DDAL05-01.1 - Treasure of the Broken Hoard

Oct 4, 2018 2:44 pm
One of the most famous treasure hunters in the Realms, Veradda Stoor, has put out a call for assistance in tracking
down caches of treasure hidden by the now-defunct Cult of the Dragon in the Greypeak Mountains. Through luck, skill,
and the intervention of your faction, you have been chosen to assist her. You were told to meet her in a clearing along the
Black Road, east of the village of Parnast.

Your trip along the Black Road showed signs of goblin presence, but has otherwise been uneventful. Other travelers
you met claimed to have seen evidence of giant activity: runecovered boulders, huge footprints, and missing livestock. You
saw none of that evidence, however. Maybe it was just the overactive imagination of scared farmers and merchants?

When you reach the rendezvous point, Veradda Stoor is nowhere to be found. Countless footprints of various sizes,
and lots of bloodstains, mar the ground. A search of the area ultimately turns up the body of your would-be employer,
several-hours dead from a variety of wounds.

What is left of her equipment is scattered around the clearing. A large tome holding her notes is open on the ground
near her body. The last several pages have been torn out.
Oct 4, 2018 3:21 pm
Nikos kneels by the corpse, her sword stuck in the ground as a prop. Having seen no-one else around for the time being, she remains on guard, wondering if it was one of the hired hands, like her, that did this to her in a bid to secure the spoils for themselves. "So much for a legendary treasure hunter..." She mumbles to herself solemnly, before looking out over the carnage. She surveys the area for any tracks or signs that might lead to the woman's attacker.

Thrune spots the stranger as he arrives in the area. He calls out to avoid the chance of startling her as she is searching the ground. "Greetings! My name is Thrune. I am here to meet Veradda Stoor."

Thrune continues as he gets closer and sees the body on the ground. "You don't match the description, but she does. I may be able to help her. Do you know what happened?" He rushes over but realizes there's nothing he can do.
Oct 4, 2018 5:57 pm
Not far behind on the path is Ruby, softly playing her flute as she follows the path. Spotting several figures, she waves out to them "Hello there! I'm looking for the treasure hunter! Are you with the- oh..." Running up to meet the two, her voice becomes soft as the gruesome scene reveals itself.
Oct 4, 2018 6:39 pm
"Naught to be done, I'm afraid." Nikos stands up straight, shaking her head. She sheathes her weapon and folds her arms, appraising the two newcomers. "So far, I've no idea what happened to her. I'm looking for anything that might give us an idea of her attacker, though. I suppose you two are here looking for the cult's remaining spoils as well, then?"

She steps forward to Thrune and offers her hand in welcome. "An honor to meet you. They call me the Raging Waves, though Nikos is considerably less of a mouthful." She chuckles and looks to the halfling. "What about you, traveler?"

Good day.. Claims the human clothed in loose fitting garb, walking with his weapon(halberd) like that to a walking stick. I've come to claim this treasures.
Noticing the others. Well then, i guess i'm not the first, or only one here. Seeing all the mayhem, Say, what gives here? Rizak slowly lowers to ready his weapon.
Oct 4, 2018 8:27 pm
Rivas watches as the others meet and greet one another before slowly approaching. Without a word, he walks past the gathered adventurers and examines the ground around the corpse of his would be employer. He frowns as he studies the footprints and depressions in the earth.

After a moment he turns his gaze to the tree line and near horizons. Following a quick scan of the region, he faces his fellow adventurers. "Rivas Braloch; Paladin in the service of the Red Knight."

After the briefest of pauses, as though his announcement should have meant something, he adds, "I have no idea whether or not it is a pleasure to meet any of you. I'll find out soon enough. Whoever or whatever did this can't be too far off, and the opportunity for us to learn more of each other will present itself when battle is joined."

"In the meantime, I suggest we are better off working together rather than apart."

