Chapter 1: Nightstone
Be sure to read and follow the guidelines for our forums.
This night, that peace is about to be shattered.
You are just sitting down to enjoy a meal and a drink when rough words disrupt your repast.
As the bard tries to play on and ignore the drunken criticism the man continues, "My friend don't like your music neither."
He squints his eyes in frustration at the lack of reaction and then pours his drink over the bard's head while his friend laughs raucously beside him.
Carrik has a very don't worry about it face on as he watches.
"Hey well, everyone else seems to enjoy it. So why don't you take your ugly mug back to your seat."
The words roll off Chanler's tongue as he gives his lute a light strum to accentuate them.

The captain turns back to Carrik and Kal'lista, "It appears we have some open seats at our table, and the bard is feeling generous with his money. Join us?"
"If yer buying, yer drinking with us, too," says the man who started the fight, "No more of that 'orrible music. Was near putting me to sleep."
They have taken only a few steps when the crowd parts and a very angry dwarf bursts forth. He plants himself in their path and looks directly at Chanler, "Are you alright, lad? I heard a fracus." At this he glares angrily at the two men on either side of the bard.
Chanler walks -clothes still soggy with ale- over to the table and carefully takes a seat.

When the noise dies down, the captain smiles and introduces himself and his men, pointing at each in turn, "Yingix. That's Mornam. Mica and Dom you've met. Cen and Dunno are sleeping outside."
Morak is busy bringing some ale to another table, but sees Chanler trying to catch his eye and soon walks over. "Help you, lad?" he asks the bard.
Mica cheers, "Yes!" but the captain interjects, "No, I think not. We head out early for the road. Time to head back to camp." The men grumble good-naturedly as they quaff their last swigs of ale and begin filing out of the inn. Yingix turns back to the three of you and offers, "You're welcome to come along, if you're headed that way. The roads are not as safe as they used to be."
The words tumble from her in a rush, "It's the children, they never came home...they went mushroom-picking with Nestor."
A human couple at a nearby table leaps up, "Jehanna? The twins?"
The woman wrings her hands, "None of them came home. Larlow and Broland went looking for them, but Morak, you know they can't see a thing in the dark. Please, please, can you come help us look?"
Morak's face progressively darkens as the details unfold and he nods seriously at her question, "Yes, of course." He runs back behind the bar to grab his cloak.

The three of you follow the trail of small footprints deeper into the woods. The trees seem to close in on you, their branches ominous and dark in the night. After a short while, you begin to hear a feeble voice calling from up ahead, "Help...someone...help!"
"Thank the gods," he wheezes, "Don't stop for me...the children...they got the children!" He points southeast along what you can now see is a footpath leading through the woods.
Carrik crouches down checking over the old man making sure his wounds aren't mortal. If they are Carrik would attempt to patch him up. Tearing his cloak and tying it to him so its putting pressure on the wound. As he's doing this Carrik is talking to the old man both trying to keep him calm and get some information out of him.
"Nasty bit of work there but you'll be alright. Kids will be too. I promise you that. What managed to get you like this anyway?"

Morak nods to you, "Well done, lad. Don't know how you did it, but well done." He peer around into the inky forest, "But we're not out of the woods yet."
His grin fades as he sees Chanler's sober expression. "We'll find him, lad. But we all need rest. Stumbling around in the dark, with those creatures out there, that's plain stupid. We'll go back in the morning, with those that'll come and can fight."
As he gets his order, he sits at the bar, slowly drinking his ale, its color matching the color of dwarf's eyes. He observes the commotion in the inn with a frown, and asks the innkeeper in a deep clear voice:
"Aye, this town looks more nervous than a girl at her first dance! What's brewing?"
"Ain’t much for dancin’, myself," he says, raising his hand for another round, "but maybe it’s just ‘cause the music ain’t right.
His mind wandered as he went about rubbing an oil cloth over his bucket helm to try and stay ahead of the present moisture. It wasn't often he let his chestnut hair display for others. Too much of a soldier left in him to not go without protection like as not. With a distant look of those bright eyes you might mistake him for a man of romance and he would probably chuckle. It wasn't love but loyalty that keeps him on his path. The same one that keeps him wearing that old mailed hauberk in clan blue. The very same he had left his home in so long ago. Beneath it hung his earthy linen shirt and brown woven trousers. Neither could hardly be seen for his armor. He still wore his heavy, leather wrapped boots and his worn, hard leather gauntlets. Both as brown as the dirt they have helped him stay above for so long.
The longsword at his side hung over the edge of the chair. It rarely came off of his side even as he slept. He needed to invest in a dagger, but the thought was always averting him during visits to town commons. Saega did fine work for protection by herself so he wasn't one to complain unless her blessing left his hand. He couldn't think of a replacement when she'd seen him through so much. He did have his heater set against the leg of the table along with his small pack of provisions. It had a few holes, but wasn't worth turning into a sling just yet. Aestan was a touch too sentimental for that.
He couldn't help but think where he may wind up next. He'd need coin for food again soon.

