Chapter 1: Seas of Sand

Mar 28, 2019 4:18 am
First thing is first. Always.

Your job is to play your characters as real people. Wherever they may be, however they may find themselves there. They’ll have agency, yes. And they’ll be dangerous. Capable. But, ultimately, real.

My job is to treat them that way. Real, that is. And the world around them.

Just to level set:
Whatever happened to our broken world happened 50 years ago. And when it happened, the psychic maelstrom came to be. Open your brain to it and it can give you more than you should have. But it can also take from you things you potentially might not normally share.

To set expectations:
You all know each other. You’re all allies. You don’t have to be friends, but you do have to be allies to start. After we start out, where it goes from there is fine in any direction.

Now, each of you introduce yourselves. Give us your name, look, and outlook. I’ll be asking some questions as we go.

This is Dart. She's only 17 years old and has lived all of her life on her father's sand crawler "Tessa" . Two years ago, her father Errol went MIA on a mission where he was the Driver. No one knows where he went or if he's still alive. Dart has taken over command of the crawler since she's the one who knows best how to handle this beast of a machine. They went looking for Errol for a whole year but he was nowhere to be found, so they had to give up and declare him dead.
Dart naturally hasn't given up. Although she doesn't go actively looking for her father anymore, she has hope to see him again and always keeps an eye and an ear open for hints of him.

Most of you had probably joined Tessa's Crew under Errol. Maybe some didn't take it that well that they would now be driven around by a 17 year old girl. She may not be in command of anyone per se, but in all matters concerning Tessa, she has the last word.

This is Lee Specter. At age 19 she joined Errol on the Tessa after it broke down a few miles from the Hardhold she grew up in. He was impressed by her mechanical inclination and offered her a job and a new home. Now, at age 26, she continues her career as the Tessa's mechanic, in service to her friend Dart. Lee isn't hard to look at, but the wiry frame, freckled face, and penchant for being covered in grease and oil at any given time has made it hard to hold down a relationship. Doesn't matter to her much, she's more married to her work as it is.

Lee supports Dart as the new Driver, but will often offer her advice (away from the rest of the crew as to not embarrass her) if she thinks she's making a bad call.

growing up in the slum, especially a slum near a city-settlement is rough in a very sharp kind of way. you need to be keen and hone your awareness or someone trying to steal the rivets from your jeans might give you a few cuts on your face for the trouble you caused them by existing..
in my youth I made fast friends with Snipes, another gutter kid kind of like me, but a little older. I was the brains and he was the adventure kid and together we caused mayhem in our own little lives, stealing from people we thought had too much, carving out a little piece of the city for ourselves, gambling and cheating and making a living by flying under the radar... we had a small gang of friends who helped us out. one in particular who was our second in command, a tough-as-nails girl named Vasquez. she was so tough and no-nonsense that other boys on the street would make fun of her for being 'too much like a boy' but she always had a devastating come-back, no matter what anybody said. we respected Vasquez
one day though, we got in over our heads.
we were dressed in the nicest duds we could steal, running our old tricks in a high-er than usual end gambling house, full of the confidence of young adulthood. we had taken all the money that was possible to take from the lower tiers of regulars when a strange man sat down across from us and gave us a special deal...one coin he put on the table against the mountains of gambling chips we had gathered. the crowd hushed when he pulled it out but we naively thought it was just an odd novelty coin.
he explained to us that this coin was a token from those who had destroyed the world, those who had known what was coming, and those who had prepared. he explained to us that this coin was the access code to a better life. to a way OUT.
we won, but on our way out, we dropped the extra cards (aces mostly, a few jacks) we had been keeping hidden on our body, and the weighted dice...all hell broke loose, my friend Snipes with the coin in his hand went right, and I, with the mountain of coin went left.
...for months Snipes never came back to our usual meeting place...he never came back from wherever he went that night. without my friend and partner in crime, confused and feeling swindled, but with enough coin in my pocket to leave the slum I decided to do something that my skills as a gutter kid would help me with, open an establishment for drinking, gambling and a few other oddities one might desire if they were otherwise in good company and couldn't get (or were ashamed to procure). Vasquez wanted to come, and I liked and trusted her, so I kept her on as the resident bouncer and procurement muscle..
I found the Tessa and her crew and noticed that they had vacancy and a large amount of space. I signed on, thinking that as long as we were traveling, I might have a better chance at never getting caught by all the people we swindled or by that strange man. I might also have a better chance at finding my friend Snipes somewhere out there...

