off that I can do to assist just let me know. I will be staying at the Rusty Dragon"
May 10, 2017 10:36 pm
I'm going to trail the Goblins and see if I can find out any further information. I'll hang back and try to move covertly. I'm trying to find out where they are going.

I'm not taking Jenna with me. I'll send Jenna back to the inn immediately to let the other members of the party know the direction I am moving in so that if they move quickly, they can catch up if they want to. As Jenna and I walked around the town I instructed her in where a ditch could be built and a palisade built to give the town a modicum of defense, with watchtowers built inside the corners to help keep watch and to reinforced the palisade. I ask her to relay the defensive information to the Sherriff the information about the gaps in the militia patrol and my recommendation about fortifications AFTER she has notified Aery, Jimmy, Butler and Darakar of my intentions and whereabouts.

I'm not looking for a fight, I want to stay at extreme range from them or maximum visible range, using stealth and trying to follow them to a general location.

If Jenna comes to my door I'll go with her to the Sheriff. Doubt that he's going to listen to a little girl, even if she's just relaying information but he might be willing to listen to me. Since Alaric wants to get the town fortified maybe I can talk the Sheriff into getting his militia to build the fortifications. It might help if I can get Aery's assistance with drawing up plans for the defenses.

Aery, think you might be able to use your engineering skill to come up with some plans?
OOC:
Any chance we can get a boost toward persuading the sheriff if Aery successfully draws up some plans?

Aery opens the door to his room and yawns considering the hour of night and scratches his side in just a tunic holding a candle holder. His room is littered with notes from talking to the townsfolk about their trade, notes on gossip, and sketches of the area.

"I guess but it took them how long to rebuild the church after the last fire? Between harvests to get people with the know how and the materials for the rebuild. They'd need wood cutters and carpenters to focus on this specifically versus their crops and anything else they're doing for their livelihood even with defenses up though farmers are more likely to jump off the wall versus fight a raiding party worth their salt in truth. I don't think they have time to gather the materials or the man power to make it fully worthwhile though in a short time, it'd be a few months if they stop everything or a long project over a half to full year I figure if the Sheriff is mostly just doing things solo for the area. It'd be a rather long project plus the Sheriff would likely have to train a town guard or conscripts. We could see about something quick and dirty that gets the job done I guess..." Aery states pessimistically before walking away from the door and grabbing a hunk of cheese while looking for blank parchment and quill to scribble some things down.

He mutters to himself about the kinds of trees in the area and dirt sand and gravel plus looks at rough sketches of the town scribbling away and doing a bit of math now and again to figure things out. "It's more likely he'd want us to find out who's behind this all and the raiding parties versus put the villagers in danger just protecting themselves though so keep that in mind." he adds while he looks at some numbers he's scribbled, "You a people person? Talking to people and what not?" Aery asks chewing on another piece of cheese.
OOC:
Rolling to get up make shift barricades for now to funnel attackers into the area a certain way advantageous to the defenders. Aery will look into something more after breakfast for a long term solution. He hasn't really let the others know what he found out so he'll sketch that out considering what they could resolve themselves as a group. Let me know the difficulty for the makeshift barricades and I'll roll, I figure how I roll will go off the quality of the defenses.
May 11, 2017 10:35 pm
Dead men gather no crops and have no concerns for gathering wood. Would the men of this town rather die and have their wives become slaves and their children starve? Carpenters shouldn't be needed. We're talking about cutting down small trees, roughly sharpening with an ax and placing them upright around the town. The women and children can do the lashings of the small crosspieces. They can work half days and still probably put up a rough palisade around the town within a few days, maybe a week depending on the size of the town. The towers will take longer, but we could just build onto the rooftops of existing buildings around the perimeter of the town.
[ +- ] Palisade Definition
OOC:
I'm guessing the reason Alaric recommended a palisade is because it will only take a few days to build, versus taking months to build walls. Of course, we all know that a palisade is not going to stop an army, but it will give defenders time to get set. Digging a ditch outside and lining it with stakes will bring any charge to a grinding halt. The children in the town can sharpen small stakes and set them in the ditch. It all depends on the size of the town, but it shouldn't take too long. Then again, it might just be a waste of time if these goblins aren't going to attack this town again, or if we are just leaving and not returning. I don't see the harm in trying to help the townspeople defend themselves from future attacks.

