Scene 1- The Mindbender's Hut

May 4, 2015 3:00 pm
It is a warm summer day. The sun shines down from a clear blue sky. A few cotton puff clouds float lazily high above the forest treetops. Below the trees the sunlight dapples the ground. Forest life is present in droves, beetles scurry along the ground, ants busily gather food for their queens and their brood. A fox lopes between the trees searching for a meal, a group of squirrels chatter high above its head in an ancient oak.

Along a well traveled path, we see a young woman. A human woman who has only this season reached the age of majority. Her lush auburn hair is held back by simple twine and a small wild flower garland she has put together as she walked the path. Her dress is homespun. Simple and plain, it is however sturdy and clean, a testament to its craftsmanship and care. The young woman whistles snippets of a half remembered tune as she walks the path. On her arm she carries a basket, covered by linen cloth. Her bundle bulges under her arm and she shifts it occasionally to keep the weight from straining one arm or the other. A bee trundles up to the basket and attempts to investigate, but is thwarted by a gentle showing from the girl and the shifting of the basket.

The woman comes to a stream, a little wiser than a full stride length, and carefully steps on the larger stones placed to ease crossing. She has reached a small cottage, her apparent destination. She knocks but does not wait for, or receive, a response before entering the structure. Inside, the hut is dimly lit and the air is somewhat musty. The curtains are drawn and the hearth is cold. The woman places the basket on the modest table in the center of the hut and takes a look around. The hut is well appointed and divided into three rooms. The main area has a large comfortable chair and several other pieces of furniture. Five could be seated to chat and be warmed by the modest fireplace on a chilly night. The second room serves as the kitchen. A small oven and wash tub take up a good portion of the room. The rest of the space is filled with shelves holding a nearly impossible amount of bottles, jars, vials, and bundles of dried herbs. Tucked away in the corner is a small half-door that leads to a larder and storage for food stuffs that could spoil. The last room is a bedroom. The fireplace passes through into this room as well to provide warmth to the occupants as they slumber. A pile of threadbare quilts and blankets sit atop the thin but soft looking mattress on the small bed under a small open window that is also covered by curtains.

The hut is in minor disarray, looking as though some careless individual had been living here. There are bottles and canisters strewn about, obviously not in their proper place. The remnants of a meal or two remain on plates. One on the floor near a large comfy chair, another on a side table. When the woman opens the curtains to let the sun's light in, notes of dust dance across the beam of light. A slight smile tugs at the corner of her mouth as she gazes out into the forest. She does not see the gray figure that rises from the bed and shambles toward her.

The gray figure extends a thin, gnarled, bony hand toward the woman as it shuffles forward. Slowly and silently the apparition advances on the girl. The skin on the outstretched hand is pale and leathery, cracked and calloused from years of wear and work. It is a stark contrast to the soft pink flesh of the young woman's shoulder and neck it is reaching out for. As the fingers touch the woman she let's out a sharp cry of surprise and turns quickly to face the gray being.

"Oh! Marta, you startled me." The gray figure, named Marta, is a thin worn woman of advanced, but not ancient, age. Her hair, once waves of gold woven with silver, now hangs limp and unkempt. It frames a face that once was lovely, though average beauty, now lined and wrinkled. Her thin lips are colorless and wide on her face. Marta's sunken eyes are rimmed with dark circles. The once bright green is somehow faded. Her gaze is long and unfocused, staring but unseeing. Marta removes her hand from the young woman's shoulder and looks past her into the trees outside.

[b]"How are you today? Have you eaten yet? Can I get you anything?"
the young woman inquires of the older. "Who...? Marta weakly responds.

A look of concern comes over the young woman. "Marta, its me Sarah. Sarah Clairmont. I've come to check on you and help you clean up a little? I've brought your groceries from the market." With this response, Mart gives no indication that she has heard it, she stares out the window vacantly for a moment, then turns and shuffles over to the large comfy chair.

Sarah sighs, then begins working. First she makes Marta a meal of honey cakes and a few sausages. Then she sets to the task of cleaning and setting things right. Several times she has to remind Marta to continue eating when she finds the older woman just sitting with the plate in her lap as she stares out the window.

((Ooc - I would like each of you to describe what your characters are doing now. For those not from Barrelwaight, you can't tell why but you have all been drawn to this place. You see Sarah approaching Marta, the Mindbending Witch's hut and can get close enough to see the whole scene described unfold from hiding if you wish. Just give a bit of detail about what the familiars would do here. Chocokiko I left Coco out of my description to give you as much freedom as possible. Coco can be in the hut, or wherever you want in this scene. Also, if I need to edit any description of the hut or Marta (including need name - I couldn't find one in your posts or description - just let me know.))

Teasel, the Raven
---
Temporary Aspect(s): A Long Journey's Toll
---
Fate Point(s) 5

Driving eastward as if by wicked purpose, unsettling behavior for one commonly mistaken to be death's harbinger, a stocky corvid flies black gold in the early sunlight. She flits among the treetops and summer wind never resting for more than a moment to ruffle her feathers and catch her breath. The hurried blackbird keeps an eye to the west, in a conspiratorial or clever way, as if aware of some danger no longer immediate. She is the cat hissing at ghosts and the dog crying for the storm brewing beyond the mountains. Only there is no storm brewing this day, and the spirits of this forest are rumored to be kind.

Following the winding path of a small river the raven glides low toward a shabby cottage. At last she takes her rest, touching down on a window ledge of the humble cabin. Peering beyond the threshold she witnesses an older woman listless at her morning meal and a younger maiden at work cleaning house. She wonders what compelled her here, but makes certain not to announce herself for fear that the women might read her arrival as portents of ill luck or of death.

Silver moonlight glints from her eyes casting circles around her black pupils. She cocks her head about searching for hidden answers from the home and it's crowded shelves before retreating to a hidden perch among the forest trees.

Upon arrival of the young woman Coco flutters around her on every step sqawking exitedly. While she prepares the meal he strides up and down the kichen counter, head bobbing and watching her every move. He is very happy for the break in the daily boredom. When the girl is finished with the honeycakes and preparing the saucages he swoops down and steals one right off the plate. He flutters on top of the wardrobe with his prey and starts feasting noisily. Every now and then wisteling some happy notes.
When he satisfied his first hunger he flies over and settels on the shoulder of the young woman thankfully rubbing his head against her cheek. He plays with her hair until she brushes him off.

