I - de Souza's Ashes

Dec 12, 2017 9:14 pm
It's been a while since one of the Vampires died. They have a nasty habit of staying around for a while, even without blood on a daily basis. But Antonio de Sousa's nights of cheating the grave have come to an end; by all accounts of people close to him, his partionally carbonised corpse was found sitting in his extensive, secluded garden, apparently just waiting for the dawn to take him. A note was found, forensics and psychometry were performed, and all signs have indeed pointed to nothing aside from an old man who wanted to end it on his own terms.

And de Sousa was old. He was old when he emigrated from Lisbon back when Portugal had it's own empire, finding his way north to the newly formed United States after Brazil gained independence. A truly ancient member of his kind, he was deeply connected to all of San Francisco's elite movers and shakers in some fashion. Even though he stayed out of most city matters since the end of the Cold War, his opinion was respected, his council welcome, and apparently had no real enemies.

With no body to bury and the last thirty years of his life a quiet affair, his memorial service was a quiet affair; his three brides, the Coalition members, some close friends, and one or two of the more respectable vampires, held at midnight on a cloudy December at his mansion in Forest Hill. It appears there are details of his will to be disclosed.

The core four of the Coalition are currently having a heated discussion with Thomas Cedar, de Souza's lawyer and now the executor of his estate inside the conservatory on the matter. Before he was dragged into the shouting match, Cedar made it clear that he wishes to talk to the five of you together at some point, to go over some important matters with you, but obviously he's busy for now. And so you and the other guests, mourners and hangers on find yourselves making small talk in the garden of the late de Souza's estate; around the same swimming pool his ashes were found. The canapes are delicious and the wine is actually wine despite the stereotypes.
OOC:
As a member of the Coalition who sealed Balberith away, Frank was definitely extended an invitation. de Souza wanted all of you here for some reason, so has either directly invited you or someone he knew you would be likely to chaperone to the service (an NPC of your choice). If you want to have a reason for knowing de Souza, feel free to describe it. Otherwise, time for some schmoozing, talking and trying to find out just what's been going on.

Thanks to Kalajel for reminding me... Session intro moves while we're in this scene

Session Intro:
At the beginning of every session, announce which character your character trusts the least; their player will spotlight a Faction for your character (that isn’t already marked). Mark that Faction. Tell the MC about a rumor or conflict that you’ve heard about that Faction, building on previous established information if you’d like, and roll with the Faction.
On a 10+, you’re prepared for the conflict you laid out: you’ve got a Debt on someone in that Faction or a useful piece of information or equipment, your choice. On a 7-9, you’re neck deep in it: you owe someone in that Faction a Debt, and someone in that Faction owes a Debt to you. On a miss, you’re caught flat-footed, unprepared, or unaware: the MC will tell you who is coming at you.

Georg stood in a group and looked between the people currently debating on where the wine was from. He sighed not really use to social events like this anymore or the small talk, pulling on his shirt collar and adjusting his tie he looked around. He smoothed his jacket and tried to recall when was the last time he was in dress clothes, or even in a tie.

He didn't know much of Mr. Sousa in his undeath but he remembered hearing his boss talk about a benefactor that helped out the business when they were a little short on money and almost closed down. He had come in a few times and he seemed like a nice man. Granted the fact Georg had to keep the shop open until after dark and the owner and Mr. Sousa talking in the back for a bit while Georg placed the order took him a while to put together. He didn't seem like a vampire to Georg, more like a grandpa with his quiet smile and knowing eyes.

He was mostly curious of why he was here, there was a man that wanted to talk to him and a few others. He knew most of them except the Fey mentioned. He didn't know the person and didn't really trust them. Georg finds himself looking back at those talking and nodding occasionally while lost in thought.

@ Remnant: Nope. The player whom you trust the least is the one who highlights a faction for you to roll under.
Shaow is there, standing silently in a corner and not mingling much, but rather observing mortals... or what used to be mortals mingling together. He understands that the death of someone is usually seen as a tragic event, and expected the few grieving guests even if he's not entirely sure of the purpose of grieving, but he is surprised at seeing some guests who seems to be rather jovial, this perplexes him greatly. Could they be glad Mr. de Souza is dead? Scanning the room, he notices a few familiar faces, not entirely sure how to approach them, he decided to just stand there and wait for them to make the first move.

