"I appreciate your concern, but sadly I cannot accept your offer. Knowing the town. Everyone must already be cramped and taking up every available space at the inn, and I know for a fact that Bildrath will not open his shop, much less to hold a corpse, not without demanding a fortune in gold first at least... No, there are no place at the town square to hold my father's corpse, so I must remain here. But do not worry, the mansion is very well barricaded and I am quite capable of defending myself. You can go back to the town square and inform my brother that I am well and that the darkness has not claimed my father yet. Now please, you must leave, you are not safe out there and you are interrupting my vigil."

Darren turns from the door and looks to Roland and Veroth with a shrug, "What now? We can't make her leave."
Aug 3, 2016 6:52 pm
You make your way back to the town square without any problems. Luckily for you, this particular street seems to be rather free of the undead at the moment. You eventually meet your friends back at the town square. The villagers working to repair the barricades a bit nervous about Veroth's presence, but since he seems to be with you, they are not panicking anymore.

Once back with the others, Darren seeks out Ismark, "Ireena would not return with us. She said she had to stay and protect the remains of your father. I'm sorry we couldn't bring her back, but she refused to come."
Aug 3, 2016 7:15 pm
Damn... Weiryn says at the news. If you are willing to try again, I will go there with you and make an attempt. I would rather not leave anyone to the fate that these creatures have planned for them...and I don't want to take a chance of her father turning, if it's within my power.
Aug 3, 2016 7:17 pm
"I tried to tell her that you and I could put her father to rest if we brought the body here, but she wouldn't do it," Darren says, frustration evident in his voice, "Hopefully we can do something to change her mind..."
Aug 3, 2016 7:19 pm
Ismark chuckles. "Yeah, this does not surprises me one bit. She's always been headstrong, kind of like my father... I'm reminded when a few months ago, he who rules the castle—that devil Strahd—tried to pay us a visit. I don’t know why. However, my father bravely stood up to him, using the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind."
He cusps his glass...
"Hmm... and look where this has gotten him... dead from poison, most likely assassinated by an agent of Strahd... Too bad the Holy Symbol stopped working for me and my sister afterward... Sorry, I'm digressing. I don't know why I'm bothering you with those details... Still, I thank you for looking out after my sister."

Weiryn will remember a few tidbits of information about the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind.
The Holy Symbol of Ravenkind is a unique holy symbol sacred to teh good-hearted faithful of Barovia. It possesses powers that can only be accessed after the item is specially bonded to its wielder.
It actually predates the establishment of any church in Barovia, and its existence is thought to be a reason for the prevalence of the raven symbol in that land. It was first used by a paladin named Lugdana, who was among the earliest settlers of the valley.Edit: @ Jabes: Its okay man, you'll learn something else Weiryn did not know...
Ujjaya will also remember that, according to legend, a giant celestial raven—or an angel in the form of a raven— delivered teh Holy Symbol of Ravenkind to Lugdana so she could use it to root out a nest of vampires. To this day, vampires have a powerful loathing for the holy symbol and all it represents.

I assume all these are pre-Strahd information which were available before the valley suddenly became isolated, otherwise it doesn't make much sense that players could learn these with Knowledge checks if the valley is so unknown to them...Ujjaya will also remember that, according to legend, a giant celestial raven—or an angel in the form of a raven— delivered teh Holy Symbol of Ravenkind to Lugdana so she could use it to root out a nest of vampires. The Holy Symbol of Ravenkind...now that's a relic I haven't heard anything about in a long time. From what I understand, it predates any religion in the valley. That might actually make sense as to why she won't come with us.
Turning to Ismark, Weiryn continues, The symbol must be bonded to its wielder through a special ritual in order for its powers to be accessed, burgomaster...and, no offense intended, but a holy symbol of any kind requires faith in order for one to exert power through it.
He thinks for a moment. If we can get your sister to come here, and you will allow Darren and I to perform a funeral service to lay these poor souls to rest, I will see what can be done to unlock the symbol's potential for you and your sister once again. Bringing your sister to safety, however, is a requirement for me to do so.

Ismark looks at you, amazed you know so much more than him about an heirloom he's seen his whole life... "I... I did not know that. This would explain why it refused to work for me and my sister... Father never told us. but wait, when did father..."
He furrows his brows in thought for a moment and then comes back to you.
"You seem knowledgeable, and I cannot deny that you are a capable lot when you dispatched these undeads. Perhaps, if you figure out how to bond the object, you should use it. If you are here, it's only a matter of time before Strahd learns of your presence, and trust me, he will. You will probably end up needing it more than we do... Do your funeral service, although I doubt you'll convince my sister to leave, not as long as this plague menaces us all at least."

"I too have heard of this powerful artifact. It is said an angel in raven form bestowed it upon a paladin named Lugdana so she could use it to root out a nest of vampires. To this day, vampires have a powerful loathing for the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind and all it represents. We must attempt to wield it and end the curse upon this place. It is our sworn duty to suffer no false life."
Aug 4, 2016 1:33 am
Ismark is even more surprised. "Re... really? This would certainly explain why Strahd recoiled from the symbol the way he did... Who are you people to know so much about the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind?"
Aug 4, 2016 1:40 am
"We are the Lightbringers." Ujjaya replies, bowing. ""We have sworn to stamp out all undead from this world. To suffer no false life."

Impressed that the monk knows a bit more than he, Weiryn nods. "As for myself, I have spent the majority of my life studying the arcane and divine arts in the hopes that I can discover a "cure" for the undead scourge that plagues this world, thus bringing balance to the cycle of life and death in the name of my patron goddess Pharasma. Artifacts such as the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind, which are legendary in their powers that their wielders can unleash against the undead, are of great interest to me."
Aug 4, 2016 3:39 am
Ismark says. "A cure to undeath eh? Well, wouldn't that be something... Well, that would still leave the werewolves, but, that would be a start..."
Aug 4, 2016 6:00 am
Ujjaya's eyes go wide at the mention of lycanthropes. It takes a supreme effort not to grab Ismark's arm. The monk steadies his breathing before saying, "Werewolves? Burgomaster, pray tell where I might find such creatures. I am on a search for a man who hunted such things but has gone missing. I fear the hunter may have become the prey. His name is Maugren. Perhaps you have met him?"
Aug 4, 2016 2:39 pm
Ismark thinks for a moment... "Maurgen... Maurgen... I do not think I or my father have ever met anyone by that name." He turns to the barkeep. "How about you Arik? The name Maurgen rings any bells?"
The barkeep answers while cleaning a glass. "No, no such individuals came here. But if he came here to hunt werewolves, he might have met with our resident werewolf hunter Janis Barahg. Janis was out of town on a hunt when the plague began, and we haven't seen him since. I guess he had enough good sense to stay away from the village when he saw undeads roaming the streets..."
Ismark then turns to you. "Hmm, this is odd indeed, most visitors, well, the few we get, stop here when they reach Barovia. If you want to meet werewolves, well, all you need to do is go deep into the Svalich Woods. It doesn't really matter which direction you pick, the foul beasts will find you soon enough..."
