Character Generation

This thread will be for character concepts and PC creation.

Hello all. I have an idea for a character that I've been stewing over for a while. Socially, he's a human aristocrat; the young and entirely disappointing scion of a wealthy merchant household. He has a very high option of himself, being highborn, but is functionally illiterate, a bit of an idiot, and prone to violent rages. Mechanically he's entirely a barbarian, though if you ask him, he'd tell you that he's a great and honorable nobleman and the finest hunter in all these lands. (spoiler: he's not)

I think I need to create the character myself. I won't ever learn to do it myself without being heavily involved so some help would be welcome. If you have something you can send me, please do so. I just want to have to download something new unless it's just a pdf file.

I'm seeing some things about changing most feats to be class features but I haven't seen that yet. The first feat I've always taken is Improved Initiative. In 5e that's called Alert. I'm told that Alert is not as valuable in 5e as II was in 3.5e. What I did see that I'm having some concern about is the feature called Arcane Tradition. At 8th level a wizard can be skilled in two schools. I haven't read enough in depth to understand if that means there are schools that cannot be used as was the case in 3.5e.

Hey all. Details yet to come, but I'm looking at playing a Devotion Paladin. Have been for a while, and since it's PHB only, seemed like a good choice.

Aldrusian, what do you need to get going? I'm sure you are familiar with the point-buy system, so we can start there with regard to stats. I know you are thinking sorcerer, so that's a start as well. As for HP, start with 6+CON, then 7d6+(7*CON) to get your total HP.

Alert is definitely a way to go for better initiative. There are two forms of human. The primary gets a +1 to each ability score. The alternate human gets +1 to two stats and gets a feat. Additionally, at 4th and 8th level you get the opportunity to raise a stat or get another feat. So, you have a couple of options. You can start with the primary human and get your feat later, or take it from 1st level on. That you be whatever you prefer.

That should get you started.

Since you are all at 8th level, I am looking at a way to let you get a magic item. Nothing disposable like scrolls and potions, as I will be providing things like that at the game start, unless you want something other than the typical healing and whatnot.

You all get 650 in starting gold, in addition to standard starting equipment.

I’ll probably play a rogue, both because it’s been a while since I last did, and because it looks like it’d fit the current party structure well. I’m in school at the moment but I’ll start work on the character when I get home.

Thanks Cato! For the rest of you, go ahead and send your HP rolls here. Build a shell of a PC and submit it so we can get PC's set. You can go back and revise them. Once all characters are finalized, we can think about beginning.

Not that I am not in any rush, let me know if you have questions or problems. Those in my other campaigns (Greyhawk Adventures or Princes of the Apocalypse) you are free to use DnD Beyond to generate your character. You will need to transfer it here, though, as I will be removing PCs from there once we start play (just so I don't get confused about what characters belong in that campaign)

What are the rules on that magic item? (And are we allowed to purchase others?) I'd be looking at a +1 Plate armour, but I wanna know what's available before I decide whether to do starting equipment or gold.

Yes, max HP at level 1, then roll for the other 7 levels. As for magic items, if you want to use some of your 650 GP to buy expendable magic, you can. I am going to work with each of you through PM to get you a permanent item. If you have an idea what you want, feel free to PM me with your request now and we can hash it out. I am thinking 1 or 2 items per person should suffice, but we will see as we go through the process.

If you have not yet submitted a PC (even if he/she is incomplete) go ahead and do so. That way I know what the party mix is going to be. You can update it as we work together to flesh them out.

OK, I've submitted my barbarian. My second ability increase I used to raise my con, so all of the bonuses on my HP roll should have been 4s, so I'm really up to 90 hp now.

And sans spells, now I think about it. Gonna do that now.
