I like to implement a proficiency-based setup of what knowledge your character has, which is tied to the intelligence abilities of History, Arcana, Religion and Nature. This is to say, if your character is proficient in this skill, he/she will have automatic access to certain knowledge, which will be preceded with that skill in bold and parentheses.
For example:
(Arcana): you have knowledge of all spells 1-3rd level (not how to cast them, but are familiar them/have heard of them and can recognize them being cast).
anything marked (General) is known to everybody. Some less-known facts can also be known with a good enough roll with the right skill. As all the info I'm marking in this way is clearly visible to all the players (as well as some info thats in the PhB which I would only consider known to a few), I ask you to RP as though your character does not know this information (unless you have the correct proficiency etc).