OOC: I might need some tipps on what to roll and when. But for now its mainly fluff. :-)

Days ago Torbern left Chalcanth’s inverted tower to go to Barrelwaight. Knowing it was the town his Master learned of his final quest he thought it the best place to start a search for clues about what happened. But something else was telling him he needed to head there. Something he didn’t understand but was akin to the draw he sometimes felt towards Ioun stones or large treasure. As he left he decided to approach Fenwick, a former rival’s familiar, who he knew had been lurking for a couple days to see if he wanted to journey together. Torbern remembered Fenwick had skills that he didn’t and thought it would be useful to have him around, and while he wouldn’t admit it he wanted a traveling companion because he is lonely. He had rarely been away from his Masters side and the time alone was beginning to affect him.

The power of the unknown draw had led to this cottage. Torbern hunches lower in the berry bushes as the young human passes by. He isn’t bothered by the brambles as the thorns are too soft to scratch his gem and stone body. His combat instinct kicks in and he carefully scans the surrounding area to determine who or what else is in the area. As the young human enters the cottage, Torbern nudges Fenwick and looks him in the face. Torbern’s expression is a quizzical one with a hairline fracture in a piece of stone comically mimicking a raised eyebrow above his Ioun stone "eyes". His gems flicker dimly as if to say, *What do you think?* Then he points an arm towards the windows that have been uncovered and his eye gems flash conveying *Take a closer look?*

(OOC: Just like Coco I will need guidance on when I should roll, like do you do perception rolls? Also, Torbern currently doesn’t speak in case you didn’t know, this trait may change if my writing isn’t strong enough to support it.)

Torbern and Fenwick stood outside the cottage. It has been awhile since they had the luxury of a roof over their heads, and while Torbern looked as if he could withstand any weather and Fenwick's natural home was the forest, Fenwick had grown fond of living human fashion. Torbern looked at Fenwick inquisitively, pointing at the cottage.

Fenwick washes his hands together evilly, and snarls, muttering "Fire hot, bones split, little maiden's face did rip" and scampers toward the cottage. He points at the door, and then climbs up the side of a woodpile and leaps to the window, dangling by one hand but easily pulling himself up with one hand. His eyes peering inside over the top of the window, he waits for the maiden and the old woman to look elsewhere, and silently creeps inside. He hides behind the furniture and out of their sight, making his way to the door. From the shadows underneath a cupboard, he can see most of the room.

Waiting for an opportunity while the maiden is cleaning and the old woman is eating, he uses his magic to open the door for Torbern, and then closing it behind him.

While Coco is fooling around he nevertheless has an eye on "his" hut and humans. He is very protective.

OOC: So there is a raven on one window and some horned little monstrosity on another. What do I roll to percieve or to oppose the intrusion? I don't see how I could interpret Fenwick's action as friendly...
May 5, 2015 6:29 pm
((For Torbern to sneak into the hut you would simply need to state the action and make a roll+Sneaky. To observe the intruders Coco would roll as well. Careful and Clever jump out at me as the approaches that makes the most sense, however it is the nature of Fate Accelerated to be flexible. I could also accept Sneaky, on the grounds that "It takes one to know one." Meaning a sneaky person naturally uses their knowledge to ferry out other sneaky people (or creatures in this instance. If something else comes to mind however, state your case, if it is logical I will accept it.

As I think about it more, Flashy and Forceful at the only approaches I'm not seeing as useful for observing in this instance. That doesn't mean they can't be used to observe ever, just not now unless you all think of a way to do it that I haven't

Since Coco and Sarah are the potential observers, they will each make their roll and those wishing to remain unobserved will have to roll Sneak to remain hidden.

So far we have Fenwick at +3 to sneak in and Teasel at +2 to sneakily cast a spell. When we get results from Sarah and Coco we will decide the results.))

As Sarah diligently works on bring order back to the hut she can't help but feel like she is being observed. She glances at Marta who is once again staring off into space, then at the bird, Coco, it seems content now that it has eaten and is watching her work, but that isn't the "watcher" she is feeling...

The Captain of the River Swan could not have known it, but the favorable wind that drove his wide, shallow-drafted river vessel faster than she ever had before was wholly unnatural. The River Swan carried fine metalwork of silver and brass. He thanked the gods for the wind for in truth, the captain was eager to reach the capitol. The workmanship of the merchandise was exquisite, and would fetch a tidy sum in Valarin this season. Most vessels with such valuable cargo counted at least one mage in their crew for protection, but the River Swan did not. The captain was a pious man and distrusted the arcane arts. He would have been horrified had he discovered that his thanks to the gods for the rogue wind had been misdirected; he should have been thanking the unnatural stowaway hidden away in his cargo hold. The stowaway, Diginus, a diminutive brass & steel automaton, was a storm mage.

Diginus had been headed for Valarin seeking answers. Months before, his master, the great storm mage Vrexoeis, had been on his way to Valarin when he was killed. By rival mages, it was rumored. Diginus refused to believe it. His master was ancient, wise, and powerful, but kind. True, there were those who would kill for power and riches, but they couldn't have bested Vrexoeis, could they? Diginus sought answers, and he was convinced that Valarin was where the path to answers would begin.

So it made no sense then, that Diginus should quit the River Swan when it stopped at the town of Barrelwaight. No sense at all. But he had felt something...a sliver of something. A trickle of magic, like pollen from a laden bee on its lazy flight home. He followed the trickle inland via a small rivulet that gradually narrowed to a stream and eventually led him here, wherever this was, crouched in the bushes looking at a small hut in the woods. This was no wizard's stronghold, how could magic, no matter how weak, be leaking from here? He gasps inwardly when the trickle of magic becomes the crackle of spells being cast. He sees a door being opened magically, and a strange gem-like thing enter. His curiousity aroused, Diginus edges closer...

As Fenwick is pulling himself up the window he finds a cockatoo stalking up and down the windowsill eying him very closely and suspiciously.

Coco reaches out with his mind giving Fenwick a very *bad* feeling about entering without permission.
Then he will try to get a sense of what drives that strange creature to sneak around his home.

He also noticed the raven on the other windowsill but since it only seems to be watching without the intention to enter he deals with the more important issue first. Also the raven didn't make any attempt of hiding so it seems to have more honest intentions.