at 30 now, I remember my parents telling me the story of how things used to be and the daily struggle they went through raising me. even though I wasn't alive before the cataclysm the contrast makes me jaded today....

Love it. So, let’s dig in.

Dart, lotta responsibility. Dad’s gone. It’s you. So, let’s chat:

- Who else was looking desperately for Errol?
- Does Dart have crew? Who does (other than the other PCs) she rely on?
- Who has given the Sand Crawler the most trouble?
- Where did you last take the Van?

Lee, you’re keepin’ shit going. The whole thing, really. Like it. So, tell me the score:

- Which hardhold did you grow up in?
- When you broke down, what were you running from? Or to?
- Other than Dart (and the other PCs), who da you care about?
- And who cares about you?
- Do you like where you’re at?

Grave, love the biz. Keeping a haven alive aboard the crawler, I see. You’ve seen some shit and then some, my guess. So, what then:

- Have you been to that fateful gambling house since?
- Does Vasquez remember the whole ordeal? How did she get out?
- How do you owe Gams?
- Why is Lits your worst regular?
- Why is Toyota your best?
- Outta all of ‘em, who do you care about most? Can be someone yet unamed.

WlfSamurai says:
Dart, lotta responsibility. Dad’s gone. It’s you. So, let’s chat:

- Who else was looking desperately for Errol?
Obviously Tessa's crew. Other than that his girlfriend at the time, her name is Line, an angel in profession as well as in Errol's eyes. She lived in a hardhold we came through from time to time and didn't really like Dart. But when Errol went missing she helped Dart and the crew. When they gave up, she returned to her home, but the relationship between her and Dart had bettered over the year.
WlfSamurai says:
- Does Dart have crew? Who does (other than the other PCs) she rely on?
The crew generally consists of the PCs, with some part time additions for various tasks if needed. But there is one guy who Dart visits every time they come to his hardhold: Sammy, her maternal grandfather. He's a quiet guy who has seen the world before whatever happened, and he helps her out with advice as well as supplies.
WlfSamurai says:
- Who has given the Sand Crawler the most trouble?
That would probably be Hammer. He's the boss of a gang of raiders who have attacked the Tessa more than once. It has been some time since the last attack though, so Dart is a bit on edge everytime they get close to Hammer's territory.
WlfSamurai says:
- Where did you last take the Van?
Just to a small hardhold to get some fuel. But a week ago they've been in a ruined coal plant to salvage some stuff.

WlfSamurai says:

Lee, you’re keepin’ shit going. The whole thing, really. Like it. So, tell me the score:
- Which hardhold did you grow up in?
Lee was born in a hardhold deep in the Desert Wastes, known simply as 'Oasis'. Built in the remains of a long-forgotten quarry (supposedly before the Desert was deserted), it is a fortress of stone and steel. At the deepest point of the Oasis lies a pristine lake of vibrant blue water (a precious resource in the Wastes), upon which sits the palace of Lotus, the beautiful but deadly queen of the Oasis.
The high-class residents of the Oasis live either in the palace, or in large estates carved into the stone near the lake. The vast majority live in homes and huts made of scrapped wood and steel.
WlfSamurai says:
- When you broke down, what were you running from? Or to?
OOC:
Lee didn't break down, she fixed the Sand Crawler when it broke down nearby. But I'll fill in some details anyhow.
Lee lived with her father, Ethan Specter (known as Ghost) in a nice home near the palace. Ethan had made a name for himself as a capable engineer and machinist, developing the Oasis's water filtration system that made the lake-water drinkable (the quarry's various residues made the water very toxic). Lee inherited her father's mechanical savvy, and would do odd jobs around the hardhold. Fixing armor and weapons, even developing some, as well as helping her father fix the variety of warmachines that comprised the Oasis's mobile defense.
In her free time, Lee liked to scavenge for parts in the desert outside the safety of the hardhold's walls. Her little acts of rebellion did not sit well with her father, who was very protective of her after her mother's 'death'. Lee never met her mother, and wasn't entirely sure if she was dead.
It was on one of her scavenging runs that she came across the Tessa, broken down after a run in with some unknown assailant. With the scrap she had on hand, and a few parts she found within the Tessa, she got her up and running again, but not before putting together that the 'assailant' was one of her father's war machines. The Oasis wasn't always kind to visitors. She intends to keep that discovery with her until the day she dies.
Lee is running from her old life. Her father. The lies about her mother. And the realization that her father's inventions, while saving the Oasis, were threatening innocent lives.
WlfSamurai says:
- Other than Dart (and the other PCs), who da you care about?
Lee still cares for her father, though she doesn't have the stomach to face him, even after all these years. She has a respect for Lotus, whom she met on a few occasions, but fears her like most sane people do. Lee would love to meet her mother, if given the chance (Lotus may be her mother, but both Ghost and Lotus would have wanted to keep it secret. Lee would have no idea). Lee also had a healthy respect for Dart's father, who was much kinder and down-to-earth than her own.
WlfSamurai says:
- And who cares about you?
Lee is sure that her father is still out there, worried about her and hoping she will come home if he is not actively looking for her. She'd like to say the same about her mother, but who knows.
WlfSamurai says:
- Do you like where you’re at?
Lee loves being aboard the Tessa. It feels much more like home than the one she had in Oasis.

- Have you been to that fateful gambling house since?
Yes, I have one time, but nobody recognized me. Places like this see so many faces and I had completely changed. well , not completely but enough that I was anonymous. I had hair on my face, clothes that I actually owned, and a certain care in my step I didn’t have last time. I sat down and played an honest, low stakes game and lost on purpose. I took in my surroundings. Not much had changed in a few years, and yet things had. The building was the same but the people were different and so it felt like a different place. Security is a little tighter than it used to be though..
- Does Vasquez remember the whole ordeal? How did she get out?
After our ordeal with the gambling and the coin, our gang was found out, we weren’t street punks anymore - we had to disband, become regulars again, dissolve into the street. Vasquez had grown accustomed to the reputation her affiliation with us had gotten her, she wore it like armor on the street, so without much else to go on, she decided to cast her luck with what she knew and come along - maybe rebuild the gang, maybe hang on by a thread to the family she cared about.
- How do you owe Gams?
Gams took the fall for me. As I was escaping back then, I had almost been caught. Gams got caught instead of me, knowing almost nothing of what I had been up to with Snipes. They caught him thinking he was me (at first). They brought him in, roughed him up a little, pulled his nails that sort of thing, but since he didn’t know anything they let him go, although they still harass him from time to time. I owe him and he knows it.
- Why is Lits your worst regular?
Freaking Lits is unfortunately Toyota’s girl and he won’t let her go, so they always come together. She stirs the pot, and the last thing I need is someone stirring the pot, bringing attention to the low-key quiet, not-getting-caught establishment. It’s always something, you can’t plan for what it’ll be this time, one time she had a flu and infected everyone, one time she carefully started a fight between two random patrons that escalated so hard that a bunch of my stuff got messed up. One time she poured all the liquor into different bottles so we couldn’t make a decent drink until we had sorted it out, sometimes she just talks too loud, one time she stood outside and took an ‘entry fee’ for people coming in. That kind of stuff. This is how the phrase (Lits’ tits!) became a pejorative when something goes wrong around the place - we even have a bell we ring when someone breaks a glass or loses everything in a single gamble
- Why is Toyota your best?
Toyota is great - I totally get why he’s with a troublemaker like Lits - because he can handle it. Collected, smooth and likable, toyota knows he can smile and chat his way out of any situation (including a crazy one induced by Lits), so when things get crazy he sits back and smiles and continues his drink and only diffuses the situation when someone asks him to, or it comes to his doorstep directly. Toyota is not only a pleasure to have around and trustable (as much as you can expect a regular customer to help out around the place) but he also talks good about my place everywhere he goes. Most of the new faces I see have heard good things from Toyota and have decided to check it out for themselves.
- Outta all of ‘em, who do you care about most? Can be someone yet unarmed.
My favorite, my secret favorite is a younger guy who comes in sometimes. I like him because he reminds me of myself. He mostly keeps to himself, occasionally chatting with whoever is near him. It’s obvious to be, but not to everybody else that even coming to my little traveling place is a bit out of his league. I think he likes coming because of similar reasons I liked going to places that were out of my league when I was younger...I don’t know much else about him, he carries a spear, which is a slightly unusual weapon for just anybody, but I’ve never seen him use it.