"No, but I might see about your stable. Fortune has not favored my pouch" -jingling about a solemn coin purse- "would a few coppers earn me a place outside with the horses? I dread returning to roadside for another night, the dew settles heavily as of late and is hell on old steel."
He raises the oil cloth and helmet in hand in indication of his plight and offers a sincere look as his eyes crinkle at the edges. It was harder to smile than it used to be, but he wasn't without a simple joy of a dry place to sleep and the mercy of a fellow traveler.
"You have my thanks." he says as he begins to turn towards the door, footsteps heavy on the wooden floor.
"And you'll not worry about the beasts, I have seen what they can do to a man and I haven't the desire to become such as that." With that he stepped out into the night without so much as a hesitation to darkness's embrace.
The name's Qavez. I'm passing through town looking for adventure. You look like you've seen your fair share, though I reckon by the looks of short-stack over there at the bar, something happened recently that I missed."
"I hope you didn't just call me a short-stack. Or is this your way of looking for adventure?"
"Greenskins, you say? Huh. Thought I smelled something foul on the road. Do you plan to search for them? If so, you can count on my sword."
"Good, good. Looks like those greenskins are in for a thrashing.
No need to discuss payment yet, we shall see what we can do tomorrow. Right now I want a room for the night. It's two gold, right?"
He looks around the room, empty now save for the visiting adventurers, "Best now you get some rest, though. The morning is soon enough."
"Didn't introduce myself, did I? Name's Iolgur. I am a tracker and a thief-taker. My skills might come in handy tomorrow."
Then, after some pause, he adds:
"Well, 'till morning."
His morning routine done, Iolgur walks inside the inn and sits at the nearest table. He shouts in the general direction if the kitchen:
"I'll have eggs, bacon... and something to wash it all down, please!"
As he floats he becomes aware of a presence that is seeking him, hunting for him. He twists and turns trying to keep himself away from this presence but his efforts are in vain as he feels it reaching out tendrils of nothingness towards him, one lightly brushing against his back....
***
Letting the axe lean against the stump and a full stack of fresh kindling, the lone man wiped a broad forearm over his damp brow. He was down to his linen shirt, his armor shed to the side with his other equipment. His sleeves were rolled up to just above his elbows and collar unlaced lazily to allow the cool air to keep him refreshed. Dark hair shown under the laces of his shirt and could be seen running down the length of his arms. White scars ran down those same strong arms. Each a mark of sacrifice. A sacrifice he was proud to make each time he was made to do so.
Wiping his callused hands on his trousers he went to sit next to the horse stable and let his head fall back against the rough hewn planks. Closing his eyes for a while, he heard someone walk out and begin working in one of the rain barrels by the corner of the inn. Opening one of his eyes to peek against the early sunlight he saw it was one of the patrons of the previous evening. A stout dwarf who carried an air of authority and an easy stance of martial skill. Aestan closed his eye again while the fellow groomed himself and afterwards made his way back into the place where the smell of food had begun to waft. Feeling rested, the soldier gathered his gear and, after donning it, made his way into the establishment. Seeing several patrons already gathered at the bar getting orders put in, he made his way to the table from last night and seated himself to wait patiently for the keeps' attention.
"Aye, that'd be me. Qavez, right?"
His voice is still hoarse from sleep, and he clears his throat. He then turns to Chanler and says:
"Hey, no need to go fighting on an empty stomach. Eat something. Those goblins had a whole night for themselves, another half an hour won't matter much."
"Excuse me," he said, standing as he did. "But what kind of problems are you having around here?"
"It's a shame I turned in so early..." Slowly shifting his weight to one leg he flexed his jaw in obvious distaste, eyes searching the floor as if sorting out his thoughts.
"If the keep could spare a horn of water and perhaps some cured meats I would extend my services to your village," his eyes returning level with Chanler's, "I can't let such evil go without action."
He gestures to Chanler, "Come upstairs a minute with me, lad, if you're done you're breakfast."
"Please, lets be quick - had I known, I would've attempted to track this force down myself."
His eyes grow soft as he continues, "Nilomli always did give me a hard time for keeping this, but I knew it would be needed again someday." He flexes hands grown gnarled with arthritis, "Only I can't use it anymore, so you'll have to carry it for me."
He turns and brings out a well-oiled box, several feet long, from under a dusty cloth. Opening it, Chanler finds a simple longsword, with a worn leather hilt. Lifting it up, he can see that its keen edge reflects no light - a sign that it is very sharp indeed. Morak smiles again, with more ferocity, "I sharpened it last night after we came back. Take it now, and make those little albrachtos pay for stealing our children. And for Nestor."
"I don't think we've been properly introduced," he straightened up abruptly, "my name is Aestan, Aestan Aldrer. A former sword of a court kept far away. I hope we can work together to help these troubled peoples."
He tips his hat towards Aestan. "Also, don't know if you've noticed, but we've got another looking to assist with your goblins. Soon as he's done with his breakfast, that is."
"Ready as I'll ever be," says Iolgur as he tightens the fastenings of his armor.

"I'll say it again, you done good. Don't let the doubts of what might have been shadow over the value of what was. And you saved those kids."
I'll write up the approach to the town tonight; if there is anything your characters do before leaving the forest, go ahead and post it before then.
"What are you all planning on doing after this?" he asks at length.
Morak comes over to the table and suggests, "You've done a lot today already, wee lass. P'raps all of you would do well to have a rest, and seek somewhat to do in the mornin'? I'm sure them up at the keep would have tasks and missions and whatnot."
He turns to Chanler. "What do you say, kid? Might find more to do out there in the world, maybe do some good where it ain't."
Maru finishes one more ale tankard and then heads up stairs.
Xalvador looks out the window and sees three people pushing at a small stone obelisk in the middle of the town, while tiny figures run around in terror. He blinks and rubs the sleep from his eyes and his perspective returns...those three are not townsfolk, but giants! The tiny figures are the humans, halflings, and dwarves that inhabit the town, made small only in comparison.
In front of him, chaos rules the night. People are shouting and running around, fires have started in some houses, and dogs are barking furiously. Three giant beings surround the obelisk at the center of town, working to free it from the ground. As he watches, they lift it and begin marching toward a misty stairway that leads up into the clouds.