((Results so far - Teasel, your spell goes off without any problem. The impression you get is this place is safe. There are numerous wards against evil magic and creatures. It would take a very powerful mage , or other entity, to disrupt the protections on the hut. You don't notice any wards that would specifically target you or your kind. However, the place is claimed by another, a common occurrence and practice among magic users. When a person stays in a place for a long time, builds upon it, and generally thinks of the place as theirs while in it, then it becomes true. Like "Nature" or "Reality" agrees that the magic user does belong there. The end result is that the flow of energy sort of "warps" or "bends" to accommodate their will making magic easier to practice. All of you understand this principal as just one of the basic laws of reality, like how gravity works. You could study it your whole life and your understanding would be immense compared to the next mage, but it would still only be a scratch on the surface of the actual truth.

But I digress, Teasel's spell shows this. The raven's initial though is that it is the older gray woman, but she reads as magically inert. The younger woman has power, but it is fledgling and more or less untapped. Then there is the big white bird, it is similar to the raven itself, in that it too was once a familiar. The wards on this place were not cast by this, though it now holds the claim on this place. That is something unheard of in your understanding, but then again, so are you. Your master perished, the pieces you brought back passed on and in bringing them back you managed to keep a small portion of your master with you, but the conduit between you was severed and you should have either died or reverted back to your primitive, animal state.

However, while you magic works, it is noticed. Both the white bird and the girl look directly at you. Without reacting though they both turn away. Something else has caught their attention, you are unsure what it is though.

How does "Hospitable, but weary" sound for the success? If Coco welcomes you it will change.))

((I have results for Fenwick coming but am having issues posting it. Give me a couple hours and then we can continue.))
May 7, 2015 2:24 am
((This is for everybody who is new to Fate or wants to peer behind the screen a little. If you are a Fate Pro you can skip to the end and find the little recap. So Fenwicks action was to sneak inside the hut and remain hidden. Essentially what he did was the Create Advantage action using his Sneaky Approach. His results totaled +3 (in the book they use a word to describe every number from -4 to +8 but I haven't bothered to learn them, I just know how successful a roll is based on the actual number. If you want to learn the list more power to you, but it just gives you an idea of how cool the action should be described, the number is what is important for me ).

So Fenwick has his +3 (Sneaky +4 and the -1 from the dice). I told him he would have to beat the highest roll of Coco or Sarah. Normally there would only be one number to beat but we are in the "forming the party" scene so I wanted to give Coco(Chicokiko) to roleplay a bit (and everyone else I guess) onceyou all are "friends" it should be one-on-one, unless things get crazy. So...had Fenwick only been trying to beat Coco he would have been succesful and Created an Advantage like "Hidden" or something with a free Invoke. This can be seen at Fate-SRD.com under the Outcomes section. On the next turn if Coco had continued looking for Fenwick, Coco would make Overcome action rolls using his desired approach and Fenwick would make Defend action rolls. Fenwick could spend his Fate Points to Invoke the "Hidden" advantage he had created on the first roll (or used his free Invoke) to gain either a +2 bonus or a re-roll. We would continue until Fenwick were found or Coco gave up searching (or something else happened, but this is just an example).

Unfortunately for Fenwick he had a superior observer working against him in the form of Sarah and she is going to act in a manner that will giveaway his hiding spot as you read this. He is free to try pretty much any action he wants, or to just reveal himself and see what happens, but hiding from sight will require something else to happen that will distract Sarah and Coco from the tiny intruder (a spell perhaps?).

So, the RECAP Sarah sees Fenwick when he attempts to cast the spell that will open and close the door for Torbern. Torbern has the option to enter or not, but he will be seen right now if he does.))

"Oh, hello, little fairy-kin, I did not see you come in. Ya needn'a hide beneath the cupboard there. Come out and have some refreshment, unless'n ya mean some mischief. We'll'a have none of that, please." And she goes to the cupboard and finds the cream and pours some into a small cup she retrieves from another shelf. Then sets it down on the floor near Fenwick.
May 7, 2015 6:38 pm
Torbern wonders at why Fenwick would need to rip the humans face, perhaps it’s a ritual for the spell to open the door. It seems like quite a messy method but each mage has their own style. As Fenwick skillfully enters the house through the window Torbern makes his way to the door. The human that entered wasn’t the source of the pull that brought them to this cottage. He began to wonder what was, a powferul mage calling out for a new familiar? A magic item attune with the source of his power? Perhaps a treasure trove of magic items were hidden under this cottage and are calling for a new master to claim them! As his greed causes his mind to wander he goes unaware of the automaton watching him from the bushes.

The door begins to open slowly and Torberns focus returns, as he prepares to sneak inside as best he can he hears a pleasant voice say, "Oh, hello, little fairy-kin…" a brief panic washes over him and causes him causing him to miss what else is said. His ally has been spotted and may be in danger, especially if he had to be aggressive and rip that humans face for his spell. Torbern thinks of what his master would want him to do in a situation like this. Prepare for a fight, "Cast when you can," his master would say, "for when the fray starts you may not get a chance." He decides it best to do just that while causing a distraction, in case Fenwick is surrounded. He charges through the now closing door and focuses his thoughts to gather arcance energy in his fists creating a flash of light and the crackle of power to draw his potential enemies attention.

"Oh!" Sarah exclaims and backs away from the newly placed cup of cream. She raises her hands defensively, unsure what to make of the pretty little gemstone creature that just burst through the door. "Wo-Would you be a friend of the wee fae then? Stand down and be welcomed. No harm will come to you here, less you bring it upon yourself."
May 7, 2015 7:20 pm
The pleasant voice has spoken yet again, this time Torbern listens to it all and hears the claim of being welcome if he stands down. Keeping his back to a wall to ensure he isn't taken by surprise he lowers his guard a hair and scans the room for Fenwick.
May 7, 2015 9:03 pm
Fenwick, starting to ease out from under the cupboard to the proffered cream, is startled by the sudden mini-storm and defensively hides back under the cupboard. As tensions cease, he suspiciously returns to the cream, dips a finger in and tastes it. "Little maiden has survived for now, fear be to those who sleep with closed eyes." He drinks deeply and shudders with delight, before thinking to offer Torbern some with a baleful glare.

Fenwick then clambers onto the table and stares suspiciously at the Sarah and her white bird, rubbing his hands together nervously.
May 8, 2015 10:47 am
Perched in boughs bent low over the roof of the crowded cottage Teasel hears some commotion from the odd travelers creeping and careening about the, until now, unassuming place. She flutters back to the window sill to look around with some surprise at a faun, crystal golem, and bird--appearing similar to her only in the most basic characteristics of its form. "Why how strange a sight..." she lets slip in the common tongue before realizing her proximity to those who might otherwise assume her an ordinary bird. Like she ought to be, she thinks uneasily reflecting on her twisted master.
May 8, 2015 11:11 am
Coco comes from the other window and lands on the young woman's shoulder again. He cocks his head embarrased that he didn't see any faun slipping in. His feather crest raised to maximum height.
He seems bothered by the fact that he is not the center of attention and starts singing sqawkingly.

