ELSPA, JARVEENA, and RYGNAR
The three return to the cave. They make their way to the cathedral, where they see Auntie Zilla swinging a pole net around at a red-tinged glowing ball of light, not much bigger than a firefly.

"Come on, come here my sweet one, he he!"

With a swift stroke of her net she swipes the red ball of light and produces a small black sack. She loosens the drawstrings, and as the sack opens, you swear you can hear screaming at the edge of your hearing. She deposits the red light into her bag, and then draws it tightly closed.

She turns to see you three as you enter, her face a mess of wrinkles and boils.

"Ah, welcome back to Auntie's cave! Having an interesting night tonight? Feel free to make yourself at home, Auntie will be retiring in a moment."

In their exhaustion, the three heroes did not realize that a small crowd had gathered. More and more gather as the three accept their pendants. Seeing all three accept, the cave erupts in a cheer. An adorable young girl brings over leis and drapes it over each of you, giving you a little hug after. There is much applause, and you wonder at how this tribe has rebounded psychologically so quickly.

"You are part of the tribe now! Rest well, Heroes of Panitube!"

Opening his eyes, Moss sees flashes of his life.....
...Moss as a baby, crying in the woods, left almost dead by his mother, a prostitute who just didn't want to care for a sick kid. A old man steps out of the wood and takes him....
...Moss as a kid, used as a slave by the old hermit who saved him, getting a beating because he wasn't fast enough to obey. Underfed, he is forced to eat the moss growing on rocks since the hermit doesn't want to waste his food for him...
...Moss as a young adult, after another beating, kills the old hermit. Slicing his throat with a knife, he looks the hermit in the eyes as the life is fleeing from them, savoring each instant of it...
...always alone...you can trust no one...his heart is cold...dead...he doesn't need a heart....
...Moss sees himself now, surrounded by adventurers, they're starting to thrust him. People are cheering him...It...feels....good....
...Moss sees himself older, now some of the adventurers are his friends, he trusts them...likes them...for the first time in his life, he knows happiness...his heart is beating again...
...His friends, they are surrounding him, smiling....then everything goes dark...pain...in his chest...
...looking down, he sees a blade in his heart. There are many hands holding the blade...
...looking up, they are laughing at him, his "friends"... they are betraying him...hurting him...
...everything goes black again...alone...in pain...his heart died again.........

"Thank ya." The young boy whispered, his eyes wet with tears. The cut over his left eye was oozing a thin, crimson line. Ygne didn't reply to him. She was too busy taking everything from the unconscious kid that had put that cut on him. Ygne had been grateful for the distraction that let her sneak up on him; he was too strong, otherwise. "Hey, how old are ya?" The child asked, "Yer my age, right?" He persisted. "Well, ya saved me, ya did," the bleeding kid continued, stepping forward and placing a hand on Ygne's shoulder. Ygne was on him in an instant, her makeshift knife drawn and her fist grabbing a handful of the other kid's shirt.

Ygne gave a shout and hissed. The kid held his hands up, his eyes crossing to stare at the knife point.

"O-okay," was all the child could mutter before Ygne's fist rammed into his soft gut. The kid wheezed and fell over, giving Ygne the opportunity to look what belongings he had. "Didn' save ya," she muttered, "I used ya." After the deed, she stood up, and began to march out of the alleyway.

A cold chill crept up her spine as words were spoken behind her, "Kid had it coming." She turned to see Frick towering over her preadolescent form. His arms were crossed, and he was smirking. "Come on, lets go." He said, holding a hand out to take hers.

Ygne found herself raises her hand to take his, though she wasn't certain why. "Where are we going?" She asked, looking up at him.

"To the Lands of the Dead," He replied. A few steps deeper into the alleyway, Frick had led Ygne to the top of a cliff. Miles below, rapids gushed between a narrow, rocky ravine. Frick turned, putting his back to the cliff. "Catch me." He said.

Ygne replied with anger, "You told me you wouldn't die."

"I lied." Almost immediately, Frick disappeared as he vanished beyond the cliff's edge. Ygne felt ill, as though she may retch.

"Fuck you!" She screamed with clenched fists. Her small voice broke and sounded shrill, "Fuck you!" Her throat felt tight, and she could feel the tears pushing against the backs of her eyes.

"Ygne!" She heard someone scream, "Ygne, le's go, dammit!" Ygne turned to see Jarveena standing beside her, firing arrows into an innumerable horde of masked ancestors. The land around her was a battlefield, littered with wide-eyed corpses. Ygne swung her makeshift knife, but the blade broke upon the ancestor's armor. As the foe was about to retaliate, something blocked the blow. Ygne looked upward to see Rygnar standing in front of her, a blade's point poking out of the muscle of his back. Rygnar collapsed backward, landing on top of her, trapping her beneath his weight.

