Chapter 3: Crow's Nest

May 13, 2019 4:42 am
The night passes uneventfully, if a little discomforting for all the silence. If you had gotten used to one thing living in Meriava, it was the constant sound of people. Here outside the Wards, the only sound is nature -- an occasional night bird, frogs down by the creek, trees rustling with a breeze.

Well before the sun rises, you prepare yourselves for the short journey back to Viamard with efficiency and are on the road early. Clouds have built up during the night, and there is an unmistakably unsettled feeling in the spring air. You'd guess there will be rain sometime today, a cold early spring rain that seeps through clothes and into the bones. But as you make your way into the outskirts of town, you're lucky enough to have come this far without any unpleasant weather. You crest the final hill before the small lakeside town you visited the day before and in the faint pre-dawn light see much the same place you left: abandoned, clearly damaged by fire and destruction of some sort, with the citadel on the opposite side of the town from where you stand.

The wind is starting to pick up off the lake, trees swaying and hair whipping about faces.

Viani is determined to show to the others that she can be useful for this mission. Verrian's criticism has been gnawing at her all night and today she wants to prove her wrong.
She spent most her night shift practicing to quickly retrieve her weapon from the back holster and also going over some fighting techniques again. During the morning and the walk to town, she has been unusually quiet and now that the group is getting close to Viamard again, she jogs ahead of the group a bit to check for anything that might be a danger to the group, especially Crow watchmen, while hopefully not being seen herself.

Ember, meanwhile, spent her watch quietly concentrating on her favorite cantrip, trying to work on the level of detail and....something. She became quiet the closer they got to the Citadel, but did her best to smile and greet everyone cheerfully that morning.

She swats at Viani's cloak as the girl runs off. She can't afford to make her angry by suggesting she not run off alone, but she can try to protect her.
OOC:
Whether it's obvious or not, Ember casts "Protection" on Viani, who can technically roll to resist, but it's harmless.
She quietly mutters to the group

It's daylight. Is going to town okay?

Krav awakens in the morning and returns his bedroll to his pack. Leaving his pack in campe then approaches the largest nearby tree and places both hands upon it. He relaxes the tension in his body and gradually moves his awareness down his torso and legs and through the soles of his bare feet. Imagining roots travelling deep into the soil, he begins to feel the nourishment and energy of the the earth seeping into him slowly, working its way upward until it reaches the top of his head. He remains in this position for nearly an hour, calmly and silently breathing in and out.

When the ritual is complete, he turns to face each cardinal direction one after another, and then silently moves back to camp to wait for the others to finish their preparations.
OOC:
I have now memorized Speak with Animals 2x!

Viani cautiously gets closer to the source of the noise. She looks back at the group and sees they're still a bit behind her, which gives her enough time to determine if there's any danger.
"Hello, who's there? Are you a person or an animal? Don't worry, I'm not going to hurt you. Unless you attack first, of course."
OOC:
I guess, I'll give you a Diplomacy and a Handle Animal, since I dont know what it is. And a K. Nature to determine what it could be depending on the sounds if it doesnt show itself

Viani slowly steps away from the bushes and retreats towards the rest of the group. She keeps an eye on the bushes so nothing will escape from them unnoticed. "There's something in the bushes", she announces. "I think it's a horse. Yelnar, maybe it's one of yours. You should check to make sure. But I think it's carrying something"

As the group travels, Verrian keeps an eye and ear out for trouble, while also glancing occasionally, with subtle amusement, at Froak as he admires the new sharp-and-silver he picked out from the weapons cache. She is surprised to see Viani run a little ahead of the group suddenly, but she seems focused and determined, so Verrian doesn't feel particularly concerned about her actions.

Elora keeps a weary eye on the bush, just in case whatever is concealed decides to charge them.

Ember lets the itch take over her skin, and mutters all but one syllable of a spell. If anything bad happens, meteors will rain on that bush. If not, well, no harm done.

Viani was mostly right. It’s not a horse... it’s a pony. And it clearly belongs to someone: it carries a fair amount of gear. Mostly camping gear, a quiver of arrows, a couple of packs that don’t look terribly full.

As it looks back at the people moving toward it, it shows no sign of fear or tension, as if waiting for you to ask permission to approach.
May 13, 2019 9:07 pm
Looking the pony in the eye, Verrian makes a soothing noise and says quietly, "Okay if we come closer? We don't want to hurt you? We just want to take a closer look at you."

Rolls

Handle animal check - (1d20+2)

(16) + 2 = 18

May 13, 2019 9:16 pm
The pony stares back at Verrian. It seems to consider the question for a time, then lets out another equine snort and goes back to grazing on the brambles. It seems utterly unconcerned (or maybe unimpressed) with your presence.

As you look at the animal, it’s obvious that whoever owns this pony cares for it a great deal. The tack and harness are of high quality, well-oiled leather, likely the work of a very good craftsperson.
May 13, 2019 9:27 pm
Verrian approaches the pony, looking around for signs of the apparently missing owner.
OOC:
Can we apply my previous ill-timed perception check to this?
May 13, 2019 9:30 pm
If the owner is nearby, there is no indication. It does look, from pony tracks, that the animal has wandered quite a lot. If you had to take a guess, the animal was either left to wander or the lead used to tie it up came loose.
May 13, 2019 9:35 pm
Verrian leads the pony out of the bushes. If there is a brand, she asks Yelnar if he recognizes it.
May 13, 2019 9:38 pm
OOC:
No brand that anyone can find. Yelnar would not recognize it.
May 13, 2019 9:43 pm
"What's the best guess?" Verrian asks the group quietly. "The tether accidentally came undone, or something unfortunate happened to its owner?"