"I'm Ruby, last name Tealeaf. I was told to meet here for a treasure-hunt." She pulls out a piece of parchment, at the top reads "ADVENTURERS WANTED" and stashes it back into her pack. "I'm looking for a dragon, or information about their whereabouts and I figured a cult of dragons -gone or not- can help."

Approaching the scene she takes interest in the tome, examining the contents. "Does this happen often with treasure hunting? Finding dead bodies of your employer?" She asks earnestly while shaking her head faintly.

It can young one, Many peoples in search of treasures. Rizak says still holding his weapon at the ready.
Oct 4, 2018 8:48 pm
Searching about you eventually discover several scrolls on the body of Veradda. Here are the notes that you are able to put together based on your scouring of the scolls.

The First Cache. The first treasure cache was hidden by the Cult of the Dragon in an abandoned cave at the base at
of the southernmost mountain in the Greypeak range. While it was thought to be the smallest of the caches, it is also
not thought to be protected by any traps or magic. The caves and tunnels of the complex, according to my sources,
are not very structurally sound. Goblins are known to inhabit the area.

The Second Cache. My sources confirmed that one cache was buried beneath a unique structure: a pyramid of
stone resting on a flat field of stone in the middle section of the Greypeaks, directly between the two highest
mountains of that section of the range. The area was once rent with volcanic activity, making the flat stone field
difficult to navigate. My sources could not tell me who or what built the boulder pyramid.

The Third Cache. The source I questioned about this cache said that it was carefully hidden behind a secret
entrance in the wall of a green-sided mountain. There is only one of those in the Greypeak range, according to my
research. The source also said that the cultist who hid the treasure was an expert in magical curses.

The Fourth Cache. This cache was secured in an abandoned dwarven outpost used for treating ore that was being
prepared for use in weapon-smithing. My sources implied that the place had been overrun by something terrible and
immortal, causing the dwarves to leave it centuries ago. Subterranean volcanic activity has been reported in the area
regularly over the years.

The Fifth Cache. At the top of the tallest summit of the Greypeaks, one contact told me that there is an abandoned
shrine once revered by giants. Dragons used the area as a perch since then, and a cache is going to be hidden there.
Someone also told me that occasionally, when the wind is blowing in just the right direction, a pealing of loud bell
can be heard from there.
Oct 4, 2018 9:06 pm
Well, then. Rizak lowers his weapon. It seems we may all be after the same thing. I'm Rizak former City guard turnt treasure hunter. Rizak drops his "formal" accent and goes back to his more Southern Twang.

Now, y'all rekon we should be just go down the list thurr, have a start that them there first un' and just work a'way down? He goes back to the position of using the weapon as more of a walking cane.

OOC:
Not to gripe, but would it be possible to fix the formatting on those posts in future? Makes it kinda hard to read.
Nikos looks quite taken aback by the sudden and great shift in the man's accent, but shakes her head of it. She then turns back to the halfling woman behind her. "You're... Looking for a dragon? I hope you've a very good reason... Anyways." She looks at the book and scans down through the notes. "Judging by her description, the first cache would be the nearest. So, yes. I believe it would be best to start there... Although, we should take care not to meet the same fate as our employer here. I imagine her attacker may still be around."

Did Rivas and I find any clues as to her attacker?

"In the absence of any other information, it would be foolish to assume the perpetrators are not still nearby. We should've care in our movements not to be caught off guard."

Rivas nods at Nikos, "The closest cache makes the most sense. We should start there."
Oct 4, 2018 10:24 pm
Thrune addresses the group. "It is an honor to meet all of you. I am Thrune Drummson, priest of Sharindlar, Lady of Life and Mercy. We were chosen for this mission -- I agree that we should complete it to honor Veradda Stoor's legacy."

"If anyone would like a some divine assistance with their examinations, please let me know. Meanwhile, I need to check our unfortunate employer to see if I can determine how to honor her deceased soul before we bury her."

Thrune checks for holy symbols or other clues while he tries to remember rituals from other faiths.