Show had a strictly professional relationship with Mr. de Souza. He had bought a few of his pieces in the past, and in fact from where he is currently standing, Shaow can spot one of the potteries he made for Mr. de Souza along with some other pieces which are not from him, but some of them looking rather ancient. Surely one as long-lived as Mr. de Souza had plenty of time to gather pieces of art form different time periods and places from around the world.

Not needing to eat or drink, Shaow politely refuses any drinks or hors-d'oeuvres offered to him...

I'll selection The Thing that Partitions the Void as the character I trust the least. In my long existence, I've dealt with all manner of supernatural creatures and have learnt how to handle them. But Partition, I'm still not quite sure what it is yet, and even though we do share a special bond through our inhumanity, I am still not entirely sure how to handle it...

The Thing that Partitions the Void is confused by this whole event, de Souza is a charming fellow, with whom Partion has shared some great experiences with, yet about it are several respectable creatures morning him as if he is gone. Surely the fellow is still with as we can all yet remember him. Partition is doing what it does whenever it gets confounded by this world, standing in a corner and taking in as much information as possible. He observes they Fae most closely, that person continues to be something of an enigma to him, their rules somewhat still unclear.

OOC:
De Souza is not the only supernatural to have turned up dead lately. Although his death seemed natural, for other supernaturals, they were quite clearly killed. The uninformed think this might be a new band of hunters cleaning up the city, but for those who know what signs to look for, it is obvious a revenant is clearly giving some long due well-deserved payback...

With an 8 I'm in it deep, I'll owe a spectre named Cortez a debt as he helped me out with the whole haunted exhibit thing at the Asian Art Museum, and a vamp named Jackie will owe me one as I once saved her ass from a wolf pack (it wasn't really something I meant or planned to do, it sort of was happenstance; I was at the wrong place at the right time type deal, but hey, a debt's a debt...).

Frank chats happily to some guests, telling loud jokes, most of which are completely inappropriate for the occasion. But Frank presses on trusting the guests to filter themselves, the ones easily offended moving away and those more inclined to fun gathering round. As he talks, eye teeth glinting in the candlelight, he watches his friends all move away together into the conservatory. Frank grins again and sips the last of his wine.

They’re really pissed about something, he thinks with malicious glee.

Looking around the gathered guests, Frank wonders what exactly the old bloodsucker had wanted with such an odd group. A florist, a demon’s lapdog, a pewter figurine and… and Frank isn’t sure exactly what the last one is. And then Frank himself. Antonio had been a friend, or, at least as close to a friend as Frank had around here. They had both lingered in the city for a long time and, he supposes, extended proximity breeds some kind of fondness. The old fool had prompted Santiago at Hecklers to give Frank his first break as a comic, and Frank was pretty sure there hadn’t been a night going by since that both of those bloodsuckers hadn’t regretted it.

He regards the group gathered around him who seem to be waiting for him to say something else… wait, did I just stop in the middle of a sentence? What was I saying? He mentally shrugs and decides now is as good a time as any to take a tangent.

You know what I think? I think he faked his death. He’s done it before you know. Hid out for twelve years! Twelve years. Yup, Santiago knew how to do practical jokes. I bet he’s watching’ us right now, and laughin’ his creepy ol’ head off.

Of course none of this is true but Frank likes the idea of starting the rumour, having everyone watching the shadows for the next few years. He excuses himself from the group with a mysterious nod and goes off looking for a refill.
OOC:
Frank trusts Georg least, which is why he is the only one he doesn't have some kind of deal with already.

Georg wasn't much for politics and his episode at work that quickly got him fired had people in the morality faction concerned, Georg really couldn't answer if he had a vision about one of the major political figures from the faction of Morality since he really didn't understand it. They're unsure if it's due to him being just that green or just trying to be deceptive about the information. Georg is concern just how far they're willing to go to find out about the vision and if he was lying or not. Considering his background he's worried the truth isn't going to enough.

Georg flicks his head slightly and blinks very slowly leaving his eyes closed. He tries to focus his breathing and remain calm. One thing he's found is no one likes it when an Oracle possibly just had a vision and you don't know what they saw. Pulling a handkerchief out and clearing his throat into it glancing at it for blood before putting it away and Georg fishes out his phone. He excuses himself apologetically from the group and walks away calling the owner of the flower shop.

He listens and pulls the phone away to look at it and listens as he moves away from the people at the party. He pausing while listening realizing he's unconsciously moved closer to the flowers. While he waits he looks for anything that catches his eye and connects before looking around to see who's watching him. If it's taking too long for someone to pick up he'll try and control his breathing and caress a flower that he thinks might tell him more. He'll switch over and text Partition, Persephone, and Mr. Ren while he waits. The group text is simple.

