Scene 2: Dinner and a Show

Apr 24, 2019 2:16 am
Elysium takes up the top two floors, 59th and 60th, of The Franklin Building. It has become The Spot for heroes and those that want to be seen with heroes to eat. The owners have has hired the best in security, both mundane and super powered. The restaurant can be accessed from either the garage entrance or the ground entrance leading to an express elevator. Or from above for those heroes inclined to that mode of travel. The paparazzi constantly swarm the entrances and monitor air traffic for any gossip they might glean from who comes and goes and with whom they do so. Unauthorized drones that get to close to the sky doors are shot down and confiscated. Press that get to eager are detained by security until their credentials are verified. The restaurant has been open for a few years now so everyone has learned to follow the rules. There hasn't been a villain attack since the fourth month of operation. There are rumors however that a super-powered individual with mind-control abilities is on the premises and is the reason no one gets out of hand anymore, but the owners have never confirmed that and the city authorities don't seem interested in telling either.

Inside the restaurant is a classic fine dining establishment. Plush carpets, crisp white linens, a full bar and dessert cart. The food itself is not actually prepared in house. The owner employs 8 of the finest chefs from around the world and each of them prepares their own meals in their professional kitchen. Three world class teleporters wait in the back room for a signal when the orders are ready and retrieve it, then passing it to the wait staff. Of course all the kitchens are monitored for proper decorum at all times.

Patrons wishing to dine must choose either the more public 59th floor, into which the press can see and potentially ask questions of heroes, or the 60th floor which is closed off and far more intimate. The menus are the same, but the prices are different for each floor. The owner takes kickbacks from allowing press onto the 59th floor, so the prices there are lower, downright affordable even on a lower tier hero's budget. The price of admission is allowing the press to have at you if they want. On the 60th floor, the prices are a bit higher, to pay for the modicum of privacy.
OOC:
If you wish to dine on the 60th floor an have privacy, someone needs to make a Resources check, target is 3+. If you fail, dinner happens on the 59th where you need a Resources 1+ success to not be a broke deadbeat. Increase the difficulty by 1 if one person wants to cover the whole meal themselves (El Toro?).

Vitrius isn't a rich man, but he does know people. He's given the owner a call. The owner accepted a donation of several beautiful chandeliers, and is well disposed to take Vitrius' call... (edit:) Usually. He doesn't seem to be picking up now

Sorry, my internet was down all day today.
Although he could probably afford the 60th floor, Diego prefers the 59th. I mean, why would any one want to avoid being seen?

The maître d′ seats you on the 59th floor as requested. He leads you to a table near the middle of the room. It is set for four as you approach, but the empty chair and extra setting are quickly removed and the rest evenly redistributed by a pair of young waitstaff. The maître d′ pulls out Echo's chair and offers her menu first.

On the menu tonight are the following options:

Beef Tenderloin - Roasted with a spicy chili infusion, served medium rare and topped with chimichurri salsa; with Sauteed Wild Mushrooms

Coho Salmon - Oven-roasted wild salmon with chervil kumquat pesto; with Creamed Baby Spinach

Lobster Macaroni and Cheese - Gruyere, Irish Cheddar, and Cotija cheese, bay shrimp and chunks of Maine lobster baked with heavy cream and penne pasta; with Fresh Herb Risotto

Bombay Tarkari Tawa Pulao - Market fresh Vegetables, basmati rice, home ground spice mix; with Raita

Risotto Sottobosco - Lemon-basil Acquerello risotto, stracciatella cheese, garden vegetables

Chef's Choice Sashimi Sushi Vegetable Maki Combo - An assortment of the finest seafood with avocado, cucumber, asparagus, sweet potato

Emperor's Palace - Miso soup with mussels; Tofu with crab sauce; Chirashi sushi; Miso glazed black cod with sauteed broccoli

Tri-Tip with Chimichurri - Grilled steak with chimichurri sauce; with a fresh salad

As you peruse the menu, press stands some 30ft off snapping photos of your trio, and you assume other patrons. You feel you can speak without being overheard, but you never know. A waitress named Colleen shows up to take drink orders.
OOC:
You want to talk and coordinate the news appearance?
Apr 25, 2019 11:24 am
Echo asks for whatever drink the waitress thinks will go best with the Beef Tenderloin.

