Thorn
BR14

Hit against mass hanging on tree.
OOC:
X, we'll have to read back through some of the rules. I don't think that you get to include the doubling of extra damage from maneuvers onto the doubling of damage for Critical Hits. I think the Critical applies to only the base weapon damage. Also not sure if GWF gets to reroll 1s on Battle Master Maneuver damage or not.
For this iteration, I'm recording all of the damage in full as you have reported it; and it will stand. For the future, a similar situation may go another way if the rules suggest otherwise. We'll revisit and discuss in the crowd if necessary.
Thorn's heavy sword slides down through the length of the crust-covered gray mass of grotesque fleshy tissue. Like a cleaver splitting through grizzled raw meat, the sword splits the bulk of the mass from top to bottom, nearly a 5' stretch, expertly dragging very lightly along the edge of the old tree bark behind.

Icky gore, like infested pus, pours to the ground from the wound. The slice also cuts partially through one of the retracted tentacles in the middle of the large mass. The wounded tentacle bursts forth in a thrust, but in full extension it is split along its length the entire way. The two split tentacle lengths pour down, flop and wriggle briefly, then fall inert.

Another fleshy tentacle-like tube burst forth from another site on the flesh mass, to the right of the slash wound. This disgusting extremity extends to a length of about 4 feet and writhes wildly back and forth in the air.

The sight of this unnatural gore is sickening. After lunging forward for the maneuver, with a shove of his lead leg Thorn shifts back to the position from which he launched outward. As he glides backwards away from the tree, a puff of gas sprays out from a vent-like pore that opens on the crusty skin of the horrid flesh mass.

By narrow timing, Thorn withdraws from the spacing that is engulfed in a full cloud of gray-green dust. He is however close to the periphery of the expanding cloud. He cannot completely avoid breathing it in.

Wretched Mass's Reaction Defensive Measure triggered. Thorn must make CON save attempt. Result will determine extent of effects.
Because of Lunge Maneuver follow through that pulls Thorn back from 5' adjacent to 10' spacing, DM circumstance bonus granted.
CON Save should be made at Advantage.

When Thorn's sword splits through the mass of wretched flesh, the masked phantom heaves in pain as he is trying to get up. His back arcs and his head throws back. His arms extend wide and lock out, still holding his blades, but forearms facing up in an unnatural position of pain response.

After this initial jolt, the masked man swoons and careens back and forth, disoriented on his knees, his head now tilted forward, shifting and jerking about.

Final positioning places Thorn 10' back from the tree.
Phantom is on his knees, in the seeming state of shock, 5' to the side of Thorn.
Maeriks is also Prone, also trying to get up, adjacent to the Phantom.
OOC:
X, send that CON Save. That will end out BR14.
With that, we'll see how the shift to R15 will be set up.

OOC:
according to sage advice, all damage dice ( including paladin smite, fighter superiority and rogue sneak attack) are doubled. And the reroll on Gwf is only weapon damage dice.
May 28, 2017 11:45 am
OOC:
Regarding doubling damage dice from maneuvers (superiority dice):

PHB p.196 - "When you score a critical hit, you get to roll extra dice for the attack's damage against the target. Roll all of the attack's damage dice twice and add them together. Then add any relevant modifiers as normal . . . If the attack involves other damage dice, such as from the rogue's Sneak Attack, feature, you roll those dice twice as well."

I take this to mean superiority dice, as well.

Regarding rerolling 1's and 2's for the superiority dice:

PHB p.72 "When you roll a 1 or 2 on a damage die for an attack you make with a melee weapon that you are wielding with two hands..."

My interpretation here is that superiority dice are damage dice, but looking around on the internet I can see there are some differing interpretations! I realize you're already letting us double the bonuses, and am perfectly fine to modify the damage Thorn did here if that's what you prefer, J. As long as we're all on the same page going forward, I'm good.

Thorn
BR14 (cont'd)

Save against gas successful to avoid more lethal effects. Despite save, one enduring effect is 1 round of Poisoned Condition.
This Condition will always remain 1 round after a victim moves out of the cloud area.
At 10' radius, Thorn is within the cloud area initially. Note that the cloud area seems to be expanding outward.

Thorn turns his head away from the bulk of the gas, only gasping in a bit of it. Still he begins to cough uncontrollably. His eyes are watering.

Phantom
TR15

The wrapped and masked man still stuggles and cannot seem to get his bearings. His head low is again thrown back and locks upward. Though still armed, his hands and arms are shaking. He is still on his knees, never having been able yet to fully stand.

