Episode 2: Local Heroes

May 17, 2017 4:37 pm
Alaric:

Alaric, following the the goblins’ tracks proves to be slow and tedious and it takes you into the early morning to follow them back out of the Tickwood and northeast towards the Lost Coast Road, here they would easily be lost among the rest of the traffic, but you reason that they probably wouldn’t have followed the main road for any length of time. And not much further ahead you can see that they have merely crossed the road and headed towards another forest, named Nettlewood.

The trees are shorter, and share their forest floor with snarls of nettles and thorny underbrush. This is making it difficult to make your way further in.
OOC:
You have started to narrow down where they are, and I need another 3 x Purple Survival check. You are no longer hampered by the dark, but I will use 2 of the threat from your first roll so that you suffer 2 strain and 1 threat to give you one setback.
Darakar & Butler:

The two of you are at the inn eating a healthy breakfast. Men your size can eat a lot and already Amiko is starting to regret giving you free room and board. You have already been approached by several locals, offering their thanks for your heroic actions the previous day.

Darakar, as a half-orc, you do not always get respect in the towns you visit, but Sandpoint don’t seem to have any problem with your presence.

You’re about to finish your breakfast, when you see the nobleman you saved yesterday enter. He scans the room until he sees you and purposefully walks up to you.

"I want to thank you again for saving my life," he says and bows his head in respect at you. "Without you and your companion, I would have been dead now. Take this as a token of my thanks."

He takes a pouch and slides it over the table towards the two of you. You can hear it jingle with the sounds of coins.

Aery:

You are out surveying the possibilities of some defenses should the goblins try to attack again, when you are approached by a young woman in her 20s.

She introduces herself as Shayliss Vinder. "Sorry to intrude on you sir," she says, her eyes averting to the ground. "But when I heard we had the great Aery visiting our lowly town, I couldn’t help but come over."

Still too shy to make eye contact, she continues: "I know you are busy and have more important things to do, but I was wondering if I could trouble you with a little something."

Jimmy:

As you check the bomb last night, you find some etchings on the inside as well as a couple of small glass tubes with alchemical liquids. It is similar to alchemist fire. You cannot recognize the symbol which looks to be a jackal head with three eyes.

When you arrive at the sheriff with Jenny you realize he already has a visitor, father Zanthus. He nods at the both of you.

"I agree we are ill prepared for another attack, and I may have a solutions," Sheriff Hemlock says. "I am taking a few guards south to Magnimar to see if we can secure additional soldiers to station here for a few weeks. At least until the extent of the goblin threat can be determined."

"I am loathe to leave so soon after an event. But I was hoping to secure a meeting with all of you ‘heroes of Sandpoint’. I am hoping you will be able to keep the peace until I return. The locals seems to have taken to you."
OOC:
The two threats represent not knowing the symbol. To do so, you need to make an Average Lore check (2 x Purple) with 2 Setbacks from your two threats.

Aery mutters to himself about why he gets stuck doing such menial tasks as he surveys the area and scribbles down measurements and angles occasionally shaking his head. A young lady comes up and introduces herself and seems to want to start a dialogue.

Aery looks from his work to the lady back and forth a few times before he stashes his papers and quill.

Well I'd definitely rather be talking with her... he thinks to himself.

Aery looks to the skies sideways for a second facing the lady fully before snapping his fingers and a lute falls from out of nowhere before he breaks into song.
OOC:
Using Soothing Song to help her relax open up versus the mechanical benefit. Summon Instrument for wonky effect.
[ +- ] Hey There Shayliss
Take the ladies hand as the lute vanishes he looks at her seriously, "I think you meant lovely not lowly." he corrects her with a wink.

Butler waves his hand as the noble puts the pouch down "Well I do not speak for the others but as for myself I did not aid you or the town for any recompense. The room and board the good inn keeper has offered will suffice for myself." he glances at Darakar "If you want to keep hold of it for now lad and split it with the others when they resurface I'm sure they'd be grateful"
May 17, 2017 8:15 pm
Holding up a finger as he quaffed down his mug of ale, Darakar took a moment to consider the offer. Setting down the mug, he made sure to swallow prior to lowering his head (else the ale would spill out due to lack of lower lip) before answering.