Oct 4, 2018 11:12 pm
Unfortunately, searching the area doesn’t provide you any additional clues as to who may have committed this crime. The tracks are clearly humanoid of various sizes but little else can be determined. They lead off to the West back in the direction of Parnast.

Thrune finds no indication as to Veradda’s religious affiliations. After careful thought you feel as though you could either bury Veradda here and try to get word to her next of kin via messenger or take her body back to Parnast and let it be taken care of there. In either case you feel you should explore the Cache locations as she would have wanted.
Oct 4, 2018 11:47 pm
OOC:
The first cave is southwest of your current location. While not a direct route it wouldn’t be crazy for you to travel to Parnast first then south from there.

As far as formatting goes could you provide any more feedback? I’m not sure what you would want changed in order for it to be read easier?

Thrune again addresses his new companions. "Friends, we should not allow such an esteemed person as Veradda Stoor to suffer the indignity of a crude burial. I suggest we go the Parnast, where she can be treated properly, then onto to the first cave. Perhaps we can find useful information in Parnast as well. Of course, we need to keep our destination a secret."

Bleak says:
"You're... Looking for a dragon? I hope you've a very good reason... Anyways." She looks at the book and scans down through the notes.
"Oh but I do. I'm looking for my father. He was a dragon, brass I think." Ruby pulls down her shirt sleeve, revealing an arm with brass scales littered amongst the skin. "Well pretty sure he's my dad, thats what mother says. I have so many questions I'd like to ask him." She speaks with enthusiasm.

Hearing the party's conversation, she chimes in: "I second that, those cache's are still out there just waiting to be found. Particularly this fifth one..."
Oct 5, 2018 6:57 am
OOC:
Yeah, same here. I was assuming, since it's only on the larger posts, it was because you were taking them directly from the PDF, and pasting from PDFs often causes issues like that. It's just line breaks every 150 characters or so.
"A warrior should be buried where they fall, in my eyes." Nikos says, chipping in on the subject for a moment, then locating the path that would take them to the cave. "If you wish to fulfill her last rites at Parnast, I won't stop you, but I believe we'll be going on ahead to fulfill her wishes."

A few moments later and she chuckles at the halfling's story. Certainly an interesting one. "As noble a reason as that is, you shouldn't be so eager to rush in to the den of dragons without first knowing who they are. Few tolerate people."

"The gods look favorably upon those who follow traditions. Stopping at Parnast will be but a small delay."

"I can wrap the body while some scout the area. Forgive me for causing any strife. I only want to do what is right."
Oct 5, 2018 5:15 pm
"It would be rude to leave her here, and I'd hate for any Gods to be angry at us. Thrune let me help." Ruby is already gathering the scattered belongings.

Oct 5, 2018 6:04 pm
Nikos sighs and lets out a low chuckle. "You're stubborn, aren't you, priest?" She smiles and sets her hands on her hips resolutely. "Very well. We'll take her back to Parnast. Well..." She pauses, then looks to the paladin and nods to herself. "Rivas, wasn't it? While these two return the body to the town, what-say you we scout ahead? Goblin troubles in the area, supposedly, and we wouldn't want to be caught off-guard."

DM Prompt - So just so you guys don't waste too much time I'll let you know that these Adventurer's League modules are alot more "on the nose" then the hardcover adventures. They are designed to railroad you for the most part through a particular adventure, generally in 4 hours. So I will do my best to "steer" you in the right direction and if you guys seem to be off the trail I will try to guide you back in the direction needed. So sometimes if it feels like I'm glossing over something you can either falt out ask me OOC or I will eventually give you a DM prompt to prevent extended periods of wasting time.
A couple hours pass and you are able to scout the area and feel confident you are alone. As a couple keep vigilant watch the others are able to bury Veradda and leave a marker so she can be located if a loved one wishes to pay her a final visit.

Once the ceremony is complete you begin heading in the direction of the first Cache.

After about a days travel you find yourselves at the foothills of the Graypeak mountains. The clues in Veradda's notes lead you directly to the cave opening. Outside the opening you see a variety of obvious tracks.

