Fenlys - The Beginning

Waterday, 5 Planting CY591
Although the Growfest festival time is more for the humans that farm the land, Oellune was not immune to the infectious nature of celebrations. The elven community decorated itself much as the human towns and cities did, though most of the deities they celebrated were fey in nature; except for the ancient one, Obad-Hai, and his feminine counterpart Ehlonna, whom the elves showed respect and paid homage to at various times of the year.

This was the last period of time Fenlys would be spending here at home with your friends and family, as you have been directed to travel to the Seelie Court of Celene to seek out teachers there who might aid you in controlling the untapped power that rages within you. The forest is thick with life, the high boughs of its ancient trees casting long shadows across glen and field as you prepare for your journey.

The weather is warm, breezes blowing lightly, causing the rustling sound of the trees and thick reeds to move across the Dreadwood. The sounds of children playing, dogs barking and people laughing ring all about, making you pause to look out of a window and watch them.

"So, my son. Have you decided on your route of travel?" Turning, you see you mother standing there, her eyes showing signs of redness, her frame standing upright yet stiff.

Fenlys smiles, trying to lighten the mood. "You know that I never paid a lot of attention to my studies mother." Then his smile dims and in a more serious tone he replies, "The safer route would be to cross Keoland to the Principality and then skirt up between the Lortmils and the Suss forest into Celene from the south, but that would take weeks of travel. My thought is to take the faster route and to go east to Gradsul, or faster yet south to Anglar at the edge of the forest and find a ship willing to take me across the Azure Sea and round the Pomarj to the Wild Coast. From there it would be a short journey to Celene."

"Any route seems too dangerous for me." your mother replies. "I wish that things could be different. You could stay here with us, you know; with your father and me. He could always use help, you know, though he is loathe to admit it. Oellune will not be the same without you."

Nor shall I. she adds, frowning slightly.

Fenlys smiles, "Mother, you know the elders wouldn't allow it, especially Zelphar. I think that he's afraid of the power that I could wield, and maybe he's right to be. I don't know what I'm capable of, it's like the promise of spring inside me. A burgeoning power just starting to awaken."

Fenlys pauses reflectively, then looks up eyes shining. "Besides it's not everyday you get commanded to visit the Seelie Court. Of course I'll miss you, but can you imagine the adventures that await. You know Oellune isn't enough for me, nor I doubt is the Dreadwood. This is my opportunity to see Oerth. Who knows, one day I might be as famous as Mordenkainen."

Seeing the look on his mother's face Fenlys curbs his excitement. "It's not that I'm not grateful for all that you've done, and this will always be home, but there is so much world out there."

Fenlys
"Aye, I know, my son. But the stupidity of others does not make this any easier on your father. He may not say it all of the time, but he loves you as deeply as a father can."

Pausing briefly, she adds "And Mordenkainen is a pompous human fool, if you as me." With a chuckle, she hugs you tightly and then helps you pack your gear. "You will write often. Once your magic is powerful enough you can message us even more so. You will eat well and treat others with respect, even if you feel they do not deserve it. Honor your name, my son. That is the best you can do in this world."

With your gear packed and everything set, you step outside.

Where to? :D

Fenlys looks around, breathing in the rich air and savoring the sights, sounds and smells of the forest around him. The Dreadwood would always be home to him. Looking around him for the last time for a while Fenlys throws his pack on his back and heads out of the settlement of Oellune and on to the trail. Pausing to contemplate his route he considers turning north and heading for Daerwald and then skirting the northern edge of the forest to head to Gradsul, it would certainly be the safer route, but the forest calls to him too much and so he turns south and heads toward Oaken Heart, from where he planned to turn east to Goldenbranch and then through the forest to the coast road and Sanduchar or Anglar.
OOC:
I'm putting Oellune on or close to the trail between Daerwald and Oaken Heart. Gives some possibilities of meeting up with Gyre or simply head to the coast road.

With a good-bye to your parents, and a final look upon your childhood, you depart Oellune and begin the long trek south. You know the road well enough, as you have traveled north and south along it for your entire life, but this time it feels different. There is a nervousness in your step as you realize that the farthest you have gone until now is Oaken Heart, the elven outpost turned center of operations for the Dreadwalkers, a loosely-knit group of ranger conclaves that road the Dreadwood keeping evil at bay. One of their leaders, Elveress Lizhal, was rumored to have once driven a dragon from deep within the woods where it had made its lair.

The day is clear and bright, with a scattering of clouds and a light breeze, and your journey remains uninterrupted for almost the entire way. You arrive in Oaken Heart by early afternoon, the sun just passing its zenith, and the sight before you never ceases to take away your breath. An impressive community stretches around the base of large trees and rope bridges give access to the high boughs where homes and businesses sit among the treetops.

