I too hanker to role play a billion years in the future. I have never played Cypher System in PbP, but it seems like it would work really well.

I've been brushing up on the system as I haven't played for awhile, and I discovered the Cypher Speak podcast with the amazing Darcy Ross and Troy Pichelman. I found the Rules Primer episode and the Numenera 101 episodes to be good reminders of system and setting that I was able to consume during my commute.
This wiki post on Numenera terms was also helpful in reminding me of the rules in a concise manner.

I've made it through the CRB almost cover to cover. Will be reading up a bit on some of the ancillary material and working something together. Trying to listen to a combination of Styx and Pink Floyd during my commute as inspirational music to feel suitably Ninth World Weird.

Since I was focused originally on FFG Star Wars games, I thought this would be thematically appropriate. Where it's hideously inappropriate (e.g. Middle Earth) I've adopted a 'player' known as Falryx for the game where I use a different avatar. :)

Hey all,
I've put some thought into the character I want to play. Without defining too many details before falryx defines the parameters of the game, I thought it would be fun to play a Paladin-style character in the far flung fantasy future that is The Ninth World. Someone bound by oaths and dedicated to a cause.
Because each character is supposed to have a different Foci, I thought I'd just check if anyone else was interested in Absorbs Energy from Character Options 2? If not, I think that would match my character concept well.

Cool. I was going down the Works Miracles path for the "Paladin" flavor, but I'm glad I didn't now that you mention you're interested in it :)

Sounds cool, although it's suggested everyone have different foci. There's still allowance in the system for say two people playing twins to have the same descriptor, type, and foci and still be different due to class moves, stat pools, and options taken.

I joined two Numenera games on the site, and both of those games died early deaths. If I manage to get into this one brewing here I will probably use the same character:

I'm kinda hoping the MCG eventually gets my order to me (it's been over a month). There's a lot of PDF material that I'd like to get ahold of as inputs into this. That said, I've got a bunch going on at work at the moment, so it'll be a little bit yet before I pull it all together.

Noticed we had seven. If we get more did you want to split it Falryx? I should probably GM more games in truth myself... If you were going to play Falryx which system would you want to play in since you're currently GMing this makes what the 4th?

I can probably manage 5-6 players -- so I think we're ok without having to split -- but if folks would rather try and pull two 4-person parties together I won't argue with that! There are a couple options I'm entertaining -- one of which is working through elements of the Jade Colossus. Any of you folks have any experience with that supplement? I don't think we'll start out there, but it gives me some framework around where I'd like to start and some impetus to travel.

Well if everyone just plays you'd have 6 I believe (Unsure if you wanted to play though since you rarely get the chance it seems). My Face to Face weekly GM enjoys the book since it gives you a lot options (tables) to come up with things that you can string together that work well together.

Yah -- the book has a system/engine for creating ruins which should be quite helpful to any GM -- I'll use that regardless. The key question is whether or not I use some or all of the rest of the content. More reading to be done by me.

Nah, it's cool. No pressure. Lenpelletier started with the paladin that Absorbs Energy, and people just kept piling on.

It is an interest thread but since Falryx was busy we have possibly 8 players for a game. Mostly since we have a bit of free time until it starts just seeing what everyone was thinking of playing and maybe get some of the connections done. Like do we all know each other. Does no one let my character drink since he always ends up someplace crying and losses his pants? Tehcnically I guess this is more char gen but seeing it outside a private game thread might get other people wanting to try the system.

@ HypCo No worries I think the systems pretty easy to pick up. There's always listening to Actual Plays to grock new systems also.

Please feel free to coordinate amongst yourselves as much as you like! My focus is on building a reasonable string of potential encounters together to have a campaign of sorts. I'll steal from some of the published material and add some of my own stuff -- and reinterpret the history of the 9th world a little. Having you guys work amongst yourselves to define potential characters and relationships is awesome stuff that I will happily draw upon when I work with you guys!
I've not made the game yet here since I haven't figured out a great name (this seems like the hardest part!) but if you'd prefer for me to get that up and together so you have a place to post a bunch, we can do that.
Also note that if we're at 7 players, I can make that work.

Phil -- I've been poking around at the foci to see if they will influence what I put together for the campaign. Where does 'has no fear of dark places' come from so I can look it up and understand the context a bit better? I've poked around in what I have and haven't found it -- so I suspect it's from something I have but don't have indexed or something I should get! :)

I already have a backstory for OOLIN. But she could have wound up at the orphanage and met you guys there.
She has never had a name, only an alphanumeric designation/callsign. From what little she remembers from her time in the laboratories of the organization that made her what she is, they've only ever addressed her this way: N1700. It is etched onto the sole of her right foot. After she escaped, lost and alone, she has on occasion had to give her name to people she's met. "OOLIN". (which is N1700 read upside-down, of course!)
OOLIN wants to learn all she can about the numenera. She collects cyphers and implants - particularly those that augment her mind, though in order to survive in the world she's not above acquiring those that enhance her physically as well.
____ knows a few things that can help when OOLIN's implants malfunction.

What if said "orphanage" is running experiments on certain kids, maybe the ones that show more promise so not all are subject to the experimentation and most don't even know about it.

I kind of built a grown man for a PC but I guess it could be scaled to a young adult visiting if we go the small village where people know each other.

I talkin about our past and how we may have known eachother. We could have easily split after we grew up and left either the village or orphanage. Just a quick thought, no reason to have that be canon.