At the very least, they can overwhelm you with numbers. At worst... They can be crafty."

"Indeed. This could be a treacherous approach." Nikos muses, then looks to Rivas with a nod. Now able to see his heraldry, she smirks slightly. "A paladin of the red knight, are you? One who searches the land for battles to be fought... A respectable oath, and a man after my own heart." She thinks aloud, her eyes not once leaving the path ahead.
Oct 5, 2018 10:43 pm

Rivas raises one brow at Nikos’s comment. "You are familiar with my order?" The paladin’s eyes, likewise, remain on the task at hand. Scanning for threats, sword gripped and at the ready, he adds, "Yes, the Red Lady honours strategy and intelligent warfare above brutish bashing about. So I’m not sure your characterization of seeking out battles necessarily fits, however I take your meaning."

The half-elf allows a brief smile to play across his lips. "And truth be told, I do relish the opportunity, when it arises, to put the fear of the Red Knight into evil doers. Why should the good being of the realm hog all the fear for ourselves? Those who would spread hurt deserve a taste too, don’t you agree?"
Oct 6, 2018 11:28 am
"Most certainly. My tribe follows a similar creed. We travel between battlefields, and while it is not our place to turn the outcomes of war, we stand in defense of those it would otherwise trample. Farms, villages, the like. Those who would see fit to pillage and loot are the ones who face our ire." She looks around cautiously, tightening her grip on the blade.

"It's awfully quiet in here. Doesn't sit right with me - It wasn't just goblins at the entrance, but giants, too."
Oct 6, 2018 11:38 am
Rivas touches the crossgaurd of his sword to his brow in salute to the female at his shoulder. "We may not serve the same deity, but we certainly serve the same philosophy and are driven by kindred purposes. You can count on me to have your back for as long as we share the same road."

Salute and oath over, he turns his full attention back to the task at hand. "Yes. More than just goblins. As I suspected..." He continues his visual sweep of the area as the group progresses deeper into the cave system.
Oct 6, 2018 4:25 pm
You traverse the tunnel past the cave opening until it opens into a large cavern. The large cavern is empty of living creatures, although several lanterns around the room provide light. Rubble is piled up three feet high in several places throughout the cavern, and two tunnels lead out. The tunnel on the south wall is clear, but the tunnel to the east is chocked with debris. Dust still rides the zephyrs circulating through the cavern, leading you to believe the cave-in to the east was recent.

I feel like this is the objectively worst time to point this out but... I noticed Rivas has d12 hit dice. Paladins have d10.

On the other hand, I don't think we're coming out of this.

Quick question before I take my action though: I realize I acted without knowing where G3 was just there, sorry. If Nikos moves next to them, would it be similarly assumed she discovers them? And would she be able to do so based on knowing they were there prior? Basically, can she reach G2, based on the assumption it's still there, and attack?

I stated that if you run the goblins down you can spot them...just that you needed a perception check to spot them from a distance due them hiding.

And I'm not sure what you are looking at for the hit die as I have Rivas listed with 12hp max.

Right, thanks. Thought I'd acted out of turn and you'd just rolled with it.

Bloodied and cursing herself for it, Nikos supports herself on her blade, half her face covered in blood from a gash opened by the latest arrow. She is just about to blindly charge at the first target she sees when she feels a soothing warmth spread throughout her, beginning to repair the worst of her wounds. She is still battered, but turns to Thrune with a worn nod of appreciation.

With her head back in the fight, she raises her sword over her shoulder again and lunges towards the mound south of her, roaring as she drags her blade along the ground behind her, giving off a horrific screech of tortured metal. The moment her target comes into view, she heaves the weapon upwards in a single swing.

Rivas does have a d10 hitdie. He also has a +2 con modifier. That's why he has 12 max hp.
Rivas immediately fights the urge to charge into battle. The desire to repay these creatures almost entirely overwhelming his ability to think strategically. With a calming breath, he pulls the shafts from his body, lays his hand over the wound, and with a low muttering appeal to the Red Lady, watches the worse of them close before his eyes.