Though there is no wall surrounding the village, there is no shortage of elven warriors on patrol both aground and aloft, their sharp eyes and bows ready to meet any would-be challenger or beast. You can see a few places that might offer refuge or a night's stay, including the Griffon Crier, Bazeal's and The Tree Frog, though those are just a few you see upon arrival.

Fenlys takes in the sights and sounds of Oaken Heart. It's not the first time he's been to the outpost but the colors seem brighter and the sounds clearer today than before. The freedom of setting out on his own excited Fenlys, especially being so young. Most of his kin would be still learning their trades but here he was, commanded to travel and appear before the Seelie Court and yet, to elven society, still not yet considered an adult.

That thought sobered his mind. How would he be received here in Oaken Heart? He wasn't sure and so looking at the choices of eating and resting establishments before him decided to choose, what to him, looked the most diverse and suited to members of all races. Thus entering the Griffon Crier he looks around, taking stock of the clientele before making his way to a small table and attracting the attention of the serving girl.

A server approaches at your hail. She is average in height for a human, sandy colored hair that is pulled back into a pony tail. She wears simple, cloth clothes, tan and brown, with a white apron ties about the waist. Her face is marked with pimples, though not overly so, giving away her young age.

"Aye, sire. Welcome to the Griffon. Name's Olivia. Drink? Eat? We've a good selection of all the finest brews, so name your ale and I'll be prompt to fetch it for you."

Inside, the Crier is fairly busy, with a few tables available even after you sit. The clientele is a fair mix of elf and human, and behind the bar is a thick human may with a heavily waxed mustache that sticks out like a pair of oars on a small boat. With him, moving up and down a small shelf behind the bar, is a halfling. Both are working quickly to keep up with the orders the three servers are calling for.

Fenlys smiles up at the young server, "Greetings Olivia, would it be possible to get wine? Something local, light and crisp if you don't mind, and some fruits and whatever you have on the spit. I'm in no hurry so whenever you get the chance." Fenlys looks around, "You seem fairly busy for the middle of the day."

"Aye, sire, 'tis typical of the day. More so t'night, when the bards arrive. Will you be needing a bed, too?" Olivia asks, as she goes to retrieve your order.

"We've just private rooms, so more's the' cost, but their warm 'n' airy."
Jul 2, 2019 5:06 pm
"Probably, so I'll reserve one now. However, I'm more in need of information. Can you point out anyone who may be a traveler? I'm trying to get to the coast, Sanduchar or maybe Seaton, and I'm looking for information on the best route to take through the forest."

"If it's travelin' yer wantin', speak with Meister." Olivia replies, nodding toward the halfling. "Word he tells is e's all the way from Elmshire, what be north of the Free City of Greyhawk h'erself!" she gets a bit of a faraway look before coming back and adding "Or Fenwick the Bard. Oldest known elf I ever met!"

Turning on her heels, Olivia returns to her serving duties. A few minutes pass when she returns with a key. Attached is a small wood square, looped with a thong of thin leather. Carved into it is a number 3.

Fenlys waits for his food and wine to be delivered, then takes his time to enjoy his repast he keeps an eye on the comings and goings from the inn. Once he has finished his meal and he drops some coin onto the table, enough to cover the cost of his meal and leave some for Olivia, and takes his cup of wine over over to the bar. When the halfling appears to have a moment Fenlys asks him, "Excuse me mine host, would you care to take a cup with me? There is knowledge I seek that Olivia told me you may be able to help me find."

"Hallo, then traveler! I'ms Elavon The Meister, makes me own drinks here for ya, I does, so drinkin' it we'll be, ya!" the halfling says with a wide grin, taking a mug and filling it up. With a cheers to you, he takes a deep draw and then belches loudly. "Baste in the Dreadwood Preserve, ya?"

Raising an eyebrow slightly, he then asks "So then, ya, what is this knowledge the maiden fair done sent ya to an old fool then, ya?"

Fenlys takes a drink of his wine and acknowledges the halfling's words. "To get straight to the point," he says. "I need to travel to one of the ports on the Nyr Dyv, either Sanduchar or Seaton, and I was seeking advice on what path might be the safest through the forest or if anyone had knowledge of others traveling the same route that might be open to traveling together for mutual protection. I.. have some training in the arcane arts and am willing to trade my services for such protection."

Fenlys' slight pause over the background of his knowledge of magic is brief but noticeable as the images of the bugbear attack on Oellune flash through his mind.

The halfling smiles at your request. Arcane ya says, does ya? Wale then, ya! Entertain t'night ya should, ya? Most travelin folk come in then, ya, p'raps find ya one that's haded south, ya?