After the rest of the table gets their order taken and Colleen leaves, she speaks quietly to the other two. "So... how are we going to tell everyone we only caught 2 out of 5 of the villains tonight?"
Apr 25, 2019 11:27 am
Vitrius makes small talk, but waits until the meal and drinks archive to get to the meat of the issue.

"First, let me say, thank you both for your assistance apprehending those villains. Even though some got away, it was a frantic situation, and I hold myself responsible for that more than anything. I should have realized that they had people on the inside. But, we got two arrests and no civilian harm or collateral damage. We ought to be proud". Vitrius smiles. "Regarding the interview, have either of you done one before? The only ground rule I want to set is no bad mouthing each other. We're all on the same side, we all contributed, we can all share in the accolades"
Apr 25, 2019 1:03 pm
Echo smiles, Vitrius was always so formal. "I should be thanking you the most, Vitrius. If it wasn't for your quick thinking I wouldn't have gotten any camera time. Well... at least not the cameras I was after." Propping up an elbow and resting her head in her hand, she continues. "And you shouldn't take all the blame. I took out Slapshot, but once he was down, all I could think of was the next adversary. Restraining him didn't even cross my mind." She sighs.
"As for the interview, I've done a few for my sponsor, but those were always fight promotions. I had an agenda and a list of things I had to say to get paid. This is a little different. I'd let you do all of the talking if my boss wouldn't chew me out for it later."
Apr 25, 2019 2:54 pm
Diego orders the Beef Tenderloin as well and takes a long pull from his Corona (and orders a second)

"Oh yeah, completely agree with you there, can't be bad mouthing each other. Although, a little friendly rivalry is good for the camera too you know. But sorry, so what happened with the truck? I mean, I just saw it fly off and there was an explosion or something? And what do you mean there were five of the them? I only saw the three, hockey guy, baseball guy, and robot suit guy. What sport was he supposed to be? That old guy really needs to work on his idiom."
Apr 25, 2019 3:23 pm
"The driver and one of the guards were on on the heist, somehow. I tried to pursue but it got too... Hot. I think there must have been at least one more accomplice in the crowd too, Slapshot wasn't moving under his own power when we left him. The whole scenario was fishy too. Why attack the truck if you own the driver? I think that it's possible there were two heists at the same time. Very unfortunate I didn't have a chance to think it all through"
OOC:
Actually now that things have settled, Vitrius is going to have a good long think about that, starting with the suspiciously glass free truck

"Wow, yeah that is weird. That's like, maybe they needed to be seen for some reason? Cause yeah, they could have just made the truck disappear. But then, they'd probably suspect an inside job. Make it an obvious hijacking though, and it's the sportsball crew that did it. When you look at it that way, we did mess up their plan, we know it's an inside job. Hey, do we know who's truck that was?"
Apr 25, 2019 4:51 pm
"Someone in the crowd told me what happened to Slapshot. Some girl in knight's armor with a brain in a jar for a head came out of nowhere and ate him with a bunch of nanobots. Left Blitzer screaming and hollering that she didn't take him too. The informant said he had a tech power that made him sure it was nanobots." Echo fills in, taking a sip from the red wine she was brought.
She scrunches up her face in distaste. "This whole thing just feels kind of screwy."
Apr 25, 2019 5:52 pm
Diego nods, "Yeah, feels like a set up you know? Not sure how it could be, that's the feeling I get though. Jump off that bridge when we get to it I guess."
Apr 26, 2019 12:36 am
"I don't think it's super important right now. I'll have people follow up. Regarding the interview, I prepared a short script. You don't need to follow it exactly, but it'll help out keep on message and avoid getting side tracked. Interest read it. Also let me know if you don't follow the script, so I can account for that instead"

Vitrius nods, not breaking his smile. "It's your choice of course." He would have been shocked if El Toro had accepted the script, given his actions in the fight. Still, the mere suggestion might have annoyed him into a fixed pattern of action. That can be prepared for as well... As long as he didn't just act at random... Which he seemed to like to do... Vitrius was beginning to get a headache as the possibilities spun out in his mind, all stemming from El Toro