"What was that, Marta? Sarah gasps at hearing the old woman speak. She goes over to her chair as the former Mindbender and healer raises an arm and points at a window. In the ledge out side sits a raven. The animal is clearly watching what happens inside the hut. Odd behavior indeed. Sarah walks over to the window and carefully opens it to give the raven access.

All the wards & defenses placed on the hut, particularly the door, intrigue Diginus so much that his curiosity gets the better of him. He teleports himself to just outside the door to get a better look but is immediately greeted by the sight of the strange gem-creature (whose back is towards him) preparing for battle.

"Oh!" Diginus gasps, and one of the pewter plates strewn about on the table immediately flies to him and he holds it defensively before him like a shield. Taking in the rest of the room, he doesn't quite know what to do.

OOC: I might have needed to roll for some of that action. Please let me know if that is the case :-)

"My aren't we blessed to have so many visitors today. I invite you in as long as you promise to behave. But what could be bringing such strange creatures as these here, do'ya think Marta?"

The old woman just sits and stares out her window as if she doesn't realize there is anyone else in the room. Sarah sets a footstool out in a clear spot not far from the door and begins to set a cup of cream for each of the new arrivals down. Quickly she realizes the creature of stone and the creature of metal may not like cream. Then she looks at the raven, again, unsure of what to do. She waits suspended for a moment then just finishes her original action and sits down at the kitchen table to see what happens.
May 16, 2015 12:53 am
With a belly full of cream, the feral faun stalks over until he is in the sight of the old woman. He pulls out a small set of pipes, and plays a few dischordant notes. "Tell us, nearly dead one, what is the power here. It draws us, and we must know." He begins to play a small haunting lullaby, rising and falling with the notes in a mockery of the notes. As the lullaby plays on, he begins to play faster and faster, dancing freely as he plays, evoking the hidden freedom of the forest, and smiles at the old woman and her servant girl, charming them with his antics.

Marta however remains unmoved. The music and it's magic don't seem to touch her at all. Marta simply stares out the window. Over head, a shape passes between the sun and the ground. Its probably a cloud, but Marta's expresion changes to one of fear while the cloud makes the sky darken. After it passes her exprsion retturns to normal.
May 17, 2015 4:09 pm

There is a comotuon as several wild birds flee to the sky, and moments later a group of deer and several families of hare bound into and through the clearing. A sound, like a roar from several predatory beasts trying to call in chorus, fills the air. Coco and Teasel have a flash of unexplained dread wash over them, but it fades quickly. Diginus, Torbern and Finwick have an unexplainable deja vu. The roar envokes some half remembered dream in all of the familiars. Diginus is unable to resist tweaking the weather vane on the roof a tiny bit (the pivot is slightly rusted, and so the vane is off by a few degrees). He spends half a moment on the minor adjustment and lets it go at that, however, as he senses that something of import is happening around the hut. He teleports back into the house and addressing Sarah, who seems to be in charge here, and Fenwick & Torbern, the only creatures he is certain possess magic, he says, "Pardon me, but something seems to be happening. Please forgive my lack of manners...I have not introduced myself...but it seems we haven't time for manners just now."
May 18, 2015 4:43 pm
Fenwick, having darted under Marta's chair at the word "Dragon", peeks out from underneath. "I am Fenwick, that is Torbern," he says, pointing exaggeratedly at himself and then at the gem construct. He puts away his pipes and crawls onto the arm of Marta's chair and peers into her eyes. "This one is speakings of brother." He turns and faces the door, and crouches aggressively.
May 18, 2015 5:17 pm
Fenwick intrigues Diginus the most, as it the fawn who had used magic on the door. Was it perhaps this one who had left the trail of magic that he had followed? "I am Diginus," he says , studying the fawn. At length he turns his attention to the old crone.

Torbern struggles to take in all that has happened in just a few moments. Five odd creatures had gathered at this hut, and each had shown to be more than they appear. The young human certainly hadn't been the one to summon them and the old one seemed disconnected from this realm. Now something had passed overhead, perhaps something else drawn to whatever magic had lured these little creatures here. Or, perhaps, it was what had lured them here. Its roar is eerily remembered and yet Torbern is certain he has never heard anything like it before. He begins to pace the room to gain a better understanding of his surroundings, all the while being careful to keep up the arcane charge in case whatever is outside decides to pay a closer visit. As Fenwick gestures in Torberns direction and states his name he gives a quick salute to the odd construct that had followed him through the door. This Diginus has shown itself to wield impressive magic but was fortunately not an aggressor. Torbern then looks to the windows to see what has become of the two birds.

Coco swoops in again, picks up the cup by the handle and flaps his wings furiously struggeling to lift the teapot. Finally he hovers it high over the sink and lets it splash into the water filled sink sending drops flying.
Then he lands on the table again and walks up and down the table. He doesn't talk but he sends waves of welcoming feelings to the new arrivals. After some seconds everyone feels an unspoken question floating across the room while Coco sqwawks and bobs his head.
In his eyes still glints a little spark of suspicion but as the new arrivals don't seem to be threatening any more he puts that aside for now.
"Coco wants Bisquit!"
May 20, 2015 4:32 pm
The black bird enters Marta's home cautiously advancing on the bowl of cream. A deep rumbling whines in her empty stomach until the bird's caution gives way to her hunger. Diving beak first into the bowl as an unsettling shadow passes overhead, Teasel pulls back from the milk just as suddenly. Teasel looks about worriedly, ivory droplets sputtering from her beak. "I am called Teasel," she all but whispers in introduction to the others. "You don't seriously mean we should run about investigating dragons, metal-one?" She shakes her head indignantly as if to say no, no, no, not this bird!
May 20, 2015 6:12 pm
Diginus registers Torbern's odd salute & awkwardly returns it. To Teasel he says, "I'm not at all sure what we should be doing. To be honest, I don't know what possessed me to come here in the first place. I was on my way elsewhere on other business. As for dragons, not all dragons are cruel, though all dragons certainly need to be feared."

