Just a slight point of order - the Flair mechanic and gaining a bonus dice for using a skill for the first time in a Risk are the same thing.

Also, when determining your raises could you all please note if you have any or no dice left over? This is important for me as the GM buying any spares (if I do you get an additional Hero Point and I get a point for the Danger Pool) and there are ways to work out raises to either maximize the amount of left over dice or to minimize them if you aren't wanting to risk having any bought from you

For example, Andrezi's last check rolled 4, 3, 4, 6, 10, 8 - that makes 3 raises in a couple of different ways either 10, 8+3, and 6+4 leaving 1 dice remaining to be bought or 10, 8+6, and 4+4+3 leaving no dice to be bought.

For now I will assume you are making your dice pools up in a way to leave the least left over dice as possible unless you specify otherwise on your rolls.

I get an additional HP from Valiant Spirit since we're starting a session. I'm also curious how mechanics off sessions will work. Once monthly or something?

I’ve amended the HP thread accordingly mate, thanks for the heads up. I’m not sure at the moment, this first ‘session’ is following a pre written adventure which is pretty short and would probably only last a session to run it IRL - seemed like a good way for me to get my head around the rules and also so we can see how 7th Sea performs on a PbP platform. Assuming things go well and you all want to keep playing (and I want to keep running it using the 2nd edition rules set) then we can define things like that a bit more clearly.

Just to give everyone a heads up SaucyWaffle is showing as inactive on the forums for 13 days now - I’m thinking to give it another day or so and if they don’t make their presence known then I’ll probably look to see if anyone else is interested is the slot.

One other thing is I recently picked up the ‘Bloody Misadventures’ supplement off of the Explorers Society as I’ve heard it adds a lot more depth onto naval combat so assuming it all looks good then I’ll probably try incorporating the rules from that into any future naval engagements.

"Aye aye!" Satterson states a bit of a smirk and a shine in his eyes with the talk of 'proper sailing and fighting at sea'

I’ve sent messages to both SaucyWaffle and Qralloq, if they don’t respond by tomorrow I’ll move things along
Apr 19, 2018 12:28 pm
Qralloq should be around. I've seen him in other games.
Apr 19, 2018 1:24 pm
I'm here. Still missed a key post, I guess, thought you were still waiting for saucywaffle.

Sorry, I’ll try to be clearer in future - I was initially waiting but then I had intended just to move forward and for them to jump in whenever but I can see where the confusion came from on that one. Usual teething issues with a new game (especially when I’m trying to not run it at too brisk a pace!)

I’ve not heard anything from SaucyWaffle and they’re still showing as inactive on the site so I’ve kicked them from the game and we’ll move on without them.

Heh, inactivity is the worst. No way to tell if it's IRL issues or permanent walkabout.

FWIW: I'm considering my post and hope to have it up in the next few hours.

Hi peeps, just wanted to let you know I've not forgotten about this game. I've been wanting to do a bit of reading on one of the naval combat supplements the Explorers Society for the next bit but I've been a bit swamped with work and other life stuff so I've not had chance. I'll try and get things moving again with the rules in the core book in the next day or two. Sorry again for the holdup!

*thumbs up* Just a heads up I'll be at Gen Con starting next Wednesday till that Sunday following.
Jul 23, 2018 2:37 pm
Gen Con, eh? Lucky bastard.
Jul 31, 2018 12:50 pm
I'll likely won't be posting until next Monday. Operation Gen Con starts in 20 hours.

About that inactivity... We picking this game up again? ;)
Aug 10, 2018 1:12 pm
Yes, yes we will! Now in fact!!!!!

Sorry again for the delay peeps, will hopefully not be a regular occurence

A heads up; I'm switching jobs next month, and I'll probably become a bit less active on the forums for a while. I'll be pulling back from some games, but I'm hoping to keep on top of this one, at least through this adventure.

Just letting you know in advance, in case I start getting flaky in October.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm hoping to have this adventure wrapped up by the end of this month so it should all be good.

