Quick question regarding character creation, rules say "Any class from PHB" but are paths from other books like Xanathar's allowed?

If it's from an official book (but not UA), then it's fine.

The main restriction is races - that's the only non-negotiable thing :)

Quick question to everybody:

Are you alright with me the DM doing all Initiative rolls and all Saves?

It can be a drag in play-by-post games to wait for everybody roll their Dex saves when encountering a trap or delay until all Initiatives are gathered.

Attack rolls etc. are of course rolled by the players.

Even without the restriction, I'd never think of going non-human for a Darkest Dungeon game :D

(3, 3, 4, 6 ) = 13
(2, 2, 4, 4 ) = 10
(1, 1, 2, 6 ) = 9
(2, 3, 3, 6 ) = 12
(1, 2, 2, 6 ) = 10

Pretty average stats, I'm fine with any class so I'll let others take a pick, I'm happy to fill in any void in the end.

I don't see a reason why they should be banned, but honestly, I wonder why anyone should bother. Feats are pretty powerful in 5e and considering that +1 proficiency can be spent on firearms (from what I reckon) it's a much more powerful package than +1 to all attributes. Just my $0,02.

Yeah, pretty much.

And yes, the +1 proficiency can be put on firearms.

Good question. They ARE listed as "Martial Ranged Weapons", so yes, I'd argue that as the game world includes these weapons, then the classes mentioned are proficient with them.

I've made up my mind, going for Highwayman using the Rogue/Scout build.

@Geninsect I'd go Bard/College of Swords for Jester, with Rogue/Arcane Trickster or even Rogue/Assassin as alternatives. Leper could either be based on Cleric with domains like War and Protection or a greatsword wielding Fighter (Champion or Battle Master) or Paladin (Oath of Devotion, maybe Vengeance)

Another question, character creation rules state "Equipment from Background (sell any unwanted items for half price) + 50 gp" but no mention of the equipment from class. Do we still get to choose one of the packs from there or is it replaced with the 50gp?

Yes, you get the Class equipment too, I'll correct the description. The bonus 50 gp is for the 3rd level start.

That's... a lot of spells!

Dwarvish and Elvish don't exist in this setting, so just switch them out with languages from the post above!



Also, for Level 2 and Level 3 roll your Hit Dice or take the Class average, as per the PHB rules.

This applies to Albrecht as well! Or did you all just get maximums on your HD rolls? :)

Pretty sure I read we should take max for the first 3 levels and start rolling once we hit 4. I'll fix it asap.

Variant humans get the same languages as "standard" humans: Common and one extra language of your choice.

(The variant traits only replace the Ability score increases, all other traits (Size, Speed, Languages etc.) remain unchanged)

Certain backgrounds also give proficiency in one or several languages.

Also, DarK_RaideR, Albrecht has the Criminal background, and gets a Criminal Contact: if you don't have anything in particular in mind, I can offer the leader of one of the bandit gangs that operate in the nearby woods and roads as your contact.

Didn't bother with the contact as I figured roleplay and story would be close to zero, with DD essentially being an extended dungeon crawl. Depending on what you have in mind for those aspects and the pace of character rotation (a.k.a. expected mortality rate) I'll take either that or some other NPC that might evolve into Albrecht's replacement PC

Although I have always wanted to play Darkest Dungeon I have never had to opportunity. Using the warlock that I have submitted, I will attempt to play what imagine the Flagellant is like. Elias the Flagellant will be ready to play as soon as I get spell selection and inventory sorted out.

I put up an intro to set the scene and the tone!

1. Just put something simple as your Background Feature. Don't flesh it out or anything. Even though it's a dungeon crawl, these things MIGHT end up being useful, like DarK_RaideR's criminal contact. Maybe your Hermitic Discovery as a Flagellant is "through pain and suffering comes knowledge and enlightenment"?

Also, these Features help me to hand out tasty thematic quirks and insanities :)

2. Not in the dungeon itself. But the game is not one infinite crawl, but rather a series of crawls. So from time to time you return to the village, between delves. In the village, most basic items are available. And there are traveling merchants, who sell rare items or buy up the treasures youbring back from the dungeon.

The 50gp and any extra money you can just "spend" during character creation, if you want.

@evil_scientist: Understood. Elias will not have much use for worldly possessions beyond food and water, so he will probably sell or give it all away. Mortal flesh is weak and impure!

I intend to flavor most, if not all, my spells as involving some form of mortification of the flesh. I have not yet fleshed out what sort of inscrutable entity Elias has made his pact with. What is certain is that it demands this self-flagellation as tribute. How do we do that? Obviously it would be insane to have him actually deal damage to himself!

Chose Impulsive Compulsive (suffers intense need to do specific actions) as my first negative quirk. Initially I was going to have him flog himself as the specific action but I may come up with some other thing. We'll see.

Really excited to begin!

For starters, let's just go with standard rules!

But if Elias survives long enough ;) I think we can come up with more in terms of fluff/background and also mechanics.

I can imagine house ruling in some Flagellant stuff, like sacrificing HP to get an extra spell slot (like Sorcerers with Sorcery Points).

Perhaps you can try mapping in Google Documents, an Excel table?

I don't know any good resources for online mapping.

A lot of guys on the site have been using Google Sheets. A little clunky, maybe, but does the job, and is easy to use and share. Should the party start making our own map or do you already have one that you can share with us (after covering unexplored areas with "fog of war" of course!)?