Phantom has Prone Condition and Stunned Condition.
He is 15' from the tree and flesh mass.

The poisonous gas continues to spew and roll forth from the flesh mass. The cloud begins to overtake a wider and wider area centered on the old dead tree.

The border of the gas begins to cover the Phantom and is gradually radiating outward.

Big Maeriks
BR15

The simpleton's eyes are wide. He has a look of confusion as he rolls over slowly from the ground, initially sitting on his rump to assess the scene after his bull rush against Phantom.

Before he can get up, his eyes lock onto the horror of chopped flesh mass on the old tree.
He sees Thorn pull back from the lunge attack and begin coughing.
He looks immediately beside him to see his opponent the Phantom locked and twitching in pain.
And then he sees the rolling cloud of poison expanding towards him. Maeriks knows that that gas is killer gas.

He acts as best as he can with the smartest thing he can think of.

With a big roll and heave, he shifts his body weight over swiftly. As he does, he shoves with all all the strength in his right arm into the Phantom. Maerik's big meathook hand catches the costumed man under the arm pit. The Phantom is thrown roughly to the side, crumpling down on his side in a heap further away.

Maeriks continues the momentum of his roll and puts his hands on the ground, belly facing down. As fast as he can he low crawls, elbow over elbow, dragging himself forward anyway he can to escape the gas.

Bottom of Round 15 Open

...to Ivor, Kray, Thorn.

Thorn is in the expanding puff area of gas. He is a 5' adjacent to Phantom who just fell at his feet from the Maeriks Shove.

Maeriks is crawling away with Movement while Prone.

At the beginning of Round 15, so that means before movement, Ivor is 90 feet away from the edge of the growing gas cloud.

At the beginning of Round 15, again before all Actions, Kray is 140 feet away from the edge of the growing gas cloud.

For Kray and Ivor, no targets are yet clear for Range attacks, though that could change after Movement (that is unknown).

Neither Kray nor Ivor can yet see any figures of men, given all of the underbrush. But they do now begin to see the gray-green gas through the trees. It is gathering up in a ground level cloud, apparently around the base of the old dead tree though details are not exactly clear in the first seconds.

Nice one X. Couldn't have gotten better timing for that crit, cutting open the Demon Tree like that... whatever it is. Remember comic books and graphic novels? That moment would get an entire page for the art, Thorn knocking on heaven's door and dealing a blow like that.

Thrilled Maeriks showed up... wonder if he came out here on his own accord or the Old Man is out here, too. Either way, give that guy a gold star.

Damn that tree... we should burn this island down. Wetlands, so hard to do. Maybe come back when the smoke clears and at least set fire to the tree itself. I'm curious as to what Rutcranna's opinion on that would be. No doubt Kray will make a suggestion to her.

Thorn lets out a wheezing cough, his eyes watering. He sees his strange opponent lying next to him, inert. It's time to leave. Time for one last stab, though.

He brings his sword, point first, down at the creature's head. Then, running, "Get up and run, Big Man. This way." He begins to move in the direction of the cabin, hoping Rutcrana succeeded in facing the Glaakieou alongside his comrades, whatever that meant.

Well... better timing might have been if Thorn could have managed it before Qiu & Talius said later-gator...
:(

Imbecile ex machina for the win. Hope he gets out of here okay.

All around, great stuff. Very interested to see what Rutcrana's up to with her little tripods.

Gray-green gas is never good.

Kray calls out. "Ivor! Keep your distance!" The cloud is unnatural looking enough that he assumes no more needs to be said. Gauging the cloud for its speed, he advances more carefully. Kray has seen enough today to know that whatever the sickening looking gas is, it can't be good.

Is Thorn in there? It seemed possible, even likely.

Raising his voice, he calls out, as loud as he can, hoping for a response. "Thorn!! We need to go!" His years as a decanus for the Mercon army kick in as Kray switches to operational language. "Regroup!" On the battlefield the meaning was clear: dispersed and separated troops should, if possible, come together as a stronger and more cohesive operational force.
May 28, 2017 3:41 pm
Heeding Kray's warning, and with no obvious threats save the suspicious-looking gas, Ivor slows his forward impetus and moves to join the Yuoric. "What the fuck is that? And where the fuck is everybody?"

"Qiu and Talius are dead." Kray was stoic, matter of fact. He'd seen enough to be absolutely certain of those words. "Right now we need to focus on the living." He scanned methodically, listening for any sign that Thorn was out there, all the while assessing the speed and threat of the putrid looking fog.

