General Banter (OOC)

Hi,

This thread is for random chitchats. Banter away!

TTT.

P.S. I just want to confirm that you guys can't see a subforum called "DM Screen"? Thanks.
Aug 12, 2018 2:33 am
Cannot see it.
Aug 12, 2018 3:21 am
I cannot see it either
Aug 14, 2018 12:34 pm
This is a test to verify my Breezy avatar. I am not sure of my thoughts on having to select 'Post As'. It should default to your character if you are a player, IMO... But at least it works as expected.

Lookin’ good, Breezy.
Aug 14, 2018 1:51 pm
Ditto to you Vardo.

Maybe everyone could test out their avatar here.

We’re nearing ready to play. Everyone has submitted their character sheet. Remus will be submitting his back story today. So if there is any lingering questions you want to ask me you can ask me now. 😎

Avatar test!

Ay, that worked. So, I've seen all the sheets posted on D&D beyond, but I don't know anything about Vardo. Did you end up going with Rogue in the end?

Can Breezy have a Staff of Frost? :D

Oh yeah, and what backgrounds did everyone take? Didn't see those.
Aug 14, 2018 4:10 pm
Hey Bleak,

I had made an NPC build through dndbeyond. I set it private but am not sure if it's accessible to people who are in the campaign. You didn't see an NPC character sheet on there did you? If you did I might have to redo it hehe.
Aug 14, 2018 4:11 pm
Well, I saw two things called 'Dummy Character' and 'Test Character', but ignored them. Not sure if that's what you were talking about.
Aug 14, 2018 4:13 pm
Ket, you mean like a staff that always has a coat of frost and is really brittle as a result? ;-P

Bleak says:

Okay, I made a character after that. Can you check to see if you see NPC's character sheet (please don't read it though).
Aug 14, 2018 4:17 pm
Nah, doesn't look like it's there. You're good.

Yeah, I went Rogue. He isn't dark and brooding; more life-loving and scoundrelesque.

I didn't put my sheet on Beyond. I'll try tinkering with that now so people can see it. I was wondering why I couldn't see peoples' character sheets when I clicked on their avatars - that's probably why. If you click on Vardo's avatar, you'll see his sheet.
Aug 14, 2018 4:23 pm
Tsavo, I don't know how Gamersplane does things but maybe they default to other players not being able to see your character sheet? I think Bleak is talking about seeing other's character sheet on D&D Beyond. I've noticed that the character sheets generated by D&D Beyond, do not give info about character's background/personality traits, ideals, bonds, flaws along with descriptive entries like eye color etc. even though those info are entered in the creation process. Maybe they deliberate keep that info private. Which is why I've asked everyone to include those info in the Gamersplane character sheets.
Aug 14, 2018 4:26 pm
Actually, I can't see anyone's sheets on GP. It just says 'No Character Found'. As for Beyond, I put my character's background and personality traits on it and they show up fine. Are they not visible for others?

Okay, I edited my background/appearance/personality into the GP sheet. However, I can't view the others' sheets here. Can you guys double check you made them public?

I can definitely see them. But, I'm also the GM. You clicked on the character's avatar? I guess, you don't need to see other's character sheets. There may be info they wanna keep private on there. Maybe GP defaults on side of caution that way?
Aug 14, 2018 4:43 pm
Oh! I bet if you add the character to the character library it'll be made public.
Aug 14, 2018 4:46 pm
Yeah, I did that with mine. Dunno if it worked or not.
Aug 14, 2018 4:54 pm
Yeah, if you go to 'All Characters' you can click the icon to add your PC to the library. It then shows up when you click the PC avatar. I can see Yohna but not Vardo. Also, when I view Yohna I click on 'Favorite' so when I look at the list of characters she shows up under my favorites.
Aug 14, 2018 4:57 pm
Ye I've got breezy favourited now.

Hey don't see where the favorite button is. Hmm.
Aug 14, 2018 5:01 pm
I think maybe GM can't favorite the characters. Which is... odd. (Although, I seem to have edit privileges).
Aug 14, 2018 5:22 pm
That's odd. It's not part of the game, just part of the public character library, so you should be able to

I just verified with the site maintainer that someone with edit privileges can't favorite a character at the moment.

See this thread.

Indeed (Good to have another Face in the party, two talkers are better than one). Holy crap though his stats are off the charts.

Ha! I almost made CHA his second highest stat. This guy loves to talk ;) But, in the end, I figured I'd go for better survivability. I wasn't sure how much he'd be needed in melee, and he's likely going arcane trickster, so not much CHA synergy there.

I could be easily convinced to swap those stats back so that he is the uber social guy...I just didn't want to tread on toes if someone else was thinking of playing a face type (and I didn't want to be the guy who couldn't help much in a fight). Whatever helps the team out more. I'm happy to tweak.

IIRC, both Tsavo and Andrew had good set of rolls.
Aug 14, 2018 5:59 pm
Hey Tonka,

When we level in game will we roll, get max, or take avg for HP increase?
Aug 14, 2018 6:00 pm
Yeah they did. NGL, that's the reason I hate rolling, but hey, it's done now and everyone's settled on what they're doing so no worries.

I actually had Vardo pegged as a Swashbuckler, given his personality, but I suppose the picture lends itself to Arcane Trickster more.

