Character Creation

May 15, 2019 5:36 pm
For everyone's information, I am going to be creating a campaign for this game on DnD Beyond. I'm not sure if you can assign your character to that campaign. If not, I will take your character and add them for you, then you can 'claim' your character in the campaign.

That way I have access to your character sheet and can make adjustments, additions, etc., as necessary during play. Once it is set up, I will send you the invite link.

Note, also, that when creating your PC on Beyond, set the defaults to NO for homebrew, critical role, playtest, Magic and Eberon. This is strictly default stuff. Milestone advancement, fixed HP type, use pre-requisites, use variant encumbrance, turn OFF ignore coin weight. Turn OFF Feats.

Let me know if you have questions.

PS: You do NOT have to have any of the source books to create your PC, as when I create the campaign I will share content. I have everything except the Ravnica SRD... which I may or may not buy later, but won't matter for this game anyway.

I've submitted the updated character to the D&D Beyond campaign, complete with a new backstory. I haven't quite finished making a matching character sheet on GP, but I resubmitted the incomplete character for the new character anyway.

I have a question though. Is it ok to modify starting equipment so long as I keep the same value? For instance, if I forego the 25gp rapier and 10 of my starting gold, can I upgrade my starting leather armor(10gp value) to studded leather(45gp value)?

Yeah, as long as the costs are equal, I’m ok with that. Just no magic. 😎

Ferdy, you still have spells to fill out on your sheet, if you want. Also, with regard to your back story, it is more likely that you reported to a lower-level individual than the top guy himself. There is a council of advisers, and more than likely you arrived to be greeted by him... or one of his underlings even.

Oh man, can't believe I overlooked the spell list. I'll get them added, and tweak the backstory so I'm reporting to HR and not the CEO.

Don't feel obligated... you can always say you met with the man himself... :D

I think I've gotten everything done on Beyond. I do want to flesh out my Background a little, I just have not had time to do so at work today ;)

There's no hurry guys, But for your background, details are helpful. names, places, events, etc. I am hoping to incorporate character backstories as we play. While I know Ghosts of Saltmarsh is a series of adventures that can take PCs to level 12, there is no obligation to run to its entirety. You may get bored and decide that a Pirate's life is for you.

I am a FIRM believer that this world, while managed by me, is fully fleshed out and brought to life by the players in it. If you decide that you want to go slay dragons at 3rd level, I will oblige your interests. I'm merely a spectator trying to give you an enjoyable experience.

Ket, how do you delete your starting equipment on Beyond? I wanted to change some of it, but all I did was double it up!

If you click the '+' symbol, it expands the description. At the bottom is a 'Remove' button

Alrighty, I think I'm done with Mercival's character sheet. I've modified the last couple paragraphs of his backstory, and swapped some equipment around, selling his fine clothes and buying some assorted adventuring gear.

You mentioned characters starting off in their own story threads and then coming together, do they have to start out in Saltmarsh or is their own little story thread intended to encompass how they ended up there?

Your story lines will encompass your travelling and winding up in Saltmarsh. Which is why in your story I would like to know what motivated you to head in that direction. It gives me a bit of fuel to kick things off.

The book drops in a couple of days and I want to have everything as close to complete as possible by then. If your character is not fully fleshed out, including description, backstory, etc., please do so.

My plan is to be able to work out a pre—arrival thread for each PC after I’ve had a couple of days to review the material.

I believe I'm ready to go.

What do you think about that Ket?...

Willow was born in Bissel (In Pellak to be exact) but his parents (simple farmers), seeing his love of learning, sent him to Niole Dra, where his grandfather (called the High Aldwin in the family) lived. There he found work in a library where he learned to read and write and had access to has many books as he wanted. During the Greyhawk Wars, Willow was hired by the military as a cryptographer, writing and deciphering messages for them. After the wars, Willow was offered an apprenticeship with a minor wizard. He did manage to learn enough before the minor wizard blew himself in a magical experiment... Now Willow has decided to travel and explore the history of Keoland first hand. Willow is still not sure if his first destination should be Gradsul (where they resisted an invasion), the Dreadwoods (since the elves are long lived and might have old records of the creation of Keoland) or a small town like Saltmarsh (where he could be the first to record the local history)...

Ah yes, wizards have been trying to figure out how to do that for centuries.

Should be all set.

Cool. I started reading the book this AM. There are some great hooks for characters that I will be talking to some of you about. The next couple of days i will try to be plotting out your initial threads. When they post, remember that only the PC they target are allowed to post. Everyone else shall have to just read along. :D

Can't wait to get started!

All,

I created some 'Character' threads here in the general, but then realized i could not make them private, so i locked them. You can disregard those threads.

However, I created a sub-forum under the General thread called 'Private Character Stuff'. In that sub-forum are individual threads for your characters. These are set so that only Benzie, myself and the player for that character can read the contents. This is so we can work out specific character knowledge as we go along.

I recommend that you subscribe to your thread so you can see when I have added something or replied to you.
