Ravnica Character Creation Discussion

May 7, 2019 12:26 am
OK, here is where we start hashing out ideas and any details we want to share. Ask questions if you have them.

As a reminder, these are the available guilds:

Azorius Senate, the police force, legislative and judicial body of Ravnican bureaucracy.
Boros Legion, a standing army that protects the Guildpact and contains the League of Wojek, the official peacekeepers of the City of Ravnica.
Orshov Syndicate, originally the most widespread religion of Ravnica. Now it regulates trade and banking, among other activities.
Selesnya Conclave, promotes what is now the strongest, nature-based religion of Ravnica and its ledev guards patrol the rural areas along with being conservationists and charity workers.

Lot of Soldier types among those guilds, but I could see any class working with any guild. If you need guidance, I'm happy to help.

As stated on the game info page, any officially printed D&D content is available to your PC. Revised Ranger and Artificer are aloud. Any other Unearthed Arcana needs my permission. I'm a light touch but I don't follow every article so I may have missed something here or there. Mystic is a no unless there has been an update I am unaware of.

We are starting at level 3, using the 27 Point Buy system or Standard Array as described in the PHB. I recommend taking the average for hit points, but if you want to roll for them, you can do that here.

The Ravnica book talks about certain races belonging to certain guilds, I consider that a guideline, not a rule. You will stand out in the eyes of the people if you play a Simic Hybrid working for the Boros Legion, but it isn't impossible.

Also, I want you to look the part of seasoned professionals. So in addition to starting equipment you get 1500 gp. Enough to buy that plate armor that all Paladins dream of. Ravnica is a plane of industrial magic. Thus, magic items are more common than other settings. You can spend this gold to buy Consumable items and Common and uncommon magic items. Normally there aren't any prices for the items, but I find this pdf to be useful. It doesn't have everything, so if something is missing let me know and we can discuss it.

Reknown - You each get 5 points of Reknown to affect your standing with the guilds. Spend your Reknown on any guild you want, but your personal guild must always be the highest, or tied for the highest. Your Reknown score can be added to Charisma checks when dealing with members of the appropriate guild.

I think that covers everything, but ask questions if you need to.
May 7, 2019 12:42 am
Ah I see I posted in the other thread too soon! I would like to play a loxodon (is that okay DM? You mentioned Simic Hybrid, and I think they're in the same book) druid from Selesyna. He has spent his whole life within the vast boughs of Vitu-Ghazi, but when Nissa awoke the great tree he found that he could not stay isolated any longer. All 5 Reknown would be spent on Selesyna, though if Reknown is a one-time mechanic (i.e. we aren't getting any more of it) I will rethink this to keep from being a one trick wonder. He previously maintained balance within the ecosystem of Vitu-Ghazi, including dangerous delvings deep into the roots to combat insidious rot - some natural, some the devious plots of rival guilds!
Thoughts? Suggestions? Wild speculations?

Took me a minute to get my ppst put together for this thread. No worries. Yes the Ravnica book is open to use so aLoxodon is fine and fitting for that guild. Sounds good.

Your Reknown will increase as you complete missions, this is just the initial allotment for being level 3.

Also...for everyone, the War pretty much just ended... I'm thinking almost one year....lets say 9 months. So think about how that affected your character also as we go along.
May 7, 2019 1:01 am
That answers a couple of my follow-up questions, thanks!
Will all 10 guilds be fair game for Reknown spending?

I'm open to share points of backstory with the rest of you - for non-Selesnyans, it's almost certain he would have met you within the last 9 months - probably in connection to the rebuilding efforts (as a low ranking druid, Hebron would have helped with jump starting agriculture. As a loxodon, he would have also been tasked with clearing rubble and refuse from the War)
May 7, 2019 1:07 am
Character submitted so at least the other PCs can see how the party is developing, though I'm still working on her and entering info.
May 7, 2019 1:11 am
Yes, all guilds are open to spending Reknown, it needs to make sense with your history, but the war saw a LOT of mixing of guilds so they could accomplish various tasks, and some details of how you developed that relationship would be great to go along with it.

When you gain more Reknown in the future, how you spend it will be somewhat restricted. It will be limited to the guilds involved in the "mission" so if you wrangle a Simic Krasis that got loose and was tearing up a Golgari farming project, those guilds plus your own would be options to increase Reknown scores with.

Make sense?
May 7, 2019 1:13 am
Total sense, thanks a ton!
May 7, 2019 1:37 am
Do you have guidelines on how to spend Reknown? The link you posted doesn't seem to be working for me.
May 7, 2019 1:40 am
And I want to make sure I clarify because I thnk my comment before was not detailed enough.

