The Whispering Vale OOC

Hey guys! Thanks for joining. Glad to have you. I’m going to give it a bit more time to see if we can nab a few more players.

Go ahead and start working on your characters. It seems like this site has a way for you to submit them to me? I’m also fine just making a character sheet thread for us to post them in as that’s how I normally do it on other sites.

Let me know what works best.

Just a reminder, roll 3d6 for stats, as per the book, but feel free to assign them as you see fit.

I absolutely adore how simple and clean the OD&D characters are. I’m so excited to run this game.

Hey, guys. I've heard that some have had a hard time submitting characters to the site. I've opened a character thread instead. Go ahead and post your characters here:

Looks like we’re just waiting on a few more characters to get posted to the thread and then we can get started. Thanks again for joining.

I think we just need Valdus’ character. So, I’ll get the first post up soon.

Cleric present and accounted, I decided to play straight from the roll.

Valdus says:
Cleric present and accounted, I decided to play straight from the roll.
That’s awesome. Doesn’t get more old-school than that.

To answer the question from the other thread, yes to RP. We’ll make rulings and create story based on what you guys are doing RP-wise.

Figured to move the RPing discussion over here. One of the reason for a more hack and slash with less rping back in the day is that the game was new and the idea of roleplaying was being learned. Many faced it more like a board game at first. Dungeons were highly deadly and to be overcome. This lent it self to create an atmosphere of kill them and take their stuff mentality. All the stuff for having RPing between NPCs and PC were there, but there was no to little guidance of how to do it. Most NPC were not named. For example in Keep on the Borderlands, As you enter the Keep the first person you run into is a guard that you need to sign in with. In most newer adventures he would be given a name and an attitude that he approaches the players with. In the module he is given a rank and combat stats and the rest was left to the DM.

In addition, many OD&D players, like me, came from the wargaming community, just like the TSR folks did. We were more used to number manipulation than character development. Since dungeons were so deadly as Viking1031 pointed out, characters often didn't last long so we didn't get too attached. I remember rolling for multiple characters in a single day for one DM's dungeon.

I, for one, welcome our new RP overlords.

Speaking of RP, my character, Celvin the Kind, has a Charisma of 3. His nickname is an ironic one. I'm playing him as a bitter, angry, "the world's against me" jerk. His is off-putting, but reliable.