Diginus teleports onto the table. He puts the pewter plate down carefully and absently hands Coco a biscuit. He ponders: it might have been a mistake to come here. "I am curious, my new friends, what brought you here?"
May 20, 2015 6:38 pm
What am I doing here? Fenwick considers the oddity for a moment, momentarily unsure what is happening. With a shake, he dismisses the uncharacteristic introspection and instead looks at Torbern suspiciously. "This one did it. His fault we came." His ears remain directed at the door, beyond which, he fears, is something terrible.
May 22, 2015 2:51 am
"Sis...Sister? You've changed... Marta seems to come alive like you've not seen her do, for Coco it at first seems his old master has returned to herself, except the connection is still gone. She continues to adress the raven. "OH! HAHAHAHA...I SEE! You figured it out to, did you! Clever girl. Our brother and his mad quest! He needed our magics, all of our magics." she says indicating Finwick and Torbern, "In order to claim The Dragon of Brass's horde and claim his treasure." Here she turns to Diginus, "And it seems even the dragon itself got in on the game. Good. Our brother has become an evil man. He seeks the secret of Apotheosis, to become a god in his own right. He learned he needed the three magics of life, Body he possessed himself. Mind and Soul he never had the talent for so he attempted to steal from us. The Dragon held the key, though I can't say if it even knew the treasure it held. But he couldn't do it alone. He needed help. It seems he found it with the Solidarity. He betrayed you though didn't he? Yes, I know, his treachery knows no limits." Another roar peels through the forest, shaking the house. "He comes, my wards grow weak. We five must ban together now and defeat him. Otherwise he will become a scourge on this world unlike anything we have yet to imagine. But...I am tired. I need to sit down, just for a moment...I...Sarah? Child you have grown. How long has it been? Your parents are well? Oh I need to make their medicine to keep their strength up...I need...I nee...my book. I took it from The Dragon you know. Heh-heh...that was an adventure... I...so many years..."

With that the old woman sits back down and she slumps back into the slack position from before. The light of intelligence fades quickly. The hut trembles again as the beast outside calls. With Marta's revelation, each familiar recalls a little more of the final day of their master. They see a man, bare chested, brown skin, black hair just beginning to gray, at that temples and peppered throughout. He is the peak of masculine human condition. He is covered in black tattoos all over his bare torso. The symbols form a trap that let's energy in but holds it until he decides to release it. He is casting a spell in this memory, one meant to steal the knowledge of the others and bend it to his will. A large python drapes his shoulders and its gold eyes seem to look at each familiar, through the dream. Its predatory gaze pierces the veil of time it seems.

The man intones a spell and the world goes dark for a moment. When the moment passes each of you realizes that you just witnessed the moment of your masters' deaths. That man was responsible, and the which tells you he is to the south. He has shattered your existence and seeks to take more from you now. What will you do?
May 22, 2015 6:10 am
Diginus emerges from his vision with a jolt. Somehow he senses that the others have just experienced similar visions. That this is what connects them. His master's killer! If that is what roars in the woods then it is fearsome indeed! Even more so if it bested mighty Vrexoeis! How can Diginus face such a foe? Vrexoeis did not create him for battle. Diginus fixed things, and opened portals for the powerful beings that served his master. Perhaps those beings would aid him?...but he banishes the ridiculous thought. It seems hopeless. And yet it appears he now has allies. He looks carefully at them. "My friends, it seems we now have some clue as to what our purpose here might be..." Diginus pauses. So many puzzle pieces! He needs time to think. "The old lady seems to know much, but the knowledge is jumbled up. If we only had a way to probe her mind we might learn something valuable."

Fenwick dabs spittle from Marta's chin with a piece of her own garment. We he turns back to the room, his eyes glisten with tears, but his face is drawn back in a fierce grin. His little body veritably shakes with rage and the entire cabin is buffeted by unseen forces, which cause the plates to rattle, and hair and feathers to ruffle. Mastering himself, he says "Fenwick thought ... but no it was him!" pointing to the south. "Dragon soars high is fearsome to behold, but when he passes over he best look out from below."
May 29, 2015 10:55 am
Diginus ponders Marta's words and thinks out loud, trying to put the puzzle pieces together: "Marta has (or had) a brother and a sister. The brother has gone mad, consumed by greed. This is the man in our visions, who killed our masters. The Brass Dragon...could that mean my master, Vrexoeis? The evil brother covets the dragon's treasure, and seeks the key...."

Diginus trails off when he realizes that if this Brass Dragon does in fact refer to Vrexoeis then the key may very well refer to him, oh dear! He shakes his head, recovering, and continues: "Or it may mean a different dragon altogether. Now five must join forces to fight him. What five? Could it be coincidence that the five of us have been drawn here?"

Diginus speaks to Sarah and Coco, "Now Marta needs her book, she says. Do you know what that means?" and to the others, "He comes, she said, and her wards grow weak. It seems you may get your fight after all, Torbern. But this foe bested all our masters. Perhaps we should all flee until we learn more?"

"Oh! A book? Do you mean that ancient tome she kept all of her recopies in? It...it's here somewhere."

Standing near the fireplace is an old pedestal. It is covered in way from many candles that burned low on it. Somehow this old tarnished piece of furniture is made more distinguished by its over use. However there is no book resting upon it.
May 31, 2015 3:15 pm
Diginus helps Sarah search the place for the book. He glances up at Coco, "Any idea where this book might be, Coco? Can you tell us if we're getting colder or warmer?"

As he helps rummage, Diginus continues talking to the entire group, "Forgive me, but since it appears we are meant to be in this together, then I would like to get a better idea of what each one of us is capable of. A machine only works when you know how the cogs fit together. I can tell our friend Torbern here is a fighter. That is good if we are to stay here and fight whatever is coming through those woods. I fix things, and you have all seen me teleport. I may be of assistance if we all decide it would be better to flee."

Torbern is slow to shake himself of the vision. Unsure if he imagined it or if it was summoned from deep inside him he, for a moment, felt as though his connection to his master had returned. Hoping to stretch that feeling out he remained dazed as long as he could. But the world does not wait for those who live in the past. The thing outside was connected to his masters killer, perhaps is his masters killer. It wants in and is fighting to get through the wards. This is what Torbern was built for and if he had heard right Fenwick correctly he would have support. He needed information on what the enemy was capable of. Perhaps this book Diginus was looking for would help. The best course of action Torbern decided was to shore up the huts defenses. He slowly walked to the door and placed his uncharged fist on it. He pulled from the power deep inside him and cast a silent spell to put a barrier of energy over the door. Then turned to do the same for the windows.