Tsavo says:
Hey Tonka,

You’ll have choice to increase by fixed amount given in the PHB (the avg, or I think it’s slightly higher than the average) or try your luck at rolling. Once you roll though, you’ll have to live with that result. Also, at each level you can decide which method to use.
Aug 14, 2018 6:05 pm
Yeah, I like swashbuckler and almost went that route. I figured (at the time) we could use the AT skills more than a pure melee build. I also figured I could play him with the personality regardless. His backstory and personality won't change. I like them too much.

But an avatar and a subclass are easy to change (right now) if the group prefers I go a slightly different way with him. I'm fine with pure face/swashbuckler. I just need to know if that works better before we get underway.

Avg it is (for me). I'd be gutted if I rolled a 1 for HP increase.

I just quickly checked (because I'm a pedant). It is indeed exactly the average (assuming fair die), (n+1) where n is the number of sides of the HD.

Or, another way...

It is intuitive to think of 4 as half of 8. So when you get 5 as the avg, it seems high. But there are 8 facets on the die, the first 4 and the last four. So technically, half, or the "middle value", is 4.5 (between 4 and 5). So, we round.

Not as technical, but that's how I've viewed the rationale behind it anyway.

PS: You use "pedant" as though it were a bad thing ;)

You're correct, it's slightly greater than the average, as I originally said. I made a really stupid arithmetic error. So not exactly the average.

The average or expected value for n-sided die is computed as

(1/n)*(sum from i=1 to n of i) and sum from i=1 to n of i is given by n(n+1)/2 (not hard to prove by induction).

so in the end the average is (n+1)/2.
Aug 14, 2018 6:37 pm
Your intuitive reasoning is probably the better way to think about it though. :)

Ah, that's why then. You do whatever you want to for him though, not trying to pressure you into anything. We've already got all our bases covered so there's really no need. I was just curious.

P.S. Ew, maths.

Not feeling pressured in the slightest :)

Genuinely happy for (and appreciative of) the feedback. Don't stop!

I was seriously agonizing over whether to go Swash or AT. I could still go either way and if one way helps the team out more that would push me over the edge. Minus any input, I'll go AT because "yay magic". Either way, he'll be a fun character and his personality is locked in.

It just comes down to do we need the extra melee or the extra craftiness/versatility? Don't think there's a bad choice.
Aug 14, 2018 9:16 pm
I rarely play anything but human or dwarf, and normally a cleric at that... This is going to be interesting, given Breezy's backstory. Forgive me if I am the clueless do gooder... cuz, well... I am... :)
Aug 14, 2018 10:00 pm
Nothing wrong with a clueless do-gooder when he has teammates of flexible moral values :)

AVATAR TEST!

Falka the meatshield/murderhobo barbarian reporting for duty. Feeling slightly inadequate with my point buy stats but no matter. I have a good feeling about roleplay in this party, and we've got all our bases covered!

RP will be great! I'm confident.

I can't see your character sheet though. Can you add it to the library?

Love your avatar! Psyched to get going with this great crew.

Wait... we actually have to RP our character??? So used to being a DM; this is maybe the 2nd time I have EVER decided to play, and I started gaming around 1979/1980... 😳😳

Game on!

I did that part. There's an avatar uploaded, but I don't see any way to set the "play as" avatar-in-avatar thing that everyone has. :( It's probably right in front of my face and I'm just not seeing it.

Aug 17, 2018 3:09 am
How's everyone enjoying the game so far? I hope it's not going too slow. I promise there will be dice rolling and combatting at some point.
Aug 17, 2018 4:01 am
It's been a little slow and awkward for me trying to figure out where I am and what's happening, since we're all kind of doing different things at once. I'm starting to catch on, though.
Aug 17, 2018 4:29 am
i'll try to speed things up a bit where i can. if i could start over, i may have just started everyone at red larch to begin with. my thought process was giving you guys chance to "find" your character by giving chance to just RP for a bit before starting the game proper, but PBP really lends itself to roleplaying period, so that seems a bit unnecessary now. i must admit, i am enjoying RP heavy game for a change also. but, i'm a fan of good mix of action and RP'ing too. maybe i should have injected an encounter on the journey to Red Larch.

as for everyone doing different things. i'm gonna plead innocent here. that particular issue is out of my hands :-)
Aug 17, 2018 4:59 am
I didn't mean slow as in the game or the scenarios, I mean slow as in I'm not used to reading through all the forum posts and things are out of order sometimes. You're doing fine. And none of it was meant as a complaint. ^_^
Aug 17, 2018 9:57 am
Once we are all formally together (instead of just travelling in the same loose group) with a specific common goal, it'll be easier to follow. D&D is always a bit tougher to manage when the group splits up (in person too). But we're just getting going and haven't properly formed into a single group yet.

We do need to find a way to get together and link up into a team. It feels like it's happening organically. I'm loving the game so far. Great way to start us off. I'm learning a lot about the other characters by getting to see where they chose to go and what they choose to do when they aren't locked into a role in a group.
Aug 17, 2018 11:41 am
You guys are all weird... no way Breezy would ever hang out with you on purpose... ;)
Aug 17, 2018 12:32 pm
Agreed it will go quicker when we are all together, but also really liking how you are tying our disparate posts together.

I posted. It’s tough during the weekends at home as my house is under renovation and I’m not on my laptop much. Later in the evening is easier. That said, especially now with combat, I’ll try to check more often.

So, Remus pointed this out to me, and I was wondering myself, but there seems to have been some miscommunication somewhere: How did Yohna end up in the middle of the room, when she was at the back at the start?

No worries, and it's a bit late to go messing with it now, just wondering so we can avoid the same confusion again.
