Check out the thread in the gameplay section for me please Kalajel, since you're a much more experienced player and GM than I, I think, to your point, I was actually pretty incorrect as far as the initiative goes.

Yeah, read the combat section, and Initiative is indeed rolled using Agility.

So it looks like I determined whether the characters were surprised, but not yet initiative or did I mess up more than that?

Looks like you rolled initiative, but I'm not entirely sure how you rolled it. It looks like some characters rolled with Perception while others were rolled with some unspecified bonus. No offense, but I can't make sense of your rolls...

So what I thought that I did was roll a d20 for everyone as well as whatever bonus dice that character would have for perception. There were some characters that don't have stats in perception so they didn't have a bonus dice. So someone with a level 3 in perception would roll 1d20+1d8 I believe while someone with one level of perception would have 1d20+1d4. With my reading of the rules I thought I was doing initiative but what I was doing was actually whether the characters were surprised by the gnomes. So there isn't an intitave order at this point.

Either that or I made a mess with the post.

You said (and the rules state) that every roll matters in this game and since Ethan missed his Perception we were surprised. Okay, I get that now and I'm fine with that. Yet we still rolled with Perception. So I'm just trying to figure if this was initiative or not.

Also I'm supposed to roll advantage 1 on any attribute of 2 or less, that would have been 2d20 on Perception for me.

So what now? Do we do a "do over" for the initiative or were these Perception checks to notice the gnomes? Do we keep those for the first round of combat and roll initiative normally on subsequent rounds?

Edit: Okay, this was not initiative. So now we roll initiative for our characters now.
