Questions about the Rules/Laws of Hero Work

Mar 18, 2019 3:14 pm
This is general chat area for questions regarding Hero Work. I'm trying to create a worked that makes sense in some ways. The government regulates Heroes and keeps them in line. Sometimes there is red tape to get in your way and this is where you can ask questions to make sure you understand the rules and laws of the setting, not specifically the game. Game Rules questions go in the General Chat questions area.

So, just to be clear, it is possible to play a vigilante, just that you have the double problem that the heroes treat you like a villain, and the villains treat you like a hero? The benefit being obviously that you march to your own drum. I imagine that a vigilante could make themselves useful enough that the majority of the government might turn a blind eye, but there would always be those hardliners that feel that any leniency towards vigilantes is wrong, since that just encourages more vigilantism.

I want you to play a hero who is legit, about to make it into the top 10. If that hero has opinions that make doing vigilante heroing on the down-low a good thing, that is fine, but their "day-job" is Pro Hero.

Sounds reasonable. I was thinking of a character concept of a former vigilante who was blackmailed into taking a sponsorship on the cheap, which could fit your requirements while still adding an element of friction with the sponsor as a drama point.

Like, the character would be framed into a situation where there was lots of collateral damage, and the sponsor offers a bailout with heavy strings attached that the character has no choice but to accept

That is one of the sicenarios I was thinking might be used. I'm on board with that. We will discuss these details more as we all get going. At this point we have two players who posted in the interest check forum who haven' joined, but it has only been a couple hours so I want to give them time before we go full-steam-ahead.

Yeah I'm not married to the concept at all yet. My final character might look dramatically different

So, do heroes have to file reports after they work like police officers, or is that something that is taken care of by their sponsor?

Officially, the heroes file a report with their sponsors much like an after action police report, then the sponsors rep files it with the authorities.

If your character justs wants to file a direct, honest, no embellishment report of the facts, I probably won't run a scene for it or ask you to do anything. Your Hero migjt have to face consequences for theor actions though...so if you want to fudge details here and there, I might have you post about it.

Like, say your hero crushes a fire hydrant and the blast of water destroys a store front. You might try to blame that on the hulking brute of a villain. Maybe you were pushed. Maybe your sponsor is Verizon and they don't think they need to pay for the AT&T store that got destroyed so you cook your report a bit. That will need to be detailed, and likely tested in some way.

Alright. I could see that being interesting.