With a renewed sense of stability, his head snaps up, eyes levelled on his enemy, and marches directly toward the nearest with his massive greatsword swishing back and forth in anticipation of hewing the beast's head from its shoulders.

A scurrying sound and some high-pitched squeaking echo fromthe south tunnel. You look, expecting to see rats or someother vermin swarming toward you. Instead, you see an angry looking swarm of goblins. These goblins, however, are no larger than mice. YES!

Nikos is careful not to hit Bas with her attack and comes up empty as a result! Rizak too misses with his first swipe but manages to do some damage on the follow through, just not very much. The swarm has begun to thin greatly before Thrune comes in with his war hammer, managing to catch all the remaining goblins under his hammer!

With the path to the east impassable, the south passage is clear and you round the corner of the southern tunnel until you come to the next chamber. This cavern, like the last, is lit with lanterns throughout. To the north, at the far end of the corridor, you can see a small creature dressed in ratty furs, wielding a club. He stands in front of a stone chest that is even with his eyes. His back is to
you, and you catch the sound of angry rumbling coming from his direction, but it is too faint to hear clearly.

Then a yappy growl to your left alerts the creature, and it turns. It has the countenance of a terrible hill giant, but the
stature of a goblin. It shrieks in fury: ͞Slayermighty the Giant will tear you apart and feed you to Blooddrinker! He charges toward you.

The giant's body holds no clues but you do find a Potion of Healing.

Now that the threat of the giant has passed you notice a bear in the western corner that, now that you think about it, was snarling the entire time you were fighting the "giant" However the bear is only the size of a small house cat, so it was paid no mind. Now that its giant master is dead it seems to have begun to calm down. As you approach it however you seem to observe the curse wearing off, but instead of increasing in size, the small animal begins to convulse...

The clues in Veradda Stoor's notes lead you to the a field of pure stone in the central park of the Greypeak range. There you are directed a pyramid of boulders the cache is said to be hidden within.

In the distance, at the base of two of the massive Greypeak Mountains in the central range, you see a large pyramid comprised totally of boulders. The structure is at least 60 feet high, and from this distance it looks as though there might be an opening at the top.
Between you and the base of the boulder pyramid is a solid stone field. The field is flat and smooth with a slight upward incline, but in places the stone is rent with deep gouges – so deep that it is impossible to tell how deep the gouges go. Even the widest gouge is less than 3 feet wide and easy to cross if care is used.

The pyramid, upon closer inspection, is indeed comprised of gigantic boulders that must have rolled down the mountainside over the centuries. Whatever stacked them like this must have been very strong or used powerful magic. The boulders at the bottom appear to have been fused together in some way, while the ones further up are simply stacked carefully or held together with mortar. Many of the boulders are etched with runes.

As far as the recovering hit points in a short rest for an unconscious player - I rule that to do so another player would need to sacrifice their short rest in order to tend the wounds of the unconscious character in order for them to awaken and heal.

"Verily. Someone trained those badgers well."

"Rizak, what do think of you drinking Bas' healing potion, and I tend Nikos during the short rest. Then you two can explore the boulder pyramids if you think that would be worthwhile. The treasure, or another snide note, is probably here somewhere."

After the rest, Thrune starts with a prayer, "Thank you, Lady Sharindlar, for bestowing your healing mercy upon us."

He then turns to the group, "At the pyramid, I offer to cast a Guidance cantrip to increase anyone's skills in searching for secret openings, deciphering runes, or whatever else you think may help. Although I must do it one at a time."

As you finish you sentence, two more sets of eyes open up in boulders on either side of the first one.

Hello, they both speak in unison.