The white bird Coc begins squawking and flying around the house pulling books from shelves and dropping them on the floor. Fenwick Diginus and Sarah are forced to dodge to avoid being hit."Find the book, find the book" he chants.
It takes some time but eventually Fenwick discovers a false bottomed shelf. The panel slides away kicking up a small cloud of dust. Inside there is a large leather bound time that is stained by cancel wax and worn with age. The tattered pages are coming unglued front the binding so it must be lifted carefully.. additionally there is a small bundle wrapped in a silk cloth.

"This is it. This is the book Marta always used while making her spells." Sarah exclaims.
"YES! BOOK OF SPELLS" Coco screeches.

Outside the roar is louder. There is a noise...like a tone to low to really hear, like bass rattling your bones. Then a wave of could smelling air hits you and you know, Marta's wards have fallen. Torbern has constructed his own. But will they hold? The beast is crashing through the woods getting closer.

Diginus, you identify there is a door in the kitchen that leads away from the beast's approach.

What do you do? Stay and fight or flee to safety?

((Sorry for the delay again...life. Anyway, you have, what you are certain is Martas book that she talked about. I will tell you this...the beast outside is not unbeatable, a challenge (I hope) but not to much. But it doesn't have to be beaten now. This is a decision you all have to make. Splitting the party is doable as well...though not advised.
Jun 5, 2015 3:42 pm
Torbern hurries to the table. He gets his hands under one of its legs and flips it on its side. He is preparing an inner barricade. He looks to the others to see if they will join him in his plan to fight.
Jun 5, 2015 3:55 pm
Diginus says to Torbern grimly, "If we are going to fight this thing then I suggest we do it outside, leaving Sara and Marta inside where it's safer. If it should go poorly I will try to take them away from here. Agreed?"
Jun 6, 2015 2:29 am
Fenwick dances with the book, and then drops it on the table and forgets it. He stands by Torbern. "This bad spot for little fauns. If we's attack, I distract it and then go side and try and not get eaten by hungry teeth. When its back is to the house, then you kill it from behind, yes?"
Jun 8, 2015 2:22 pm
Diginus picks up Marta's book and pushes it into Sarah's hands. "Look after Marta and the book. If this thing threatens to overwhelm us I will take you both to safety." He then nods to Torbern and teleports out to the front yard. Diginus is afraid. He has never fought anyone or anything before! He suddenly wishes his former master was here to protect them. Oddly, he feels exhilarated as well. "I'm my own master now!" Untrained in battle he may be, but he feels an unfamiliar excitement for the impending fight. Perhaps it is the prospect of avenging Vrexoeis in some small way. Or perhaps it is the old dragon's essence-shard inside him that is itching for the fight. Already, blue lightning is crackling about him. Diginus wonders again if any of the storm elementals that once aided Vrexoeis would come to his aid as well. He reaches out with his mind, opening a portal to their world...

[OOC: How do I do this? Do I roll something or does the Stunt just happen? I never did work out the cost of this. Is this when I spend a Fate point?]

Since the summoning is part of your Magic extra this would be a Create Advantage action. Choose your Approach and roll the dice. The difficulty is just a 0...so get a 1 or better and you have a Summoned Elemental aspect for the scene, a 0 means you succeed at a cost. You then can describe the elemental fighting with/for you in the scene. It will work just like any other aspect, invoke it for a +2 to your roll or a re-roll, and because it is your summoned creature there will be a lot of room to invoke it...you can command it to do just about anything an elemental of its type could conceivably do. (And of course a 3 gets you free invokes as normal for extraordinary results)
Jun 9, 2015 2:42 pm
There is a resounding crash of trees falling and a large form comes bounding out of the trees. Its body is that of a large tawny lion, its fur gleams as it the sunlight hits it. Its golden mane full and majestic. On its shoulders sit two more heads. One is a viscious black dragon. Its thickly scaled neck cranes high and green fumes slip from its nostrilfs on the end of its snout, hunting at the poison breath it could unleash. The other head is a giant black ram. Its alien red eyes glare witeh rage and malice, the heavy horns on its head promise a crushing end to anything that opposes its will. Two large black leathery wings lay folded against the beasts back. The fur on the lion's back parts just at the home quarters and turns into green scales. Where its tail should be is a huge green and black viper...the one from your vision!

Once more the creature bellows a call for battle. The cry of the the three discordant beasts is nearly deafening.

((Ooc...Jabes. I realize I should have waited for you to roll to summon your elemental before having Chimera crash onto the scene. Please roll for it still and that will not take your action for the first round round.))

Scene aspect anyone can invoke (with Fate points as usual): Residual Ward Energy, Kind Forest Spirits, Sturdy Old Cottage(Sturdy is thanks to Torbern's ward a few posts back), & Recently Fallen Trees
Jun 9, 2015 7:24 pm
Diginus reaches out to the Storm Lords. "Hear my call, Sons of the Tempest. It is I, Diginus, chosen of Vrexoeis. Aid me!"

The portal opens and a being of roiling wind and forked lightning appears. It salutes Diginus with its lightning bolt sword and turns towards the incoming chimera.

It occurs to Diginus that the best way for him to contribute to this battle is to distract the chimera while his elemental ally attacks it. He teleports to the chimera's left, then to its right, now in front, now off to the side again, jumping around quickly to confound the monster as the storm elemental charges in with a rush of wind and a peal of thunder.

As soon as Dignius starts distracting the chimera, Fenwick realized that his first plan, to distract the creature by attracting the first attack, seems to be unnecessary. His instinct is to find somewhere under cover from which he can assault the creature's unprotected rear and side. His little eyes spot the knocked over trees, perfect for a little creature to lurk in. He darts out of the cottage toward the Recently Fallen Trees, hoping to find a great spot to hide in the brush from which he launch his attacks.
I'm going to use a stunt to compel an aspect, and hope for an outrageous advantage to a later sneak attack.

So just let me know if this is an Attack or Create Advantage roll and we will be fine. If you wish to use an invoke from the elemental put that in the Scene 1 thread, posting as the player so I know it is an OOC comment.
OOC: Let's lock this in as Create Advantage so that everyone can use it :-) I will use my next action to have the Elemental make the actual Attack.
Jun 21, 2015 3:47 pm
((OK...then you have both successfully created advantages."Distracted by Diginus" has one free Invoke right now Fenwick's "Hidden in the Fallen Trees" had a whopping +7 result so I'm going to call that a success with Style and it has two free Invokes as well, so super sneak attack all lined up I would say!. I consider it bad form to attempt to Overcome these kinds of Advantages before they've been in play for a turn so Chimera will be attacking Diginus because he is putting himself at risk. Make your defense roll. You do not have to use any Invokes before you roll you can wait to see your result then am end your message to get the +2 bonus or re-roll. Once Diginus/Jabes has Defended it will be your turns again to attack or whatever else you might want to do.))
Jun 21, 2015 3:55 pm
The beast snarls, growls, bleats and hisses its disdain for the little metal man jumping and flashing around it. The burst of light that accompanies each teleportation causes the beast to flinch, making it in prepared for the next place Diginus appears. However, this beast is an apex predator and its instincts kick in and it lunges for Diginus. The dragon and lion heads bite in unison then the rams head and viper lash out!