Echo reads over the script. As sound as it was, she would feel a little robotic reading off these carefully calculated statements. Was it for the best? Possibly, but she would be more comfortable just being herself. "You bring up a lot of good points in this; it just doesn't sound like me. I'll try to stick to some of the points, but I think I'll just wing it if it feels right."
Apr 26, 2019 3:55 pm
Diego nods, "Yeah man, gotta loosen up a bit. Go with the flow. Why are you so worried about this anyway? I mean they're just going to be like, 'Hey you guys are awesome!', and we'll be all 'I know right!?'" He glances at the script in Echo's hands, "And when did you even have the time to write all that?"
Apr 26, 2019 4:55 pm
To Echo: "I appreciate you having a look. Obviously I don't have the questions in advance, so I don't expect we'll be able to follow it verbatim in any case"

To El Toro, he grins. "I write quickly, thank goodness. Loosening up? Going with the flow? Not so much. Anyways, enough about the interview. What brings you two into the hero game?"
Apr 26, 2019 5:40 pm
Echo makes a face. "That's kind of personal. Sorry." She downs the rest of her wine in one fell swoop and beckons the waitress for a refill.
Apr 26, 2019 6:24 pm
Diego chuckles and follows suit, downing the rest of his second Corona, "For me it was my abuela. She was a hero too you know, pretty famous in her day. Telenova! Her thing was teleportation, herself and others. She could only do short range, line of sight, but line of site is still pretty far if she teleports you a few hundred yards up in the air."
Apr 27, 2019 5:40 am
The waitress comes back for Echo's refill, "Is there anything else I can get for anyone? By the way, I saw some of what happened to you today on the television by the bar. It was impressive watching you work, up until they got away... She realizes what she ust said and turns bright red with embarrassment. "Crap," she whispers under her breath. "I mean it happens to everyone starting out. Bad guys sometimes get away...well, not from The Warden...but you're all low ranked, people expect it sometimes." Her words might sting a little, but the are true enough.

"That's ok. Sometimes we need to make judgement calls, whether pursuing a villain is with the potential for harm to civilians. Mind you the top ten... Well they're the top ten for a reason."

If it sounds rehearsed it is, and right from the script on the table
Apr 29, 2019 3:23 pm
El Toro nods, "I mean, it's not like we're law enforcement. I can't arrest anyone. Our job is to keep people safe. Like, take that Blitzer guy. I mean, sure he got away, but without that suit of his he's just an old man. Threat neutralized. If the police want him, they have his face. They know who he is. They can track him down. And if he show up in another suit, we'll just kick his ass again."

With dinner over, you head over to the studio where the evening Hero Report is filmed. You arrive and are almost mobbed by fans and paparazzi asking for autographs and snapping pictures. You hear several shouted questions asking for comments about the day's action. "Are you all teaming up?" "Care to comment on your failures today?" "Why were you three first at the scene? Are any of you dating? Is romance in the air?"

Two men in with ear pieces sticking out of their collars and dark sports coats emblazoned with the network logo come out the front door with flanking a woman with short dark hair in a cream power suit (the business kind, not the hero kind) and a deep plum silk blouse come out to speak to you and the crowd. "Sorry folks, we get them first. They can answer your questions, if they want to, AFTER our broadcast. We've got half an hour to air, so I don't mean to be rude but we need to get you on set and screen test your costumes." Her tone is curt but professional. She turns around and enters the building while the two security guards stand aside and hold the doors for all of you.

Inside the lobby you turn several heads and get stares as you pass. Some mild hero worship seems to be taking place. A third security guard holds open an elevator door for all of you to enter. Once you do he reaches in and presses the button for the third floor then retracts his arm as the elevator doors close, leaving him on the first floor.

http://videoadvertisingnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Green-screen.jpg
The elevator comes to a stop and the doors open to reveal a studio set. You see four cameras, several monitors, all the various technical equipment that you expect to see in a television studio...except seeing it in person it diminishes it somehow. On television it seems like such a big open space, the background is usually an abstract geometric pattern of light and color, but now you can see that it is all green screen trickery. The "set" itself only about 10'x15' total.

There are people milling about all around you apparently getting ready for the show. The woman leads you to a far corner near the edge of the stage. You can see a series of slightly darker green "X" markings on the floor showing as many as six people where they should stand so they appear on camera and in the proper place once the virtual set is overlaid by the computer. You are shown to three directors chairs with your hero names written on them, which are also placed next to vanity mirrors.

