Naatkinson says:
What's the policy on buying healing potions, because I still have a lot of money after making my purchases.
I'm interested in this, too.

Meanwhile, my equipment is as follows:

Are you imposing encumbrance rules by the book (Heavily Encumbered = speed drops by 20 feet and disadvantage on ability checks attack rolls, and saving throws that use STR, DEX, or CON.)?
Yes, we are using the Encumbrance variant rule as per page 176. However, you don't have to count every coin towards this. If you are generally carrying in the range of 5 to 10 times your strength score, you will move slower both in combat and exploration. If you are carrying roughly above 10 times your strength score, you will be barely moving and have disadvantage as per p. 176. But if you are a few pounds over? I'm not worried about that.

Also, you did say this would be about survival with limited resources. Should I start with fewer rations (or none at all)? Am trying to imagine the pack Jarveena would have grabbed before abandoning ship.
Good question. The standard 10 days of rations would be a good maximum for players to adhere to.

Potions are a form of magic and therefore not available as starting equipment. Healers kits are the best you can hope for if anyone is proficient. Otherwise it's hit dice (which account for bandaging and disinfecting) and long rests, although you never know what you might find on a mysterious island.

All metal weapons and armor from the PHB are considered to be bronze in Primeval Thule. Weapons made of iron and steel are a cut above (pardon the pun) and will have the properties of a +1 weapon or armor (although cannot overcome magical resistances) and cannot be purchased as starting equipment. They are likely storied items with a long history, dating back to the days of Atlantis before the secret of steel was lost to man. They might also be Dwarven-crafted, and would therefore be covered in appropriate runes.

I'm pretty sure that Captain Gabranth would have been carrying steel, she seems bad-ass enough to have such an item. (plot hook #1!)

Kill Jarveena so I can take the Captain's superior steel sword, got it.

On a serious note, would it be too meta-gamey to drop a background language and pick up proficiency in a healer's kit and purchase one?

Paring down Jarveena's gear, I'm down to 52lbs (5x her STR is 40lbs).

Mechanically, what happens when you don't have a bedroll? Does sleeping on the ground incur any penalties?

HypCo: Sure, that's fine. My take on metagaming is that if you can justify it in character then it's fine. Having a medical background might be an interesting dimension to add to a character.

Jabes, this is up to you, but consider that you will be able to redistribute gear to stronger allies after the crash, so if you are lagging a bit of extra weight at first, it won't be a big deal. - 10 speed won't play out too terribly in theatre of the mind. Perhaps you can have a separate sack of 20 lbs.of things you grabbed on your way overboard that you can drop and pick up as needed, and later give to a stronger ally.

Mechanically I don't know of any downside to sleeping outside of a bedroll however.

Okay for healer's kit, is the proficiency homeruled? The PHB just states it has ten uses and as an action I can expend 1 use to stabilize a creature who has 0 hit points to skip the Wis (medicine) check. Were you thinking of something else?

HypCo: Oh, you're right. Not in front of my PHB right now, but that is probably the Healer feat which would take a lot more character restructuring that swapping out a language. My bad.
Feb 28, 2017 6:58 am
Sharing the load: that's a good point, Len! Jarveena would be loathe to rely on anyone but we'll see if she will learn to trust other people.

Capt. Gabranth's steel: this will be interesting to see, because I've established that Jarveena isn't good with swords, but I don't see her deciding to take Leatha's rapier when she washes up dead on the shore either. Yet if anyone else were to try and take it I imagine Jarveena wouldn't like that either. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.
Feb 28, 2017 6:59 am
No worries, you are correct the Healer Feat allows you to heal with the Healer's Kit (still no proficiency).

I think I'll still pick up the healer's kit, makes sense for a soldier to have one.

Previous: 179 gp spent - 76 lbs. - 71 gp left

Case, map: +1 gp, +1 lbs., -1 gp
Healer's Kit: +5 gp, +3 lbs., -5 gp
Signet Ring: +5 gp, +- lbs., -5 gp
Pan Flute: +12 gp, +2 lbs., -12 gp
Removing 4 rations: -2 gp, -8 lbs., +2 gp

After: 200 gp spent - 74 lbs. - 50 gp left
(75 lbs with gp weight)

Also, crossbows are okay. It's probably a knock-off of a more sophisticated but lost Atlantean designs, primitive in construction and materials by comparison.

For that matter, I'm not sure if a rapier is possible without steel, but at some point you just gotta let it go and enjoy the game.

I don't think my character has been approved yet. By the way, did you want us to expand on the brief backstories that we gave for applications, or just develop them in-game?

All characters have been approved now. Developing your backstories in-game is totally fine.

FYI, switched out Elspa's longsword for a battleaxe. Felt it matched the bronze-age theme better.
