OOC:
This thread is for Taryn.
The lesson comes to a close and you all head off to perform your various chores and traing schedules. After a short while, Master Selak comes and finds you. He takes you deep into the caves and into the shuttle. There he takes a seat in front of the space chess board. He loads up the program and has you sit opposite him.

Meditate. He orders, simply.

Let's play a game. he doesn't take his eyes off of you but seems to move a piece purely at random.

That's exactly what it means but in this case, I simply forgot to delete it. The post is finished :)

As they approached the scuttled ship, Taryn wondered how if the Master flew the ship all the way here, which would have been an amazing feat of piloting skill, or if he 'cheated' and used the Force to simply pick it up and walked it all the way down here.

He was curious as to why they were here, but he didn't ask any questions.

At his Master's command he sat down crosslegged in front of the chess table, on the old leather couch.

He did his best to calm himself, to empty his mind of all his worries and questions.

And then he responded to Selak's odd opening with a defensive move, positioning his molitor to cover his left flank.
He liked the game, and could beat most of the others most of the time, he had never played the Master before.

Rolls

Taryn roll Force Rating 1, but won't use a Dark result.

1 Black Force Point

Taryn also likes to win the game and rolls Intellect.

1 Success, 4 Advantage

Total: 1 Success, 4 Advantage

You feel something cloud your mind. You find it impossible to concentrate and try as you might, you find it exhausiting and you quickly lose the game. However, you are certain that your master cheated!

What do you do?

Taryn looks up from the board. Given the earlier events of the day, he hadn't been expecting just a regular game.
He doesn't actually remember half of the moves he made. He has spent most of his effort in keeping his composure.

There was one moment, late in the game, the last possible moment he could have turned his defeat into victory, when he clearly felt his Master's presence in his mind, pressing down on him, diffusing his thoughts and strategies. At that moment he felt something coming to him, a way to even the playing field, to lash out at his Master with his frustrations and anger. But he didn't. He caught himself just in time, it felt... good, but in a very bad way, and recognised it for what it was and let it go. It's just a game...

"That's an... interesting technique you have there, Master. Two out of three?" he asks as he hits the reset button of the game board, and makes an agressive opening move.
Feb 27, 2019 3:50 am
Would you like to learn how I did that? Master Selak asks with a hint of pleasure creeping into his voice.

He resets the game and continues as if his question were rhetorical.

Meditate. Close your eyes. Good. Now reach out with the force. Feel it, pull it towards you. Extend your consciousness, see your thoughts. Look at me. See my thoughts... Now for the hard part. Pluck at my thoughts. Pick one and pull it apart. Then pick two. Pull them apart. Strand by strand.

Oh, we're feeling smug about ourselves? Taryn thinks to himself about the Master's one.

He concentrates on quieting his feelings. Listening to the Master's words he tries to connect with the Force.

What comes to him he experiences more like colours, all flowing over into each other in his mind, rather than strands.

A peaceful serenity comes over him, as well as a certain sense of whimsy. His thoughts reach out and draw some pink and some blue from Selak's mind, and moulds them into mild confusion and a sudden craving for a snack.

The game seems to be progressing well in your favour. Master Selak doesn't seem to show any signs of hunger, but his face looks strained.

Now you have two options
1. Continue your mind assault while moving randomly. This is what your master did to you in the previous game relying solely on his ability to influence your mind to win.
2. Play strategically and use the force to enhance your strategy. This option would be much easier, but it might defeat the purpose of the lesson somewhat.
OOC:
If you choose the first option make a normal force check.

If you choose the second option you can make 2 force checks and use either result.

* I strongly disagree that making random moves will win you the game as long as your opponent is distracted enough. I'm not sure you can win a chess-like game that way even if your opponent is dead.

* What I had been planning before your post was for Taryn to play to his strengths as a Shadow, opting for a deceptive strategy, carrying forward the 4 Advantages of the previous roll as Boost dice, while using Influence to put Selak in a state of mind that will render him more susceptible to deception. This sounds a lot like your option 2, but I don't see how it would defeat the purpose of the lesson.

OOC:
winning the game may be imporant to Taryn but its not important to Master Selak. For Master Selak he just wants you to learn how to use the influence technique.

We can restate your options if you like.

Option 1: Try and rely solely on your ability to influence Master Selak's mind to win the game. It will be harder but it will force you to use your influence skill more and thus develop it faster.

2 Use the influence skill in addition to your other strategies. This will be much easier, but you will learn at a slower pace.

Does that work for you?

My main issue is that the way I read the power, it shouldn't be possible to win the game solely through use of Influence. Not even a Jedi Master or Sith Lord who has completely upgraded and mastered the power should be able to use it this way, short of waving his hand and saying "You now want to move your queen to C5" or something like that. Or at least that's my interpretation of it.

Taryn overviews the game board. He doesn't remember several of his moves, but master Selak's side of the game doesn't seem to be any more coherent than his.
He breaths slowly, steadying his feelings. He gets the feeling the game is just there to serve as a distraction.

Closing his eyes, he tries to focus on Selak's state of mind.

He recoils from the darkness that well up from his own mind though, and lets go of his concentarion with a sigh.
[ooc: Taryn doesn't use the Dark Force Point]

I see. Well, I read the first passage allows you to inflict strain, which is effectively stress as I understand it. Its pretty difficult to concentrate when you're stressed out. If you get really, really stressed, it's difficult to think at all.

ooc: Dodging inflicts more strain than Influence. It's just a game resource.

That is true.
It takes you some time to master the technique, you win some games and lose others but Master Selak doesn't seem to mind. The most important thing to him as that you persevered, you didn't give in to your feelings and use the dark side of the force and you did not take the easier path.
OOC:
You now have access to the influence power