The PC guilds will always be an option for Renown spending. So as of this posting we have a possible Selesnya and Azorius. If that remains true, you can increase Reknown with either of those guilds, even if you are an Orshov for example. So PC guilds plus whatever guilds were involved in the "mission" you complete.

And typically you will get 2 points when I give out Reknown, that is what the Ravnica book suggests. So then you can divided up those points or spend them all on your Reknown with one guild. I will of course remind you how this works when it comes up, but figured I should say it so you know what to expect, because it is a new mechanic.

And Reknown can go down...it will fluctuate sometimes. If you arrest a prominent Rakdos performer, the Cult will not be happy. Relationships with them will suffer. But I won't be taking things away often.

Hi foolsmask. I don't have access to the Guildmaster's Guide to Ravnica, and looking online it seems that they changed the Loxodon from the original appearance in UA to the official book. Would you be able to help me with the class features? If not, I'll just go back to my original idea of an Elf Druid. Thanks!
May 7, 2019 1:45 am
Yeah. I'll send you a PM with the details after I figure out what is wrong with the magic item price guide link.

You spend the Reknown how you want with the Guilds. Make notes on your character sheet. You could have Simic Combine 2, Azorius Senate 3 for example. The only rule is that your PCs guild has to be the highest or tied for the highest. Think bout who your character knows in Ravnica. Did they worked with a Dimir Spy to steal some Eternal's battle plans, or maybe they helped repair an Izzet steam turbine that powered a magic barrier protecting a hospital.

Also...I think I fixed the link to the item price guide. Let me know.

If you can get your hands on Aurora builder, all the GGtR content is in there. Pretty much ALL the source books you could ever want are included in the builder. Just make sure to get the additional elements. See both links below.

Thanks, Aurora builder really helped me out! How do I get that character sheet (in pdf form) onto the submission tool for the game? Do I just copy+paste?
May 7, 2019 3:08 am
I'm pretty sure you just have to transfer it manually.
May 7, 2019 3:27 am
I'm currently thinking of playing a Boros Minotaur Fighter (Battlemaster). A hardened veteran of the Legion, distinguished in battle, but devoted to the ideals of peace and preservation.

Hi all, I need to dig my copy of the Ravnica book out and take a look but I'm going to be going with an investigator type character within the Azorius Senate - possibly Rogue Inquisitive archetype (from Xanathars) or a Divination Wizard, probably will go for a Veldaken if that all sounds good.

Is not you. Other players have to go into the character builder and add them to the library so other users can view them. Characters > All Characters > Go to character and click on the grey book icon so it's highlighted red. You should be able to view mine at least.

We may also be still waiting on the DM to accept them.

Yep, ditto. Oh, I forgot Renown, I'll look into that. (I suspect for Brozhlek it's just 5 points in Boros, honestly.)
May 7, 2019 5:07 pm
Sure...as of this posting the following bits are missing from the characters submitted so far.

Gitzmar...has no equipment, spells prepared, and no background traits (Personality x2, Bond, Ideals, Flaw)

Brozhlek...has no background traits (Personality x2, Bond, Ideals, Flaw), and Renown

Hebron...just missing Renown at this point.

No pressure intended at all. Just answering questions. We still have two PCs that have no info. No worries
May 7, 2019 5:45 pm
Hi DM as I am playing an Artificer there are few details about my character that I'd like to have 'reskinned' with your permission. Will inbox you shortly. One of them being my daggers. I would like them to appear as double-bladed throwing daggers (a bit like a chakram) for a boomerang effect when I use my 'Returning Weapon' infusion on them. Otherwise would be the same as a dagger statistically. Some other stuff as well. Once again sorry for the delay. I'm really looking forward to playing.

May 7, 2019 10:02 pm
Ok I'm pretty much done. Wow as expected from an Artificer, this character has lots of moving pieces. Just have o fill in backstory and explain to you the 'science' behind my magic. That will come in a moment.

A slender Vedalken female stands before you with long black hair and light blue skin. Her eyes are wide with enthusiasm, but she is otherwise expressionless. She wears a tight fitting, long sleeve white body suit made of some kind of semi-rubbery material, over which she wears a golden, x-shaped metal harness on her torso, with a glowing orange orb in the middle of the chest piece. Her hands and forearms are covered by gauntlets of a similar metal with glowing orange crystals embedded in each finger tip. Her belt jingles with mechanical components, tools and vials, within and without a series of large pouches that line her belt. On her belt also hangs 2 exotic, S-shaped, double bladed daggers with crystals at the base of the blades where they meet the handle. Like any artificer, she seems all too eager to explain what all of her equipment does.

