Background: Tothis

Tothis is term for the process by which a toth (peasant or foreigner) becomes a Drenn (full citizen) of the nation of Burdoth. People who are in tothis are called tauther.

When a person decides to become tauther, he/she travels to the Burdothian capital, Ardoth, which is the largest, most cosmopolitan city on Jorune. Ardoth has about 5500 residents, though the population seems somewhat larger for all the traders, sailors, and day laborers flocking to the city each day. In Ardoth is the Hall of Drenn, where one applies to become tauther.

New tauther commit to act in the best interests of the realm of Burdoth and its peoples. The tauther are entered into the records by the clerks in the Hall of Drenn, and they are supplied with three additional items: a roll of parchment, a clay tablet, and a plate of buffed metal known as a challisk.
* The parchment bears the seal of Ardoth, names the bearer and identifies him/her as a tauther: the tauther is to carry this parchment and give it to patron Drenn who request it. Drenn who request the parchment will write their assessments, comments, and/or recommendations concerning the tauther's application on the parchment, accompanied by their personal mark, called a copra, which identifies which Drenn has provided these remarks. Tauther return periodically to turn in their parchment at the Hall of Drenn; the clerks will capture the deeds/comments in their records and transcribe the copra(s) of Drenn to the tauther's tablet.
* The tablet bears the name of the tauther and is hung in the Hall of Drenn. Interested Drenn can browse the tablets and request the records of any tauther by pulling the tablet and inquiring of the clerks. If the Drenn has a particular task in mind, he/she will notify the clerks, who will attempt to notify (using couriers) the tauther in question.
* The challisk is worn by the tauther. It is considered by many a badge of honor to bear a challisk. At the Hall of Drenn, a tauther's challisk will be inscribed with the copras of all the Drenn who have recommended the tauther for citizenship, allowing people to see the extent, success, and fame of one's tothis at a glance.

When tauther believe that they have earned enough copras, they return to the Hall of Drenn again, and declare their readiness for the trial. Their parchments, tablet, records, and challisk will all be reviewed in detail, and examiners ask detailed questions of the tauther and any witnesses present to speak on the applicant's behalf. The case will be reviewed by the council, and a decision passed down as to whether the applicant is accepted as Drenn, the applicant needs to gather more copras, or is outright rejected (though that third case is rare).

Each PC in this game has become tauther at some point in the past, and each has a tablet hanging in the Hall of Drenn, a roll of parchment and a challisk in their belongings. It's up to each why he/she is pursuing Drennship.