Aery stops writing and stares at the man as he talks and blinks a few times until he's stated his thoughts on the matter. Aery starts to chuckle quietly before laughing openly for a bit before sighing and wiping a tear away. "You do know using words is sort of my professional. It's like me quoting litany for a morale or ethical impasse to you. You'd suss out the donkey cakes falling from my mouth quite quick." he says with a tired half smile pointing at himself before slipping off his stool and grabbing one of the grenades.

Unwrapping it he hands it to Jimmy to inspect, "Look, You caught one of those big guys swords on fire so I think you know a thing or two about such effects of fire and combustion, and you saw the effects of one of these granted it was on a cart full of alcohol but what do you make of these? You get the picture I'm looking at what defense would you suggest to combat this?

Explosives change what should be done for defenses regardless of they have stronger charges or not, also few people want to see or deal with an injury caused from something like this it's quite horrific. Mind you those were just goblins with crappy weapons and armor when I inspected the bodies, but these; these are definitely not crappy and probably not goblinforged. Why would you let goblins, who by nature will openly stab another goblin from another tribe for looking at them cross eyed just as quickly as any of us be given something like this? To break through something in town? To get to something? I really have no idea but considering it's the only thing I could have come up with really.

Okay so the town decides no it's their town they do what they want they don't build it but lets say they do build a pallisade or rough and tumble get a wall up in a few days made of heavy timbers, if you can see it from afar, it's easy to figure out the weak points and sap a wall collapsing it and rush in. That false sense of security the sudden panic of having to change gears, that's for conscripts and trained men of combat not a few farmers thinking of their families and community. Maybe complicated if it was just goblins but i don't think we're just dealing with just goblins. If what you're suggesting this is enough I agree it's the best move... but the truth is... granted I was going to wait until later this morning and we were all together, but we just don't know. We don't know if this was a scouting force that got greedy and opted to try and raid. Maybe they were searching for something and a more powerful warparty is coming to get it if it's here. Maybe they have something to fly on and snatch up the children. I really have no idea.

I have a lead on where they probably got the materials for those crappy armements for raiding, we've seen the explosives which came from somewhere or someone, and another thing that concerns me the most, this is more than one tribe of goblins; goblins never work together between tribes unless someone bigger and meaner beats them into submission and it's for survival to follow orders."
Aery states frowning a bit feeling like his old tutor and shakes his head, his eyebrows weren't nearly that bushy.

"Watchtowers added to roofs need to be looked at for weight so they can be supported and not cave in the building. Full defensive wall on the perimeter means a water brigade in case fire is launched in." he points out as well.

"We need to figure out who's behind this all and why then put a stop to them doing what they're doing." he finally states nodding to his own words.

"My apologies I haven't gotten much sleep after going over things yet... so I may be a bit dickish." Aery states in self realization.

"We can talk to the sheriff and who all is in charge come the morning and we can give him the plans for where to set up barriers. Ultimately they're going to do what they're going to do and we do what we do." Aery adds stroking his chin.
May 12, 2017 2:17 am
Jimmy raises his hands in mock surrender, smiling at Aery.

Ok, not a big deal. I realize now that I shouldn't have bothered you with this. I'll go with Jenna tomorrow and talk to the Sheriff about it. If he's not interested, so be it. Please don't bother yourself with it any further.

Jimmy holds the explosive carefully as he turns to go back to his room.

Do you mind if I take this bomb back to my room and examine it? I would love to compare notes with you tomorrow and see if we might be able to figure out where these explosives came from and see where things go from there.

Jimmy bows respectfully to Aery.

I should have gone outside of town to examine the explosives rather than inside the inn. I realize that was inconsiderate of me.
After I wake up, I'd like to find Jenna and go talk with the town Sheriff to see if we can convince him of the merits of putting up some rough barricades around the town to at least slow down future attacks rather than let enemies walk right into the town.

Sheriff Hemlock, Alaric followed the Goblins out of town last night. He sent back some information with his daughter Jenna. Jimmy motions to Jenna. This was not just a casual raid sir. There are Goblins from several tribes banded together. Sandpoint is currently a soft target for Goblin attacks because there are no defenses and the town militia, though brave, is in need of more seasoning. Jimmy shows the Sheriff the disassembled bomb. Alaric recommended that we construct a rough palisade around the town. It wouldn't fix everything but would buy precious time for the militia to gather and respond to future attacks. I'm sure that he would be aid you in training your militia when he returns from his scouting trip as well. Sheriff Hemlock, I realize that additional work may not be met with enthusiasm by your townspeople, but for a minimal investment of time, we could help you make your town safer and more secure.