((Make two defense rolls. Invoke Distracted by Diginus after you get your results if you want to...you don't have to. It gives you either +2 or a reroll.))

((So that's a 3 and a 1 total comeing at you.))

Trying his best to time his attack with the enraged beasts own movements, Fenwick waits for an opening when the four (FOUR!) heads are lunging at Dignius. As the heads teeth flash in the sunlight, he quells his sudden alarm for Dignius' safety and focuses his inner fire. He concentrates and uses his force magic to fling a thick broken-ended tree limb from the tumble of fallen trees into the unprotected flank of the Chimera in a hopefully tender area.

Rolls

Sneakily (+4) attack the Chimera from the Fallen Trees (+2)

2 Positive, 0 Blank, 2 Negative - Total: +0

Diginus flashes out of existence just in time to avoid the gnashing teeth of the lion and dragon heads. The goat and snake are even slower to react when Diginus appears in range. When Diginus disappears the second time he reappears among some of the fallen branches nearby. Chimera looks around confused and disoriented. As if seeing the storm elemental for the first time Chimera pulls back defensively but prepares to spring at it when suddenly a large limb strikes out at. The person responsible is unseen, the little faun knows how to hide.

((Jabes...your defenses both beat the attacks by three or more so you get a boost for the next round for succeeding with style. This is a +2 bonus per sucess, but only on your next action (a very temporary aspect)...we'll call it "Diginus in the leaves" or something like that...so your next attack gets a +4 against Chimera. Normally the boost only against the attacker that failed to hit you, so it would be a +2 against one person, but this is a special situation.))

Rolls

Chimera's Quick (+1)defend against Fenwicks Attack

1 Positive, 1 Blank, 2 Negative - Total: -1

Jun 21, 2015 9:35 pm
Chimera prepares to lunge at the elemental, but the wound it received from Fenwick's attack is more severe than it first realized. The broken branch tore through the thick lions hide making up the hind quarters of the beast. The branch has snapped off leaving a large shard of wood in Chimera's hindquarter. Chimera tries to leap into the attack but the sudden jolt of pain makes it falter.

(So Chimera has 2 armor against physical damage. That reduces the stress to four...still enough to stress it out so I will assign that damage to the moderate consequence box. A good solid hit. Chimera is not happy about this))
Jun 23, 2015 7:56 am
Seeing Diginus hard pressed, the storm elemental steps in and slashes at the chimera with its lightning bolt sword. Sparks fly overhead and thunder rolls outward into the distance. High winds spiral around the yard, whipping leaves and twigs and other small debris.

The beast barely has time to react! It's attention had been in the little metal automaton, the elemental's attack catches it off guard.

Chimera's Quick (+1)defend against elemental attack

0 Positive, 1 Blank, 3 Negative - Total: -3

Jun 23, 2015 4:49 pm
((So, that is a +5 vs. -2 , a difference of 7 stress for Chimera. And because this attack is elemental energy, no armor to reduce it. I'm going to apply this to the Severe Consequence as "Electrical Burns" that will stick around for some time. If you face Chimera again you will be able to invoke that as an aspect against it. So it takes one Physical stress to its stress track))

There is a peel of thunder and smoke and the smell of seared flesh fills the air. Chimera's multiple heads roar and bleat in pain. The beast scrambles and claws itself away from the elemental. It shudders and howlls again and the snake tail tears itself away from the beast and it slithers into the underbrush. The brief glimpse you get of it tells you it is the same snake from your shared vision. That serpent is likely fleeing to tell its master what it has found. The three headed beast that was being possessed by the snake makes a final ineffectual swipe at the elemental then takes flight. The familiars find themselves standing outside the hut in an eerily quiet forest, but slowly the sounds of life return.
Jun 23, 2015 11:40 pm
Fenwick waits for a few moments, then sneaks out of the brush. Alarmed at being so close to the sudden violence and the danger that represents, he watches furtively for the snake to return, but creeps his way toward Dignius. He looks him over a couple of times suspiciously, and then grins and pulls out his pipes.

The faun dances and cavorts his way back into the hut to check on the old woman.
Jun 24, 2015 4:44 am
The elemental salutes, and with a rush of wind and a final flash of lightning, departs for its home plane, leaving only the scent of petrichor. Diginus sensrs residual ward energies around the hut and wonders if he can use them to remake the defenses, but decides it might be better for all of them to leave this place. He turns and follows the music of Fenwick's pipes.
Jun 27, 2015 8:05 pm
Inside the familiars find Sarah has moved Marta into the kitchen and is holding a large kitchen knife at the ready to defend them.

"Is...is it gone? Are we safe?'
Jun 29, 2015 1:53 pm
Seeing the knife, Fenwick squeaks and darts under the cupboard. "Safe for now, yes. We's defeated it. But it's master flee'd and will come back and slits our throats." Two large eyes peek out from under the cupboard. "What must we do?"
Jun 30, 2015 1:12 pm
Sarah puts the knife down on the table but hesitates to remove her hand. "I do'nae know wee warrior. Marta said the answer lies within her book here. I tried to look for answers while ye fought that beast, but I could'nae make sense of it. At least not right now, maybe with time."

"SQWACK!! Coco knows! Must find key, YES! Master did say, find key. Part of us , key is, but not all! Not all here! Black bird gone. Magic rock thing, GONE!"

It is then you notice that indeed, Teasel and Torbern are no longer inside the hut.

"Find them, must we? YES! Assemble key to the key. Then get other key from dragon. Key of Apotheoses. Only way to stop Kirius, master of Chimera. Kirius is godlike now. But not whole. He did not steal all of what he needed and now he is broken. Powerful yes, but in pain, vulnerable to the power of The Key. It will either fix him or destroy him. The ones who hold it may choose.

"So, find others, you must. Help the child I will. Learn, we will, how to use key to the key. Yes?"