"Alright, Echo, honey, and Mr. Rodriguez...I mean El Toro, if you could step onto one of the x's there for me. Vitrius, you are fine, your costume won't offer any problems to the computer. DAVE! Camera 3!" Across the room you see a man sitting at what looks like a giant switchboard. He presses some buttons and a red light turns on above the camera pointed at Echo and El Toro. All the monitors in the room now show the pair standing in the familiar background. It might come off as a little disorienting to see.

[b]"Ok, great. Didn't think there would be a problem, but you gotta check. MAKEUP! We are ready for you! Echo, babe, you look great, we won't touch a thing. Gentlemen, it's just stage makeup. Trust me you, want to look your best. We broadcast in 4K theses days. The fans will pick up on the slightest flaw and your popularity will plummet if you don't let us work our magic."
She leaves without waiting for a response. Suddenly, a man and two women appear pushing what appear to be tool boxes on carts, except instead of tools, there are pallets of makeup and brushes and hair-styling equipment.

They set to work without a word. Even though the other woman said they wouldn't do much to Echo, she is the last one out of the chair again. They applied heavy foundation, rouge, eye shadow, lipstick. In the end you still look like you did when you came in, but they have really pushed your features around. Your cheekbones have been contoured and your eyes have a really good smoky-eye. It's you, just more flat and washed out. The men are in similar if more bland in appearance. The makeup artists whip out their phones and snap a picture of each of you, then wheel their carts back to the other side of the room.

A moment later a young man with a clipboard and a headset places himself next to you. "I'm Kevin. I'm going to cue you when it's time. Seconds later the lights go out and the stage lights up. Standing in the center of the room are the show's hosts, Candy Briggs and Ray Jarvis. Somebody starts counting down from ten and then the anchors get into their script detailing the super events of the day. Several times they stop to remind viewers to log on to their website and vote for the rankings. After 9 minutes they cut to their first commercial, teasing the appearance of special guests when they return.

Kevin then directs you where to stand. He arranges you in order with Echo flanked by El Toro and Vitrius , then seems to listen to something through his headset, then rearranges you into a different order. This goes on until you have been arranged in every other possible order at least twice before apparently settling on the order he had the first time. With seconds to spare your makeup is touched up and the cameras for live again. Cindy and Ray cross the green screen set and start the interview.

"So, Vitrius, El Toro, Echo! It is a pleasure to have you on. In'it Candy."

"It is, it is Ray. Some real rising stars, bright shining stars, on our set today." Her tone seems a little dead, like she doesn't mean what she's saying exactly.

"So, what happened out there today, guys? I hear it was wild." Ray arches an eyebrow looking at no one in particular for a response.
OOC:
First come first serve on this question, but I will get to each of you.
May 4, 2019 11:55 am
Vitrius seizes the initiative, wanting to be seen as the leader of the group.

"Well in short we had a bit of action around an attempted heist. Echo took a big hit, but she's tough as nails and recovers fast, and gave twice as much as she took. El Toro tricked and outsmarted Blitzer, who promptly defeated himself. And I coordinated and provided support. Of choose, we were all surprised when the villains sent an evac team, and when more villains popped out of the truck that the first set were robbing! I tried to pursue but, well, you all must have seen what happened. Honestly we just wanted a statement from those villains, and their only crime was fleeing the scene. I would have needed to let them go anyways, and with a pyromancer in play the risk was too high. Still, we managed to take two villains off the street with minimal property damage or civilian injuries, so overall I would call it a win"

Echo nods in agreement, not having much to add to this part of the story.
May 5, 2019 1:44 pm
El Toro nods, "It was a strange crime. I mean who robs their own car? I'm still trying to figure out of they were doing insurance fraud or performance art. In any case the important thing is that no one got hurt."
May 6, 2019 3:06 am
"That is true, that no one got hurt and you deserve praise for that. Any word on what was in the armored vehicle that was attacked? asks Ray.