We need to talk now. GG

Persephone arrives at the affair, having bee invited by name. But then again, when it comes to her patron's business dealings, she never does; she is only given what info she needs in order to complete the task.

So she arrives, dressed in a black, gauzy top and straight black slacks and boots, formal but stylish. She takes a drink from the small bar available and mingles with the other guests.

Tryin’ ta cut me out of the inheritance, are ya? he thinks, mostly kidding.

"Hey, look, I'm really sorry for your loss," he says to the grieving, but still very hot, lady, "call me?"

And he hands her a card and wanders off, looking around for the prophet.

As Persephone sips some wine (red, natch) and chats with the deceased's lawyer's accountant's husband, her phone buzzes. She excuses herself and steps away, looking through her messages. Delete... delete... later.. no way.. fuck off.. delete... oh interesting.. delete.. Huh, what's this? she says to herself, as she comes across Georg's text.

She shrugs, raises her eyes, and scans the area for GG. Once she finds him, she'll stroll over casually, mingling and chatting a bit as she does.

Shaow stands, always observing. This intermingling of different mortals and supernaturals is fascinating... He then notices a movement within the crowd of mourners, hanger-ons, and well-wishers; the familiar faces are on the move. Hmm, should he follow them? They haven't asked him to follow them, but nor have they asked Partition and it is still going along. Was it some form of non-verbal communication he missed? Shaow always had difficulty with non-verbal communication... Maybe they did signal him to follow them without alerting everyone else but he missed it, being so focused on the rest of the guests...

Oh no, what to do... Shaow suddenly devises a plan; he'll stay put but keep a close eye on the group. Surely if they want him to follow them they'll signal him again once they noticed he missed the first signal... Yes, this is perfect.

As Persephone strolls over toward GG, she looks through her phone notifications. Oh yes, I had almost forgotten about that... she mumbles to herself. She saw a text from her friend Callie who works at her coffee shop, gossiping about the latest news: apparently the mayor is getting indicted for some kind of corruption. Callie cares about this because the Mayor buys his coffee from her.

Persephone has been keeping track of this because she has had some dealings with the Mayor's office, in part on behalf of her patron. The assistant DA, Carson Lamprey, owes her a Debt, because he had some dealings with her patron and Persephone gave the ADA a few tips beforehand, tips that may have saved his life.

She owes Callie a Debt, actually, because Callie allowed her to crash with her for a few weeks, back when she needed to lay low when one of her patron's enemies was in town looking for her.

After a few moments, she meets up with the others.

Dec 20, 2017 10:10 pm

She gets a confused look on her face and whispers to the group, saying, "Uhm, I just caught the end of that, GG. Your boss is responsible for the bloodsucker's -- ahem, for de Souza's death somehow? And what is this about the Archbishop sticking his nose into Coalition business?"

Just the stuff in the information thread. Since The Coalition changed the entire power structure of supernatural San Francisco,
it's definitely something everyone can know rumours about. Persephone can definitely know about it; The Defiler will at the very least have filled her in about it's sibling being sealed in the Labyrinth, and currently seems content with them being there.
Dec 21, 2017 3:21 am
"So where do we begin? It seems we have several possible leads. Even if we stay here, I've noticed not all guests seem distraught over de Souza's death... Then there is Georg's employer who might be in need of help if it is not too late already, and finally, we can see about the Archbishop Kyrell. All seem like possible leads to follow."

Shaow looks around to see if any of those jovial guests he mentioned are not snooping on what the small group is doing...
Dec 21, 2017 1:55 pm
"It's a condition..." Georg hastily explains trying to blink his eyes back to normal while pressing the pads of one hand against his temple and closes his eyes. He didn't want the city hall thing to happen again. "Frank is connected and may know something but he might be dead... de Souza would have known about Kyrell. I wonder if his warning on deaf ears from the Coalition was quieted by his death before his took more drastic measures to open their eyes." he offers up before cocking his head to look at Persephone about the flower comment, "All things have a story, finding out what it is becomes the difficult part..." he explains not making eye contact with her after mentioning it and where his mind wanders.

"Mr. Ren is right. With Thomas Cedar being pulled 4 ways by the coalition and us being called here for a reason maybe we should rescue him first... and find what has befallen Frank."
Dec 22, 2017 6:00 am
Frank shuffles nervously,

"Nuthin’. Nuthin’ has befallen me, I’m just doin’ what I do."