The first one begins to respond to Thrune, I would love to help but unfortunately I can’t move because of my place here in the pyramid. You see my two siblings here and I have been a part of this structure for about a year now. Some humans, with the help of a dragon, built this pyramid and placed several wooden chests inside. We are very happy to have been selected to build such a great structure. Their parents and aunts and uncles spent decades as part of a wall down in Dragonspear Castle. (The things they have seen!)

"You and the others are doing a great job in forming this pyramid. I can tell you have held together against the elements very well. Most walking creatures do not appreciate the efforts of rocks providing shelter and protection, but I, as a dwarf, admire your steadfastness."

"We dwarves are known for our building skills. As a matter of professional curiosity, do you have a floor of your kinfolk lining the bottom of this pyramid? Also, are there one or more openings to allow for air circulation and prevent the growth of fungus?"

No it is just the three of us. This is Hhffft and this is Prrrt.

Hello! the rock creatures again both speak in unison.

And my name is Ggrrkk. We are galeb duhr, places here as guardians. Speaking of pests Prrrt here has been having some trouble with stone-boring beetles infesting it’s lower extremities. They tickle terribly and he is unable to do anything about it. Would any of you be able to help with that?
Dec 1, 2018 9:37 pm
Nikos, more than a little dumbfounded by this turn of events, blinks twice and then shrugs. "How hard did I hit my head..." She mutters to herself, then clears her throat. "Just beetles, aye? Shouldn't be much of a problem."
Dec 2, 2018 7:52 am
"We would be glad to help. Forgive me, but I want to make sure. Are you Prrrt," Thrune says. opening his palm in the direction of one of the galeb duhr, "or are you?" Thrune holds his palm open toward the other one.

Thrune - You recognize the beetles and recall a remedy. Using some herbs you are able to produce a salve and apply it on Prrrt who immediately feels relief. This puts the stone creatures in an excellent mood and they tell you the following information.

A giant climbed up here not too long ago. he shoutedSLEET GIANT KING and then bellowed in pain. Only silence followed.

With that they bid you good luck.

Since the party is not rushed for time in a big way, Thrune will cast Guidance on Rizak if he wants to continue climbing, then when he's done, on Nikos if she wants to continue climbing, then, when she's done, on himself to keep climbing. Thrune repeats the process on all three. He is definitely ascending to the top.

All 3 of you make it to the top of the pyramid with relative ease. The top of the pyramid is not capped; instead, four boulders frame a large opening between them. That opening, at the moment, is plugged with the body of a giant. Its thick hide and hairless body makes you think it is a stone giant, but it is difficult to tell: you can only see its enormous legs and backside. The rest is facing down into the top of the pyramid. Each of the four boulders at the top contains a series of runes. The runes glow with an obvious magical light.

Thrune stands by the rocks and proclaims, "Hail Dragon Queen!"
Dec 16, 2018 7:43 am
As soon as Thrune finishes the phrase, the light emanating from the runes ceases to glow. You struggle for a few minutes but then manage to remove the giants body from within the opening of the pyramid.

While moving the giants body you find a pouch containing a scroll. The writing on the scroll seems indecipherable to you but you can tell it is of an arcane nature.

You peer into the now clear opening of the pyramid. At the bottom of the pyramid, 60 feet down, lies several open chests. A few broken, burned, and bloated kobold bodies lie amid the chests. After scanning the area for a minute, you notice a large hole in the ground at the corner of the pyramid. A few small digging implements, picks and shovels sized forkobolds, lie broken near the hole.
Dec 17, 2018 4:54 pm
Thune puts the scroll in his backpack, "We probably need a spell to read this."

From the top, he looks in the hole in the corner, to see if it is empty. "Rizak, if we need to, would you mind climbing down? I'll stay up here to pull you up if necessary."

The hole in the corner looks like a tunnel the kobolds came in through.

Rizak has no trouble climbing down into the pyramid. A thorough check of the area reveals the following.

All that is left of the treasure is a necklace made of human ears, a magnifying glass with the glass missing, and a deck of playing cards marked so inexpertly that anyone could tell. All are worthless except for the novelty.