Special Tools for Casting:

Arc Blade - Engineered by Gitzmar herself, this double bladed throwing dagger looks almost like an 'S' with a handle in the middle. The handle section features a socket for special cartridges that give the blade upgrades, and gravic crystals that can be charged for improved throwing and returning functionality:

Gravic crystals - Charged for the Returning weapon Infusion (Long term mod)

Elemental cartridges - Used as the 'Arcane Weapon' spell. Depending on the energy application of spell.
Vulcan cell - An energy cartridge containing stabilized quasi-elemental fire particles called Flogistal, which is used to apply fire damage to the blade's attacks.
Zero cell - An energy cartridge containing an alchemical solution called 'Quick Ice' that reaches freezing cold temperatures, used to apply cold damage to the weapon.
Ion cell - An energy cartridge constructed using LSMT - Load Stone Magnetic Field Technology - used to apply electrical charge to the weapon's attacks.
Vibro cell - An energy cartridge that causes the blade to vibrate rapidly with sonic oscillations dealing thunder damage.
Anti-matter cell - An energy cartridge that uses special particles that corrode and disintegrate organic matter in a similar way to acid.
Radon cell - An energy cell that generates sickening radiation, making cuts form the blade poisonous.

Thermo-Gravic Reactor - An energy core located in the middle chest compartment of Gitzmar's special X-harness Exo-suit breastplate. The power supply is fueled by quasi-elemental Flogistal particles stabilized by a LSMF (Load Stone Magnetic Field) matrix. The Thermo-Gravic Reactor can produce a number of effects such as thermal energy blasts (Fire Bolt), gravitational deflection fields (Shield of Faith), sickening radiation blasts (Ray of Sickeness) and light, and is also used as a power source to charge her other devices. Gitzmar is currently working on upgrades that will allow an anti-gravity cushion for levitation and later, flight.

Proximity Sensors - Currently used to establish security barriers that alarm at the passage of motion through a warded area. Used as the 'Alarm' spell. More functionality as upgrades come.

Biotic injection syringe - For applying alchemical cellular regeneration fluids as a 'Cure Wounds'. Can also apply decontamination fluids (Purify food and drink). Future upgrades may include other metabolic fluid enhancements as the 'Enhance Ability' spell.

Optical Analyzer Lenses - These hi-tech goggles provide visual systems including night vision (Darkvision), Quantum Field Spectral Analysis - QFSA - (Detect Magic) and Quantum Database Analysis (Identify)

Hebron stirs from the heap of rubble serving as his chair - a corner of an Orzhov altar, judging from the pretentious runes scrawled down the sides. Large, liquid brown eyes take in the dark-haired, rattling Vedalken woman before him. The Loxodon rumbles to his feet, leaning on his twisted, oaken quarterstaff; Hebron twitches his trunk upward in friendly greeting, careful to minimize the movement for the newcomer (to many Ravnicans, ALL Loxodonic gestures are threatening). In a tone like a mountain settling, he speaks:

"Blessings to you, friend."

Hebron absorbs the sight of a bewildering array of equipment and technology, thinking What one woman could possibly need with so many glowing gadgets... Realizing his stare has entered the awkward state, Hebron hurriedly exclaims, "What a unique look! You simply must tell me which Izzet lab you..." Hebron suddenly notices the sharp outline of an Azorius insignia. "Pardon me, I hadn't realized the Senate contained such, erm, gleaming members! You must accept my most humble apologies for jumping to such offensive conclusions. And pardon my manners again!"

Bowing low, trunk sweeping broadly in respect, "Hebron, of the Selesnya Conclave, at your service."

Looking up once more, Hebron asks brightly, "Are you here for the" - Pausing, he rocks forward, lowering his voice to a conspiratorial rumble, "...mission?"
OOC:
Love the character, looking forward to playing with you!

