The City
Bellingham Washington, a city settled between the ocean and a lake, with the high mountains behind it. The city is situated on Bellingham Bay which is protected by Lummi Island, Portage Island, and the Lummi Peninsula, and opens onto the Strait of Georgia. It lies west of Mount Baker and Lake Whatcom and north of the Chuckanut Mountains and the Skagit Valley. Whatcom Creek runs through the center of the city. Bellingham is 18 miles south of the US-Canada border and 50 miles southeast of Vancouver.
It is also a place of powerful magic, a place where four Ley Lines meet, two crossing over water, and two crossing over land. This place has a history of magic, with it dating back to the First Peoples, the Lummi, who lived here, to the encroachment of other magics from other lands. As it is, there is a loosely kept peace between the various factions who live in the city. Mortals, Fea, Wyrd, and Damned have all seemed to claim territory and managed to keep the peace, sharing the power of the location.
Bellingham's neighborhoods include Birchwood, Columbia, Lettered Streets, Barkley, Fairhaven, and Downtown.
The Magic
Magic is not science.
That is to say, one cannot always expect the same results from any spell when it is cast, magic is a power that flows and fluxes with time, and place, and as all things are in motion, so then is magic. Even year to year the power of a place and spell may change as we are moving through the vast cosmos.
There are though general rules to magic. These rules seem to hold with most spells.
The rule of Exchange- If you want to do something, you must expect an exchange of equivalent energy. This could be immediately or happen over time, there is no way to tell, but if you wish to do harm to another, you can expect harm to come to you.
The rule of Mitigation- You can use elements and other fetishes to act as channels or other means to access power. This can change the rule of Exchange, the Exchange is then down with the other element or fetish. Almost always this is ties to some other plane or spirit.
The rule of Focus- If the spell is not focused correctly, then the effect could vary wildly. Items can be used to focus the spell. It seems you either need more item, or items with a stronger connection to the subject of the spell. In either case, the more focused the spell, the better it will act.
The rule of Three, Six, And Twelve- It seems there is a rule where if you have items or casters in these numbers it will change the magnitude of the spell or the likelihood of it being focused better. The numbers seem to correlate to the natural clock and calendar, and this is why some days have more power than others.
In this game magic will be more mystical. You can use it how you wish, but know that there is no hard and fast rule of what a spell will do. There is no system in the rules of what it costs to cast a spell, or how much damage it will do. Magic is magic, and see it is kept as a mystical force, not one to be easily nailed down. It is like water, it flows to fill the vessel we want to use it for.
The Mystery
The city has a dark past. Lately, the local reports have been of people who are vanishing, or perishing under strange circumstances. Rumor in the shadows is that something has woken and is hunting. The Dreaming is saying that a rift has opened and a Rager is out and killing. Either way, something is hunting the Other-ly, something dangerous and leaving nothing behind. Attempts to contact those who perished have gone without reply, so the souls of those killed are missing. Whatever it is, it is a force that is hunting those who have peeked behind the veil.
The Point of View
You will want to write your posts in first person. I will want you to write in your character’s voice, and will want the thoughts and feeling of the character expressed. This could be in just descriptions of the character, how they sit, or even if they sit, who they look at, the expression of their eyes, all these things can show what a character is feeling. You can also use the thought text with the ~ character to write out the thoughts they have or clearly write out the emotion they have. These can be important as there are character who can sense emotions, or even read minds.