"I have no objections, though I'm thinking we should probably not hold the demask to the free food and drink after this morning," Darakar answered as he picked up the pouch to feel the weight.

Well, at least we have a starting point. Nettlewood.

Aery:

Shayliss makes a shy laugh at you. "Thank you sir," she says. "It just so happens that I am in need of a mighty hero like yourself. My father runs the general store, but he’s so busy with my sister’s love life he’s neglected the business. We’ve got rats. Why just yesterday, I saw one the size of a goblin hiding behind a barrel in the basement. And well, since we have this handy new hero in town, well maybe he’d be inclined to go back with me and kill a few rats." She looks up at you expectantly.

Butler & Darakar:

The pouch seems hefty, a good handful of coins.

Aldern Foxglove looks happy that one of you took the pouch. "Well, I have to do something to pay you back for my life. I also would like the honor of you accompany me for a fox hunt tomorrow. Bring along your companions from yesterday."

"If we have the luck of the hunt, we’ll feast well. And you can all tell me of your daring adventures. I’m sure you must have seen some amazing places on your travels to Sandpoint."

Alaric:

You find the nettles a hassle to move through and soon lose the tracks.
OOC:
I will use both threat to represent getting stung on the nettles, suffer 2 strain.
Jimmy Lee:

You can kind of recall it being a religious icon of some sort. One of the dark gods, though you cannot for the life of you remember which one.
OOC:
With your advantage you are able to figure out which direction to focus your research, but without outside help or some kind of library you won’t get any further.
May 18, 2017 5:43 pm
"Sure I don't mind... curious why they're getting that big... might pop around to grab some mates though. You got any books in this General Store or a map of the area towards Junk Beach?" Aery inquires.

Aery will pop around to the tavern to see who's free to bust some heads of rats or quite possibly 'actual naked badgers' in nude mode.
OOC:
Offering up a go around to the General Store if anyone in the group is at the tavern.
May 19, 2017 3:11 am
Hmmm... I'll head back to town and let the group know what is going on.
May 19, 2017 3:48 am
"Sounds good, just let me know when and where. But first there's one thing.

"I'm still in the process of learning the local language, and don't recognize the word 'fox', what is it?"

Some of Darakar's clansmen would be embarrassed to admit anything like that, and when he first arrived in the area he was much the same. The last few years had remedied him of refusing to ask for clarification on words he didn't recognize. Besides, Wolyn himself didn't gain Mermyr Ukhaki without listening to Raskrin's advice.
May 19, 2017 9:50 am
Ok. Is there a place in town where I can find a book concerning Dark Gods? If not, is there a local wise man or woman that I can ask about the symbol?
May 19, 2017 11:37 am
"A Fox? Small four legged creature, orange and white, black feet. Like a wolf but more clever than face bitey."
OOC:
Meta Comment @ Starkiller: There's the priest at the church you can clergy fist bump and hash it out for assitance... I think the wise ones in town are you and me technically. I'm pretty sure most towns would burn books on dark gods and if not they're probably cultists looking on craiglist for sacrifices.
May 19, 2017 11:47 am
OOC:
Aery. Thank you. I'll check with the priest first, I saw you have something going on with the large rats. If you are willing, I would prefer that we go to the priest together. I'm sure you are better suited for this kind of thing than I am. I am more than happy to collaborate with you and if you are ok with it, I'd love to accompany you with taking on the rats. BTW, this rat quest sounds similar to A Bard's Tale where you have to fight a giant fire breathing rat in the basement of a tavern.
May 19, 2017 12:28 pm
OOC:
Yeah no worries, Jimmy could go back to the tavern for a drink and to let everyone know 'we're it' for a bit in town when it comes to the crisis center while he tries to figure things out. Rats story might make a good song... this also gives Alaric time to get back as well.
May 19, 2017 6:01 pm
"Except for the color it sounds like a fengr, a small white furred wild dog that hunts rabbits and other similarly sized animals. A few clans breed them.