"No!" She screamed, watching Elspa join the fray beside Jarveena. "No! Run! Don't die!" She shouted once more. She turned to see Moss, leaning calmly against an alley wall. He was watching her. "Help them!" She screamed, feeling her cheeks go wet. "Help them, Moss!"

The rogue's eyes went cold as he stared at Ygne and spoke, "We all die alone."

Ygne squeezed her eyes shut and screamed again, "Stop! Stop it! The noise of the fight seem to die down, and Ygne's eyes reopen. She finds herself staring face to face with Ryte, standing just the two of them in an otherwise empty void of darkness. A dozen jagged blades were stabbed into Ryte's body, and yet he stood.

"Ygne," he spoke. The thief could not stop crying, but neither could she divert her eyes. "I told you, Ygne. I relied on you." She shook her head, but her throat would not loosen enough for her to speak up. "Kid." Ryte said. "Just a kid.
I relied on you."
Again, and again.

"Stop," She insisted, "Stop talking to me."

"Just a kid."

"I relied on you."

"Stop it."

"Kid. Kid. Kid."

"Always a kid to me."

"Gods, stop it! Stop it! BE QUIET!" Ygne screamed.

And then, in the darkness of the void, she found herself suddenly and inexplicably alone, forever.

Frick moves like a blur through a crowd of enemies. His glaive sweeps back and forth, in and out, as the blood of his enemies washes over him.

Suddenly he hears a trio of screams. Looking ahead, he sees his parents and Ygne tied to a post, not too far away.

With grim determination and complete confidence, Frick moves again into battle, working his way toward his loved ones. As he closes in, he realizes that his movements have slowed and his enemies are no longer falling to his blows.

His a frustrated growl, he is carried further and further away from his goals. He screams for his family, but they can't hear him as they're gutted before his very eyes. His weakness grows and he can only watch in horror as everyone he's ever cared for is murdered.

He screams helplessly. He doesn't fear death, doesn't fear pain, he fears being helpless. Being weak.

You awake the next day in the cave, the morning light filtering through the waterfall. Everything appears calm, most villagers are already up and about, and are freely entering and leaving the cave.

The Seventh stands at the entrance beside She Who Has Been Beyond the Reef, his arms folded across his massive chest. His expression is hidden beneath his skull mask.

An old woman approaches you as your rouse. You recognize her as the stern woman who chased you away from the mead brewery in the cooking hut. She speaks in her language, but you understand her words as if they were Low Atlantean.

"Brave Heroes from Afar, I'm afraid the mead distillery was blown up in the attack. Pirates!"

She spits on the ground at their mention, and then smiles mischievously at you.

"But, I do have a secret stash to help you wake up this morning."

She hands each of you glass flasks of strong, smooth rum and a wooden bowl rice porridge with chunks of fish in it.

Elspa had furled the map before they approached the cave, and with wordless thanks to Auntie Zilla she settles in for the night.

Rygnar makes no effort to relax, he instead stands and keeps watch over Jarveena and Elspa to insure their safety.

Once he's finished eating, Moss speaks to Ygne and Frick... I'm leaving to see if Elspa and the mountain of muscle are still alive, if you want to come, meet me at the entrance of the waterfall in 15 minutes. Then he goes to prepare himself.

Ygne doesn't wake with a start. Rather, she slowly opens her eyes, and takes in a slow breath. Her body ached. Her head pounded. Her back was the most painful of all, and she spent a moment trying to stretch without disturbing those villagers that were sleeping around her. As much as she is not in the mood to accept gifts from anyone, she is more eager to eat, and to slake her thirst. She accepts them with a half-hearted smile, and begins to dig in. Ygne largely ignores Moss, but also doesn't curse him as she usually does. Instead she focuses her attention on her porridge, having no intention of going down to the beach.

In the meantime, Elspa ad Jarveena's minds darken with nightmares

In the near-darkness Rygnar realizes that among the pictographs on the wall, one is faintly growing red. It appears to be of a smaller figure with 2 swords fighting a larger one with 1 big sword. By morning, the glow has completely faded away. Rygnar is still sharp, the adrenaline from his wounds acting as an antidote for fatigue.

The riverbed was dry, cracked, and parched, much like Elspa's lips. She jogged along the dusty bank, her blistered hands still clutching the javelins needed to bring down the large elk she had been harrying for over two days. Soon the beast will be tired and easy to finish off. She could feel her own hot breath quicken as she tracked the creature, and her sweat evaporated with the heavy musk of travel.

The elk was resting in the distance. Waves of heat shimmered its outline, casting a million reflections of itself across the horizon. Elspa slowed her pace in order to watch the beast; she knew it wasn't ready to give up. She remained where she stood, watching the creature with eager interest, knowing that its time was near.

The riverbed was dry, cracked, and parched, much like Elspa's lips. She ran along the dusty bank, her blistered hands holding a single javelin; the only thing she had to bring down a large elk she had been harrying for over two days. The beast seemed to not tire and was difficult to finish off. She could feel her own hot breath quivering as she chased the creature, her sweat long evaporated with the strenuous travel.