No one is sure whether Scab is a boy or a girl, what age, or even if they're fully human. No one can be sure exactly when they took up residence on the Tessa. The child-thing and that crazy lizard started turning up here and there, in every imaginable crawl-space on the crawler, only to vanish when anyone tried to speak or approach. Then some of Lee's tools start to go missing. Then one of Dart's belt packs. A pack of cards from Grave's space. A couple of Xo's shivs.

Lately, it seems the child-thing has begun to warm up to the Tessa crew. At least, they stopped fucking scurrying away whenever someone so much as glanced their way. Just the other day, Lee actually learned the kid's name: Scab.

Scab, there you are! We found you. I get we'll probably never REALLY know you. Try to answer, all the same. If you can:
- So, why the Tessa? Why not anywhere else out in the Sands?
- Is there anyone who really knows you? If so, who?
- Where were you last before the Tessa?
- Is there anyone who's looking for you or trying to track you down?
Apr 21, 2019 2:52 pm
OOC:
I'm so sorry this fell under my radar! Thank you for reminding me, Herioas!
- I used to live with the geckos underneath the sand.
- The Tessa spoke to me, called me to her. What, am I the only one who can hear her speak?!
- I had a twin. But I don't know where they've gone. I wonder if they're looking for me?
May 14, 2019 7:09 pm
Excellent. Thank you for telling us about yourselves.

Let's do Hx. We'll need to go in turn order. Look at your playbook and do what it says under the Hx section. If you have something that says you can interrupt a turn, feel free to do so.

Here's the randomly generated turn order:

1 ... Lee
2 ... Scab
3 ... Dart
4 ... Grave
May 14, 2019 8:05 pm
Scab. Hx +1,
Everyone else. Hx -1
May 14, 2019 8:16 pm
Lee, can you include why their Hx is set to that, please?
May 14, 2019 8:36 pm
+1 to Scab because I find them the strangest.
-1 to everyone else because I'm kind of strange myself.
May 14, 2019 8:55 pm
Love it.

Scab, it's your turn.
May 19, 2019 7:03 am
Okay. Let’s skip Scab and move to Dart. Please do you Hx.
May 19, 2019 3:42 pm
• Which one of you once got me out of some
serious shit?

This would probably be Grave, so he gets +1
• Which one of you has been with me for days on
the road?

Feels like Lee, because she has been with me on the Tessa for a long time. +2
• Which one of you have I caught sometimes
staring out at the horizon?

This could very well be Scab. +3 for them.

Any objections? Technically I am supposed to ask you guys for this.
If the Battle Babe joins later on, they'll get -1.