"If I remember correctly one of the deities worshiped by the northern humans has it as a totem animal."
OOC:
Darakar's referring to an arctic fox.
May 19, 2017 6:31 pm
I'm heading back to the tavern to consult with Aery, tell Butler that he's the man, and roll my eyes at Darakar. Aery, I took this bomb apart and didn't blow myself or anyone else up. Please take a look at it and let me know if you recognize any of the markings inside it. Jimmy points out the symbol which looks to be a jackal head with three eyes.
OOC:
[GM Question] I did get 2 Advantages on my lore roll, can Aery use those as boosts to his lore roll?
OOC:
To Darakar, quoting Chris Tucker "Don't nobody understand the words that are coming out of your mouth man" Also to Darakar, you should make a different character and name him Billy Lee. 1: You'll understand what people are saying. 2: You'll have an awesome brother who you can trust completely.
[ +- ] Double Dragon
May 21, 2017 10:34 pm
Aery blinks as Jimmy opts to let him in on some new information, "Uh thank you for that..." he begins not sure how to respond to the bomb comment besides that. "Oh this is Miss Vinder gentlemen... This marking... Hmm actually lets get walking if we're doing stuff about town... anyone else got request coming in for offers and requests? Do we need to leave word with the barkeep for people to make appointments or messages for us when we get back... And where's the little one's keeper?" he states moving from letting everyone know his lady friend to motioning a few fingers short of his own height before getting on his tip toes to imply Alaric.
May 22, 2017 7:03 pm
"Junk beach is just to the north, can't miss it. And don't need any map," she tells you. "I'd love to take you to a beach, but there are better beaches to visit."

As you start to gather other heroes you can notice Shayliss becoming irritated. "I am sure one hero would suffice for a few rats," she says, annoyance clear in her mind.
OOC:
Anyone watching the scene could roll a Discipline at this time with a difficulty of 2 x Red + 1 x Purple. Only first one to roll counts.

Yes, anyone using your guidance about the dark gods can benefit from what you've already learned.
At this moment a dirty and tired Alaric returns to town, entering the inn.
OOC:
Not fun to sit by a lot of posts, so you have timed your return pretty good.
May 22, 2017 7:24 pm
Aery nods with the realization of the location and steps back and adjusts himself navigationally so he knows where that actual is in reference to the town.

"Riiiiight well since you mentioned some are as big as a goblins... I really don't want to be mounted by a rat for any reason really... I mean it's a bad way to go... How'd he die? Well there was a Halfling sized rat on top of him and it was... yeah that's just wrong love I can't have that being uttered ever regardless of what happens afterwards he's having his way with me. Darakar over there he has a penchant for doing away with 'nude badgers' as they call them around his parts and rat about that size probably fair less in combat. While him and the boys dispatch the rats maybe I myself can look at the books for the business... I mean if it's in a rough way there's inventory to be sold and what not. I-" Aery rambles on before stopping as Alaric is in the inn and how he looks he blinks.

"Well you look like shite. Want to kill some rats? Maybe buy some soap... lufia... yes no? Please say yes." he shifts his conversation to Alaric before looking at the rest and hops off to deal with business type things.

Aery the Merchant... Aery the Minstrel Merchant... yes.... that does sound nice. Aery thinks to himself.
OOC:
Discipline is a goose I think since the Despair wipes everything to 0 Despair = 1 Success + 1 advantage right? The really bad thing still happens though right? *Grinch Smile* =}

Alaric looks around at his fellow party member. Before I do anything, let's talk in private briefly. I want to fill you in on what I found out. Upstairs in one of your rooms.

Alaric tells the party where he was able to trail to goblins to before losing their trail and deciding to return to town.

I need a little while to rest and then I'm ready to roll, if it can't wait though, I'll go now. After all, I can't get much dirtier.
OOC:
I'm down 7 Strain right now, which is why I'd like to rest to recover it. If we can't wait though, I'll go as is.