OOC:
Thank you and same here. Yours looks awesome!
Gitzmar takes a step backwards cautiously as Hebron stands, somewhat intimidated by the creature's voice and size. Yet still there is no sign of fear in her facial expression, only wide-eyed curiosity and a nervous twitch of her long, pointed ears. She cocks her head to one side, rubs her chin and clears her throat before replying. "Favorable outcomes to you also. Hebron is your designation? It is...." With a finger on her chin, her large eyes roll downwards seeking the right words. "....a pleasure...." Her wide, vacant stare is an indicator that pleasure is a sensation she is almost completely unfamiliar with, and the word is only a formality. "You may address me as Gitzmar....Your initial assumption about my affiliation is understandable given my genetic make-up and attire, however, a gifted intellect is wasted without moral guidance and structure so I serve the Senate." She pauses and bows to the Loxodon. "Affirmative, I believe I AM here for the mission. Long live the guild pact...." Gitzmar too whispers her last statement in a manner which is conspiratorial.

A small metallic orb with a single blue crystal for an 'eye' hovers out from hiding behind her and emits a series of clicks and chirps in an almost emotive fashion. The gadget's blue eye pulses with a dim blue light in sympathy with the sounds it makes, making you assume the little gizmo is communicating somehow. "I am uncertain. Perhaps we should ask him." Gitzmar replies to the little hovering drone.

The corners of Hebron's eyes sigh as Gitzmar steps back. It was so much easier to make friends back in Vitu-Ghazi... However, hope stirs at her odd yet charming response.

"Long live the guild pact!" he returns, a muffled trumpeting escaping his otherwise skulduggerous tone. As the ominous blue orb darts into view, it is Hebron's turn to step backward - this time in alarm! Thopter! I am betrayed!

Quarterstaff creaking ominously in vast hands, Hebron prepares for action...but after a pregnant moment lacking the trademark monologue of the Lawmages of Dovin Baan, Hebron notices the complete lack of wings.

"Pardon me a third time, and now I'm in your debt! Your little friend just reminded me of...well, you know...But I'm sure you get that far too often, so I would be happy to answer any questions asked by..." Hebron's voice trails off meaningfully, trunk curled over his shoulder in embarrassment and contrition.

Sorry I haven't been so active as of late. To complete the odd menagerie we have going on here, I'd like to play a NG Symic Hybrid Wizard(Abjuration) who left the Symic Combine in favor of the Azorious Senate. Renown: Symic Combine 2, Azorious Senate 3

Right, Officer Ortivar is submitted. Just need to work on their backstory and buy their gear but most of the mechanical bits should be there for review.

Not sure if there's a magic item in any of the official sources like this but I wanted to query what would be the availability/price of essentially a magical voice recorder? I'm thinking it's the kind of thing Ortivar would talk into during an investigation so he could listen back to it later when he's making more detailed notes/filling in reports.
May 8, 2019 1:03 pm
Very interesting choice Endermun. I like it. So no one wanted to roleplay a banking regulator? Can't imagine why...

I'm kidding of course.

I will look into the voice recorder thing. Likely it will be a Magic Mouth spell that can be overwritten/rerecorded. Probably a limited number of messages. But it does seem like something someone on Ravnica would create.

Not sure about being one of the best, but should be fun.

And yeah, if all you need is to switch your choices, go for it. Really don't need to lock them in until the first time they get used.

No worries on the editing. I hate when I see little typos in my post. As the GM it doesn't track all the edits I make, and you can't change you die rolls without deleting the whole comment, so it doesn't bother me.

Jun 20, 2019 5:41 pm
I think we might need to officially quantify the benefits and drawbacks of being in a mid-level position at a wide-reaching law-enforcement institution.
Jun 21, 2019 12:22 pm
I think the background and renown rules do that fairly well? The Azorius ones, for instance:

As an Azorius official, you can call on recruits (use the soldier stat block in chapter 6) to perform mundane tasks and errands for you, but they will not accompany you into dangerous circumstances.

You have the authority to enforce the laws of Ravnica, and that status inspires a certain amount of respect and even fear in the populace. People mind their manners in your presence and avoid drawing your attention; they assume you have the right to be wherever you are. Showing your Azorius insignia gets you an audience with anyone you want to talk to (though it might cause more problems than it solves when you're dealing with incorrigible lawbreakers). If you abuse this privilege, though, you can get in serious trouble with your superiors and even be stripped of your position.

What other aspects were you hoping to quantify?
Jul 1, 2019 2:27 pm
Sooooooo....are we considering this game dead now then?
Jul 1, 2019 2:30 pm
I was wondering the same thing.

Yes, those are the individual benefits but the larger social benefits of being in a place that has a police service is kind of ridiculous by D&D standards. For example, it would make sense that officials can get secure prisoner transport/paramedics/forensic services/coroners just by virtue of this being a half-decent police force. This gives us a massive home-field advantage.

You do not have permission to post in this thread.