Off camera there seems to be something happening. The crew start milling about and Candy cocks her head and seems to be listening to someone through her earpiece before she smiles real big. Ray's eyes dart off camera, but he doesn't break his focus on you for more than a moment, but you see one eyebrow twitch.
May 6, 2019 1:23 pm
"No idea. Honestly, as long as it wasn't something dangerous, it wasn't really our business what was in the truck" Vitrius feels a tickle of foreboding watching the crew stir, but decides to ignore it and let the show go on.
May 6, 2019 3:14 pm
Echo does not like the look on Candy's face. Whatever could make a talk-show host smile like that was likely not going to be good for them. "Right. Our priority was to neutralize the threat and ensure that no bystanders were hurt by their attack. Had the truck not gotten away, our next priority would have been to see what all the fuss was about." Echo informs them.

"Well, I suppose we can't cry over spilled milk, can we?" Candy interjects.

"Indeed," Ray says, "but let's shift gears to the backlash of today. Putting aside the missing criminals, 2 out of 5 isn't so bad, but Echo, do you have anything to say regarding your...slip up? And El Toro Caliente, you destroyed a city utility box with your antics. Care to comment?"

With the stage lights in your eyes, it is hard to make out exactly what is going on off camera, especially if you aren't looking away from the news casters. However you can see a large figure standing next to the current active camera that was not there when you came in. It appears to be a man of hulking size. He is standing there with his arms crossed, passively watching the interview play out.
May 7, 2019 12:51 pm
Echo shrugs, not wanting to give Ray the satisfaction of an embarrassed reaction. "My powers require a very up close and personal style of fighting. I've done my best to take precautions against such malfunctions but they do happen. All I can do is go back to the drawing board to work on my look."
Looking into the camera, she addresses the audience. "Long time fans and those who have studied my career will notice that my outfit now is very different than when I started. I started out pretty simple, just wearing gym clothes that allowed me to utilize my agility, but I've had to go to sturdier and sturdier fabrics. Now," she announces, standing and showing off her newest costume, a tight, black-leather jumpsuit with no sleeves, heavy boots, and a bright pink leather jacket. It was almost identical to the one from earlier in the night, but seemed slightly more form-fitting. "I've moved into leathers. They're thick enough to take most direct hits and still allow me enough freedom of movement to fight effectively." She gives a turn, giving off the air of someone showing off a new product, while secretly showing off her assets to the viewers (another tactic that seemed to work for her pretty often). Echo sits with a proud look on her face.

El Toro grins and acts shocked in a mocking sort of way, "What are you saying Candy? I did no such thing of course. I was just talking to Blitzer, thinking perhaps I could get him to turn himself in. The man's a violent maniac, and he charged into that electrical box completely all on his own. He was lucky I was there to save him." Diego shrugs and grins, "All I did was talk after all."

Ray gives Echo a once over that comes off as a little pervy, but it seems he will get away with it as the monitors switch to showing the heroine explain her costume. When El Toro responds Candy answers with a hearty titter and looks to the camera and winks, as though sharing a secret with the viewers.

Then Ray takes center stage again. "Well heroes, that's all the time we have for tonight. We'll be watching your rising stars though. Viewers! Stay tuned after these messages. We have a surprise guest who has decided to accept our standing invitation and joined us in studio just a few moments ago. You won't want to miss it!"

With that the director calls commercial and the monitors show advertisements overlaid by a timer that starts at 1:45 and starts counting down the seconds until the broadcast goes live again. Ray and Candy walk away without another word. They approach the hulking figure standing in the shadows and speak to him for a moment before heading to the other side of the stage where three leather easy chairs have been placed. It seems they are going to have a more lengthy interview segment next.

Kevin comes back and ushers you off stage. "A moment please." the deep voice you all recognize says as the large man approaches you. It is Valor, the top ranked hero in Nova Gail.
https://i.pinimg.com/564x/26/06/47/2606477b4e0813fa57ff3f8e527303ab.jpg

Kevin absolutely wilts at the presence of the hero and stands there shaking. Valor puts a hand on his shoulder and smiles at him. Kevin seems to calm down. You all also feel a warm sensation of calm flow over you. You aren't sure why exactly, but any anxiety or concerns you had before now just don't seem that important.

"I'm sorry to spring this on you all, but I was hoping to have a word with you three, and well...I wasn't sure how to approach you outside the studio. Now that I am here, I really need to give this interview. I've been blowing them off for so long, I can't say no while I'm here. Would you mind waiting in the green room for me? I have some questions about what happened today. I think it is connected to something I've been working on."