Course, if the Nyr Dyv is what yer lookin for, ya, then ya's be haded the wrongest way, ya? That great beast of water lie east, not south, ya? Either ways, ya can prolly find ya travelers haded there, ya?
OOC:
FYI, Seaton and Sanduchar lie alone the Azure Sea. The Nyr Dyv (Lake of Unknown Depths) lies far to the east and north, near the Free City of Greyhawk. The halfling town of Elmshire lies along the lake. Was not sure if you meant to test him like that or not.
Jul 9, 2019 8:43 am
Fenlys smiles wryly, "As I told my mother not long back I was never one for my studies, geography especially. Of course I meant the Azure Sea. I will rest and return when the evening crowd has arrived, and should you so desire I will entertain your guests if you could keep an ear open and introduce me to anyone who might be traveling in the same direction." Raising his glass to the halfling hostler he nods and finishes his wine, then he retires to his room to rest with plans to return to the common room once the evening has arrived.
OOC:
No test, just dumb on my part. It's been a while and I had convinced myself the Nyr Dyv was to the south of Greyhawk City and didn't bother checking a map.

You return to the taproom to find a much larger crowd than when you had left. Elavon the Meister still mans the bar, but he is now accompanied by a different man, one that looks younger and more fit than the mustache man from earlier.

The crowd is still a decent mix of people, all intent on the group gathering on a small, raised platform across the room. An elf, thin and old even for one of his race, begins to strum a finely crafted lyre. The lights suddenly dim, as if a veil were tossed over anything giving off light, and the sounds in the room deaden as if you are underwater. A moment later, a beautiful male voices breaks through, regaling you to a tale of long lost kingdoms and the godly battles that shaped the Flaneass. You are not sure how long the song lasts, but when it does the veil parts and you almost feel blinded as the taproom goes crazy with applause and cheers.

His songs continue for nearly two hours, each tune either a soaring, epic tale of fierce battles and fiercer loves or a comedic vision of some of the same tales. One in particular tells the story of a village that makes a bargain with a dragon by feeding it virgins until one bright fellow suggests that they can rid themselves of the dragon by ensuring that there are no more virgins to be had.

The crowd is roaring and drunk by this time, and a server stops by your table pointing to Elavon. The halfling motions to the stage, apparently offering you a turn to entertain.
Jul 11, 2019 7:38 am
Fenlys nods to his host and rises to his feet. As he takes the stage he claps his hands together, the sound booming to all corners of the room (Prestidigitation). Opening his arms and raising his hands a shower of sparks spew from his open palms (Prestidigitation). "Honored guests of the establishment, though I am but a poor shadow in comparison to the fine entertainment you have witnessed tonight, but I offer you fire!" With these words four floating, burning lights appear and start to move around Fenlys' head (Dancing Lights). He reaches up and appears to grab them one after another and appears to be juggling them. After several seconds the balls start moving faster and faster until they combine into a single figure. "Behold the man of light!" shouts Fenlys, "Now begone!" and the glowing figure is gone. Fenlys bows to the crowd, "Gentle folk, what you have witnessed is but a small sample of my art. My talents and services are available to those who are heading in the same direction I travel. If you desire to know more then I would be happy to talk with you."

With that short demonstration Fenlys exits the stage and resumes his seat.

There is a brief pause of silence, when the crowd erupts in cheers and the clanking of cups on the table, showing respect and appreciation for your brief display of magic. Olivia comes to your table, a goblet of wine in her hand. Setting it on the table, she says "From the Meister, m'lord. Said t' tell you 'e had it brought all th' way from Celene." and she turns to resume her duties with the rest of the patrons.

As you again get comfortable, a man walks up to you. He is human, of medium build, with dark grey hair and green eyes. His skin is tanned, as one who accustomed to being outdoors, and a small scar is visible across his right eye. He carries a mead with him, and greets you enthusiastically.

"Hail and well met fellow traveler, I am called Gyre, Gyre Greytree and I too am a traveller. I am heading to Saltmarsh by way of the Emerald Vale to the south eventually hitting the Dreadwood Road. I plan on taking that road south straight into Saltmarsh. Would you happen to be heading that way as well? I would certainly appreciate some company on the journey."
Jul 12, 2019 9:25 am
Fenlys offers the other chair at the table to the newcomer. The elf smiles welcomingly, his green-tinted skin shining in the light of the lanterns hung around the inn, "Well met Gyre. I am Fenlys, recently from Oellune a little north of here. I'm looking to get to the coast, I was thinking Sanduchar or Seaton. Your route will certainly take me close to Seaton, so perhaps we could travel together. That's not an easy route you travel, are you alone or already part of a company?"
Jul 12, 2019 3:07 pm
Fenlys
Gyre nods at you and sits at the offered chair.

"I tend to take the most direct route, given the chance, thus south to the Dreadwood road is the correct route to Saltmarsh for me. The road is two to three days travel I believe and then a straight shot south. Besides, I enjoy the peace of a forest path over the bustle of a busy street any day."