Kobold tracks indicate that a large number of those creatures were here, and they tunneled into the pyramid through the floor.

A crumbled piece of paper rests next to one of the kobold bodies, and it contains the following instructions, written in Common:

Rizak heads off to his room in the tavern.
Jan 9, 2019 7:03 pm
Yawning, Karvir shuffles to the common toilet. His fine robe just barely covers the important parts. "Afternoon, Love" he says with a wink to the young serving girl, Mira, just outside his door.

"It's early morning yet, my Lord!" She appears to have been about to knock on his room door.

"Oh good, I was afraid I might have missed something. Adventure awaits us today!" With that, Karvir sits down on the toilet and gives the girl another wink before sliding the door shut.

Sitting alone now, Karvir pulls his purse from his robe pocket and quickly counts the contents. Disappointed, he hangs his head low between his legs.

Not even two nights worth. Trolls breath! We'd better find that treasure horde soon.

Having returned to his room and gotten dressed, Karvir calls out with a cheer "Mira!" The girl steps into the room less than a second later. "Hoot girl! You sure are good at that." Mira has been working for Karvir for the better part of two months now and she's learned a few tricks that keep the young noble more than pleased with her service. The lordling is unpredictable at best for when he will wake, but he is always needing something shortly after he does. Thankfully, Karvir will always relieve himself before calling. So Mira pays the inn's servant girls a copper each from her own pay that Karvir gives her (a full silver each day!) When they see the lordling wake they quickly fetch Mira so she can present herself as soon as called for.

"Well, please clean up this mess. And hurry, that housekeeping girl will be in shortly. I don't want her to think ill of me."

"Right away, my lord!" Mira says, snapping a sharp mock salute.

After a quick breakfast in the common room, Karvir heads outside to find Mira waiting with his backpack in hand and mule fully loaded and ready. It carries a chest atop its pack saddle, with a coil of rope on one side and, curiously, a horn on the other. Karvir's own pack appears well organized and tidy, with only a lantern handing from the outside.

"Adventure awaits, my Lord," she says, handing him his pack.

Karvir takes the pack, adjusts his fine clothes, checks on a pan flute held in a deep pocket, does a short hop while pulling the pack's straps forward and declares "Right! Let's join the others."

Gotta love that Dwarven constitution.

The group's meeting place is the corner table nearest the entrance to the inn. Thrune lays a scrawled piece of parchment on the table. "Karvir and Elaris, we are following the notes of the famed, but now deceased, treasure hunter named Veradda Stoor. We found two of the five treasure caches mentioned in her notes. Unfortunately, both treasures were stolen by others, possibly fire giants. May the gods grant us better luck with the next cache."

Thrune passes the note to his two new companions. It reads:
The Third Cache. The source I questioned about this cache said that it was carefully hidden behind a secret entrance in the wall of a green-sided mountain. There is only one according to my research. The source also said that the cultist who hid the treasure was an expert in magical curses.

Karvir begins visually inspecting the cliffs, alternating between above and (as best as he can) below. He'll poke and prod anything that looks promising, but would be careful not to actually push anything more than a small amount as he is worried about traps.

If the process takes more than a minute, he'll take time to cast Unseen Servant as a ritual and instruct the thing to do the poking and prodding for him. I wasn't clear on this earlier, and in case it matters: Thrune stepped over one square to the right of his placement on the map above to check out the tunnel before going back and talking with his companions.

Did he notice anything obvious about the other door from this distance?

"I Rekon i could do that. Which one wes be gettin inta?"
Rizak sets out his lanter and prepares it.

"STOP!" Karvir commands in a near shout, palm held out toward Mira and the mule. Then, melodramatically, "Ahead lies danger and beasts of ancient horror - no place for one so young and sweet as yourself. Stay here and watch over... that beast." He eyes the mule with disdain as the fetches a coil of rope and places it over one shoulder. He then adjusts it and places it over the other. He considers for a moment and then places it on one shoulder, crossing over his chest. He smooths his finery and reaches out to take the lit lantern that Mira has prepared for him while he worked on his rope.