But the prophet’s words have got to him and he glances around the room furtively, looking for danger in every corner.

"I have been watching Kyrell, just like he’s been watching me. Creepy guy. Uh, no offence guys. Got nuthin’ against creeps. Some of my best friends..." then he just smiles thinking of the rest of the Coalition, creeps one and all.

Jan 5, 2018 2:53 pm
Frank heartily slaps Georg on the back,

"See? Who says funerals can’t be fun?! Let’s go spring a lawyer!"
Jan 5, 2018 3:51 pm
Georg stumbles forward a little "Usually the ones who see dark foreboding, pain, suffering, and death."
Jan 5, 2018 5:03 pm
Frank rolls his eyes at the others whilst pointing at Georg with his thumb,

"This guy is definitely a glass-half-empty kinda guy. Even when it’s full, he’s lookin’ ahead to it bein’ half empty."

He looks Georg in the eye with a cocky grin plastered across his face,

"Live for the moment, dude."

Without waiting for a reply he swivels on his left heel and starts walking towards the conservatory, taking a very quick detour on the way to grab a fresh glass of wine from a waitress.
Jan 5, 2018 9:57 pm
Shaow makes his way towards Thomas Cedar, not entirely sure how he'll manage to pull him away from his obligations right now since diplomacy is not his strongest suit. Hopefully, one of his companion will be able to get the lawyer alone in the hopes of getting some information...
Jan 8, 2018 8:56 pm
OOC:
Back from winter break. Let's resume!
The conservatory's got a decent view of the garden you're currently in, and the discussion between the coalition is getting quite intense. Cedar by idle chance looks up and sees you're walking towards the entrance to the house. His expression is one that screams "I don't want to be here"

Two or three tough bodyguards are standing guard outside the doors to the conservatory, dressed in formal wear and earpieces to fit in, but obviously not the types to fit naturally within. One is scratching the back of her neck and seems more at ease in the surroundings. African American, dreadlocked, no nonsense sort. There's a StandFast Private Security Company logo pinned to her lapel, and so must be one of Alonso's team of private contractors. She's barking something into her microphone and she's got quite dangerous looking teeth. None of the bodyguards have made a move yet, but are likely to if you wander too close to the doors they're meant to be guarding.

What's the plan?
Jan 9, 2018 6:16 pm
Georg walks towards the heated discussion, if stopped he'll just stop and state is from where he's stopped "Mista Cedar you had something to talk to us about for Mista de Souza I beleive. There is something possibly related to his departure we need to attended involving someone's death that has or is going to happen. We need to talk now, Please!"
Jan 9, 2018 9:13 pm
Shaow looks at Frank, then whispers to the fey.

"I do believe this is the sort of situation where you shine... unless you'd prefer I force my way in. I doubt they'd be able to stop me..."

Having been an unstoppable force of justice and vengeance for over 2000 years, Shaow is quite confident in his claim: very few in the past have been able to stop the terracotta warrior, at least, not for any significant amount of time...
Jan 10, 2018 2:44 pm
Frank grins at Shaow,

"Hey, I always shine! he says, then he saunters up behind Georg and eyes the guards over his shoulder for a moment, trying to get a feel for them.

He slips out from behind the prophet and approaches the dreadlocked lady,

"I know you, right? Sure, I've seen you around. Listen, my phone is being, like, a total pain and not showing my messages so I'm a bit late for this meeting. I can't believe they started without me!"

He peers into the conservatory as he talks and starts to edge around the guards,

"Hey, when I come back out we should catch up!"

Sure, you can get a look at the scene quickly. Everything is still nicely organised in the room aside from two chairs thrown backwards in anger and the remnants of a crystal tumbler and the whisky it contained sliding down the side of a wall.

Carmen's the one who's thrown the glass. She's snarling at Sheila who is staring daggers back at her. The wolf and the vamp are yelling at each other about a recent security contract, totally unrelated to what's going on right now. Trish looks on with the mild "disappointed in you" look that only a teacher or an expert mage can give, while Jerome has taken it upon himself to play peacemaker between the two.

Neither of those two are firing right now; the glass is comparatively worthless compared to what's being discussed as parts of the will and the entire thing is a show of bluster between the parties involved; veiled threats that are boiling over a little, unlikely to come to actual blows. But with so much political power in one place your "serve the powerful" one is starting to flinch the longer you're here.