Not sure how expansive this poisonous cloud will get, but our best bet would be to regroup at the cabin and wait it out indoors. Rutcranna's there anyway, and she's the next link in our mission, definitely worth a conversation. If her ritual/spell(?) will weaken the masked enemies, the poison might kill them off anyway. In any case, at the cabin we'll be a unified force with Rutcranna's aid (I would assume).

Another less viable (imo) option is getting in our canoe(s) and escaping Old Island (hopefully outrunning the cloud, gators, and what not). I'm not a fan of that one. We lose Rutcranna (potentially) and it could be more dangerous than holding out in the cabin (gators, 200 year old giant Jaws gator). In sum I think it's a mission fail and more dangerous.

Getting to the cabin gets us Rutcranna and, I believe, safety from the poisonous cloud (I don't recall the place having windows, and skins/fabrics/blankets/etc could be used to seal out harmful vapors).

Perception roll for any needs J.

As Ivor and Kray slow up to assess further, they approach the gas cloud with more caution, now closer to one another.

To their surprise, they see Thorn burst out from the cloud, coughing violently but running.

Thorn runs past someone on the ground, but then stops to call back "Come on, Big Man. This way!"

Standing up slowly from the ground, shifting to one knee first and then pushing up from his own knee to lumber up, is Maeriks! The big dimwit from Driftwood is now here on Old Island!

After he gets up, Maeriks looks around. Sees Thorn and then stops, looking back to the cloud turning around. Then he looks back to Thorn. And then he looks to his right (to the East). And then back to Thorn. He seems torn, as if in indecision of where to go. He stands with his arms down to his sides, and then looks back at Thorn with a blank look.

Thorn keeps moving for a short ways longer, still hacking, but looks back. He also sees his friends further on (south for him). The group makes eye contact. They are about 20 yards apart from one another.

Then from the expanding gas cloud - the Phantom emerges.
He walks slowly. Standing tall and upright in his long wraps, slow measured steps, the smoke whisping around him.
His arms are down, he two blades still in his hands, held low and arching to his center and the ground before him.
The most shocking part of the image though is the Phantom's head. His mask is split and torn on his right side. The rough fabric of the mask is saturated with blood on the entire right side. Though the mask hides some of the details, he has a massive head wound on the right side of his face and skull. Some tissue can be seen protruding out from the mask. The center of the wound is partially collapsed.

Despite the devastating wound, the Phantom moves out of the gas cloud. Now he is closing in towards the closest target : Maeriks.

Maeriks turns around to look at Thorn, his eyes are wide with fear. He tries to run, but stumbles forward. He stays on his feet, but his slowness to move has him dangerously close to the killer behind him.

Distance, Ivor/Kray to Phantom: 80 feet
Distance, Thorn to Phantom: 25 feet
Distance, Thorn to Maeriks: 15 feet
Distance, Phantom to Maeriks: 10 feet

No net seen with Phantom.

Phantom approaches Maeriks as Ivor sprints forward enraged.
May 28, 2017 9:44 pm
Kray holds his ground, minding the poisonous cloud, and looses an arrow at Phantom. "Ivor! We need to go now!" His mind wonders about the brutish simpleton's glance toward the east. Was that their way out, where Maeriks had come from? Canoes on the shore? Surely Maeriks didn't swim all the way here.

Careful Jabes... I know you've got a ton of hp left, but that gas cloud is an unknown, still expanding, and Phantom just stepped out of it, meaning you're about to be in it. I imagine visibility will be shit in there, saving throws will be shit in there, Thorn and Kray are one hit away from dropped... Also, I've got to wonder if that gas doesn't somehow empower the masked Hivers. Phantom looks like he should be dead. Also, the ranges J gave mean Ivor can't get to Maeriks before Phantom does. Unless Phantom is that close to dead, this all adds up to horrible odds.

Not every fight is meant to be won, and not every foe is meant to be fought. I know that the usual D&D game gives a ton of room for error & easy heroics with soft, coddling DMs (boring), but clearly that is not the case in Dark Thrones.

Perhaps I'm misinterpreting the green mist, but this seems like one of those classic get the hell out of the danger zone scenes, like in the movies where they flee from the explosion that's about to happen.

J, would Maeriks' looking east be toward where our group had parked our canoes? If not, would going east be a closer shore than where our canoes are? Or is the distance negligible?

This island is starting to seem like the one in the first Predator movie, at the end, big explosion about to go off...
