Chapter 1: The Imposter
You are all members of the King’s Guard. You’ve been assigned to squad Alpha. Your direct superior is Lieutenant Miles Cornish, human. Your responsibility is guarding King Redmane. Today is the Festival of the Hunt, this is a festival held every year, celebrating the massive amount of wildlife that needs to be hunted to fend off the upcoming winters. It opens with a speech from the King, followed by the running of the boars. From there it is a week long festival where at the end of the week, the hunter with the most weight in meat wins a prize.

You’re all on stage, along with squad Bravo, as the King is giving his speech. The crowd is varied and quiet, listening to the King. Suddenly there is a loud bang on the opposite side of the town that shakes the whole town. What do you do?

Nicolas draws his mace and shield and walks next to the King, setting himself ready to shield the King if needed.
"Careful your majesty, stay behind us" he shouts hastily, he then tries to figure out where or what was the loud bang

Zadok snaps his fingers summoning the attentions of his retainers as the sound of the bang reached his ears. Almost immediately two of them flanked them, one holding his shield which he took with his left hand and the other holding his battle axe which he took with his right. "Get the King to safety." he commanded before heading in the direction of the bang.

Wendel takes up guard next to Nicolas, "Zadok, do not run off without the rest of us. My lord, Wendel addresses the King, "Perhaps Bravo team should escort you somewhere more secure while we investigate this disturbance."

  I was bored from the very beginning of this assignment. Standing still, not talking and not participating in festivities? Let me revise the "boring" part. It was torture! I lost count how many times I've cursed at my father's decision to send me to be a guard. Well, I suppose that it's better than to enlist into army. That was my second option. So yes, I was very not happy there. Until the moment an explosion was heard...

I'm trying to determine how far was the explosion from our current position and, if possible, where it occured exactly.

As you all take you positions, Lyss and the King notice smoke rising in the distance. The King shoved past you and jumps off of the stage, pushing through the civilians that are scrambling every where. Suddenly, at the far end of the marketplace, an gnoll seems to have come from nowhere. Looking around you also notice 8 people with black masks on that seem to be moving towards the King, weapons drawn.

Miles yells out. Guards, weapons!

Here’s the scene. You 5, along with Miles and the 5 members of Bravo are on stage. The king is off stage about 10’ away. 100’ away is an gnoll and a person in a black mask. 2 people with black masks are on either side of the crowd between 2 buildings. Dispersed in the crowd are the 5 others in masks.

Masked rogue 1 - (1d20+5)

(1) + 5 = 6

Masked rogue 2 - (1d20+5)

(4) + 5 = 9

Masked wizard - (1d20+3)

The black masked guards push their way through the crowd, towards the King. With all the civilians in the way, only 2 manage to reach him. The swing with their swords.

At the same time, the Wizard moves his hands and 3 magical bolts launch from nowhere at the king.

Miles jumps off of the stage and rushes forwards, striking at the nearest black masked guard.
OOC:
1 Black Guard misses, 1 does 14 damage, magic missile does 11 for 25 total against the King. Miles kills 1 BM Guard. Lyss and Nicolas, you’re up.

The arrow misses and sticks in the ground behind the black mask.

The King, feeling weak, swings wildly at the first Black Mask and then in an action surge, swings at the other.

Bravo team jumps off of the stage but can’t make their way through the townspeople to hit anyone.

The gnoll moves forward 40’ and throws a javelin at the king.

The second Masked Rogue moves through the crowd and attack Miles from behind.

King kills 2. Gnoll’s javelin sticks in the King’s shoulder. Rogue misses Miles.

Wendel stays on the edge of the stage where he can keep an eye on the situation, staying as close to the king as he can but still keeping the higher ground. Pulling his Druidic focus out he readies Frostbite to be cast on the next creature that directly threatens the king.