"I will lead the tail end of our party."
OOC:
Karvir will be last in the marching orders. He carries a lantern. His hired servant, Mira, and the mule will wait outside by the entrance.

So, the marching order is Rizak, Thrune, Elaris, and Karvir down the southernmost tunnel. I think I should've rolled something for my question about the other door, so I will now.
Thrune looks in the direction of the other door as they head down the tunnel. He is looking for signs of a trap on the door.

Thrune - You don't notice any traps on the other day as you move by it. As you enter the tunnel however, you pick up on the fact that the wall on the inside is not carved out for a path and sports no door.

Rizak - You lead the group down the southern path, eventually coming to an intersection. Keeping a sharp eye out you notice that the flooring of the intersection just doesn't look right (red X on map). Upon closer investigation you discover it to be some kind of pit trap.

i would think either activating it and stepping over the to the ledges? or just steping over it? is there a lip?
Feb 12, 2019 9:12 pm

You could attempt to leap over it but due to the angle to safely jump I would ask for an athletics or acrobatics check from anyone attempting to do so. Otherwise how do you wish to trigger it?
Feb 12, 2019 10:48 pm
Thrune thinks about what Rizak said and addresses the group, "How about we push a good-sized boulder on the pit trap? Then after it's open, we'll know where it is safe to walk."
Feb 13, 2019 4:31 pm
"Sounds good to me." Setting his lantern down beside him, Karvir takes off his backpack and rope, then ties the rope through the shoulder straps and around the pack. "This should do!"

The steps as close as he dares to where Rizak believes the trap to be. He whirls the pack around and then hurls it out over the trap.
Feb 14, 2019 2:00 am
The pack lands on the false floor with a thud, nothing happens other than some dust rises off the ground. You get the idea that it will take a bit more weight than your pack to trigger the trap.
Feb 14, 2019 5:10 am
Thrune looks for a good-sized boulder. If he finds one, he asks Karvir to pull back the backpack, then Thrune rolls the boulder over the trap without stepping too close to it.

You continue down the path until the tunnel opens up. The floor of this large chamber is covered with ice (DIFFICULT TERRAIN). Two large humanoid figures, frost giants by their appearance, lie dead in the center of the room. Each clutches a bloody greataxe in its hands, and each seems to have died from slashing wounds created by large bladed weapons. On the far side of the room is a three-foot-tall pedestal, and atop the pedestal rests a giant diamond. The diamond gleams with an inner light that is definitely supernatural

"Use caution, my friend. The magic on this diamond may have caused them to fight each other."
Feb 22, 2019 6:10 pm
"Is this the only way into this chamber?" Karvir leans into the room, maybe taking a few steps if necessary to gain a better perspective. "So we have dead giants that seem to have been protecting some sort of ice diamond. The giants went crazy and killed each other. Or something else equally big killed them, but we didn't see any of those giant traps that were set off." Karvir stands there, thinking for a moment.

"Look, whatever this is, I don't trust it. I especially don't trust walking around in that room until we know what is going on. I think we should send in my handy dandy unseen servant and poke and prod things for a few minutes to make sure nothing drops on us."

Karvir begins making preparations to cast Unseen Servant, wholly expecting no objections to his genius plan.
Feb 22, 2019 6:33 pm
OOC:
@Sclasclemski After re-reading the room description, I have a question. I may be overthinking this, but is a battleaxe considered a bladed weapon? I think that applies more to swords and daggers.

Feb 23, 2019 3:42 am
Karvir - You take a few steps onto the icy surface and looking to your left you observe 3 other tunnels leading into the larger cavern

Thrune - Battleaxe's have a sharp edge on them and their "slashing" damage could certainly be categorized as bladed. Also the majority of the cavern appears to have been carved out ages ago but you do see signs of more recent (years not decades ago) work being performed.