The timer on the screens reads 36 seconds and everyone is looking a little anxious at Valor. They don't approach though, giving the hero time to speak with you.
May 8, 2019 12:09 pm
Vitrius is thinking fast. Having him on right after would overshadow them for sure. There was really only one way to fix that...

"Let us join you for the interview. Thank us for our help today. Do that and we - I'll help you with whatever you need"
May 8, 2019 1:00 pm
Echo snaps out of her own bit if hero worship for a second at Vitrius's request. Share an interview with Valor?! Despite the fact that they'd never get a question, she didn't think they'd go for it. But, if there was a chance... she looks to Valor for his answer.
May 8, 2019 2:18 pm
Diego really doesn't like the idea of getting upstaged, or extorting the city's top ranking guy. He looks at Vitrius and says, "Eh? You know that seems a bit desperate don't you? If he wants to thank us he'll thank us." He waves his hand and starts heading towards the greenroom, "I don't need it if it's not sincere."

Valor stands up a little straighter at Vitrius's request. He looks confused for a second and then breaks out in a wide grin. "Ah. heh heh heh...a player of the game, hmm? Alright. I can respect that. Come back on camera with me and get your screen time. Then we will go talk about what I came here for."
May 8, 2019 9:28 pm
Echo looks in shock at Valor and even more so at Vitrius. "I think I may join El Toro. I'm pretty sure the station would want an exclusive interview, and I don't want to tread on that." She says, "But I appreciate your willingness to have us with you. Maybe someday I'll earn that chair next to you." She says sincerely, turning to follow Diego. "Good luck." She says to Vitrius as she leaves.
She may regret not tacking a spot on the interview later on, but for now, Echo was confident that it would not look good on her to be on screen with Valor right now. Let her build herself up a bit first, better to do that than be seen as an upstart by the public or pulling in favors.
May 8, 2019 11:21 pm
Diego's tempted to float a neon sign above Vitrius' head with the word "Asshole" blinking on and off, but after a moment's consideration decides against it. "Dude's got balls, I'll give him that."

Vitrius has a brief flicker of doubt as the other two leave, but dismisses it. The first step of breaking into the top 10 is to even be considered a contender, and what better way than to have the top of the top acknowledge him directly?

"Lead the way" he says
May 9, 2019 2:58 am
Valor walks over to the interview set and motions for a second chair. He takes the one closer to the hosts, but he makes good on his word. He talks first about the action that kept him busy, a monstrous lizard like creature had appeared near the docks. It was 20 feet tall and could lift tugboats out of the water and throw them. Valor and Kid Contour took it on while UFO girl was catching ships. The footage is amazing. Then pivoting to the three of you he heaps acclaim on your group. He points out the difference in the encounters.

"Yes, a few of the crooks escaped, but we are talking about human lives, bad people, but still PEOPLE! They actions were taken in the name of public safety and in preservation of life. The monster I took down today was anything but human, so I could go all out and not worry about the consequences. Totally different circumstances. Vitrius, Echo and El Toro Caliente excelled today. For that I am grateful." He says that last line and looks directly into the camera, as though he challenging the viewers to defy him.
Once the show is over, Valor and Vitrius enter the green room together. Shutting the door on the excited and congratulatory crew, Valor turns to your group.

"OK, now we can talk." He looks at each of you, then around the room. "No, not here. Hold on." he closes his eyes and concentrates. There is a flash of golden light and suddenly the wind threatens to blow you off your feet. You look around and realize you are now standing on the helipad on top of Central Tower, the tallest building in Nova Gail City.

"Sorry about that. I just...I'm not sure what I've stumbled upon, or who I can trust. I'm taking a risk even talking to you three. I think you're ok though because you're new to all this. If you're in on it then I guess the game's over now. Nothing to do but go forward."

"I think you saw today, what I have suspected. Someone is manipulating the system. Someone has figured out how to control us, the whole hero system so that they can do...something...crime...of some sort. We fight villains and they bring drugs into the city. Or they make people and vast sums of money disappear. I have reason to believe that the armored car was carrying a piece of stolen government technology. I have no idea what it is, but my contacts tell me a secret military base was hit by supers and some of the stolen tech was smuggled here. And it got in because our attention was diverted elsewhere.