Just to let everyone know I'm having a few internet issues at home at the moment (damn thing keeps dropping out, have reported it and waiting on a new router which should be some time this week) and I'll be going on holiday at the end of the week so my ability to regularly post will be a tad cut down for the next couple of weeks

Hi peeps, that would be the end of this little adventure. I wanted to get your thoughts on how things have gone, have you all enjoyed the game, did I run things ok for you all? Any comments you have would be good and appreaciated even if you felt things didn't go well (especially any of those instances).

The 'Eisen' had the Wily virtue hence his ability to slip away at the end.

For myself you have all been amazing, my issues with running this have been purely around struggling to get a firm feel for the system. To me things feel a little....loose. The lack of risk when you are doing things in ascene seems a little odd and it felt often like we were just in sort of an odd game of resource management. Not sure if I'm completely sold on the system as yet but that could be more down to this having been a scenario I pulled off of the Explorers Society and not something I came up with myself. As I said though I'm really interested in knowing your thoughts about how things have gone.

I had fun playing the salty "I'm too old for this Shtick" shtick.

My real time face to face group GM had a rough time with this as well for the spread of things going on during a scene it's a lot more improve I think then people realize for the GM for hard plot points/story line I think. It's been my second game on GP also and both have had those epic feels for the scenes, it's not always about combat mind you so doing other things and being to affect the outcome I think is nice.

It's a great system I think to roleplay in and XP is dynamic yet complex in that you as the player push towards completing your personal story and the GM throwing out hooks and opportunities for that for all the players plus weaving in the overall story was what my other GM struggled with.

Thanks for running. Private Kraken is dismissed on liberty. I think it would be an interesting story in the future for a setting, Three Ships One Squid.
Nov 21, 2018 2:21 pm
The system was confusing at first, and more toward the end, for me, particularly in Oportunities. I got it in my head that the ones you listed were the only ones I could use, and they didn't seem to be what I wanted to do. If I played again, I'd re-read the rules to see how to do other things.

It definitely hinted at the epic side of combat, and the inherent drama really added hooks to roleplay off of.

Definitely seemed like a lot of work for the GM, so thanks for putting in that effort and introducing me to an interesting system.
Nov 21, 2018 4:04 pm
The wonky thing about the system is you can create opportunities for people to use instead of taking an action I think. Asking Wick at Gen Con how do you run 7th Sea is like asking a Philosophy major how they're doing and you don't get an easy to understand answer from either situation.

For my real time group we ended at me sitting in a chair that turned into a demon with me in his lap. I would obvious be killed so the session ended with me asking if they'd like to be freed or would they be willing to hire on as a freelance pirate with us. GM laughed and ended the session/later the game so I never got the chance to find out. Nothing like having a demon pet your hair and realize you're sitting on their lap.

I love the setting, and the interactions with the other characters. I don't know about the action mechanics though.

It might be the PbP context, but I found myself having issues knowing what my options and limitations were. It didn't exactly help that I made a complicated character (focusing on non-combat skills and prefering not to do combatty stuff unless he has to). If I'd made a character that could go for the shoot/stab/steer options, this probably wouldn't have been as much of an issue. I thought I'd have more opportunities to do supportive actions when I made him. It didn't help that the situation sometimes shifted after we'd declared our actions (ending up with a lot of notice raises when there didn't seem to be much more to notice and so on).

It definitely seems to be a system that heavily leans on the face to face interplay to get the most out of it. the AP's I've seen all had a lot of ideas bouncing round the table as the game was going which seemed to work really well - in a pbp format that's not really possible and it seems like the game suffered a bit as a result.

I'm afraid at this point I've pretty much decided I'm not going to carry on with 7th Sea at the moment so I'll be closing this game off. The mechanics in the game just don't jive well with me in at least a pbp format (and I suspect the same niggles would still be there for me if I was to run this in a face to face game) but I love the setting so I'm hoping to convert it to another system (possibly Genesys). Thankyou so much again for being awesome in this game, my issues with the system aside I've had a lot of fun running this for you all and I loved the RP you all brought to the 'table'

Well I enjoyed it. Nothing like playing an old salty dog of the sea. "You know back in the day, I had a private under me that was a Kraken." People roll eyes, "Sergeant Kraken another barrel of grog!"
