SPLASH

Okay so you’re all agreed. You shouldn’t have moved that plinth.

Everyone comes to First Find for their initial venture out here in the Reach. It was where the Prospector found the first of the raised temples and the cache of treasures underneath. It’s easily been cleared out by two or three groups before you, but it’s the best place to get an idea of what you’re looking for when you go out on your own. Seeing as you’ve all just arrived in this part of the world, you all met up over drinks in the Devil’s Hall or on the way up to the First Find and decided to get acquainted with the area together.

As expected, there was nothing much. Everything aside from the heaviest masonry has been picked clean. Rumours would put this as one of the region's great pillar temples that soared high into the clouds, but this place is barely a story above the ground, shorter even than the Noodle.

Still, somehow you got it into your heads that maybe there was something more to it. While exploring what must have been the great antechamber of the temple one of you shifted the central dais that was quite obviously out of position, and something below it… clicked.

That’s about the time the floor gave way and before you knew what happened, the group of you were falling down a paved funnel that gave way to broken terrain and a rough, bumpy fall into the darkness, followed by a very cold dive into fresh and mercifully clean water below. Everyone’s fine; you all landed in a deep pool underground, and have all your equipment on you, all be it a little knocked around. But it’s cold, and dark down here. There’s light coming in from the tall hole in the ceiling you’ve made tumbling through above which is otherwise dotted with stalactites that are far out of reach. Beast and some of you have found your way to a shoreline that feels like cold ash to the touch. The cavern you’re in is vast, and stretches into the darkness around you. You can hear echoes in the distance from your fall

You're cold, and quite deep below the earth's surface with no immediately easy way back up. So what now?
OOC:
Throwing you in at the deep end. Literally. This adventures a feeler for us getting to grips with the systems. Ask questions, be curious!

"That was not fun." Florian groans and shakily rises to his feet. "Well all my bones seem to be where they belong. Everyone else all right?" Florian asks but does not wait for an answer. He rummages in his pack and is relieved to find his torches still dry. Taking out flint and steel he lights the torch and begins to take a look around. "Big place wherever we are. Wonder how far it goes?"
OOC:
OK to make a Discern Realities roll or do I need to poke around more?

OOC:
You can give me a roll after the description from you lighting the torch if you want to pick about the scene with
Florian lights the torch and it's clear you're in a vast subterranean cave, and scattered around are patches of recently made debris similar to the ruined temple's architecture above you. Water is dripping in from the stalactites above. At the far side of the scree beach to you, you can see the cave network continues onwards out of sight down a tight looking side passage, albeit obstructed by a rather substantial looking boulder.
Oct 5, 2017 3:45 pm
"Are you sure you want to take the lead, Florian? That usually doesn’t end well for you." I stroke the fur on Beast’s back and we continue forward, away from the cold water.

"It takes more than that to break one of the Empire's best," Lucas boasts as he gets up from the ground, the slight groan as he stretches his limbs hints that it might not take much more.

He hears Xadra speak and follows up with: "Yes let the lady lead, her elven eyes are probably used to skulking in the dark."

"Well Xadra, if you find somewhere to lead us into, I'll happily step aside." Florian walks toward the side passage and the blocking boulder. "Until then, the more eyes searching the better, eh?" Once he gets there, Florian starts looking about for some way to get by or otherwise continue on.

OOC: The joy of having a low wisdom is not knowing you have a low wisdom. :) I'll choose What here is not what it appears to be? as my question.

Rolls

Discern Realities - (2d6-1)

(35) - 1 = 7

So it's obvious that the earthquake must have shaken up the geography around here; that funnel you fell through would have led to another part of the temple; a holding cel, a deathtrap... not this place. The geography here will likely criss-cross between the cavern and the temple complex.

Something is stirring beneath the water though. It splashes away from the light as you illuminate the pool. Seems that you're not the only living things in this cave.

"Tezoc will lead." the large man states, his deep voice rumbling through the cavern in a tone that brooks no argument. He strides toward the tunnels, grabs the boulder that is blocking the way, and heaves.

Oops! Forgot to add STR modifier.

Rolls

Herculean STR roll - (1d6+1, 1d8)

1d6+1 : (5) + 1 = 6

1d8 : (1) = 1

Florian stuttered a few steps backward as the thing in the pool splashed off. "Looks like the pool's not empty, comrades." He warns. Florian watches Tezoc incredulously as he heaves at the boulder.

OOC:
Sure. We can go with that as a Defy for strength. Herculean complication incoming for a lower d8 than d6 and then your ugly choice for a 7-9
Tezoc yanks the boulder sharply and with a fluid motion, rips the giant rock from it's resting place. He gives out a great, mighty roar that echoes throughout the cave, disturbing a colony of bats living in the stalactites that flutter towards the hole in the ceiling.

The rock can be shifted, but now that it's been unbalanced Tezoc's finding himself right in the path where it'd roll if he let it go right now. It looks like it could be rolled carefully and dropped straight into the pool if he took the time and put his back into it, or he could let it go and risk himself and anyone immediately behind him getting caught in the rockslide.

Meanwhile something stirs beneath the surface of the pool.

OOC:
What if I carefully dropped the boulder on the thing in the water?
Oct 8, 2017 6:37 pm
OOC:
I figure that's also covered by the former option, and something I totally endorse.
Oct 8, 2017 7:08 pm
His great muscles bulging with the strain, Tezoc carefully rolls the boulder and drops it into the pool on top of the unknown thing stirring in the water.
Oct 8, 2017 10:28 pm
OOC:
So what's everyone else up to while Tezoc tries to shove the rock onto whatever's below the water surface?
Oct 9, 2017 3:42 am
I hush everyone as I listen for any other surprises. Even the slightest echos can hint at something approaching, or lurking in the distance.

"Let's not wait around to find out what it is. Keep moving. Tezoc, you take the lead and I will guide us from behind. If anything surprises us I will shoot it."
OOC:
Questions- What is about to happen? What should I be on the lookout for? What here is useful or valuable to me?

Rolls

Discern Realities - (2d6+2)

(26) + 2 = 10

Tezoc's moving towards the edge of the pool, pushing the boulder right to the lip of it. Beneath the surface of the water, glittering in the little light you can shine there, are scales. Many, many scales. They're moving, down first out of sight but in a motion that looks like it's trying to build momentum for a lunge. It is large, reptilian and hungry.

The ground here looks slippery and unstable; shifting sand and pebbles. Tezoc's moved the big obstruction to the exit to the room, but there's still a scree slope leading up there and all it's going to take is a moment's distraction to risk a slip at the top of it and fall straight into the water.

While your eyes are on the water, you can see the bed of it is not just mud and grit, but some of the original temple architecture. This would be something worthy of study and sketches of them alone would get you some clout and interest with the scholars in Camptown; assuming you get back there alive.

OOC:
Do you need me to roll something right now?
Oct 9, 2017 10:46 pm
I wait to see if the others will continue moving away from the water. If they don’t, I will shake my head and say "So be it. I will fell this beast. You can stay and bear witness if you wish. Or join me, if you dare." I nock an arrow and wait for more movement before I release.

1d8 : (4) = 4

Florian keeps the torch aloft and backs away from the pool.
OOC:
Have I gotten a good enough look at the thing in the pool to use by Bardic Lore ability?
Oct 10, 2017 1:43 pm
Lucas moves close to the edge of the pool holding his sword ready. Should the creature come to the surface, Lucas is ready to pounce.