But we got lucky today. Whoever is behind the tech theft has enemies. The Fanatics represented a second mastermind, a rival. They first crook couldn't adjust in time, so they sent me on a wild goose chase and called in the rookies, no offense, to deal with rival team. At least...that's what I think is happening."
May 9, 2019 11:26 am
"Are you saying that villains have infiltrated dispatch? It seems like a lot just do some light crimes, like you described. Apart from the theft at the military base of course. I was starting to get suspicious as well, they knew I was going to be one of the responders and planned in advance. The armoured truck they had had no glass in it at all, not a spec. If it had there'd have been no way for it to get away"
May 9, 2019 1:58 pm
Echo successfully suppresses a squeal of delight as Valor transports them to the tower. She is glad she did, though, when Valor begins to confide his worries in them. "I knew this all felt wrong, but... wow. Is there anything we need to do?" She asks Valor.
May 9, 2019 5:22 pm
El Toro nods, he's been thinking something like this himself actually. Turning to Vitrius he says, "You wouldn't need to infiltrate dispatch, you just need to be able to 'influence' it. I mean, people think the whole hero system is about fighting crime and all, and it is. But if you look at what it does, the whole system is optimized to be entertaining. If you could figure out how dispatch decides who to put where, it wouldn't be hard to game the system. Get the system to put on a show for you, and do the real work in the background." He grins, "I mean, that's kind of my thing too after all."
May 9, 2019 6:55 pm
Valor points at El Toro. "Exactly. There's no telling how deep this goes. It could be as simple as someone outside the system manipulating the system we built..." Looking to Vitrius, he continues. "...or it could go all the way to the top of the Dispatch system. I suspect it's worse than we know yet. The crimes these villains are committing are more devious than we know. The monster I fought with the other Top 10, it was cybernetic. Someone grew it and enhanced it with robotic enhancements. It was some kind of nano-tech I'm told. U.F.O. Girl said the tech broke apart into nearly microscopic pieces and then some of it teleported away when she examined it."

Crossing his arms over his chest he looks down. His expression is one of frustration and uncertainty. "Echo, I haven't the first idea about how to move forward. That's the problem. I can't see the pattern yet. I was hoping..."

He drops his arms and puffs out his chest, his chin rises resolutely. You all feel an inner warmth...a confidence that wasn't there moments ago. "...no, more than hope! I know that if we work together, if we find others who are on the side of justice and peace, we can put an end to this nefarious gang. Put an end to any abuse and corruption in the hero system! Be what we are meant to be! HEROES!
May 9, 2019 7:56 pm
"At the very least, they haven't been shy about who they are. We can catch some of the lower level drones and work our way up, like a good old fashioned mob bust."
May 9, 2019 8:12 pm
A lightbulb goes off in Echo's head when she hears Valor talk about the monster. "One of the bystanders at the scene told me about nanotech too. After Vitrius and I chased after Fastball, some lady in armor with a brain in a jar for a head came and stole Slapshot from the scene. The guy described it like he was eaten by some black gunk, but his powers made him sure they were nanobots."
May 10, 2019 2:28 am
Valor arches an eyebrow, looking at your group over. "It's the start of a plan. We need to track this 'brain-in-a-jar lady' if we can, or Slapshot if he resurfaces. I hate to burden you with all the work here, but I might be under surveillance. If I look to deep into an incident I wasn't involved in, it might tip our hand. I'll follow up with UFO-Girl and the nanotech she found, and see if I can't learn more about what was stolen from the military. You three can pursue the other leads, agreed?"
May 10, 2019 12:03 pm
Vitrius' first thought is that a secret mission is the last thing he would ever want. A lot of work, a lot of reputation damaging skulking about, working for the top 10 without being seen working with them, and in the end everything is put back to rights and the status quo is restored. He has half a mind to reuse on principle. But...

Vitrius depends on the system. It's everything to him. If the system is corrupted, that gives outside agents way too much influence on his actions. The public is easy to sway, an unknown cabal of villains might have any motivation. The system needs to be protected at any cost, or there is no point to any of this. And...