Fenwick climbs/levitates up onto the table and creeps over toward Sarah, like a spider on a web. With baleful eyes and teeth showing, he approaches the book. His hand reaches slowly out to the book, and then snatches it and scurries to the other side of the table, glaring at the bird and the woman. He approaches Dignius and holds the book out for both of them, flipping through the pages. The book is upside down in his hands, his eyes darting back and forth between the big people and the loud bird.

"Yes, yes, we sees. Okay we fix everything." He scowls some more, and then stops, and flips a couple pages back. "Waits! We are The Key? Bird and Fenwick must tear off flesh and fit in lock? But where is lock? We must reads this but it not making sense." He frowns and mumbles. "Terrible bird wants take Fenwicks flesh and bones but I'll show him tearing and rending and grinding."
Jun 30, 2015 5:58 pm
"SQWAUK! No flesh, NO BONES!. Magic, souls, mind, tied to bones and flesh they are, but used they can be, to activate The Key, but taken from you, they will not. Used to save from suffering, lives of many."

The large white bird flutters down next to Diginus so he is looking at the book the right way. He cocks his head sideways and reads the page the book is open to. HE ruffles the feathers on his neck and his yellow plumage stands up, then he takes a taloned foot and gently turns back about twenty pages. Apparently this isn't the page he wants and he uses his wing to push another few pages over.

Now you see the design of a great device. It is simple in design yet intricate in detail. There are notes all over the page but they seem to be written in a code of some sort. One note however is in plain language.
"Rumor says the Dragon of Brass has the Key of Apotheoses in his hoard. If true, does it know what it has? Will it try to use The Key if it knows?" These words are clearly written in the same hand as the rest of the notes, but it is at a slant, like it was just a random thought hastily scrawled.

Diginus you recognize the drawing of The Key, your master has that tucked away somewhere you are sure.

"This device. I know where to find it. But first we must assemble the first key. And I don't think we can do that without Teasel and Torbern. Where have they disappeared to?"
Jun 30, 2015 7:07 pm
"The raven flew ou' the window when the battle started. The lit'le rock creature followed, beyond tha'I can'nae say. They were too quick."

Fenwick shakes his head. "No no no! This is too much for poor Fenwick. Loud bird wants Fenwick's soul, but Fenwick does not have soul, little girl in market always used to say that when tooks her cookie." He claps his hands over his pouch, ducks his head and looks at Sarah guiltily. "Um, bought cookie I always bought the cookie. But now blackbird and Torbern Fenwick-friend have runs away with their souls for The Key. It too much."

Fenwick straightens out and sighs and hands the book to Dignius. "Fenwick always fetches."
Jul 6, 2015 4:40 am
"Fenwick, you're good at finding things, right? And you said you and Torbern have traveled together before. Think: where might he have gone? With any luck Torbern and Teasel will still be together. You can do it, Fenwick! You can help us find them!"

Suddenly the familiars notice, directly under the window that Sara said the others left through, a small shiny pebble. It appears to have an oily sheen on it that makes the otherwise dull gray show up in the shadows inside the hut. It is teardrop shape and rounded on all sides. As you approach you can see that it is turning, nearly imperceptibly, back and forth. The point of the teardrop points beyond the wall of the hut as it wavers slowly.

Fenwick nods at Dignius. "If Torbern is at the market, Fenwick will fetch him."

Fenwick approaches the teardrop and sniffs it. He then places his hand over the object tentatively waiting for a jolt or burn. If he doesn't come to any harm from that, he will then pick up the teardrop and then turn it around so it is pointing in the other direction and then release it, wondering if it will turn freely in his palm.

The stone does nothing upon being touched and but Fenwick can feel gentle resistance as he turns the stone. When he let's it go it flips back to its original orientation. You do notice however that the back-and-forth motion has stopped nearly completely.

((If it isn't clear the motion also indicates kind of a range. As Torbern gets farther away, the distance he travels left and right has a smaller affect on the stone. Its not exact obviously, you have no from of reference for how far Torbern has gone, only the general direction. As you get closer to him with the stone it will become more accurate. The only thing you know for sure is that he travelled on foot before so he probably hasn't gotten very far.))

"We follows the stone. It must be a part of Torbern. Maybe his elbow." He looks at Sarah and Marta and ponders for a moment. "Best leave nearly dead one and flee. The beast may come back and eat everyone it finds." He nods grimly. "Or take her and do your best," the last, nearly kind words falling clumsily from his small mouth.

Fenwick heads for the door, beckoning Coco and Dignius to follow him. He holds the stone up to check the direction, and sets off.
Jul 8, 2015 7:02 am
"Wait," Diginus calls to Fenwick "We can't take Marta and Sarah with us...it may be too dangerous. But we can't just leave them here either. Sarah, is there somewhere safe for you to hide Marta? Somewhere no one would look?

Diginus wonders briefly if he should take them to the Sky Citadel. But it would be too long and dangerous a journey.
Jul 8, 2015 4:47 pm
"I don'na know of any place secret, but me ma and pa will help. They are well enough to work thanks to Marta. Tha's the best I can think of right now. An' I've picked up a few tricks. I can set up a ward that should buy us enough time to get out if the beast comes back. But I think Marta meant he was after you lot. Whate'er happened t'her took her magic I think."
Jul 8, 2015 5:05 pm
"Thank you, Sarah. Take care of her. And yourself!" Diginus waves to the two women before following Fenwick out the door.

:::So I think that's a good place to call this scene. I'm not going to close or lock this scene right now in case we think of something. But I will as we move into the next one. Retcons are an option if needed until this thread gets locked:::

OOC: I want to to say we took Marta's book with us, but I wonder how big it is. Would these little critters be able to manage it? And how important is it? Maybe we've already learned all there is to learn fron it.

Good point. It is rather large in comparison to the PCs. If they stood next to it standing up, it would probably be mid-chest to shoulder height. You can take it with you, but it will be cumbersome to carry. Fenwick could levitate it and it would not slow you down, but he would have to put it down if a fight broke out, or he wanted to use his magic in some other way. So it would be a risk of damaging or losing it. You do still have information to learn from the book, so you aren't done with it. Another option is to ask Sarah to try and figure out what you need to know and leave the book with her. It means you would have to come back to learn what she figures out, but Diginus can teleport.

So as I see it you have two options, take it with you and be burdened by it and risk damaging/losing it and not learning what you need to know, or leave it and you have to come back to Sarah and hope she learns what you need to know.

I guess we leave it with Sarah. What do you think, Qralloq?