She found the elk, resting in the distance. Waves of heat shimmered its outline, casting a million reflections of itself across the horizon. Elspa could not slow her pace; she knew it was now or never and could not give up. The elk remained where it rested, watching the approaching barbarian with eager interest, knowing that it still had time.

The riverbed was dry, cracked, and parched, much like Elspa's lips. She tumbled along the dusty bank, blistered hands scrambling for purchase along the slope; she had nothing left to defend herself against the pack that had been harrying her for over two days. Soon she will be tired and easy to finish off. She could feel their hot breath as they tracked her, their noses quick to catch onto her musky scent.

She could see them in the distance. Waves of heat shimmered each of their outlines, casting a million of their own reflections across the horizon. Elspa's knees buckled and she lost her footing; she knew her strength had begun to sap, as if her very body had given up. The pack remained where they stood, watching her with eager interest, knowing that her time was near.

A blood moon. Torches. Hooded figures. Men, some women. Rough voices, rougher hands. They loom over Jarveena and their hoods fall open as they burn her flesh and crush her limbs. The faces under the hoods shock her to her core: Friends. Family. Her parents, both natural and adoptive. Her lover, Jean Reinhardt.

But those faces are masks. Her torturers tear those faces away to reveal Leatha and the crew. Now they are tying Jarveena up on the deck of the Sea Witch and tossing her overboard. A rope is pulled taut, and she is keel-hauled, bumping and scraping underneath the ship's hull, and drowning, and drowning, and drowning.

Jarveena struggles to the water's surface and finds herself in the ravine, with the seven Ancestors standing over her, staring down at her through their blank masks. Then, in unison, they reach for the masks and toss them into the water, revealing grotesque reptilian faces, but their eyes are disturbingly familiar. The stink is unbearable, making Jarveena retch, and begin to drown in her own vomit. The troglodyte ancestors fall upon her like ravenous lions devouring their prey. As they feast upon her flesh, the monstrous visages fall away yet again to reveal faces to match the familiar eys: Elspa. Rygnar. Moss. Ygne. Frick. Ryte. And Jarveena — Jarveena at seventeen unmarred, unscarred. The apparition sings with the voice of a goddess, and her delicate fingers are like those of a demon rending flesh, crushing bone. And oh, could she dance! The seven all dance under the blood moon while Jarveena lies broken and dying.

Frick wakes covered in a cold sweat, but very carefully doesn't leap to his feet. He takes a deep breath and stands tall, stretching his muscles to make sure he's recovering properly. With a satisfied nod, he turns to look at the old woman as he approaches.

He smiles widely and mutters his thanks before digging into the food and drinking the rum quickly. Nothing like good food and alcohol to aid in healing! He belches loudly as he finishes his breakfast and turns to Ygne, "Wanna go with Moss?"

FRICK, MOSS, and YGNE
A small band of children have gathered around Frick and Ygne, curiously watching from a distance. Some of the boys are gossiping about Frick:

"They call him the Killer of Shit That Needs Killing!" says one boy. "He is so badass. Did you see his weapon? He took on the Ancestors! Like, 6 on 1 at one point. I saw it! I think he could challenge The Seventh!"

Another group whisper about Moss:

"The Healer? yeah he just got up and left. He's definitely the scariest of them all. Did you see his eyes? And when he fights, he just disappears in the dark. I don't think he is a man. No, a demon maybe. But still, he dived into the ravine to save his friends ..."

A group of girls gossips about Ygne:

"Killer of Lizards, Saver of Kings! Did you see how she saved the Killer of Shit That Needs Killing? Do you think they kissed after? She sounds just like a heroine out of the stories ... Oh!"

They suddenly realize that the two of you can hear them and freeze.
In the meantime, Moss makes his way into the village. As he passes Khiva and The Seventh, the huge man pushes out a massive fist to bar Moss's path. His face is concealed by the skull mask, but you can tell he is not smiling in the least.

"The Healer, your group performed adequately during last night's attack. Enough so that I will offer you a reprieve for your part in the disaster."

The huge fist opens to reveal the fiery amulet that you delivered for Auntie Zilla.

"However, if you bring any artifact into this village, you will first bring it to myself or She Who Has Been Beyond the Reef. Or the new Spirit Mother when she arrives."

The fists closes again, tightly.

"Do you swear to obey this instruction?"

ELSPA, JARVEENA, and RYGNAR
Elspa and Jarveena awake to the light pouring in from the opening in the cathedral's ceiling to see Rygnar and the pictographs still watching over them. Sounds of jungle birds and rolling surf filter in from the distance, but are not enough to drown out the rumbling of your empty stomachs. The strong briny rotting smell coming from Auntie Zilla's room does at least dull your appetite some.