Well, a corruption scandal could go a long way to knocking some of the top 10 off their high horses, if it could be excised in such a way that it doesn't bring down the system entirely. And being a key player in that exposure is sure to help his ranking...

"I'm in, but I'll need your help. You have clout and access to resources we just don't have. For example, we need to talk to fastball. He knew what was in the truck, and presumably he knew who he was trying to steal from. You could grease the wheels to make that access possible"
May 10, 2019 12:40 pm
"It might be best for Valor to take less of a role in what we do, Vitrius. If we don't want people knowing what we're up to, having the number one hero call in a bunch of favors for us will look suspicious." Echo bounces a bit on her toes, weighing something over. "I can probably get us access to Fastball. We took him down, so people won't take our motivations into account and... I know a few people inside the system that can help."

"Hmm, I didn't want to speak for you Echo, but obviously if you can do that, that's preferable. Still I'd prefer if Valor wasn't completely arms length. Anything he can do without exposing himself would be beneficial to us all"
May 10, 2019 3:11 pm
Diego grins, "I'm up for anything. I mean I don't think we'd be exactly skulking about. No reason we couldn't just be pursuing brain-in-a-jar on our own right? I mean, I was thinking we were going to do that even before Valor suggested it, weren't you too Vitrius?"
May 10, 2019 8:17 pm
Vitrius nods
"Too many things didn't add up. I would have needed to investigate regardless, just so I didn't get caught unprepared."

He leaves of the implied "...again"
May 11, 2019 3:19 am
"Excellent. I have a friend, someone I know that I...we...can trust. I'll give you his contact information. He's an agent at a Colton and Praxis PR firm. He can take your call at anytime and avoid suspicion, make up whatever story you want if you need to, he does it all, book deals to scandal mitigation. He can get your message to me and I'll respond as quickly as I can. But don't be afraid to reach out to me directly if we meet in the field. We've been on TV together now so we are acquainted."
May 11, 2019 5:13 pm
"We should have some code words, something you can tell people you've vetted, so that we know that they know everything and vice versa"
May 12, 2019 3:54 am
Valor thinks for a minute, then says, "OK...what would that be then? And they...just say it to you?
May 12, 2019 4:51 am
"It doesn't make a big difference, as long as we're not likely to use it accidentally. Ours will be valiant sloth, yours will be giant cheetah. If you send someone to us who you trust and have let in on the investigation, tell them to tell us your code word, and the same applies vice versa. If people you send don't use the code word, we'll assume they can't be trusted with investigation materials."
May 12, 2019 11:33 pm
Echo thinks it over. Other than the code words being a little ridiculous, at least in her opinion, it wasn't a bad idea.

I don't want to rush anyone, if you have any other questions or ideas for this part of the story, by all means continue, but I have reached a good stopping point in my mind. The only thing left to really do is hash out the code word plan and to say goodnight.

Oh and also, need rolls from you all to gauge your standings. Roll for Rapport, a Contacts, and a Resources. Fate Points can be spent, as usual, but there aren't any additional scene Aspects to invoke.

Vitrius: Your Rapport roll is at a 2 difficulty. People on Twitter are complaining about how you jammed up the highway with your chase, and still managed to let the truck and Slapshot get away. Your Contacts difficulty is 1, you seem to have 'borrowed' a lot of glass from the city. You may have put it back, but the fact you took it is upsetting some people. Resources roll is a 0 difficulty, you looked good out there and your benefactors are happy, if not excited.

El Toro: Your Rapport roll is difficulty 1. The people seem suitably impressed, but some are saying you weren't active enough, and Slapshot did get away. Your Contacts roll is also a 1 difficulty as the city workers aren't happy or buying the accidental damages angle. Resource roll is at 0.

Echo: Your Rapport roll is at a 3. There is a lot of backlash over the exposed flesh, coupled with the fact Slapshot got away and you personally were the one to take him down. Contacts roll is at a 0 difficulty as you didn't seem to be responsible for any damage to the city. Your Resource roll is also a 0 difficulty...the corporate guys see any press as good press it would seem.

"Fair enough. Go home and get some rest. You've earned it today. I will have my friend contact you tomorrow. Now...back to the TV station? Street level?" He hands you each a business card with the Colton & Praxis logo. The name on the card is Hansen Jeffrey. Then he prepares to teleport you back to the television station.
